This song was chosen in honor of Father's Day.

 

1) In this week's song, Lucie Arnaz encourages us to hop a ship and join her in Cuba. Is your passport up to date?

Weirdly, we were talking about this at work on Thursday. I think my passport is due to expire in 2027. Or maybe next year. I should probably check. One of the many things I should do.

2) She sings that Cuba is a great place to enjoy wine and Panatelas. Do you like the smell of a good cigar?

I actually do. A GOOD cigar, outside, or the smell on a winter coat is very homey. A bad cigar is grounds for murder. 

3) Lucie said her Latin Roots CD represents "the rhythms of my soul" and is a tribute to her father, Desi Arnaz. Cuban-born Desi starred on Broadway and in nightclubs but was best known for co-starring in and producing the 1950s sitcom, I Love Lucy. When you think of I Love Lucy, what's the first thing that comes to mind?

Lucy's crying -- 'waaaah waaah' -- which is an interesting commentary on what we used to think was funny.

4) While Lucie's parents – Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball – are famous for their TV work, Tony-nominated Lucie has found her greatest success on the stage. She inherited their love of performing, saying, “My parents were always happiest when they were working.” What have you inherited from one or both your parents? (It could be anything from your work ethic to your eye color.)

My dad's side of the family has Very Strong Genes: three of the five kids look just like him physically. Since all three of those kids are/were girls, that's not necessarily great. My brother looks like Mom's side, more and more as he ages. 
To be slightly deeper, we were all instilled with a desire to be the best at whatever we did, which is good...until it becomes neurotic.

5) Though "Ricky Riccardo" often mangled English on I Love Lucy, Desi's English was very good. Lucille Ball admired his facility with languages and encouraged him to speak Spanish to their children so that they would be bilingual. When you were growing up, did your family speak any language other than English?  

Some would argue we barely spoke English! My parents were all about speaking properly (I remember being scolded for saying "liberry" when I was quite young), but their pronunciation was decidedly questionable ("warsh", "piz-za" (z's, no 'ts' sound -- sounds like the city in Italy). 

6) Desi Arnaz often performed "I Will See You in C-U-B-A." Is there a song that reminds you of your father?

There are two: "Mairzy Doats" and "The Hokey-Pokey." I teased my dad whenever he complained about my "loud noise" (i.e. music) by singing "Mairzy Doats" all the way through. He also had a whole routine he did around "Bill Grogan's Goat." 
He's currently furious (I can hear him yelling from heaven!) that I'm not naming any hymns, so I'll throw in "How Great Thou Art" and "Joy to the World." 

7) After Lucie's parents divorced, Lucille Ball remarried and Lucie got a stepfather, Gary Morton. Lucie appreciated how positive Gary always was about Desi. Decades later, when she married a man who already had children, Lucie said she better understood what a tough role stepparent can be. Did you have a stepparent? Are you a stepparent? 

I have no step-parents, nor am I one. I am, however, quite proud of being "Mom #2" for a multitude of kids I knew when I was teaching Sunday School, running Youth Group, babysitting, working with. I love all 'my' kids. As I get a little older, I find it interesting how many of these kids (now adults) have come to me to vent about their 'actual' parents, or at least for advice on how to deal with them. 

8) As a single dad, Desi lived south of Los Angeles in Del Mar. Lucie and her brother, Desi Jr., spent school vacations there, going to the race track, bowling, and fishing with their dad. Share a happy memory from one of your school vacations (Christmas, Spring Break, or Summer).

It's been a long time since my childhood, and while it was not a perfectly, endlessly wonderful one, distance (and comparison) has made it look damn good. I loved jumping rope and playing jacks and creating little neighborhoods for my brother's toy cars to park in; vacations were endless and stressful and occasionally even fun.

9) Father's Day began in Washington state. In the early 1900s, Spokane resident Sonora Smart Dodd listened to her minister deliver a sermon celebrating Mother's Day and devoted herself to similarly honoring fathers. A century later, more money is still spent annually on Mother's Day. Why do you suppose that nationally we still make more of a fuss over Mother's Day than Father's Day?

School is in session for Mother's Day, not so for Father's Day. Also, so many of my peers in school had divorced parents making it harder to get buy-in from both parents to support each other that I think dads have gotten short shrift. I'm not a Man's Rights person, but I do think the patriarchy has a lot to answer for in this area, in the 'erasing' of fathers as important and the glorification (but no support for) mothers.

Uh, yeah. I'm kind of scary, actually.

2) The video begins with Maren Morris finishing her cigarette before getting behind the wheel. Do you allow smoking in your car?

I'm not sure I know anyone who smokes. Generally, though, no. No smoking in my car.

3) In this song, Maren admits she's lied. What's the last fib you told?

"I'm fine."

4) She mentions having her radio on the FM dial. Are you loyal to a single radio station? Or do you spin the dial?

I'm a spinner, and for at least the end of this cycle, I have access to Sirius XM. More channels; still nothing to listen to.

5) Maren was inspired to write this song while on a long car trip from Nashville to Los Angeles. When do you get your best ideas? (In the shower, behind the wheel, over lunch with friends ...)

When I'm asleep, I guess. Assuming I get good sleep, everything looks more do-able in the morning.

6) She performed this song on Saturday Night Live last year. The host that week was John Cenna Cena. Do you follow professional wrestling?

Oh hell no!

7) In 2016, when this song was popular, Alex Rodriguez played his final Major League Baseball game. He has embarked on a second career as a broadcaster. Would you be comfortable on camera?

Not without a ton of rehearsal. I can barely speak coherently without cameras these days.

8) A 2016 study revealed that 43% of Americans own mutual funds, many in their 401(k)s and IRAs. Are you involved in the stock market?

