1. What’s the coolest item you’ve found at a garage sale, flea market, etc.?

It's been awhile since I've hit garage sales (and I never do flea markets, simply because there aren't that many around here). I can't think of anything super-special, though Sparky's main wardrobe supply was hand-me-downs from garages and thrift shops. I found some wonderful glass luncheon dishes at a resale shop over a decade ago, and we have a number of pieces of furniture from resale and "antique" shops. They aren't antiques; just old and cheap.

2. Describe how your day went yesterday.

I was up early to return a key that I mistakenly brought home from work. Then I hit Dollar General for odds and ends, came home and put those away while the load of laundry finished drying. Folded those things and packed up for a visit with Beast...and hit a wall. Took a nap, went over to Beast's for an hour or so (with donuts for the staff and coffee for him), came home, cooked up a steak I'd defrosted earlier in the week--and I'll be eating steak all week now, so there's that--did dishes, listened to some crime podcasts, noodled around online while I ate, looked over the bills and entered receipts, watched Live PD, went to bed.

3. Do you have issues with people entering your personal space? What do you do when your personal space is violated?

I have a fairly small circle of space around me, but once you cross it...yeah, I'll be backing up and doing the defensive/arms-crossed posture. I'm more likely to get myself in a roil because of emotional invasion, though: Friday at work one of our long-time patrons (whose got some issues, but is generally quite interesting to chat with) asked if I was going to be at the Big Do that evening in support of the library. It was a weird vibe, so thank God I could tell him no. I do not need drama in my life!

4. What is the one meal recipe you think you’ve mastered?

Macaroni and cheese NOT from a box! But I do a decent Thanksgiving spread, if I do say so myself.

5. If you could take back something you did to someone, what would it be?

I would have been nicer and less fearful of "status damage" when I was in school.

6. Would you describe yourself as spiritual, religious, or something else?

Seeing as how I literally couldn't force myself out the door to go to church this morning, dressed, packed and...nope... I think I'd better go with spiritual today. I haven't been in worship more than a couple of times since September, and every time I go I lose my shit and then people want to chat about Beast's "stuff" and I get overwhelmed and it takes me the rest of the day to regain some equilibrium. It's a combination of the music, being surrounded by people I love (who love me) and being a Natural Cryer at church even on good days. Fuck. I'm crying just writing about it.

7. Did you ever receive detention in school? What sort of kid were you in school – bookworm, smart kid, troublemaker, quiet … etc.

Had I ever been in detention, my childhood self is certain I'd have been hung from a spit at home and never made it to adulthood. In reality, it wasn't that bad, but it was easier to just roll along being a brainiac bookwormy smart-ass.

8. When’s the last time you ran a mile? How often do you exercise?

A mile??!? That would be, uhm, probably 27 years, before I got pregnant. I don't run. I ran as a kid, and loved it, but I hate sweating with glasses on.

9. What would you say to your 16-year-old self, and why?

"Get over yourself, girl! You are NOT the center of the universe, but you do get to make decisions for yourself! And, jeez, just ask W. (or J.!) out and see what happens, for cryin' out loud!"

10. What are you avoiding?

Piles of bills (which I can't pay till I call my online banking helpline). Piles of tax info (which I can't really do anything about till I talk to my CPA). Piles of boxes (a lot of which are Beast's family stuff, so I can't touch those). Piles of laundry. Piles of phone calls to make: bank, CPA, Wells Fargo, car donation place (but I need to get the year, model and mileage figured out first), insurance company, county clerk's office (for absentee ballot for Beast), SSA, ... endless, really. Which is why it's so hard to even get started.

11. Describe a “Hah! I told you so” moment you had recently.

Every damn day looking at the U.S. Government. Which is why I have backed far off news reports except in the very broadest sense.

12. What’s more important, where you live or what you do for a living? Why?

The most important thing is doing what needs doing. Bloom where you're planted and all that. I mean, if you hate your life, either move/change it, OR adjust. It doesn't pay to be miserable forever.

13. Swear words: Are you pro or con? Why?

Fuckin PRO! I grew up in a household where we couldn't even say "pee" or "Jeez" or "butt" without a smoldering look from Mom. It was ridiculous.

14. Paper or plastic? Do you prefer to pack your own groceries?

I bring my own bags if it's doable. Otherwise, I don't care. I used to say paper, but apparently the production and recycling of those is actually worse than that of plastic, so... I don't know.

15. Do you have a shoe fetish? How often do you buy new shoes? Do you ever get rid of a pair of shoes?

I get rid of shoes when they break or totally wear out. I try to stay out of shoe stores because it's so hard to not Buy Them All. I have to be super-focused.

