The key for colors:
  • Black font means it'll probably get bumped down so I don't drown in Sad or Heavy. Keep in mind I have approximately 430 titles on my next/TBR lists, and those titles do not include the piles of books in the house that I need to slot in
  • Tan font means those will probably make the cut on the Actual IRL Next List
  • Green font is the Maybe, We'll See pair. I've been moving the Qur'an down the list for literally years. Maybe I'll just buckle down and do it this spring/summer
I just finished a (very good) book about early Christianity so I need a break from that for awhile. I'm sure there will be a Michael Connelly that finds its way into the mix--I've been plowing through his backlist for eons, reading them in order with lots of breaks because they are often really dire; the most recently finished one came out in 2011.

(I haven't done this meme for over a year! Shame on me!)
Things on the Staycation To-Do List
I called Sparky in full-panic, bring-the-tears mode this morning. His very sensible advice: make a list of EVERYTHING that needs doing (my reply, "but that's going to be a Very Long List" and he said to do it anyway. He's a smart kid.) Once I pulled myself together and he knew I wasn't going to jump off a roof (mostly just kidding--seems painful), we hung up and I got started. The list is one full side of lined notebook paper. I fully expect it to grow* before it shrinks measurably. Some of the things that I bet aren't on most people's late winter list are below.
  1. Make appointment with attorney to meet with Sparky and me about my will and PoA stuff.
  2. Fix banister Beast broke when he fell in September.
  3. Cancel SiriusXM.
  4. Call and order CPAP supplies for myself.
  5. Figure out how to submit paperwork to County electronically (find said pwk, too).
  6. Fix light switch in laundry room (there's a short whenever I turn it on).
  7. Empty Beast's closet in our bedroom and organize All The Stuff.
  8. Fix mailbox.
  9. Shred Beast's credit cards.
  10. Re-do cell phone plan (remove Beast's bro, decide about keeping Beast's number, get Sparky a new functional iPhone--I hate iPhones, btw--and get the account information updated).
  11. Get rid of extra car in garage that hasn't been driven since before I did this meme the last time.  smh
  12. Call social work person at Beast's facility with questions about Medicaid form.
  13. FIND BEAST'S BLOODY WEDDING RING AND CROSS/CHAIN! (I had them at the hospital in September--haven't seen them since and have searched high and low around the house since)
* In fact, while I was typing this up, I filled up the top page and moved on to Page 2. Thirty-one total items. Some of them are 10-minute easy-peasy things. Some of them are potentially weeks-long projects. It feels like there are more of the latter than the former.

Things Starting with L
(continuing a series started in 2010 with A)
  1. Lagging. I constantly feel tired. I'm lagging all over the place, both in the sense of being behind and in the sense of being slow.
  2. Leftovers. I just threw away half a casserole from 10 days ago. I'm so irritated that despite both of us being around, neither of us finished it. Plus, it left a trail of icky smell in the house when I carried it outside. Yuck.
  3. Loose ends. I'm not sure what I ought to be doing instead of this, but I know that it involves cleaning. Floors, kitchen, cobwebs in corners, something....
  4. Land. This time of year, this part of the world is beautiful. The fields are mostly harvested now, the trees are approaching the full color spectrum, and the weather.
  5. Light. On the other hand, I'm not loving the increasingly short days. It's just getting darker and darker....sigh. I'm not ready for winter, this year.
  6. "Lovely." The British version of "That's nice." I still am catching myself saying that when people tell me something that I'm not really interested in knowing.
  7. Legal issues. Continued worrying, on Beast's part mostly, about why our state followed through on something from another state that is in the process of being thrown out of court in the original venue.
  8. Library. Well really, I pretty much have to mention this. Perhaps now is a good time to confess that I seem to have misplaced the latest Harry Potter book somewhere just as I got to the last 50 pages. I'm sure(is) that it is somewhere in the house, though that's not narrowing it down much.
  9. Love . Another one that has to be on the list. I feel so fortunate to have the people around me that I do. They didn't "just happen" to be there, and I'm unwilling to take credit for thinking ahead to create such an awesome support system. Also, I really really love Sparky. He's such a great guy.
  10. Luggage. So, if I never put away suitcases, does that mean vacation never technically ends? OK, seriously, I need to just bite the bullet and put away all the crap including The Bag of Liquids and all the brochures that I picked up.
  11. Lean on me. Beast had another 30-minute trip up the stairs to bed an hour or so ago. His back is SO bad again. Very discouraging. He can't feel his hands, and he can't feel his feet, so climbing stairs is tricky. Plus he's got "shooting" pains in his extremities, and nearly constant, 24-hour spinal pain. I'm living with an invalid who just refuses to admit the truth.
  12. Lyrics. Bob Dylan needs to come down off his high horse and just accept the damn award. He makes me so tired, honestly.
  13. Laughter. Truly is the best medicine. I really don't think I could make it through a day without finding something to laugh at. There is so much absurdity in the world. Like Bob Dylan blowing off the Nobel committee. lol