I'm part of that 43%, and Beast has always taken care of that. Yet another steep learning curve I'm looking at in the next months.

9) Random question: You have something awkward and embarrassing that you simply must tell a pal. You know your friend will not be happy with the news. Would you prefer to deliver it by email, in a phone call, or face to face?

Face to face. I hate stuff like this, but it's better to get it done than let it fester.

I know the whole thing pretty much by heart. 54 Christmases of hearing it more than once will do that that.

2) The Christmas with Elvis album hit the stores in October 1957. Were you already preparing for Christmas back in October?

Nope. I'm not really even preparing for Christmas now. There's not really a Christmas for me this year.

3) Clearly Elvis liked a flocked white Christmas tree. Is your tree flocked, aluminum or pine green? Real or artificial? Or do you skip the whole tree thing altogether?

My tree is fake, green, and in its box in the closet.

4) Back in the late 1950s, Elvis left his hair its natural brown color. In the 1960s he began having it dyed black. Do you have a salon appointment scheduled between now and year end?

I haven't had a haircut since sometime in September. I probably should get in and do that. One more thing I "should" do....

5) Have you ever peeked, looking for a Christmas gift you know is hidden for you somewhere in the house?

Nope.

6) Which do you prefer, candy canes or gingerbread?

I can't really eat hard candy anymore--it hurts my teeth--and I'm not a huge fan of gingerbread. Throw me some home-made fudge, though, and I'll love you forever.

7) Is anyone receiving a home made or do-it-yourself gift from you this year?

Hah. No.

8) Do you wrap holiday gifts in paper, or do you take the gift bag route?

There will be a tiny bit of wrapping with paper to do before Christmas Day for my great-nephews nearby, but otherwise, I think Sparky's getting his stuff in the shipping box in which it arrived.

9) This time of year is big for charitable fundraising. Here's your chance to plug a cause or organization that's near and dear to you.

Look, this year I would really like everyone to find someone who needs a hug, a shoulder on which to cry, and ear with which to listen, or something of the sort. Take the time to do that every day till Christmas. It's free, and God knows we all need someone to recognize our hurts and humanity.

Beast, you-all here online, God.

2) As a kid, Harry wanted to be a lawyer because he can see "both sides." Are you good at seeing both sides of an argument?

Yes, to my own loss quite often.

3) He can't decide which is favorite color -- orange or blue. Help Harry out: which of those colors do you prefer?

What a combination ... especially around here, he'd be fine wearing both. I prefer blue. Orange is not a favorite.

4) Harry says he prefers older women, but would never go out with someone older than his mother. Do you think age disparity matters in romance?

Not once both parties are out of their teens. There's something decidedly skeevy about an adult dating a teen, by which I mean 10+ years age difference.

5) He admits to a big crush on Adele, who is six years older than he is. Who are you crushing on right now? (It doesn't have to be a celebrity.)

My heart belongs to Beast, but my eyes can't help but notice well-spoken guys of any age with a good sense of humor and lack of entitlement.

6) It makes Harry's skin crawl when he sees people use their teeth to open bottles. What creeps you out?

Butt cracks. I have seen far FAR too many of them at work. Doesn't matter the gender, the age, the relative cleanliness of the rest of the person, I do NOT need to see your but while you're using a library computer!!

7) When he's on the road, his go-to food is tacos. Do you like Mexican food?

I do. I actually really love real Mexican food. It's kind of one of my comfort foods.

8) Harry has never smoked. Have you ever been a smoker? If you quit, how did you successfully kick the habit?

Thank the Good Lord from keeping me away from this particular addiction! I don't remember anyone smoking that was in my life during those formative years when you're trying to impress people. My sister Ellen smoked, as did (does?) her husband, but otherwise I had a remarkably smoke-free adolescence. Unless you count those of my friends who smoked pot, of course....

9) Random Question: As she pulls out of her parking space, an elderly woman in an old car scrapes an expensive car. Then she drives away. You witness the whole thing. Do you make a note of her license plate and leave it for the owner of the expensive car? Or do you just mind your own business?

Hmm, that's a great ethical conundrum. In my town, it's quite likely that I know one or the other of these people, so that is going to color my decision a bit. Generally, though, I'm more likely to pretend I saw nothing. We have a pocket of horrible, entitled jerks living in the area; it's always nice to see them get theirs.

Shannon's Moments Meme, Part One
I kinda just did this a couple of weeks ago, but it's enough different that I'll do it again.

1. Do you like blue cheese?

Not alone, but with some other goodies (steak, etc.) it's dynamite!

2. Have you ever smoked cigarettes? If yes, how did you quit?

No, thank God I never started. I'm virtually certain I'd never have been able to stop.

3. Do you own a gun? How are your feelings about gun control/2nd Amendment rights?

I do not, because I know myself well enough to know exactly how dangerous that would be. I am not anti-gun, however. If you like hunting, or collecting armament, fine. I just do not see any reason for ANYone to own a functional auto or semi-auto. There's only one use for them, and it ain't dead-heading peonies!

4. What is your favorite flavor of water or liquor flavors?

I like my water plain old water-flavored, preferably not overly chlorinated. I like my liquor fairly flavorless generally too. Plain Stoli, maybe a lime twist, is sufficient. I really can't do extremely sweet drinks at all anymore...shudder.

5. Do you get nervous before a doctor visit? Why?

Nope. Serves no purpose except to make my blood pressure rise, which isn't helpful. I figure, by the time I've committed to seeing the doctor, I've already decided I need help solving whatever problem I've got at the moment.
This is all despite the fact that I actively hated going to the doctor as a child since it seemed to always involve an injection for something or other. And the doc was super-creepy. If I ever get that vibe off anyone now, I'm outta there.