A Quiz for Grown-Ups

1. What bill do you hate paying the most?

Here are the ones that are currently on the chopping block: part of DirecTV (the premium channels), SiriusXM, some subscriptions on Beast's Nook, and I just need to renegotiate our cell plan.

2. What do you really want to be doing right now?

WANT: napping. NEED: gathering paperwork for taxes, financial purposes, and Medicaid application.

3. Why did you choose the shirt you have on now?

It was on the top of the pile in the closet.

4. Thoughts on gas prices?

This is something I just don't dwell on. I'm glad I'm buying less than I was for most of September-December.

5. First thought when the alarm goes off in the morning

".....nooooooooo..."

6. Last thought you have before you go to sleep?

I have no idea, I'm usually asleep by then.

7. Do you miss being a child?

I miss it pretty much daily at this point.

8. What errand/chore do you despise the most?

See #2 under NEED. Man, my relationship with money is pretty much totally fucked up.

9. Up early or sleep in?

I love sunrises, but seeing them means going to be before I leave work in parts of the year. Which isn't practical, right? So I'll sleep in when I can.

10. Favorite lunch meat?

Bologna. I'm low-rent.

11. What do you get every time at Trader Joe’s?

I've never been in a Trader Joe's. See answer just above.

12. Beach or lake?

Don't, uh, lakes have beaches? Because...well, yeah. I'd rather be in the mountains, all the same.

13. Ever crashed your vehicle?

Yup. I strongly recommend against it.

14. Strangest place you've brushed your teeth?

I seem to remember brushing in a lake or river as a kid once. Also, with fizzy bottled water in St. Petersburg, because the water there is beyond scary.

15. Somewhere you've never been but want to go?

Africa, specifically Botswana, Egypt, Kenya, Namibia.

16. At this point in your life would you want to start a new career?

Hell no! That doesn't mean I won't be, but I'm not in for anymore giant changes.

17. Do you own your own house?

Well, I pay on the mortgage every month, so not really.

18. Do you have a go-to person?

Not so much, not anymore.

19. Are you where you want to be in life?

Oh, you crack me up. ... Not.

20. Growing up, what were your favorite cartoons?

I didn't watch cartoons much, and when I did it was mostly the Warner Bros. or Hanna-Barbera shorts.

21. What has changed since you were a child?

Almost everything.

22. Looking back at high school, were they the best years of your life?

Absolutely not! Hell to the no, no way, uh-uh.

23. Are there times you still feel like a kid?

I feel ignorant fairly often, but rarely in a childlike way.

I didn't. Beast did.

1. What was the last item you returned or exchanged at a store?

   I can't even tell you when I would have done this. I literally NEVER do this, especially at brick-and-mortar stores; too much hassle. I think I have sent stuff back that was mail-ordered, though. Just nothing recent.

2. When did you last leave the house and then turn right back around and go back inside?

   I'm sure it was this week sometime. I do this all the time. My mother used to tell me I'd go off without my head screwed on if it weren't attached.

3. What’s the latest you’ve ever returned a library book?

   Months. And yes, I work in a library, so I seriously have NO EXCUSE! 😏

4. What location among places you’ve traveled would you most like to see again?

   I would love to go back to Ydra. I'd move to Ouray in a hot minute if I could. I would like to see Russia in summertime.

5. What’s an unlikely movie sequel you’d like to see?

   I think we've had enough sequels. I'd like something original.

I pretty much never ask year-end questions at year’s end, but I like these. So let’s do it. I love year-end reflection!

1. Who made you laugh most in 2017?

   Most often, I'm sure it was Beast. Most deeply, I have to kind of give this to the podcasts I've found in the last few months: The Dollop and My Favorite Murder, among others.

2. What’s something you learned or discovered in 2017?

   How to listen to podcasts (thank you, Spotify); how to 'listen' to my phone in the car (see "podcasts). More importantly, I got a big smackdown on thinking I have any of the big stuff in life under anything close to control.

3. In what way was 2017 better than 2016?

   I quite honestly cannot think of even one improvement, personal or national, this year. It's been hell.

4. What was your most pleasing purchase in 2017?

   About the only thing we've bought of value this year was medical care. I have a couple of new articles of clothing that I like, but I can't think of anything important and life-changing other than medical stuff. OK, I was pretty impressed with myself for buying, loading, and using water-softener salt all alone. 🙌

5. When in 2017 were you pleasantly surprised?

   I have unbelievably amazing friends. I mean, I knew this, but the settling out of who's reliable and who isn't there is interesting, and mostly positive.

Sparky still works on his college campus (technically, that's my college campus too), so when I visited him at work last month, I guess that was it.