Thursday 13

(Link in meme-roll)
Rules for Facebook* (and other social media sites as needed)
  1. Every day, post pictures of your kids captioned with things like "my heroes", "my babies" (even if they're in school or older), and "amazing" things they've done. Like take their first step, join a sports team, smile in their Kindergarten photo, etc. Be sure to focus on the firstborn especially.
  2. Every day, tell people you are grateful for whatever your latest kick is: working out, skywriting, creative toenail clipping. Take LOTS of pictures of yourself "proving" You Did It!
  3. Be sure to momjack every post your friends make about their kids and/or their day by injecting yourself and/or your kids/family into their story. "I remember when your baby Angie was diagnosed with pediatric leukemia because that's the day Verdant-Green found out she was going to sit in the blue chair at daycare!! Crazy, eh?" Or, "Your dad was nice. I wish he hadn't died. Remember when he drove us to my 16th birthday party after I thought my party was ruined because my mom and dad's car broke and they told me I'd have to cancel the reservation at the roller rink. I was so mad that day!"
  4. When people you don't like very much ask you questions, be sure to respond by answering someone else. Who didn't ask that question. For example, Jane asks, "How is your knee feeling where you fell on it?" be sure to answer "I can't believe how much my knee still hurts, Kathy! You didn't tell me it would hurt this long!"
  5. Train your kids to have the same fake smile you wear in all your selfies and to plaster it on whenever a camera appears.
  6. Thank God publicly at least weekly for your husband and kids and extended family because they are awesome.
  7. Leave people wondering if you actually have a job because you literally NEVER talk about it. If you happen to be James Bond, we know he'd make some shit up about the water cooler, but not you. Nope. You are the original "stealth employee." [This does apply to those SAHM and SAHDs, by the way. No mention of housework, errands, dishwashing or shopping, or anyone delivering anything--that's forbidden. Only discuss your family and Very Close Friends.]
  8. Be happy all the time. EVERYTHING is fine. ALWAYS.
  9. Mention at least weekly the same "weird fact" about your life you think makes you super-duper special: your mis-matching eye colors, your twin brother who was a high school baseball star, your GPA in college, your dad's run for governor in 1982. But DO NOT mention anything interesting like your GPA was so high despite having mono twice, or that your twin brother works for MSF (Doctors Without Borders). Or, frankly, anything else anyone else has done. Stick to what we know already. Don't vary it too much or we might get lost.
  10. Remind us regularly that your kids are star athletes, get perfect grades, wear cool clothes, have awesome friends with whom they do unbelievable things, think about growing up to be superheroes or running Apple or the U.S., and always have a fabulous attitude about things. Because those of us with normal kids who are klutzy, dyslexic, too poor to buy fun clothes, don't make friends easily, and are just hoping to not get suspended from school tomorrow so forget far-distant adulthood feel like total losers. This is REALLY IMPORTANT. Never, ever, share frustrations or moments of even vaguely awkward parenting. Because you never have them.
  11. Always be sincere. And earnest. These are critical parts of your social media persona. When in doubt, pull out SMUG. That guarantees a win.
  12. Always talk about your husband's side job. Not the one that pays the mortgage, but the one you can participate in yourself and thus tell us about it. Endlessly.
  13. I can't think of another one. I'm too crabby from the first 12.
* I was actually prepared to post this ON Facebook when I realized that this is a much better place to rant. No one reading this that I know on Facebook does this so I'm hoping you won't be offended by it, whereas the people on Facebook who are self-aware enough to see themselves will get all pissy.