6. How do you like your hot dogs?

Cold straight out of the package. If we're talking about food-truck dogs then no relish, heavy mustard, and some onions. I'll get ketchup too, unless I'm in Chi-town where it's pretty much illegal.

7. Although it’s been asked a lot, tell us about a favorite movie that you haven’t shared before.

I can't think of a movie that I haven't talked about. I don't really see that many movies, not compared to most people, so I go to the very few I love regularly to answer this. I've always liked "Fiddler on the Roof" mostly for the cinematography, and after actually seeing Siberia, it's even more amazing. Ditto for "Dr. Zhivago" a movie in which I could happily turn off the volume and watch in silence.

8. What do you prefer to drink in the morning?

Diet caffeinated pop. More caffeine = more better.

9. In a dating situation, have you ever misrepresented yourself to seem cooler or hipper? (Yes we know for most of you it was long ago…)

Of course. I never in my life felt hip or cool, but who admits that to someone they're interested in impressing??

10. What’s your favorite piece of jewelry? Why?

I have a necklace my mom's best childhood friend gave me that she got while she was a missionary in Persia (Iran) in the 50s. It is mother-of-pearl, painted with two different scenes--one on either side--and too large and an odd-length for most outfits. I love it to death though. I love it for its own sake, but also because it reminds me of Mom and N. and how weirdly the world changes--N. gave it to me in about 1979, just before the Iranian Hostage Crisis commenced; I loved wearing it as a stealth thing that people who were yelling about killing all Iranians wouldn't/didn't get.

11. Favorite hobby? Tell us about it so we understand it.

I read. A lot. Because my life is terminally boring--and that's fine--and I like to crawl inside other people's heads and see what motivates them. One of the books I'm reading right now, The Home for Wayward Clocks is reminding me that this is one of the best parts of reading. All the everyday people doing everyday things that seem so outlandish to me, but not to them.

12. Do you have A.D.D., or have you suspected it?

Nope. Except in the sense that I am rarely ever doing just one thing anymore. It's blogging-and-TV-watching, music-and-cataloging, conversation-and-cooking.

13. What’s a thing you dislike or would change about yourself?

I need to do better about thinking further ahead than the next half hour on the Really Big Stuff in Life. I tend to be a little hedonistic and don't properly plan things out. Which, if you knew what my calendar looked like, would surprise you, I'm sure.

14. Middle name? Like it or not?

I have one. I like it. It's short, succinct, and uncommon, though hardly rare. Y'all have definitely heard of it. There's a very famous doctor that has made it more accessible. I've always been glad, secretly, that it wasn't "the" middle name that all the (popular) girls in high school seemed to have.

15. Name three random thoughts you might have on this week:

I might never catch up on cataloging at work, but I have nearly run myself out of project-work. Beast has 7 days, which is worth celebrating. It's beautiful outside today, tempting me to go out and sit on the porch which will undoubtedly lead to me feeling absolutely shitty later. (see above re thinking ahead)

16. Name 3 drinks you regularly drink. Tell us a bit about them.

I regularly drink dark diet soda, water, and pretty much nothing else. Occasional glasses of white soda when I'm feeling like I need to de-caffeinate closer to bedtime.

17. Current worry:

I'm weaning myself away from incessant worrying. I am, however, starting to think about what I'm wearing for this upcoming wedding, and what else I should be taking for the trip. Also on my mind is what Sparky needs to take, WHICH IS RIDICULOUS because HE IS 23 and I don't need to pack for him anymore!!! And this is why I have to stop worrying about stuff; it's almost always just about this stupid.

18. Current annoyance:

I can't think of anything that annoying right now. Overall, I would say that there is a large rash of idiotic behavior on the Big World Stage right now, and I'm so very sick of idiots.

19. Favorite place to be in the summer? Give us a wee bit more than “the beach”.

Well, in my case it's not the beach; it's the mountains. Any mountaintop, a ways away from "civilization" with wildflowers, sunshine, and rarefied air. I'm not fussy. I haven't had anything of this sort in a very long time and I'm craving it.

20. How do you usually ring in the new year? If forced (how we’d do that without Judd coming to your house, if you even know who he was) to do something new, what would it be?

I don't do anything very exciting. We stay home. Often we fondue. I'm usually in bed either well before midnight or not too long after. I have no interest whatever in hanging out or driving near drunks, so yeah.

21. What have you done this summer that’s special? Pictures please.

I haven't done anything this summer to speak of. Our vacations this year are April and September, so the summer has been 13 weeks of work. That's fine. But I don't got pix.

22. Have you ever walked into a room with just shoes on?

Well, if shower shoes count as shoes, then yes.

1) This was Hall & Oates' first #1 hit. Can you name another of their popular songs?

"I Can't Go For That" which (today) makes me laugh just typing it. And "Rich Girl" and so many others. These two were really the soundtrack of my formative years.

2) Darryl Hall and Sara Allen were a couple for 30 years, and he wrote this at the beginning of their long relationship. That makes this a very public love letter. Are you good at writing love letters? Would you rather tell the person how you feel, face to face? Or do you let your actions speak louder than your words?

I'm better at communicating "on paper" but I think I'd rather hear this sort of thing F2F, so I go that route most often.

3) In the song, Darryl and Sara are waiting for the sunrise. Did you see the sunrise this morning? Or did you sleep in?

Hah! I was up at 6:45 when Beast got up, and then reset the alarm for 9. No sunrise for me today!

4) Both Hall & Oates hail from the Philadelphia area. Hall is a native of suburban Pottstown, which was a stop on the Reading/Philadelphia rail line made famous in Monopoly. Do you like playing board games?