Bigger. But then I am, overall, bigger than the national average.

Hmm. Chinese on Christmas Eve (before or after church depending on the timing) and then opening one gift under the tree and going to bed, followed by waking up the next morning and opening the rest while the Christmas Candle burns.

I loathe pumpkin pie. I will probably whirl around the living room at some point; it's a thing that happens. And I will carol but not until Christmas Eve.

Five questions inspired by the new Greta Gerwig film Lady Bird, which I recommend.

1. What was moving out of your parents’ home like?

   After I graduated from college, I went home for about three weeks, packed up my life (??) and when I left in June it was to get married. It was weird, looking back from here.

2. What makes popular kids in high school popular, and how were you like or unlike them?

   I don't have a clue where the "popular" comes from. It seems to be some combination of looks, smarts (not necessarily academics), and protection of some kind. I was not in the cool crowd.

3. When you were in high school, where in the neighborhood did schoolmates hang out?

   In my neighborhood, there were no other kids. Seriously, two blocks in either direction there were a grand total of 10 people under 20. However, we had a local mall that was at that time the biggest in the world (yay us) and most kids hung out there.

4. What was learning to drive like?

   My dad was pretty good about it. Mom was psycho. My driver's ed teacher was creepy and useless. I didn't get my license till about 6 months after I turned 16.

5. What were your most difficult and least difficult subjects in high school?

   I intentionally didn't take hard science classes, because those would have been hard. Otherwise, gym was probably my worst class. I was good in literally every other class, really enjoyed myself.

I have never used PayPal. That's rather shocking, I guess.

9) Random Question: After a long, exhausting day of travel, you check into a motel. The room is not at all to your liking. It's next to the ice machine, so you can hear cubes dropping noisily into metal buckets. Your view is of the parking lot. The bathtowels and thin and tiny. In short, you feel like you're being ripped off. Do you grab your bag, turn on your heel and check out, hoping there are better accommodations nearby? Or do you say, "What the hell, it's only one night," and climb into bed?

Depends on how tired I am and if the bathroom is clean. If I'm beat...I'll probably just crash and then leave a rude note online. If the bathroom is scummy though, I'm definitely out. Dirty bathroom, buggy bed, bye-bye.

I've been humping stuff in and out of various medical facilities pretty much daily--this last one, I'm bringing in clothes and schlepping them back home to wash every day. Thank God our water is free.

It is eminently possible if Beast can't figure out stairs but is otherwise able to come home.

I've been addicted to Jack the Ripper since sophomore/junior year of high school. I've done two term papers on him and that era/place in history.

Not particularly. I can't swim, so....

8) Actress Angelina Jolie was born in 1975. People magazine once named her "most beautiful." Who is the most beautiful woman you can think of?

That I know personally? I work with a couple of striking women. I can't think of anyone I think who stops traffic or anything...

9) Random question: A wizard offers you a choice -- would you like your life to stay as it is right now (in terms of your health, your career, your relationships and your finances) for the next 5 years, or would you like to take a chance that the future will be brighter?

Helping Beast in the bathroom this afternoon. This is what the nurses are paid for. Most of the rest of the stuff that goes on there, I'm willing to help with. Not that, though.

2) Two years later, Aretha recorded "Son of a Preacher Man." What's something you changed your mind about?

I've been doing a lot of back-and-forth about Beast coming home.

3) This song tells the tale of Billy Ray, a young man who could be very persuasive. If we wanted to change your mind about something, would you be more easily swayed by an emotional argument, or with verifiable facts?

I would be unlikely to be swayed by someone trying to change my mind at all. I don't do well with being told what to do.

4) If you ordered a "Son of a Preacher Man" in a bar, you'd get a cocktail made with peppermint schnapps, gin and lemonade. When did you last have lemonade? Was it just lemonade, or was it spiked with alcohol?

Good gawd that sounds AWFUL! I can't even think of a time I've had lemonade in the past 6 months. It's not really my thing, but it would have been just lemonade.

5) Dusty had a thing for maps. She admired them artistically and enjoyed using them to take long car trips. Do you use printed maps? Or do you rely on technology, like GPS or Google Maps?

I almost exclusively use the GPS in my car, and look at Google Maps ahead of time.

6) As a girl, she attended convent school. There, one of the nuns discouraged Dusty from performing, telling her that if she would do better to be a mother or a librarian. When you were growing up, did the adults in your world encourage your dreams?

Nope. Which is ridiculous, actually, considering that I come from a long line of women who worked for pay.

7) That nun inspired Dusty's first major act of rebellion. In an attempt to make herself look less like a future librarian or housewife, she bleached her hair platinum blonde. In school, were you much of a rebel? Or did you conform to the expectations adults had of you?

