Saturday 9

(Link in meme-roll)
Monday, Monday*

1. How does your day usually go on Monday?
I get up (so far, so good), see Sparky off to school, and head off to school awhile later to do my volunteering at the library. After that I sometimes do some grocery shopping, or I go to my scheduled massage (once a month). Once I'm home, there is usually a nap in my day, and then Sparky comes home and we go on from there.
2. Who was the last band you saw live?
TobyMac last November, on my birthday, in fact.
3. When was the last time you purchased something over $50?
Well, either Wednesday (a sponsorship) or last week (Sparky's contacts)--either way, they were both for Sparky. Oh, wait, groceries last weekend. Hell, the quick groceries last NIGHT were almost $50.
4. Does talking about sex make you uncomfortable?
Only if I'm talking about myself. ;-)
5. Do you wish you were someplace else right now?
Nah, I'm good for today.
6. Tell us about the last wedding that you attended.
I guess that would be my niece Elizabeth's almost 4 years ago. I was one of the bridesmaids.
7. What's annoying you right now?
My fookin' neck needs attention from the aforementioned masseuse.
8. What is your best skill/ability? Why?
Sassy-ness.
9. If someone asked a friend of yours, "Hey, what is one thing your friend is exceptional at?", what would they say about you? Why?
I have no idea--I suppose it would depend on the day, and which friend.
__________
* This song always reminds me of my sister Ellen who hated it. It was very popular with one of the girls in her dorm who played it over and over and over every day loudly enough for everyone in the surrounding rooms to hear it.
Personally, I like the song.

1. Have you filed your state and federal taxes yet?
Done last weekend, but to be very clear: I didn't do jack on them. Beast did 'em all, including his dad's.
2. When do you traditionally file?
Usually not till March. We had to do it earlier this year because of the #@&$( FAFSA.
3. Are you expecting a refund or a balance due this year?
I think we're going to net a return of about $100 between state and federal.
4. Do you file them yourself manually, with help from software, or do you take it to a tax professional?
We pay for nothing except TurboTax. The last couple of years, we've had someone do FIL's, but Beast did those this year as well.
5. If you are expecting a refund, what would you be most likely to buy with that money?
Gosh, I already think I spent it on Wednesday when I paid the sponsorship fee for Sparky's anime club for an event. At my library. It's win-win for everyone.
6. What’s the biggest thing you’ve ever purchased with a tax refund?
I think, early on, we used one for the down-payment on a car.

Rock 'n Roll Fridays

(Link in meme-roll)
Aerosmith

1. Dream On “Every time that I look in the mirror, All these lines in my face getting clearer. The past is gone. It went by like dusk to dawn. Isn’t that the way. Everybody’s got their dues in life to pay.” Do you pay dues or something such as a membership in a union, church, civic group, gang, etc.?
Crap, my gang dues were due yesterday! Damn it all... I, like Groucho, wouldn't care to belong to a club that wanted me as a member, and I'm really unlikely to pay for the privilege to be in a group. I don't even donate to my alma mater, the school my son is most likely attending in the fall. I do tithe at church, however. That's not membership, though, not in my way of thinking.
2. Angel “Without your love, I’m nothing but a beggar. Without your love, a dog without a bone…” What is your favorite dog breed?
I do like labs, and greyhounds. But honestly, at this point, I'm not liable to be fussy. Dogs=good fun but they make me sick.
3. Sweet Emotion “You stand in the front just a shakin your ass. I’ll take you backstage you can drink from my glass…” Have you ever been backstage at a concert to meet the band? If not, what band would you like to meet backstage?
No. And...no. 'Twould ruin the whole thing for me, I think.
4. Walk This Way “So I took a big chance at the high school dance with a missy who was ready to play…” What was the first song you ever danced to at a school dance?
Bud will love this: "Seasons in the Sun"
5. Crazy “You’re packin up your stuff and talkin like it’s tough. And tryin to tell me that it’s time to go, yeah. But I know you ain’t wearin nothing underneath that overcoat. And it’s all a show, yeah.” Ever worn your PJs in public?
Hmm, well, not really. I have taken Sparky to school a couple of times in my PJs, but otherwise, no. On the other hand, the youth mission trips involve wandering around in the 'public' areas of our sleep site in my pajamas to some extent.
6. Cryin “I was cryin when I met you. Now I’m tryin to forget you. Your love is sweet misery.” What is the worst film you went to see in the past 5 years?
I wasn't all that enthralled with Speed Racer, to be honest, but it wasn't horrific. I don't spend money on a movie unless I'm pretty damn sure it's got some redeeming characteristics.
7. Draw The Line “Checkmate honey beat you at your own damn game. No dice honey I’m livin on the astral plane. Feet’s on the ground and your head’s goin down the drain. Oh heads I win tails you lose….” What is your favorite board game?
Life. I have no idea why I love it so much, but I do.
8. Big Ten Inch Record “My girl don’t go for smoking, and liquor just makes her flinch. Seems she’ll go for nuthin, ‘cept for my big ten inch… Record of a band that plays the blues…” What was your favorite record (or CD) when you were 18 years old?
Maybe "Paradise Theater" by Styx, or the soundtrack from "Jesus Christ Superstar"--possibly some Billy Joel. I can't remember, to be honest.
9. Janie’s Got A Gun “It’s Janies last IOU She had to take him down easy and put a bullet in his brain…” What was the last IOU written for that you either gave or received?
I don't do IOUs. Ever. Giving or receiving. There's just no point; I either don't borrow or gift the 'loan.'
10. Jaded “My my baby blue. Yeah I’ve been thinkin bout you. My my baby blue, yeah you’re so jaded. And I’m the one that jaded you.” Are you jaded on a subject or issue?
Politics. And a lot of other things.
11. I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing “I don’t wanna close my eyes. I don’t wanna fall asleep cause I’d miss you baby And I don’t wanna miss a thing….” What was the last event that you missed that you regret?
I can't think of a thing. I tend not to spend time regretting this sort of thing.
12. Rag Doll “Yes I’m movin, I’m really movin. Sloe Gin fizzy, do it til you’re dizzy. Give it all you got until your put out of your misery.” What is the most miserable thing that happened to you recently?
Realizing that I'm working for someone very like PsychoBoss again. Sigh.
13. Love In An Elevator “Love in an elevator, lovin it up when I’m goin down. Love in an elevator. Livin it up when I hit the ground…” What is the most unusual place that you have made love?
Right. Nothing doing. That's a completely different blog from this one.