Things Starting with K
(continuing a series started in 2010 with A)
  1. Keys. I have a horrible habit of locking keys in cars, forgetting them in the house when I'm leaving, or otherwise mismanaging locking things. Fortunately, I now have a car with a code on the door, and I can get in my house without a key if necessary.
  2. Knickknacks. It is so hard to get rid of tsotchkes that have been picked up from memorable places, or given to me from special people. On the other hand, if I keep gifts around for a couple of years, that's usually sufficient time that I can unload the stuff I don't really like. I've finally trained myself to only buy practical things. And S&Ps, which are inherently impractical for me anymore.
  3. Kazoo. One of my favorite words to say. It's just silly and noisy and fun. Also, who can't play one?
  4. Knee. I have a stellar bruise on my leg around the knee from falling on top of Beast when he fell the other night. His laptop then fell on top of me. It was a super-fabulous way to spend 1:45 a.m.
  5. Knitting. I should get back to this. I haven't knitted for a decade. I need to find some help, but someday I'll finish that damned afghan!
  6. Kvetching. There are few ways to waste time more completely and uselessly than complaining. And yet we do spend an awful lot of time doing it.
  7. Khakis. Are they even still a thing?
  8. Kitchen. My kitchen needs a complete deep-cleaning, the kind where you bring in the shovels to clear things. And then I can wipe down the counter and mop the floor and feel like one area of my house (and life) is totally under control.
  9. Kangaroo. Most awesome animal on earth. A friend was in Australia last fall. He went out for his morning jog and discovered he was being shadowed by a large kangaroo: thump ... thump ... thump. A bit weird, and hilarious.
  10. Keyboard. My new laptop has the extended keyboard with the number keys to the right. It's taking me some time to get used to, because the delete and other keys are set up differently from traditional keyboards. But I love the numberpad!!
  11. Kudzu. At my workplace, books are kudzu. They're just bloody EVERYWHERE!
  12. Kabob. Sounds yummy. We don't have anyplace nearby that serves proper kabob. Another reason I need to go back to England (or, apparently, Germany, according to Sparky).
  13. Kick. I'm having a weird nostalgic turn lately about playing kickball. I hated it when I was a kid, but for some reason I'm craving the concept of kicking something as far as possible.

  7. Nice try, dude, nice try. Bye.

  8. Nom Nom Nom

  9. I got it I got it .... you cheat!

  10. "I am so tir.... Are you filming this!?! OMG, I hate you!"

  11. Sure, dogs are the ones with limited intellect. Yeah. Just keep telling yourself that.

  12. "I was told there'd be pizza. I didn't expect to BE the pizza. Sad face."

  13. Weaponized derp-dog.

Thursday Thirteen

(Link in meme-roll)
Reasons I Like My Job*
  1. First and foremost, the people. I know it's easier to whine about the idiots, but there are way more interesting and fun people. I learn something from the patron almost every day. Some days it's behavioral, some days it's factual stuff.

  2. Solving a weird question. Yesterday I found a request for a CD that someone else had worked on without success. It turns out the patron had the [Spanish] title slightly wrong, and the "band" name meant "recorded live" (more or less) in Spanish. I found two or three possible recordings that might be the right one and I left it for someone to catch the patron--he's in the library almost every day--and ask him what he actually wanted.

  3. I get to help people who, in many cases, really need a kind and helpful person to get them through the day. Every librarian has stories about this. Yesterday, a woman came in to register for a rewards program for a local theater online. No computer skills. As it developed, that program requires an email address, which she didn't have. So we went to yahoo and signed her up as firstname.lastname @ yah00.c0m (i.e. jane.smith @ yah00.c0m). She had to get her ID out to enter the "last name" field correctly. I knew she'd never remember her email password so I wrote it on a slip of paper: "first.last @ yah00.c0m -- password" (not the actual one of course). When she went to fill out the theater form, she typed her email addy as "firstlast @ yah00.c0m" so I had to explain again that she needed to use HER first and last name with the dot. Of course, she'll be back and not know how to log in, so I told her to be sure to hang on to that piece of paper. She was really a nice person, just not very smart.

  4. Most of the people I work with are wonderful. Almost all of them are dedicated to making the library better and helping people. We get along pretty well together generally and, having worked together for a long time, we understand each other's foibles and tics. Like Maniac's regular swings from hyperactivity to relative normalcy.

  5. Kids. I get to see and talk to kids of all ages regularly. I like kids. A lot. But not in a creepy way. They just inspire the hell out of me without even trying at all. Like the dude who comes in often with his dad asking for books well above his age-level on various topics (dinosaurs, chemistry, rockets...) who has a trach tube and is occasionally hard to understand because his breathing is tricky.

  6. I like books. A lot.

  7. The hours are somewhat flexible. I get Wednesday mornings off, for instance. Then again, I work till 9 on Wednesdays, so there's that. But if I need time for a doctor's appointment or haircut, it's not (usually) a hassle.

  8. It's comfortable. Indoor plumbing, HVAC that (mostly) works. Some light lifting and carrying, but not the sort of thing that is generally dangerous or difficult.

  9. Every day is different. Right now I may be cleaning up vomit, but in ten minutes I may get to give a kid her first library card, and later on I may be having a good conversation about the local conservation area with someone who is thrilled to find out about it, and then talk to an older person about finding out where her grandfather's store was in town 80 years ago.

  10. I get to be smart for pay. But I don't have to learn DEEP details about too many things, which is good because I find trivia far more fun than study. ;-) Like how a siphon works: I don't care about the reason it works, but I can find you information how water is moved from one side of a mountain range to another.