Oh, I was quiet and relatively well-behaved in school. But remember those striking-looking women? One of them has several tats, wears 6" heels and short skirts, dyes her hair in random colorful streaks....and is a librarian. So, hey nun, fuck right off.

8) Early in her career, Dusty provided the entertainment at a family summer camp. She appeared on the bill with a clown, a fire-eater and a hypnotist. Have you ever been hypnotized?

Nope. Hell to the no, not in public for sure!!

9) Random question: Have you ever played matchmaker to your friends? If yes, did your efforts lead to romance?

I have, to spectacularly zero effect. Setting up two non-communicative people is just stupid.

Consumption

1. What is your paper towel consumption like?

   I'm trying to remember the last time I tore one off the roll at home. It's been awhile. Beast uses 'em far more often than I do. Mostly I use them to clean various small things that would ruin a dishcloth, i.e. polishing the copper cooking pots. I do use them at work to dry my hands when I wash up.

2. What condiment do you use most often?

   We've been eating a lot of brats lately; the mustard's been getting a workout.

3. What is your sticky note consumption like?

   I'm so cheap that it actually pains me to "waste" these, so I'm pretty careful. On the other hand, I leave processing notes at work in books or things that need extra labeling or something I notice while I'm cataloging. And shopping lists are often on sticky notes. That way they don't fall out of my phone case on the way into the store.

4. What’s your coin jar setup?

   I, personally, don't have a coin jar. All my money is in my wallet. Beast leaves change all over the bloody house. I've done this a couple of different ways in the past. In 2009 I just picked one letter. in 2014, I got a series of five letters and answered each question with all five letters. We're probably going to church. After that, I don't know. I probably should do some serious house-cleaning, but let's be realistic: I'm not going to do it.

Silver.

3) This song is from Rumours, which has sold 40 million copies. Is it in your collection?

Nope. When it was popular, I was (I think) too young to understand its appeal. I like most of the songs just fine now, though. They bring back great memories.

4) It was written by keyboardist and vocalist Christine McVie. She was born Christine Perfect, a name that earned her a fair share of teasing when she was a school girl. Do you recall being teased in school? What about?

I got teased for wearing glasses and being a nerd and "too nice." And, a little, for my name, but there isn't anything really awful people can do with it--it wasn't till I was an adult that someone told me it is quite similar to a foreign word meaning "death" or "murder." That was a fun day at work. ;-)

5) Before Fleetwood Mac, she was in a band called Chicken Shack. If you were to order out for a chicken dinner, which restaurant would you turn to?

I'd probably hit the grocery store. We hadn't ever picked up from one of the locals here, but last month I did and it was surprisingly good. However, the people working there lived right down to their usual standard of snarkiness, and I got felt-up (OK, hugged, but he's not someone I had EVER met before!) by a creepy guy who insisted on discussing who got the "last breast." Beast will be picking up anything there in the future.

6) Before she could pay all her bills with her music, she supported herself as a window dresser for a London department store. Do you enjoy walking along, just window shopping? Or do you consider "looking with no intention to buy" a waste of time?

I do not like to window shop. I like to get in, get out, and get home.

Pay off the house.

When you listen to music from your phone, MP3 player or iPod, do you use ear buds or headphones?

I, uh, rarely use anything but CD players and Spotify (on computer) to listen. It makes me nervous not being able to hear what's going on around me when I'm walking or working out. At work, I'm plugged into my computer with earbuds.

9) Random question: Let's pretend your high school reunion is coming up. Which classmate are you more curious about: the one who was your first date, or the one who was too cool to give you the time of day?

I've no interest in seeing my first date, but he's in a different class year from me. And judging by my attendance at the only reunion I've attended, the cool kids are still idiots and drama queens. So, I'd just hang out with whoever was fun and interesting and not an asshole. Pretty much like high school itself. [I am actually Facebook friends with someone I once had a massive crush on--he is a classic case of "thank God I came to my senses!"]

Don’t Go There

1. Where were you forbidden (or too frightened) to go when you were growing up, and why?

   I was a huge scaredy-cat when I was little, so there were a lot of places I wouldn't go alone. I can't think of anything specific, though. And I don't recall my parents telling me not to go anywhere. I had to stay within sight or shouting distance of the house, and I was supposed to stay out of the garbage collection area in the alley behind the house (but I didn't want to be there anyway!); at that point it was still an incinerator. My dad reworked it later to make a little trashcan shelter thingy. I suppose I was told to stay out of my brother's room at some point, but again, why would I want to be there? Yuck!