Friday Five

(Link in meme-roll)

1. What is your favorite section of the newspaper?
I'm a sucker for the Op-Ed pages.
2. Sunday comics or weekday strips? Which comic is your favorite?
I don't read 'em anymore. They just stopped being funny to me, overall. Beast shows me the good ones when he sees 'em.
3. Do you read your daily horoscope? Do you believe in it?
Nope. Never.
4. Does the paper become bird cage lining, do you recycle, or does it get thrown in the trash?
We use it for the guinea pig cage liner, and we recycle the rest.
5. Where do you read the paper? At home, at work, or elsewhere?
At home.
The only paper I still read at all regularly is the local weekly paper. It doesn't have cartoons or horoscopes, one of the reasons I like it.

Fifteen

[01] What do you plan to do in fifteen minutes?
Probably still working on a Friday meme. Why are there so MANY Friday memes??
[02] What do you plan to do in fifteen hours?
Hmm, wonder what I'm doing tomorrow. Maybe making dinner, maybe taking a nap, maybe buying plane tickets. If I do the latter, I can also move on to making hotel reservations.
[03] What do you plan to do in fifteen weeks?
Gearing up for Youth Sunday.
[04] What do you plan to do in fifteen months?
Celebrating the completion of Sparky's first year of college. I hope.
[05] What do you plan to do in fifteen years?
Thinking more seriously about whether I can retire or not; I'll be 62.

Sunday Stealing

(Link in meme-roll)
The Very Late Meme
Sending healing thoughts out to Bud....

1. Make a list of 5 things that you can see without getting up:
The TV (NASCAR, blergh), Beast in his reading glasses (!), a bag of GS cookies, a pink-and-purple giant koosh, four Valentine's cards.
2. How do you style your hair?
Just past shoulder length all the way round, with bangs in front. This means lots of options for styling, but quite often it ends up in a braid.
3. What are you wearing now?
Jeans, long-sleeved T (Property of THE LIBRARY) and the rest of the usual stuff.
4. What's your occupation?
I work in the library (hence the shirt) as the cataloger. And occasional reference. And Security--that's my next purchase, actually, is a Security T-shirt for work.
5. What do you hear right now?
People in the room currently talking some version of English that involves a lot of car stuff, and the race on TV.
6. Who was the last person you hugged?
Spark(l)y, when I went downstairs awhile ago.
7. What is/was for dinner?
Probably Wendy's or Subway. I just told the Jet and Sparky I'd take 'em somewhere so Beast doesn't have to watch us eat while he fasts.
8. What did you do today?
Slept, worked on our trip stuff, memed, Facebooked, slept, read, memed...another cold has me in its grip.
9. Dog person or cat person?
Dog. No contest.
10. If you had to change your name, what would you change it to?
Why they hell would I share that on the internet? I'd probably be hiding from someone if I did this.
11. What was the last thing that you bought?
$150+ worth of groceries.
12. If you could afford to go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I'm going to Italy (and England) in a couple of months. That'll do.
13. Where do you see yourself in five years?
Right here, though hopefully on a new couch. Maybe we'll be done paying off Sparky's college bills already. ha ha ha
14. Where's your birthmark?
That's for only a few people to know. You aren't one of them.
15. What are you doing this weekend?
This.
16. Which book are you reading at the moment?
I'm in the middle of Jewels of the Romanovs, Secret Gift, and a Modern Library lecture (on CD) about Hamlet. And something at work, which I just started Friday and can't remember now.
17. The last movie you've seen?
I can't remember what I saw at a theatre last, but Beast and I watched the last 45 minutes of Home Alone last night on TV.
18. What are you doing tomorrow?
Taking Beast to the hospital for a test, babysitting him the rest of the day afterwards. Whee.