I *adore* board games! Or actually games of all kinds--except maybe "Candyland" at this point--but rarely have the opportunity to play.

5) John Oates grew up a few miles away from Pottstown in North Wales. Decades ago, North Wales' biggest employer was a cigar factory. Do you like the smell of a cigar?

A good cigar smells delicious. But I loathe the taste of kissing someone who's smoked any cigars at all.

6) Daryl Hall now hosts a music show, Live from Daryl's House, that you catch free online. Do you typically watch shows from your computer, pad, phone or TV set?

Still watching on the TV. Old-school. But this show looks like it might be worth a watch at work.

7) Hall & Oates are currently on tour. Are you seeing/have you seen a concert this summer?

Nope. I'm not a huge fan of crowds, although I do like live music. However, post-Nice, I'm feeling extremely skittish about large crowds.

8) Daryl and John have been friends for 50 years, even living together at the beginning of their careers when money was tight. Another successful duo of the rock era, Simon & Garfunkle, also met as teens but they forever seem to be feuding. What do you think makes for a lasting friendship/partnership?

There is some kind of chemistry that has to stick, but also humility and lack of ego. It's very much like a marriage; you have to keep the long view in mind and stick to taking responsibility for your own shit.

9) Random question: Are you quick to try new things?

Depends on what sort of things we're talking about. Sometimes, yes. Other times, not so much. I honestly can't figure out any pattern: some foods I'll try (hummus), others make me gag at the thought (apples and strawberries and lettuce). Some technology yes (DVR yay); some, no (Instagram? Why?). Some fashion is cool; some of it just makes me laugh, or cry. I try to be open though.

Do you own a tablet of any kind?

I have a Nook. Beast does as well. And his new work computer is a Microsoft Surface Pro.

What’s something people always assume about you that isn’t true?

That I've read every book in the library where I work. It's also possible that many people think my only emotional setting is anger. It's definitely not!

On a scale of 1-10, how much do elevators scare you?

I guess that would be a 1. Unless I can go to 0.

When you’re upset, do you vent to people or do you keep to yourself?

Heh, I think we can all acknowledge that I'm a venter. I've been working on trying to keep some things from spewing. It's haaaaarrrrrrrrrrd.

Have you ever watched a meteor shower?

Yes. I imagine it would be wonderful out in the country, on a mountain or something. In town, on our back porch was underwhelming.

Do you tend to put things off until the last minute?

Uh...er... yes.

How do you react to random strangers suddenly trying to make conversation with you?

I live in the Midwest. People do this ALL THE TIME! As do I. It's expected! ;-)

Do you have a lucky number?

I have numbers I really like, but I don't really do the "lucky number" thing. 3 is good. So is 16. And 8.

Would you go out to dinner with Oprah?

If she's buying, sure! It better not be a Weight Watchers meal, either!!

Did you ever play sports?

I was on the 7th grade girls volleyball team, and the 8th grade basketball team. Hated both, though I wasn't as awful as I thought I was then.

Do you feel guilty if you throw food away?

YES! Holy cow, this makes me nuts, and I do it all the time because I'm not my mom, who kept food WELL PAST it's possible safety date.

Do you think you could make it as a baker?

Sure. I love baking. It's eating the stuff that causes the problem. And making time to do it and cleaning up.

Are you one of those people who are wearing scarves with everything?

Not with everything, no, but I have learned the joy of scarves in the winter in a drafty, chilly building.

Have you ever been in a castle?

I have! Many times! Well, many castles I guess. German, Chinese, Scottish, Russian, English and Italian. And one American that I can be fairly sure that no one reading this has heard of much less visited.

When you were little, did you ever play with Playdoh?

Not until my nieces had it. I missed Playdoh for myself by about 3 years.

Would you rather write a mystery or love story?

Mystery. I'm pretty sure I could toss together a decent love story in about 18 hours' worth of work. A mystery would take more time. Really, though, I'd rather write a good book, regardless of genre, and that will take more than 18 hours for sure.

Tell me about your worst fashion mistake:

Every day, my friend, every day.

Do you hate it when people smoke around you?

I'm allergic, so yeah, it's not my favorite. I'm not all militant about it, but I will move away as far as possible from smoke.

How are you wearing your hair right now?

I have short hair, so it's the same everyday. Today it's pretty flat and blah, kind of like my attitude. Having just looked at a picture I just posted on Facebook, however, "flat" is a relative term. My hair is just curly enough to be fluffy even when it's having a shitty day.

When’s the last time you were sick?

I haven't felt very good all week, but I haven't been actually sick for awhile. Knock wood.

Would you rather have OJ or milk with your breakfast?

Neither! OK, I'll go with OJ, but it had better be fresh and pulp-free!

What were you doing thirty minutes ago?

Cleaning the guinea pig cage. I think?

Do you own any school related clothing articles?

I'm wearing pajama bottoms from my college alma mater right now. They are orange and blue, so it's a color scheme I can get behind today. (I don't have anything that is Panthers, though I really like them too.)

Would you rather call people or have them call you?

I'd rather not talk on the phone, period. Text, email, IM...unless you're my son. :-)

Can you carry a tune?

Once I had my surgery last winter and recovered, my voice came back! I can sing. Not great, not solo-worthy or anything, but I can sing.

Who was the last person who unexpectedly texted you?

Maybe one of the people at one of my meetings. Not a huge surprise: I had called her in a bit of a panic. I didn't expect her to text. It's all good. For now.

Who do you text the most?

Beast. Sparky is a close second.

1) The lyrics mention his respect for "90 proof and Marlboro Red." What was your most recent drink? When was your last cigarette?