2. What’s the naughtiest thing you’ve done in the past couple of years?

   I can't think of anything horrible except being a right bitch at work and swearing at my boss on a regular basis for much of 2015.

3. Under what circumstances have you gone into a place you knew you weren’t supposed to enter?

   I've used the men's room in public places before because the line into the women's room was 80 miles long. Nbd--gather a crowd, take turns as "security" (to warn unsuspecting guys) and practically no one notices.

4. Which aisle in your supermarket do you just about never go down?

   I hate going down the laundry/cleaning/soap aisles. It just stinks. And I almost never enter the cereal/candy aisle because we don't eat cereal very often.

5. Not counting traffic situations, when did you last willfully disobey something you read on a sign?

   I go slightly over the speed limit every single day. However, I think I'm going to be ignoring the Road Closed signs near our house to see how the intersection reroute is coming along. I'll do it Sunday morning, probably--it's on the way to church--and they will not be working on Sundays this early in construction season.

Memorial Day is the federal holiday designated to honor American service people who died in battle. Though our song choice is humorous, we honor their sacrifice in our hearts.

1) Memorial Day was introduced after the Civil War. War memorials, as well as the graves of veterans, are to be decorated with flags and flowers on this day to show our appreciation. Is there a war memorial in your neighborhood?

Nope. There are a lot of flags flying though. Ours will be out tomorrow and Monday.

2) Andrew Johnson, our 17th President, was in office the first time Memorial Day (then called Decoration Day) was celebrated. Have you ever met one of our 45 Presidents?

No. And I kind of hope I never have to at this point. I'd love (LOVE!) to meet Michelle Obama, though.

3) According to the AAA, 36 million Americans will hit the road this weekend and drive more than 50 miles. Will you be traveling far from home this weekend?

Not at all. We have church tomorrow, maybe a movie, probably dinner out, then just hanging out on Monday then 1100 miles of racing. Monday we'll do the movie and dinner out.

4) Memorial Day kicks off the summer season. What's your favorite picnic food?

I love my mom's potato salad. Can't buy it anywhere. She used red potatoes, onions, mustard, mayo and some other stuff that I can't quite figure out.

5) Have you packed away your winter clothes? Or is the weather still so changeable that you still may need something warm?

In this state you don't really pack them away so much as push them back where they are retrievable when the temperatures hit 40 in July. Last summer, August felt like October. ETA: I have put away my winter shoes: No More Boots! Hello Toesies!!

6) As you answer these questions, is there an air conditioner or fan on?

Nope. It's only about 65 degrees out. Front door is open. I need to go up and open some windows and do some cleaning/dusting before Sparky arrives.

7) This week, we are featuring the Muppets. Jim Henson made the first Muppet out of an old coat, and he used ping pong balls for the eyes. Do you have a talent for do-it-yourself/arts and crafts projects?

I do NOT. I am reasonably good at "finagling" to make things work but not at creativity.

8) Random question: Think of the last thing you bought. Did you get a good deal?

The last thing I bought was gas. And, it being Memorial Day weekend, the price was higher than usual. Oh well.... I was down to 20 miles on the tank, so needs must.

Malfunction Junction

1. When have you had a wardrobe malfunction?

   Of late, most of my wardrobe issues have involved spilling food down my front. Maybe I should stop eating in the car?

2. When did you last have a problem with your alarm clock?

   The only problem I have with my alarm clock, i.e. phone, is when I forget to set it.

3. What was your most recent computer problem, and what was the fix?

   The usual: reboot and voilà!

4. What’s something about cars you know specifically because you had to have one repaired?

   Brake shoes make a horrible sound when they are worn out. I'm not going to explain how I know this, except that it was Dad's car and I had to drive on that set of squeaky shoes to pick up Mom from the airport because Dad was busy having a heart attack.

5. Have you had any brain malfunctions this week?

   Oh of course. Every day. I forgot graham crackers at the store earlier, for instance.

I would if it meant the chance to extend my life or decrease pain. I'm beginning to think I should research some trials on back/neck/shoulder surgery for Beast. He is really in rough shape.

Yes. Though I might hedge it by saying it doesn't look well-made or it's too pricey or something. Unless she asked specifically, "How do I look, really?" I can't lie that baldly.

Not over-nights, no. When I started at my current workplace, I worked 6-9 three nights a week, which gave Beast and me about 15 minutes crossover, at most, from his return from work and my departure. Then, when he started to commute by train for 3 hours a day (round-trip), it was a "trade the kid at the train station" period, and he'd be asleep when I got home at 9:15. I also worked occasional Sundays and alternate Saturdays during this time so it was a little dicey seeing each other.