Sunday 7

Name the seven factors that most likely did or could cause you to not complete college.
(suggested list)
  1. Financial reasons. I went to a private college and my dad was ... I can't remember if he was retired or just not making a lot of money. Don't know where they found the money, but they did.
  2. Family illness. If either of my parents had gotten seriously ill (or worse), I'm not sure I could have continued, either emotionally or financially. They were both in their 60s at that point, after all.
  3. My own illness or other medical issues. I didn't get sick much in college, but had I developed anything major, I'm pretty sure I'd've dropped out and headed home. I suspect my parents would have pushed me to finish the degree if I could. I had my sister Ellen as a role model for that after all; she continued taking classes throughout her treatment for aplastic anemia, treatment that included regular--sometimes daily-- blood transfusions.
  4. Not finding friends. The college I went to was 1,000 miles from my home, and I was fortunate to be assigned a wonderful roommate and to find great friends. Had I not...I would NOT have lasted my freshman year.
  5. Changing majors. The school I went to had a lot of options, but due to its size, it couldn't be good at everything. If I'd picked something I knew it wasn't good at, I would have moved. Probably. ;-)
I'm stretching, even with that last one, because there is basically no way I wouldn't have finished college. I was (am) the stereotypical Good Girl following her Good Girl sisters who all finished college. My Black Sheep brother did NOT finish his degree until he was in his 40s, and I had lived in the subtext and angst of my parents' feelings about that for 10 years before I left home. I wanted to make them proud of me. And believe me when I say that it would have taken a Major Act of God for me to come home--I dreamed of getting the hell out from the age of 13 on!

Patrick's Place

(Link in meme-roll)
Saturday 6

1. Counting paintings, photographs and other artwork, no matter who created it, how many pieces do you have hanging on your walls in your home?
I would say it's somewhere north of 50 things--there's something on virtually every wall in the house, including the basement and bathrooms.
2. In which room of your house do you have the most art?
Depends on what you consider art. If it's just the walls, then probably our bedroom but if all decorative elements are considered then it's a closer call--could be the living room.
3. Describe the one that you think is the coolest?
I like the papyrus from Egypt. I like the photo of Copenhagen. I like the Ikea framed print of the lighthouse. I really like the fruit girl I painted. I can't pick one. They're all perfect. For us. Sigh. OK, maybe the painting Beast's grandmother painted for him when he was a kid of the stagecoach. It's pretty cute and I love the frame too.
4. Describe the one that has the greatest sentimental value to you.
To me, it's the painting in the living room done by my second cousin (? Dad's cousin) as a wedding gift. It is a painting of Canyon de Chelly--which I've never visited, but it was such an unexpected gift that it means a great deal to me.
5.
Take the quiz: What Artist Should Paint Your Portrait?
Who Should Paint You: Alfred Gockel
All American yet funky, you inspire an artist's imagination
And while not everyone will understand your portrait, you will!
I have never heard of him, and the sample shown doesn't inspire confidence that I'd like his painting of me, but he's American so I guess that's good, right? As for me being funky--hah. HAH!
6. If an artist actually asked you to pose (clothed) for a local artists’ group so that they could all paint your portrait, would you do it?
Sure. Why not? It'd be interesting to see what people did with me, but I'm pretty sure I don't have the 'strong features' necessary for this sort of thing.

Gimme Three Steps

1. Has anyone ever got angry with you for flirting with their partner or date?
Uhm, no? I certainly don't remember doing anything like that, so I guess I don't know any psychobitches.
2. What is your favorite movie line or speech? (Set the scene so we appreciate it in context.)
At the beginning of the movie "Heathers", the popular girls are playing croquet:
Heather McNamara: It's your turn Heather.
Heather Chandler: No, Heather, it's Heather's turn. Heather?
Heather Duke: Sorry Heather.
This makes me fall out EVERY time I see it.
3. What is something that has happened to you that you would consider a miracle?
That tumor? Was benign. Woot!
4. What do you try to stay away from?
Negativity.
5. What is it too late for?
Me to give birth.
6. If you could write three newspaper headlines, which would come true, what would they be?
AIDS cured, worldwide!
Food delivery systems fully dictator-proofed!
Laughter discovered to cure cancer!
7. When was the last time you apologized to someone?
This morning. It's fairly regular--I apologize a lot.
8. If you to find out now that you would very well known after you die, what do you think it might be for? (Feel free to pick an accomplishment that you have yet to do.)
I'm kinda hoping it's not for hanging my boss from one of the light fixtures in the reference area at work.
How about just for surviving as long as I have?
9. Are you easily angered or able to handle every situation calmly?
Depends. I'm getting a better handle on my temper.