  11. Cataloging, how I love thee! I love sorting out where to 'store' an item, how to make it findable in the catalog or the building, how to describe it so people can find it when they want/need it. I like the freedom within the rules that librarians have developed over time--and continue develop--even when I don't agree with them.

  12. I love the technical, repetitive, somewhat boring but also rhythmic tempo of moving newly-purchased items from delivery box through preparing them for patrons to use. The minutiae, the process, the organization....all that stuff is like air and food to me.

  13. I love the fact that at MPOW at least, we're fairly free in what we wear to work, what we can keep on and around our desks, and how we arrange the time we spend on projects. Of course, there's always the bigger schedule to keep in mind--who is at which service desk at what time--but in terms of overall time management, we get to decide if today is the day to order books or a day to cut buttons out for storytime or a day to create an Excel file for budgeting...or a day to post on Facebook (work-related stuff!!).
*I chose this topic because right now I'm so hacked off about work I actually took a sick day rather than plow through another day of being sick at work. There are some personality issues among the staff right now that I'm not enjoying. In fact, when I called the scheduling person to tell her I wouldn't be there today because of illness, she gave me a hard time. WhatEVer--that's WHY I'm not at work, because she's being a total bitch about stuff.

Things Starting with J
  1. Journal. I wish I could figure out my antipathy toward daily journaling. I'm just really lousy at it.

  2. Jeans. I need to go buy some new ones. Those I own are too small. :(

  3. Job. I'm in kind of a drought at work. There's a ton going on, and I feel like I'm going full-speed just trying to keep up, much less get a handle on things.

  4. Jackalope. I miss the West. And I think I had this very same picture in my room as a child.

  5. Joke. Yes, those are a joke. I believed in them for awhile when I was a kid, because my brother liked teasing me

  6. Junk. So much of it in my life. Ugh. Need to clean. Need to purge!

  7. Jeep. I have always wanted a Jeep, but I totally live in a stupid place to own one. I don't see that changing. Ever. And that's a drag. Oh, well, another dead childhood dream.

  8. Jalapeño. I used to always have poppers when we went to T0mmy's (a local fast food place), but I just recently discovered they also have deep-fried mac-n-cheese! Holy crap...!

  9. Jewelry. I think I will have to bite the bullet this summer and take all my rings to get them resized. My fingers are too fat already this spring to get them off (or back on) easily. The losing weight thing...hasn't been happening.

  10. Jammies. Still wearing my winter flannels. I've usually started substituting in lighter ones on warmer nights, but we haven't HAD any warm nights. The winds blowing a gale out there right now, in fact.

  11. Jonquil. Nor have I seen anything sprouting in my garden yet. At least I can SEE the garden now, though. The only place there's still now is the ditches.

  12. Jump. I'm very used to jumping up out of chairs (and plopping into them) rather abruptly, at work and elsewhere. This week, due to a bit of middle-of-the-night acrobatics on the stairs, I'm finding it quite difficult to move much faster than the average tortoise. Hopefully, I'll be able to jump around like a psychotic flea again by Monday or Tuesday.

  13. Jerk. There's been a surprising lack of them at the library this week. 'Course, I work this weekend, so there's still hope.

Shows I've Mindlessly Watched Recently
(more less in reverse chronological order)
  1. Cops -- because waching people act stupid while drunk or high never gets old, especially when I don't feel good
  2. M*A*S*H -- as preachy as this show got on the later episodes, they always looked like they were having a blast doing the show
  3. Dead Like Me -- Never watched this before this morning; may have to check it out from the library
  4. Criminal Minds -- I've seen a ton of episodes in totally random order and while I have the general timeline down it would probably be good to start at the beginning one of these days
  5. Today Show -- O . M . G . this show is vapid between 8:30 and 9!
  6. L&O:Criminal Minds -- Bobby annoys the shit out of me, and in general all the "boys" do; they girls have to be the grownups who tap dance around their idiotic-but-brilliant partners ... and I can't stop watching
  7. L&O:SVU -- Go, Mariska; kick some ass! I have a massive crush on this character
  8. Deadliest Catch -- Love this show, but it is a little repetitive; this week was boring-ish (can't believe I'm saying that about a show in which a literal ton of ice falls on someone's shoulder from two stories up!)
  9. Fast 'n Loud -- Beast adores this show, so I'm often held hostage by it and have come to at least tolerate The (Ridiculous) Beard
  10. Hardcore Pawn -- This is truly embarrassing to admit: I'm a complete junkie for this show. One of the people reminds me of a coworker, and the siblings couldn't be more TV-friendly-dysfunctional
  11. Without a Trace -- I haven't watched much of this one, but I enjoy it. It's thinkier than most of these shows
  12. Mythbusters -- A perennial favorite.
  13. NASCAR -- Great noise to sleep to, but lately, it's been an awful lot of Kyle Busch which sucks