2) She promises that if he takes the day off, she'll make it feel like a vacation. Have you traveled anywhere fun so far this year? Do you have any leisure trips planned for 2017?3) The ladies of Fifth Harmony are enthusiastic supporters of the Girl Scouts, rewarding troops who excel in fundraising activities with free concerts. I love the Samoas. And I really like the vanilla Oreos (or knockoffs).

I took a carton and some bags of old clothes to a local place last fall, and then went shopping since it turned out to be half-price day. They give a coupon to everyone who donates, so I really hit the jackpot.

5) Do you ever shop second-hand or thrift stores?

More and more. I need to get some new spring/summer tops.

6) Fifth Harmony member Normani Kordei competes on Dancing with the Stars this season. Would you do better on DWTS or The Voice? In other words, are you a better singer or dancer?

I have never had a single dance lesson, but I have sung in choirs and elsewhere, so I'd probably do better on latter show. But I would never do either!

I have an interesting mix of church-related (not MY church though) stuff and shopping stuff and a pen!s-enlargement ad. The top tagline is "Coming Soon to an Indie Theater Near You" though, which is extremely random. I literally NEVER check anything here, unless I'm bored and looking for a giggle.

I also keep a folder of stuff that came to be instead of someone else. I have that kind of an email, that people screw up regularly. The most recent one there is tagged "Confirmed singers for Gig on 3/23" (discussion about a music service at church--not mine--including this priceless part, cut/pasted: "ladies, long floor link black gowns, stockings, or Knee high's, closed in shoes with pearls"). THAT is mighty specific!

1. The first quarter of 2017 is now behind us. How has it been?

   LONG!! Holy crap, this year is just creeping by. I'm pretty sure it's a combination of living with an invalid, having a crazy-child running our country, and worrying about everything....it's wiping me out.

2. How has this past quarter of your life been surprisingly good?

   Uhm. It really hasn't been. It's a nice night, birds are singing, I'm watching Emergency on TV (not the 70s drama, this is a reality show from Canada). It's kind of fun listening to the accents.

3. When did you last drop quarters into a vending machine?

   I can't even remember. We have coin kiosks at work for making copies (etc.) so I use--and definitely HEAR--them all the time.

4. How do you feel about your state’s twenty-five-cent coin? If you’re not in the U.S., which of the coins do you think is especially striking?

   I had to Google it since I haven't paid the slightest attention to all of the hullabaloo about them. It's got the state's Favorite Son on it, the skyline for our biggest city, and some farm buildings. Whee.

5. Google’s corporate headquarters is called the Googleplex. What would be a good name for the corporate headquarters of your life?

   Messy, dusty, untidy, chaotic. Sorry, I don't have any creative way of phrasing that.

1. What makes you unreasonably irritated?

   Stupidity. Man, everyone was irritating me today: other drivers, a couple of regular patrons that are incredibly needy (and stupid), office staff at the doctor's office.... It was just an irritating day.

2. What are you unreasonably particular about?

   Having facts to support a point of view. If you just "believe" it, that's fine, but it doesn't mean the rest of us have to "believe" it on your say-so. Bring me some data, or go to hell. [Though, to be honest, I don't think this is at all unreasonable....]

3. What’s something that’s unreasonably complicated?

   Disability sign-up. Beast's application was submitted 3 months ago. It's still "pending."

4. What are the best reasons for working in your field?

   I get to do something I think is important to society--literacy, reading, exploring, fact-finding, providing access to all of the above--and get paid a decent wage for it. I work with great people, and every day is different.

5. What are some good reasons for the most recent silly purchase you made?

   I was hungry for something sweet, watching Beast eat his M&Ms. So I went and bought junk food. I suck.

1. What do you like on your frozen yogurt?

   I don't eat frozen yogurt very often. Maybe I should get some today. And I'd be most likely to eat it plain.

   We had the greatest sweet polenta on the cruise. I've been craving that ever since. Otherwise, I'm not a fan.

I went to the Soviet Union on a dare in college. I was terrified the the whole flight overseas--I'd been overseas, it was the destination--but I can't tell you how glad I am now that I forced myself.

Humor, hard work / attention to detail, kindness.

5) She met her close friend and fellow teen star Annette Funicello when they were 12 and attended the same Catechism class. What do you recall from your middle-school years?

Being embarrassed every day about ridiculous things. I do remember my math teacher making me keep my hand up in the air for like 10 minutes after I colored the whole palm black with a Magic Marker. The other sort of timely thing is that I had a crush on a guy named Larry when I was in 8th grade (he was a year ahead). I am friends on Facebook with him--really barely acquaintances IRL--and he posted for the first time in months today. Because he just got released from jail. So ... dodged a bullet there maybe?