1. Go Your Own Way "Tell me why Everything turned around

What is the longest vacation you have ever been on?

2. Hold Me "There's nobody in the future so baby let me hand you my love

4. You Make Lovin Fun "I never did believe in miracles, But I've a feeling it's time to try.
I never did believe in the ways of magic, But I'm beginning to wonder why"
Do you believe in magic/witches/alchemists?
Not as such. I believe there is an awful lot in the world that we don't fully understand, though.
And I do believe in miracles.
5. Dreams "Now here I go again, I see the crystal visions I keep my visions to myself
It's only me Who wants to wrap around your dreams and ...
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell? Dreams of loneliness ... Like a heartbeat ... drives you mad ..."Your newest daydream was about what?
I don't remember the last time I daydreamed. It's not really my thing--never has been.
6. Say You Love Me "Have pity baby, just when I thought it was over. now you got me runnin', runnin', runnin' for cover. I'm begging you for a little sympathy

My boss. None of us feels like she's got our backs.
7. Sara "Sara, you're the poet in my heart Never change, never stop

I'll come by"
Do you live in a house, apartment or with a relative?
House, with my family.
8. Over My Head "You can take me to paradise and then again you can be cold as ice
I'm over my head but it sure feels nice"
How have you been over your head lately?
I've been pretty well buried at work for the last couple of months, not only in work but emotionally. My boss is making everyone nuts.
9. Songbird "And the songbirds keep singing, Like they know the score,

What season of your life are you sailing through?
Early autumn, when all the crickets start whining.
11. Silver Springs "Time cast a spell on you But you won't forget me
I know I could have loved you But you would not let me"
Any unrequited love story for you?
Nope. All my love has been requited. ;-)
12. Little Lies "No more broken hearts, we’re better off apart. Let’s give it a try, tell me tell me lies…"
Ever told a lie to someone so to not hurt their feelings when they asked for the truth?
I tend not to do more than varnish the truth a bit. These things'll bite you in the ass.
13. Warm Ways "You.....made me a woman tonight sleep...until the morning light
I … I'm waiting for the sun...to come up.... I can't sleep...with your warm ways"
If you have lost your virginity, and if you can remember the event, was it as amazing as you thought, or were you less than happy with the results?
Hello, I have a (biological) son! So, yeah, virginity is a long-forgotten state for me, and losing it wasn't exactly poetic or romantic.

Blogthings Explosion

You Are a Nonchalant Valentine
You're happy to celebrate Valentine's Day if your sweetie is into it, but it's really not your thing.
You think love transcends commercial holidays, and you definitely don't put a lot of stock in V-Day.
Your perfect Valentine's Day date is low key and easy... No gifts if you can help it.

You think it's a lot more meaningful to spend a quiet night at home together than to go to a fancy restaurant.
OK, pretty close to reality.

You Should Play Poker
You are a crafty person, and you're always looking at things from all angles.
You can read people well, but you can also hide your feelings when you need to.
You are a natural strategist, and you're always thinking a few steps ahead.
You don't mind putting all your chips in when the time is right... in fact, it gives you a thrill!
Uhm, yeah, but it sure doesn't sound overly complimentary.

Your True Eye Color is Chocolate Brown
You are a down-to-earth and practical person. You don't get caught up in flights of fancy.
You appreciate organization and thrive under structure.

You generally feel that being rebellious is a waste of time. You take commitments seriously. If you say you'll do something, you follow through until it's done.
You know that the key to life is to not go it alone. You love to cooperate with others.
DEFinitely like structure, but don't think rebellion in and of itself is always bad. See Egypt, Tunisia, et al.

You Are Nonfiction
You are mentally sharp and clear-minded. Facts matter to you, and you remember them well.
You are curious about the world, and many subjects interest you. You have a real thirst for knowledge.