I've never even tried smoking. There is nothing about it that has ever appealed to me in any way. Yuck. (sorry, smokers.... My favorite sister smoked, so it's not like it's a deal-breaker for liking people)
The last drink I had was probably a couple weeks ago: I have a bottle of Stoli stashed (hidden) so that I can have a pop once in awhile when Beast isn't around. If it were out in plain sight, it would be gone before I got more than two drinks, which is about what I had two weeks ago. Welcome to my world. I'll probably have a glass of wine at P.E.O. next Tuesday, God willing.

2) They also reference "singing like crazy fools." What's the last song you sang?

Out loud, it was probably the closing hymn last Sunday. In my head, well, I have had all kinds of stuff running around this week, from Michael Franti to Mozart to Miley Cyrus.

3) Blake Shelton won a Grammy for his performance of this song. Crazy Sam won the award for "most improved bowler" when she was in third grade, and it's now in a closet somewhere. Do you have any trophies? If so, where are they?

I have no trophies. I think I still have the prize certificate for winning the Best Political Cartoon in 9th grade Social Studies, and I won a turkey for Thanksgiving when I was 10 or so. Those are my claims to fame.

4) Blake is currently on tour. The merchandise sold at concerts brings in big money for the artist. Do you have any tour memorabilia (like a poster or t-shirt)?

I have a few T-shirts, most of which are too small for me these days. And we've bought CDs at concerts, too, from the opening acts especially, but not exclusively.

5) In addition to The Voice, Shelton is on TV a lot with his Pizza Hut commercials. What chain restaurant is nearest your home? Do you eat there?

Nearest my home, according to Google, is Subway and the pizza place that just brought us dinner (local, so that doesn't count). I haven't stopped at that Subway since before Sparky graduated from high school, so at least 3.5 years. Next closest chain is the McD's in the city I don't work in; our village (hah) is smack in between two bigger towns. I have indeed eaten food from that particular McDonald's.

"Silent Night" of course.

7) Shelton and Miranda Lambert were married in front of 550 guests. Do you enjoy weddings?

Generally, yes. I don't like over-the-top weddings, where people have obviously tried too hard. My three oldest nieces have had lovely, comfortable, friendly, fun weddings with nobody getting plastered and acting stupid.

8) The wedding took place on a big Texas ranch. Have you spent much time on a farm or a [r]anch?

Nope. No farmers in my immediate circle, though there are several at my church now. While both my parents had green thumbs, they were not interested in working on a farm EVer. Dad especially knew that farms were really REALLY hard work.

9) In 2013 he helped organize a relief benefit concert for victims of the Oklahoma tornado[e]s. Tell us about a charity you support.

Part of our money donated to our church supports Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, and we support it in person as often as we can by visiting PDA sites to help out. Beast was part of a group doing cleanup about a month ago in a town not to far from us that was badly damaged by a tornado recently. The year after Katrina, several people from our church were in the Gulf doing cleanup there (in Mississippi, which was heavily damaged and flooded, but got considerably less attention than New Orleans). PDA works with Red Cross and other grass-roots organizations providing support and funds to people who are already doing the work, like their partnership with churches and organizations in the southwest right now dealing with all the Central American kids flooding the area.
And every year our church produces a simply humongous pile of boxes for Christmas Child. In just over a decade we have packed the equivalent of about 10 boxes per member.

Suit and Tie

1) When was the last time that you got dressed up, or to borrow from Mr. Timberlake, "fixed up to the nines?"

I think it was probably the last wedding I went to, which was (I think) Jessie & Jay's about 18 months ago. I don't do "dressed up" too often. The last time I wore a dress was probably Rosellen's wedding three years ago.

2) Justin Timberlake is known for his threads. Do you try to keep up with fashion trends?

Nope. I buy what's comfortable and looks nice. Though I do like fun shoes, as long as they don't break the bank.

3) While on tour, Justin has a cigar roller on call so that he and the band can enjoy a "gentleman's club" atmosphere back stage. Do you enjoy the smell of a good cigar?

Stipultaing the "good cigar" part, I don't mind them burning/being smoked too much, but kissing a cigar-smoker is icky, even if it's been several days since the last one.

4) Justin appeared on Star Search when still in grade school, and he's been working ever since. When Crazy Sam was that age, her only "job" was to load the dishwasher and for this she earned her $1/day allowance. Did you work when you were a kid?

I helped a little around the house and ran errands for Dad when he was fixing stuff, and I was 100% responsible for cleaning my room every Saturday morning of my life. No pay.

5) JT has appeared several times on Saturday Night Live, a show that premiered before he was born. Who is your most favorite ever SNL castmember of all time?

Of all time? That's pretty hard to choose. I really liked Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. Bill Murray was good. Gilda Radner was exceptional. And loads of others.

6) Justin is a very good golfer (6 handicap). Will you play this summer?

I don't golf. I haven't even mini-golfed in several years. I watch tournaments when Beast is interested, so I know the big names well enough to dislike some of them, but it's still really boring as far as I'm concerned.

7) A round of golf requires hours outside in the elements. Have you ever endured a painful sunburn?

Yes, several times, but never because of golf.

8) When they were young, Justin dated Britney Spears. Obviously, it's been easy for him to keep up with her successes and problems over the years. Do you wonder how one of your exes is doing?

Only in a vague way. It has been over 27 years since I dated them and I haven't seen them at all in hat time.

9) Ever since his days with N'Sync, Justin Timberlake has supported music education. Did your grade school offer music classes? If so, do you remember any of the songs you learned then?