6) After The Donna Reed Show, Shelly went on to a recurring role on One Day at a Time and was twice nominated for an Emmy for her work on Coach. Her husband is Mike Farrell, who played BJ on M*A*S*H. Which of those four sitcoms would you enjoy binge watching?

I don't really like binging--I get bored after a couple of shows because really they're all the same (with some notable exceptions). Having said that, I'd sit through a few hours of ODAAT or MASH any time!

7) In 1962, the year this song was popular, is also the year Jack Nicklaus began his successful pro golf career. Do you enjoy playing golf? Watching it on TV?

We watch golf, because Beast loves it. I wouldn't ever choose it for myself. I think I'd enjoy playing golf if I were any good, but I'm too competitive to deal with all the randomness and luck of the game.

8) A 2013 study said most Americans will have 12 romantic relationships in their lifetime. Does this mean you've had more or less than your share?

Less. Although how does one define a "romantic relationship" anyway?

9) It's closing time at the mall and you find yourself accidentally locked in a toy store. You call the police and they say someone will be there in about half an hour to rescue you. While you wait, will you play with any toys? (If so, which ones?)

Of course, but seriously: a half hour? Why call? I'll just play all night, sleep with some of the teddies, play with the Lego and board games, and hang out in the bathroom around opening time till it's safe to leave. I promise; I wouldn't even steal anything!!

1) In this song, Mariah pledges to "have faith in all you do." Have you recently given someone support or a pep talk?

I do this regularly at work: "You can do this; it's not as hard as it sounds." is a common refrain with people online for the first time. Yes, there are still people who don't 'do' computers! Coworkers, same, though the topic is usually more along the lines of "stand up for yourself!" since I work with a lot of people like me who are terminally co-dependent. And of course Beast needs lots of validation post-surgery; he can't use his left arm for much, and his back is still FUBAR, as is his shoulder. He feels like a drain on resources (his view, not mine), but he's really doing pretty well considering the level of pain he's experiencing all day.

2) Mariah was at the center of a controversy in Times Square on New Year's Eve when she had audio problems and claimed she could not perform. Times Square is at the busy intersection of Broadway and 7th Avenue. If we went to the busy intersection nearest your home, what would we find? (A store? A church? McDonald's?)

The nearest actually busy intersection to my house is just 2 farm fields, a house and a horse farm. The busiest intersection in the city where I work is probably the one with Walgreen's, McD's, a gas station and a strip mall on the corners.

3) Her nickname in high school was Mirage because she cut school so often. Did you ever play hookey?

I can literally remember every single time I ditched out of school. Both were in college.

4) Mariah doesn't apologize for spoiling her dogs, who have been known to travel by limo. Do you know anyone who treats his/her pets like people?

I try to assume that all my pet-loving friends are perfectly normal. But there is one friend that I'm pretty sure is clinically insane about her dog. ;-)

5) Mariah has something to fall back on. She studied cosmetology and worked as a hair sweeper in a salon. When you get your hair cut, do you socialize with the stylist?

A "hair sweeper" is an actual job title? Wow, I have skills I had no idea I had! My hair person is a friend, so yeah. She and I have been discussing for years life as wives of alcoholics. Her husband died--at 45ish--last year from that. Mine is still around, so far.

6) When married to her first husband, Mariah went vegetarian. Tell us about last night's dinner. Would it qualify as a vegetarian meal?

Nope. I had leftover KFC chicken and biscuits.

My favorite MJ song is "Man in the Mirror" so alone. However, I also really enjoy "ABC" with the whole gang.

Necessity at Aldi's Thursday after work. I don't shop for fun. {{shudder}} Unless you count Amazon Subscribe and Save which I did this morning, but again that was things like laundry detergent and toilet paper.

And I love this place most of all. We try to get there every time we are in Vegas because it reminds me so much of home. If I could live anywhere, that would be on the top 10 list. To answer the actual question: I find nature beautiful in small and large ways almost daily.

I've had a lot of people, including Beast, tell me they don't know how I deal with "home life" right now over the past year or so. Is that praise? I don't really live for praise, though it's nice when it happens.

Kangaroos. I haven't ever been there, so what can I say in my defense?

OMG--I have am a totally office-supply whore! Pens! Paper! Calendars! It's an out-of-body experience for me in those stores.

8) In 1980, the NASA space probe returned the first photos of Saturn back to earth. Do you believe intelligent life forms from other planets are trying to learn more about us?

I think there is intelligent life besides us in the universe. I don't think they have the slightest interest in us.

1) This song is about a new day. Here we are celebrating a new year. What do you hope for in 2017?