You are willing to listen to any point of view, as long as it's backed up with facts and logic.
You have nothing against fiction, but you definitely feel like the real world is interesting enough as is!
Bullshit. I'm currently reading one (excellent) YA novel and one (VERY poorly edited and written) nonfiction. Well, and a picture book of the Romanov jewels, which is sorta halfway in between. lol

Connections

1. Nowadays, just about everyone knows a couple who first met online. Among couples you know, who has the best story?
Two of my nieces and my brother met their current spouses online. I think ELizabeth and Ken make the cutest couple. I'm not sure any of the 'stories' are particularly exciting except to family members.
2. Who among your real-life acquaintances might you never have been friends with if you hadn’t gotten to know each other online first?
Amy. Hands-down first person I thought of, though I can think of at least 3 or 4 others further down the friend food chain.
3. Of people you know online only, who would you most like to meet in real life?
Molly.
4. In the past 365 days, what’s the longest you’ve gone without connecting in any way to the Internet, including email?
Couple days, at most. Even overseas last summer, I logged in pretty regularly, at least once a day.
5. Who is the least-connected person you know in real life?
My brother-in-law Dean.

Two incomes is definitely better than one.
5. Hot air ballooning, parasailing, speed boats, these are some of the things that I enjoy.
Wait, you DATE these things? This is a normal dating site, dude, not a pervert hangout!
6. This not really my thing, but here it goes. I’m a pretty laid back. Things I like to do include, hanging with friends. I am willing to try new thinks.

8. I'm in no rush-- but also don't plan to become a serial dater.
I'm not at all sure how these two statements are mutually exclusive.
9. The constant evolution of self makes this difficult to write, as does the filter of subjectivity
May I introduce you to #2 while I make my escape through any random single-syllable word?

Curious as a Cat

(Link in meme-roll)

1) What was your last conscious thought before dropping off to sleep last night?
I usually do puzzles or read till I'm asleep, so my last coherent thought was something to do with "5 or 7?"
2) Name a book you've read that had a strong setting.
The Book of Ruth by Jane Hamilton.
3) If you were to start a foundation to help people, what group/problem/issue would you tackle?
Literacy for girls.

I wish it were as warm outside now as it looks in this picture. And if the picture is asking what I want to drink, I'll have a Long Island Iced Tea.

Blogthings Explosion

You Are a Geek
You're a total brain, and you're smart enough to know that glamour is often skin deep at best.
You do your own thing, and you ignore what the crowd is into. You're much happier that way.
You probably have an amazing set of interests and friends. So what if you're on the weird side?

And just because you're a geek, it doesn't mean you're [not?] cool. You could be a "chic geek."
This shouldn't really come as a surprise to anyone, I think.

+ + + + + + + + + + + + +
You Are Rock n' Roll
For as long as you can remember, you've been a bit of a rebel and a loner.
You like to do things your own way, and you're quite productive when left to your own devices.
You are talented
but misunderstood. People tell you that you have so much potential, but they don't know that you're using it.
If you ever become famous, people will call you an "overnight success." No one understands the work you do!
Well, of course I'm rock 'n roll! What else? However, I'm not sure the description is quite on.

+ + + + + + + + + + + + +
You Are a Zebra
You are a multifaceted and complex person. The front you provide is even a bit of an illusion.
You are a study in contradictions and strong contrasts. You believe that there is more than one way to look at things.
You also believe in accepting yourself. You feel different from everyone else, and you embrace that.
You inspire others to be their true selves and even flaunt what they've got!
Isn't everyone multi-faceted and complex? Most of this I agree with; the parts I don't I just don't like the phrasing.

+ + + + + + + + + + + + +
You Should Bake Chocolate Chip Cookies
You are the type of person who has more friends than you can count. You're very popular.
You are outgoing and fun loving. You don't worry too much... you just enjoy life.
You may be well liked, but there's nothing bland or ordinary about you.
You like to write your own rules.
Who knows what you'll throw into your chocolate chip cookies?
Not so much. OK, I like chocolate chip cookies, but the description is not me at all!

+ + + + + + + + + + + + +
You Are Chic
You are a natural leader, and it's likely that you have climbed the way to the top of the social ladder.
You aren't superficial, but you are image conscious. You love admiration and approval.
You are also a bit of a perfectionist. You are unnecessarily hard on yourself.
People love you just the way you are - flaws and all. You don't have to be perfect.
Between the cookies and the drink, I seem to have morphed into someone I don't recognize!

+ + + + + + + + + + + + +
Your Dark Element is Earth
You are well grounded. You nurture and comfort everyone that you know.
You are naturally diplomatic, but it isn't easy.
You can be indecisive and contradictory at times.
You work hard, but you also get discouraged. You can be withdrawn and moody.
You tend to give so much to others that you forget to take care of yourself.
Good to end on a positive note--this is pretty damn creepy!