We had music alternating with gym every day in elementary school. Somehow I missed the signup in 5th or 6th grade for band, but we sang every other day. I liked it, but it was totally uncool. Hence, I was totally uncool. Bill K. once turned around in the middle of a song and asked why in the HELL I was singing, so I stopped for the day. Sigh...peer pressure. He was a such a little shit....
ANYway, we sang through the music books, but the only songs I remember are the national songs ("America the Beautiful" etc.) and "Git Along Little Dogies" and "Home on the Range."

(Amazing) Just the Way You Are

1) This song is about a girl who can't accept how pretty she is. How do you respond to compliments? Do you accept them graciously, or do you get embarrassed?

Depends on who is doing the complimenting and on what. I'm better than I used to be. "Thank you" is sufficient, I've found.

2) Bruno says he takes inspiration from a variety of musical styles -- everything from rock to reggae to hip hop. What kind of music do you listen to most often?

I'm like Bruno--except for the young, male, adorable, Hawaiian, and musically talented parts--and like a little of everything. One of these days I'll copy and paste my Spotify favorites here. Just so's ya know, though: this song is on that list.

3) Bruno's uncle was a professional Elvis impersonator, and as a little boy Bruno also performed on stage as the King. When you picture Elvis, do you think of early rock'n'roll Elvis from the 1950s, Technicolor Hollywood Elvis of the 1960s, or the rhinestone jumpsuit Elvis who performed in Las Vegas?

I generally try to focus on the young, naive, and gorgeous version.

4) Bruno plays several instruments onstage, including piano, guitar and congas. What instruments can you play?

Flute, handbells, and I can pick out a tune on a piano, albeit slowly.

5) Bruno is touring all over the country this summer. What's the last concert you attended?

U2's 360 tour. It was a great show. Getting in and out -- not so super, but the opening act was great, and so was the main attraction.

6) Unlike some other stars, Bruno doesn't demand a lot of luxuries on the road, but he did admit to TMZ that he insists Wet Wipes be provided for his dressing room. If you could ask your boss for anything, anything at all, to make your workplace more comfortable, what would you request?

We'll start with the big one: my own office. Since that's unlikely, the follow-up would be to put me somewhere quieter that doesn't involve the a/c blowing on my neck all summer. Oh, and clean ductworks. Twelve years in the building and they've never been cleaned: you should see the walls and ceilings around the openings....ugh.

7) Rumors are flying that Bruno might become a judge on American Idol. Are you an Idol fan? Do you watch any of the other "talent search" shows -- The Voice, America's Got Talent, The X Factor, etc.?

I do not watch any of these. I hate Simon Cowell, and the rest are just copies of the first, and I would really like to see something original. Like, hey, bring back variety shows!

8) Bruno is an unapologetic cigarette smoker. Do you smoke? Have you quit? Or did you never start?

I did not know he smoked...tobacco anyway. Nope, no dark and smoky history for me. For which I am (now) very grateful, since I'm sure I'd never be able to quit.

9) Billy Joel also had a hit with the title "Just the Way You Are." If we were going to do karaoke, which version would you sing -- Billy's or Bruno's?

I know Billy's better. I like them both, but I have to give Billy the nostalgia points as well as a little more depth of meaning. Also, I don't think I can do Bruno's falsetto.

Yeah...my own meme...doing five weeks at a time today:

1) Share what you enjoy most about today's technology.

I love the connectivity, being able to communicate with people instantaneously, and keep track of old friends, with very little effort. It's also nice to be able to instantaneously answer random trivia questions.

2) Describe what you'd do with an extra four hours today.

Some of those hours would be spent sleeping. Maybe I'll actually use the rest to clean the stacks of paper off my desk here at home, or other projects. Actually, at this point in the day, I'm pretty sure I'll just sleep, but tomorrow I'd still have 4 extra hours, right?

3) Bedspread or comforter?

Right now, for the first time in my married life, we have a bedspread. It's quite odd. Having it not the bedspread itself.

Ah, Denver!! I wish I could say I'd taken this photo, but I had to find it online. That building in the middle has always been called the Mailbox by everyone in my family and most of my friends in school. But the background...mountains!! Miss them.

I never . ever . watch sitcoms anymore. Or, to be specific, I don't watch anything made after about 1990. They seem to all be well past stupid, which I can tolerate in Gilligan's Island but not people wearing modern clothes.

Once I realized what a total dickbrain Tom Cruise is, I pretty much swore off crushing on famous people. On the other hand, I really do like Bono. But not in a crushy/lovey way exactly.

Not in the immediate and personal sense. Our cabin was broken into when I was a kid, but not while we were around. I can't think of anything specific otherwise. I do wonder if I've blanked stuff out...?

Oh thank God I didn't have to put this puzzle together! What a nightmare. In general, I do like jigsaws. We usually take over the dining room table at New Year's and do one. I have no idea where that came from, but it's family tradition now. Weird how these sorts of things just sort of blossom. Last year we spent about a week trying to put a a picture of potato chips--this very one, in fact!--together, and got the frame done and that's about it. Nightmare! I have since donated that puzzle to the library at the local high school for kids to 'relax' with during finals week. Yes, I am mean.

The End of the Innocence

1) "The End of the Innocence" is one of Crazy Sam's favorite songs. Do you like it? Loathe it? Or is it before your time?

I love this whole album, actually, including this song. However, at the height of its popularity, I got awfully tired of hearing it on the radio.

2) Obviously Don Henley was a smoker back in the 1980s. Do you smoke? Are you a former smoker? Or did you never start?

I have never intentionally breathed in any sort of tobacco (or other) product.

3) Childhood is generally considered an innocent time. In what town did you spend yours?

I grew up in suburban Denver, in the house my dad built as soon as he was discharged from the Army after WWII.