The Sunset Meme

1. What is your favorite Mexican dish?
Un platillo de buñuelos.
2. When you were a kid, did you get started on your homework right away after school, or did you procrastinate?
I rarely had homework as a kid, but usually I did at least some of it right away. I think. Honestly, I don't remember much till high school and then it was term papers and that sort of thing; those I tended to write maniaclly in full the day before they were due. Not much has changed over the years.
3. What is your favorite store for home furnishings?
Bed, Bath & Beyond. They have bloody-EVerything!
4. When you were young, did you like school lunches?
Better than bringing my own, for sure! The milk in my thermos was always warmish. But I didn't get school lunch often, just for Baked Cheese Sandwich days. The other days I had to bring my cheese sandwich from home. Which I did. Every single day. My mom repeatedly asked me if I didn't want something besides cheese; nope. Cheese, butter, bread=happy Cat.
5. Is religion a crutch?
Some people use it that way. The theory of crutches being that you eventually wean yourself off of them, right?
6. In your region, what is the “big” high school sport?
Well, hell, isn't it ALWAYS football? It's the one the gets the most money anyway. [Nope, no bitterness there, eh?]
7. Do you consider yourself rich?
Yes. Rich in friends and life and family and the things that matter. Also, we have jobs that cover our bills, a house, good neighbors, indoor plumbing, heat, access to health care, food...I'd say we're better off than a LARGE portion of the human race. I try to never forget that.
8. Which of these would you have the best chance administering:
A) CPR
B) Heimlich Maneuver
C) Changing a flat tire
I can do A and B with out a problem--just got re-certified last year--but I'd probably need help with the tire. Haven't actually done it for thirty years.
9. Which dance would you prefer to learn & why:
A) Salsa
B) Hip Hop
C) Waltz
D) Swing
C. Looks like it would have the least impact on my joints of the choices.
10. What’s the worst news you’ve ever delivered to someone?
"Grandma/Gram/Aunt Jean died." Although there was WAY more angst when we told him the dog died several years earlier.
11. Name something you learned in college that had nothing to do with classes or academics.
Heh. Oh my, the first thing than I thought of isn't going to be shared, so...ok, how to live with myself after over-serving myself on (free) cheap champagne. Before I passed out/threw it all up, what I remember about my behavior is pretty humiliating.
12. New variation on an old question: If there’s a song in your head that just won’t get out, what is your favorite (or most repeated) line in that song?
When we've been there ten thousand years,
bright shining as the sun,
we've no less days to sing God's praise
than when we first begun.

I Saw It on TV

1. What new TV show rocks your world this year?
I'm enjoying Harry's Law even though it's pretty hokey.
2. What is your least favorite ethnic food, and what makes it your least favorite?
I'm not really a fan of most Asian food. Not sure why, though it probably has something to do with my upbringing; my dad refused to eat rice.
3. When does liking someone a lot become loving that person?
When they notice and start liking you back.
4. Is there a job you would do for free, and is it your current job?
I love my job, but due to changes in the past couple of years, I would no longer do it for free. If I could never hear from my boss again, that would help ameliorate things.
5. What is one person/thing that inspired you to take action of some sort?
Nelson Mandela and apartheid in general led me to write the only letter to a government official, ever. And the high school kids at my church have led me to places I'd never have considered going on my own (both geographically AND metaphorically).
6. Though you might not believe in it, would you like fate to exist?
Nope. If we all had no choices, what would be the point of doing anything?
7. Tell us about a news story that truly shocked you.
This whole story about Egypt over the last couple of weeks is stunning! I'm surprised in a good way!
8. What's something you're looking forward to?
Our trip this spring.
9. What characteristics do you despise?
Not really excited about know-it-alls or meanness.

1. Which is easier for you: looking someone directly in the eye when you’re telling them something that’s very personal, or looking someone directly in the eye when they’re telling you something that’s very personal to them?
I don't look in anyone's eyes in general but in either of these situations, I'm more likely to do the latter.
2. Who is the person you find easiest to make eye contact with during a conversation?
Beast, I guess. I'm not sure why some people make me NOT want me to look them in the eye. It's odd.
3. If you could change the color of your eyes, would you?
Nah. I'd change the shape of my eyes, first.
4. Take the quiz: What Color Should Your Eyes Be?
Your Eyes Should Be Blue
Your eyes reflect: Innocence and sweetness [snort]
People find you to be: Attractive, adorable, and irresistible [oh, the irony]
Your best trait: You truly love to make other people happy
What's hidden behind your eyes: A calculating mind
But, I really don't want blue eyes. So it's probably just fine that this isn't very accurate.
5. If you could choose a new option for eye color, besides blue, green, hazel and brown, which would you choose to add to the genetic mix?
You left off gray, and black. :-) I like black.
6. If you were given x-ray vision for one hour, where would you go first?
The mirror. I need to figure out what's going on in my head. Also, need to check my knees.

Wednesday Wickedness

(Link in meme-roll)
a day late
Ronald Reagan
I should warn readers that I couldn't, and can't, stand Reagan so if you are a fan, this is your warning to stop reading now.

1. A tree's a tree. How many more do you need to look at?
Are you concerned about mankind's intrusion into forests and jungles?
Well, this comment explains James Watt as Secretary of Interior. Betcha Reagan would have been kinda pissed off if he had run out of trees to cut down on his ranch....
2. All great change in America begins at the dinner table.
What is the biggest change that you've seen in your lifetime with the U.S?
I don't remember this--my first political memories surround Watergate--but I know that in my early years there was a lot more respect for and expectations of our political leaders. Our expectations and respect have dropped to nil.
And of course, food has changed a lot too.
3. All the waste in a year from a nuclear power plant can be stored under a desk.
Do you feel nuclear power is still the fuel of our future?
I have never, EVER, felt nuclear ANYthing was anything that we should base our future on. I grew up near Rocky Mountain Arsenal and 100 miles north of Cheyenne Mountain. My inlaws lived near Three-Mile Island. I've never felt that nukes are my friends.
4. But there are advantages to being elected President. The day after I was elected, I had my high school grades classified Top Secret.
How did you do academically in high school?
I was co-valedictorian.
How come Republican presidents, especially in the last few decades, have been so proud of being stupid, or at least proud of being poor students??
5. Concentrated power has always been the enemy of liberty.
How closely have you followed the uprising in Egypt? Thoughts?
Not VERY closely, but enough to feel like I'm holding my breath for things to turn out well for the people there.
Why do the presidents who make the most noise about personal liberty always work the hardest to destroy personal liberties?
6. Democracy is worth dying for, because it's the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man.
Do you feel a political system is worth dying for?
No. My freedom and that of others is worth dying for.
7. Don't be afraid to see what you see.
What do you see that scares you?
My husband's peace of mind in shards around him.
Also, what in the HELL does this quote mean?
8. Each generation goes further than the generation preceding it because it stands on the shoulders of that generation. You will have opportunities beyond anything we've ever known.
Tell us about an advance that you think we will see in our lifetimes that is not in existence.
I would really like a better food-delivery system for the whole world. There is no reason to have people starving to death while others have more food than they (we) know what to do with.
It's great to have opportunities, but criminal not to USE those opportunities to better humankind.
9. Facts are stubborn things.
What is something that most think of as a fact that does not ring true to you?
That the rich earned their money honestly, and should be allowed to keep every red cent for themselves. Really? Why? Because, unless you dug it out of the ground, minted (or printed) it and made the economy run on it all by yourself, you had help.
10. Freedom prospers when religion is vibrant and the rule of law under God is acknowledged.
What do you think of politicians that use religion as justification of their beliefs?
I think they should do some time-like a year or two at least--in the inner city washing the feet of the homeless 8 hours a day every day of the week. Or some other example that shows that they are actually LIVING their faith, not TALKING about religion.

You Are Extremely Empathetic
Whenever someone you love feels a certain way, you can't help but feel that way too.
The emotions of others deeply affect you, and it's easy for you to be moved to laughter or tears.
You are very in tune with your surroundings. You immediately pick up on the vibe of a room.
You don't like to see anyone feeling discomfort or pain. You want to make everyone around you as happy as possible.
I'd say this is pretty damn accurate. I've even had confirmation of much of this from a former boss.
+ + + + + + + + + + + + +
Your Dominant Personality Trait is Prudence
You are a [semi-]responsible and together person. You like structures and schedules.
You don't mind having a long to-do list... in fact, you sort of like checking things off on it.
You are a planner
, and you rarely act on impulse. You know what you'll be doing tomorrow.
You are dependable and polite. You do your best not to give anyone any trouble.
OK, as far as it goes, sure.
+ + + + + + + + + + + + +
You Are a Crow
You are highly intelligent and have a lot of mental strength.
You value self-reliance, and you work hard every day to improve your life.
You believe that life is magical, and you are always looking for new and exciting opportunities.
You follow your own path, and the turns you take are often unexpected and inspired.
Great. Nice. I'm a crow. Actually, I like crows, but this isn't exactly a compliment, is it?