4) Do you abide by "innocent until proven guilty?" Or did you come to your own, pre-trial conclusions about famous defendants like Casey Anthony and OJ Simpson?

Well, I came to evidence-based conclusions on O.J. because I believe he was absolutely proven guilty. However, I do generally abide by the letter of the law, unless I'm reading a murder mystery.

5) Is there an old TV show whose cast you'd like to see reunite?

Not really. Everytime this is done, the people look so bloody OLD that it's depressing. Besides, most of the shows I like are either currently on the air or so old most of the actors are dead (or virtually so).

6) Do you know how to ride a horse?

I have ridden a horse. I wasn't particularly comfortable doing it.

7) You're ordering ice cream. Cup or cone?

Cup. Cones are useless--I eat too slow.

8) Do you believe a gentleman should help a lady with her coat?

If she wants him to. Then again, I think a lady (uggghhh) should help people who need/want help with their coats too. Also, are we living in 1966 with this question?

The Not My Year Meme

1. Are you in a job that you truly enjoy?

I really love my job, though of late there are some aspects of my work environment that annoy the crap out of me. And I seem to have a perpetually bad attitude about dealing with the public, which is a bad sign indeed.

2. If you could do any job in the world what would it be?

If I could have my own office with a lockable door and speakers on my computer (thus eliminating the need for headphones) and do my current job, I'd be pretty damn happy. It's either this or going back to my 19-year-old self's dream of becoming a long-haul trucker.

3. If you could be a character in a novel who would you be?

Recently, I have begun to identify rather strongly with Gregor Samsa. Look it up.

4. When it comes to spending time with those you love, do you think it should be about quality or quantity?

Yes, that is BOTH are important.

We took Sparky back to college yesterday after a very strange spring break. When he arrived at home, his dad was in the hospital, which he chose not to visit much. Beast came home last Sunday, but was wackadoodle from the meds he was taking. On Tuesday, Sparky had to take him to the pain doctor for a cortisone shot to his spine. And the rest of the week, while I worked, I was regularly asking for updates from Sparky about Beast's condition. The only really fun thing Sparky got to do was go to the midnight release party for Mass Effect 3 on Monday with a friend.

In spite of all of this, it was a good week with him, his attitude was absolutely fabulous, and the times we were able to be together were good.

5. Is there a job/career you wanted but realized you couldn’t possibly do for one reason or another?

Well, the long-haul trucking kind of went bust because of my serious lack of skill in the backing-up-vehicles department. I'm much better now with that, but it's taken me over 30 years to achieve that.

6. If you could live anywhere in the world or out of this world where would you live?

I would love to go "weird" on this answer, but all I can think of is that I'd love to have a small home in the San Juans of Colorado.

7. Where would you most like to visit and who with?

I'd love to go bowling in Canada with Amy one of these days.

8. Which skill would you like to learn?

I'm going to find someone to give me bagpipe lessons. I am! Eventually.

9. What made you laugh today?

I've only been out of bed for an hour. Nothing very fun(ny) has happened yet. Yesterday, when I was supposed to be doing this meme, I did laugh at church a few times.

10. What are you looking forward to tomorrow?

Right now, I'm looking forward to coming home from work tonight and tomorrow night (at 7 and 9 respectively) and not having to worry about Beast being 'broken' again. That's enough for me.

11. What is your sign and do you believe in horoscopes, etc.?

I'm a Scorpio, and while the part of the description that deals with anger and passion seems to be fairly accurate, I don't really 'believe' in the planets telling me anything about myself.

12. If you could change one thing about your life thus far, what would it be?

I probably wouldn't. My life today would be substantially different if I changed much of my past.

13. If there was one charity you could give a huge contribution to, which charity would it be and why?

The ONE Campaign.

14. Should smoking be legal?

Smoking IS legal. It's just not allowed in places where your smoke pollutes my lungs.

15. What are your views on the smoking ban in public places?

Speaking as an asthma sufferer, I'm all for it. Some of my favorite family members smoke(d), and even they did (do) their best to stop because it's a grody, unsafe habit.

16. Why do you blog?

Boredom? Really, it's to use up my daily quota of words, and to answer goofy questions. I haven't had a great deal to say on the other blog for over a year, and that upsets me, but I'm rolling with it for now.

17. Do you have a favorite author?

No, I hate them all.
Of COURSE I do! I'm a book junkie. I just answered this question in the past few days, though so I'll just refer you there.

18. Can you play any musical instruments?

I can figure out one-handed piano, and I played the flute and piccolo in high school/college. Haven't really done much of either in the intervening years.

19. What would your ideal car be?

Functional, high gas-mileage, fun to drive, and NOT gray, white, or black. ;-) I'd love to have a reason to have a chocolate brown Jeep Cherokee, c. 1975.

20. Describe yourself in one short sentence.

"Wow, she's a total train-wreck, isn't she?"

21. What do you look for in a spouse/other half?

At the risk of being trite or soppy, someone who is good at things I'm not good at, and someone for whom I can be the same. Also, humor and intelligence is required.

22. Worst meal you’ve had?

There've been some recipes I've tried over the years that just did not work out right, that neither Beast nor I could choke down. I can't think of one specific one right now, but overall, I'm not really that fussy, so it has to be pretty damn bad to make me stop eating.

23. What do you do to relax in the evening?

This. Or read, do Sudoku, watch TV.... Sometimes I even have time for a long bath.

24. Do you get along with your siblings?

Those who are left, yes. I really enjoyed time spent with the two that are dead, but my oldest sister and I have gotten much closer in the past decade or so. I used to worship my brother, but he has become a thorn in my side as I've gotten older. Still, we get along fine, as long as we all play our roles appropriately.