1. What was the first car you ever owned, even if it was a hand-me-down?
The first car I co-owned--I've never been the single owner of a car--was Beast's late-70s era Pinto from college.
2. Which car drove better: the first one you ever drove or your current car?
Given the answer to the first question, I am undoubtedly SAFER in my current vehicle, which is (somewhat ironically) also a Ford. The Pinto didn't drive badly, but it was inherently terrifying.
3. Which car did you feel safer in: the first one you ever drove or your current one?
The first cars I ever DROVE were my dad's Chevy Malibu station wagon and my mom's Toyota Corolla. Perfectly safe, but I was a young driver and nervous-ish. Then again, I was a teen, so nothing bad really was likely to happen to me, right? (hah--the folly of youth) The only time I don't feel safer in my truck, though, is in winter when I'm sliding all over. Trucks=not good in snow/ice.
4. Take the quiz: Are You a Good Driver?
You Passed Your Driver's Test
Congratulations, you got 7/10 correct.
You're a good driver - at least, when you want to be.
I would love to know which three I got wrong since I'm virtually certain that at least one of them is a local stipulation.
Also, "right away"???? For real? How can I possibly take a test like this seriously when the author of it doesn't even know how to spell "right of way"?
5. Consider the last “close call” you had with another driver on the road: was it your fault or theirs?
Well, mine, I guess, but really it was the fault of a looming 25-foot pile of snow at the edge of the road that I couldn't see around without pulling (slowly) into the street.
6. If you could place “traffic light” cameras at any location to catch any kind of violation, where would you place them and what violation would you be hoping to put a stop to?
Blergh. I would like a politeness-cam to catch people who honk or gesture wildly and have their mouths and hands duct-taped (hands to the wheel, mouth just closed).

Margaritaville

1. Tell us about a time that you had way too much Jose Cuervo.
Since I don't really like margaritas, the only time I've had too much tequila is when our Spanish class was given free drinks upon checking into our hotel in Puerto Vallarta. All of us got a little tiddly, except those who didn't like the drinks (Tequila Sunrises) and gave them away to others who got downright blitzed. None of us knew there was alcohol in the drinks till we noticed certain people behaving quite unlike themselves. I was of the tiddly clan, not the blitzed subgroup, by the way.
2. Do you agree with the following statement: "The older you get, the faster time goes by"?
To a certain extent, I do. I once had a friend of my mother's try to explain scientifically why this happens. I still don't get that, but it does seem like the days fly by in a way they didn't do when I was, say, 8.
3. What do you usually do during your "down time?"
This.
4. When it comes to the opposite sex, do you feel you have a grasp on 'em - or do they continue to just surprise you?
People, as a rule, surprise me. It has nothing to do with sex, or even gender. [Note that I left the whole 'grasping' commentary out, though I admit to having a little giggle at it....]
5. What is your home town famous for?
My HOME town is famous for once having the biggest shopping mall, under one roof, in the world. It was torn down years ago. My current place of residence is NOT famous, though the town where I work has a certain fondness for winter and rodents.
6. How many romantic relationships have you had?
Real or imagined? In the 100% real camp, I'd chalk up 4 or 5.
7. What's the best concert that you've ever been to?
U2's most recent tour was excellent, both because they were great but also their opening act was outstanding (unlike the Vertigo tour).
8. Which famous person would you like to meet? Why?
It would be interesting to have a pint with the Edge. 'Course, I'd have to have something besides beer, but....
9. Has a newspaper or television reporter ever interviewed you? If so, what were the circumstances and what did you think when you read or saw what you said?
I run from extended microphones, so no TV time for me. However, I have been interviewed a couple of times for local papers about stuff at the library. Both times the reporters did a good job of capturing what I said and making me sound relatively intelligent.

However, recently the local paper did an interview with a first-time author in our area and she mentioned having talked to the "person in the children's room" about some issues she was having with the cover art, and she got everything about our conversation wrong from the fact that I'm not the Children's Librarian (note the difference in title there), and what I said to her was not reported accurately. And, yes, she is, at least ostensibly, a reporter for that paper. The consequence of all this was that the actual Children's Librarian was caught flat-footed and feeling like people might read this and think she favored censorship. What a mess. The good news: the owner/publisher of the paper is a friend of mine so at least I can suggest a couple of things that would keep this from happening in the future. It's called "research", which most reporters know they should do after an interview.

The Queen's Meme

(Link in meme-roll)
The AfterLife Meme

1. Have you ever seen an angel? If not, do you believe in them?
I have not, and I'm ok with that. Have you noticed that biblical angels tend not to bring unequivocally good news? And the first words out of their mouths are usually, "Don't be afraid"? Yeah, don't think I need to meet an angel.
2. Tell us a real ghost story. Ever seen one?
Nope. Only on TV.
3. Have you ever had a near-death experience?
Nope. Thank God. I'm hoping for only the one at the end.
4. It is midnight in Heaven. You have just arrived. You are told that you can choose any kind of "Heaven" you want. What would that be?
What does midnight have to do with this? I'm sure my heaven will be 100% appropriate for me, and I have no idea what that means. I'm kinda hoping there'll be dogs.
5. You have come back to Earth as something or someone else. Describe that entity.
Hopeful it won't be any kind of insect. Wouldn't mind being a cat.
6. It is your first morning in Hades. What fascinating aspect of the underworld will you visit first?
I've already spent a lot of time in hell. Hopefully, after I die, I'll be done with that.
7. Scientists have just created a new pill that induces immediate immortality. You can live forever! What are you going to do with the rest of your life?
Memes, of course.