25. Do you have any regrets?

Is there ANYone over the age of, oh, 3 years, who can answer this honestly in the negative?? Of course I do. Daily. I try not to dwell on them, but there are days when they are all I can think about; yesterday afternoon was like that. I'm not a lot of fun to be around in this mood.

1) These days almost everything comes with a disclaimer. Sometimes the disclaimer on TV commercials is longer than the description of the product itself. If you came with your own personal disclaimer, what would it say?

2) You can press a button that will make any one person explode. Who would you blow up?

Oh, any random NYC banker who was involved in the collapse of the economy will do.

3) Last week the Federal Drug Administration approved new packaging for cigarette packs that it hopes will discourage people from smoking. Some of the labels are very graphic. Do you think this is going too far or do you think the FDA is doing a good thing by making these labels?

Seriously, is ANYone going to read these and think it actually applies to them? Yeah, I didn't think so.

4) Many people I've known have lost their TV remotes only to find them later in their freezers or refrigerators. Where is the weirdest place you've left your TV remote?

Uhm, the kitchen, I guess, but just on the counter where I set it down when I went out there for a snack or something.

5) What is something you do when you're sad/depressed that really cheers you up (or at least helps bring you somewhat out of your funk)?

Listening to happy music helps, as does talking to people I like.

6) If I asked your past romantic partners if you were emotionally open, what would they say about you?

I have no idea. It's been 25+ years since I had a "past romantic partner" and I hope to hell Beast isn't going to talk to you about this!!

7) Sonic Drive-In has created a bunch of theme hot dogs for the summer (including a Chicago Dog, an All-American Dog, Baja Dog, New York Dog, and Chili Cheese Coney). With the Fourth of July coming up, surely many people will be eating hot dogs. What toppings do you eat on top of your hot dog?

I like cheese, onions, mustard, and ketchup. Yes, I am perfectly aware that makes me a heathen.

8) If Love Potion #9 is an elixir for love, what is your potion for moving on and dating again after a bad breakup?

I don't have a fucking clue. Really, think this through in light of the answer to #6. I guess my best advice is not to do anything stupid.

9) You have been given the opportunity to create a TV show of your own design -- any genre, any demographic, limitless budget. What is it called and what's the premise?

I'm sure there's a sitcom about libraries--note that I did NOT say "librarians"--out there that's just waiting to be done.

10) Last week a 14-year-old female Chinese Crested and Chihuahua mix named Yoda won the 2011 World's Ugliest Dog Contest. Do you think she's really the world's ugliest dog or do you find some cuteness in her?

I like dogs. This one is amazingly wrinkly, but still kinda cute. Sorry, I'm a sucker for doggy eyes.

Q1 - Smokin': What do you think of President-elect Barak [sic] Obama's decision to smoke cigarettes... Who cares, it doesn't affect his ability to lead; I care because kids will smoke as a result of his example; it bothers me, but as long as he does it in private, I'm okay with it; something else?

Hmm, I didn't know he smoked. How odd that this never popped into my consciousness over the course of the election. Frankly, I don't care, though it does make me wonder about his judgment, and about the way his campaign was run that I never knew that. Smoking isn't evil, and many people (leaders) in other countries smoke, so whatever. Let's talk about the economy.

Q2 - Books: Did you read any memorable books this year/books you'd recommend reading?

I've read several good ones, and I'll do my usual end-of-the-year post about them in a couple of weeks. Just finished a good one called Breath and Bones, by Susann Cokal, about Denmark, the Western U.S., and painting in the 1880s. Interesting.

Q3 - Take Notice: What do you think people tend to notice about you? Related... Is there something else you wish they'd notice instead?

I don't know what people notice, though I hope my basic intelligence shines through my bouts with stupidity. I think most people at the Reference Desk think I'm friendly, and people who see me elsewhere think I'm not.... It's because I'm very focused on what I'm doing, and often don't see people I know until I've "ignored" them (when I actually, really, didn't know they were in the vicinity).

The Spirit looks good from the trailers. The Reader should be interesting (the book was, anyway, and I like the casting choices). Would like to see Milk. Desperaux was a good book and I love Matthew Broderick, so that should be good.

Having said all that, I probably won't see any of them. We just don't go to the movies. Sad. I'm going to make a deal with myself to see at least some of the foreign films they bring to town next month for the little mini-fest we have. It will, undoubtedly, be me alone however. I won't be able to talk Beast into it without a bunch of hassle.

1) If you spoke English with an accent other than the one you currently have, how would you chose to sound?

I'd love to have a faint Italian or Russian accent. Don't ask me why....

2) Be honest: how do you feel about people who smoke?

I don't understand how you can start smoking nowadays, knowing all the health problems smoking causes. It confuses me. I give older people a bit of a pass since I do understand how difficult it is to stop. Generally, I just wish people wouldn't do it since it makes it hard for me (and ultimately them) to breathe. I guess I mostly feel sorry for smokers, except for those who leave their butts all over the place. Yuck!

3) Whose death touched your own sense of mortality the most?

My sister's. She was way too young and vital to die when she did. And I was old enough to 'get it.'

4) What has been the most difficult promise you have ever kept? Why?

"To love, honor, and cherish...as long as we both shall live." There are days when those are the last things I want to do.

This was taken last summer in our front yard. The tree is a newly-planted pear tree, and those critters are cicadas. We were inundated; they are truly hideous-looking creatures that somehow also manage to be fascinating. Their wings are amazingly complex.
I like this photo, beyond the obvious weirdness factor, because of how green everything looks. It gives me hope that spring (and summer) will come again. Eventually.