I hope for our leadership to start acting like leaders, but I'm not optimistic. I hope that Beast will find a job, or at least an income stream so we stop the monthly hemorrhage of money that's been happening. I hope women's rights and the access to insurance won't be decimated, but that's not looking too likely either. I hope for fewer shooting victims and hate crimes, but I know that's not going to happen. Realistically, I hope I can make a positive difference in some people's lives, and maybe do some growing up this year.

2) Ms. Dion has said this song was influenced by the events of 9/11, and how a new day dawned after tragedy. Looking back on 2016, did something happen that you're glad to leave behind and move away from?

Only everything relating to Beast's health. But again, I'm pretty sure that some of the consequences of last year's illness(es) will be with us for a long time to come.

3) In the video, Celine serenades us from billowy white clouds. Describe the sky where you are as you answer these 9 questions.

BRIGHT sunny blue. Not a cloud anywhere in sight. The current air temperature is 15.7 degrees on our porch. I'm sure it's breezy enough to bring that down to feeling like a frigid single-digit temp. I'm in for the day.

4) This video was shot in West Palm Beach, FL. When settlers arrived in the late 1870s, the town was called Lake Worth County. OK, your turn. Tell us something about your hometown.

The place where I currently make my home is a "village" mixed in with a conglomeration of unincorporated stand-alone subdivisions, each with their own associations and rules, that somehow connect to each other through an organized grid of roads so that it looks like a proper town. It is the most insane arrangement for local government I've ever heard of!

5) Celine Dion's native tongue is French. Dites-nous quelque chose en Français.

I don't do French. Though I get the general idea of what you want me to do, the best I can give you is "Frère Jacques, dormez-vous? Sonnez les matines: din din don." I know a few other songs in French, and "Où est le WC?"

6) Celine's mother, Therese, is known in her Quebec neighborhood as a terrific cook. Think about your own domestic talents. Where do you excel? (Food prep, house cleaning, laundry, scheduling, etc.)

Uhm. Looking around the house right now, you would probably say "none of the above" but in general I do OK with all of it at this point in life. I don't excel at any of it, however.

7) Growing up, Celine and her siblings often performed in her family's piano bar. Where did you most recently enjoy an adult beverage?

The last drink I had was while Beast was away last month: blueberry vodka with Sprite over ice. Here at home. Or maybe I skipped the Sprite and ice and finished the bottle neat.

8) In 2002, when this song was popular, Kmart was in the news because the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. What department store to you shop at most often?

I spread my money around. I hit Meijer for some things, F&F for some things, and Kohl's for most of the remainder. And smaller stores, quite often locals.

9) Random question: It's time for a midnight snack and you have your choice of one of these three -- a slice of sausage pizza, a bagel with lox and cream cheese, or a piece of carrot cake. Which will you have? And what shall we bring you to drink?

Of those three, the only thing I'll be eating is the pizza and with pizza I gotta have some pop, so diet whatever'll work. Given my own choice, I'm more likely to snag a couple of crackers and wash them down with water in the middle of the night however. Pizza at midnight means I'll be awake at least once before the alarm goes off.

1) Black is this week's signature color because Friday, November 25, was "Black Friday," when retailers cut their prices and consumers flock to the stores. Did you score any "Black Friday" bargains?

Hell no! i worked yesterday. Had I not worked, I would have been right here at home all day.

2) Feasting and football are also popular Thanksgiving weekend pastimes. Do your Thursday-Sunday plans include pigging out or watching a game?

Did both on Thursday. All the games were teams I didn't care about at all. I will probably do more eating today and tomorrow, but I think I'm footballed out. Sparky and I may go to a movie this afternoon.

3) At Thanksgiving dinners, Crazy Sam's homemade gravy is always a hit. (Probably because she's so generous with the cognac, which gives the gravy a nutty taste.) What was particularly delicious at your Thanksgiving table?

Our turkey always turns out well. The mashed potatoes generally turn out well, and we make plenty.

4) Among the biggest the Black Friday advertisers are Target, Kohl's, Macy's and Best Buy. If you could have a $100 gift card to any one of those stores, which would you choose?

Probably Kohl's. I am tired of my clothes.

5) This week's song, "Baby's in Black," is about a girl who wears black because she's in mourning. Do you find that the color you're wearing reflects your mood?

Not particularly. I mean, certain articles make me feel better but it's not the color it's the associations I have with them.

6) The woman who inspired this song, Astrid Kirchherr, has been friends with Paul McCartney since he and his bandmates (John Lennon, George Harrison, Stu Sutcliffe and Pete Best) met her in Hamburg back in 1960. Tell us what you believe are the components of a strong, lasting friendship.

Honesty, patience, space, humor, and kindness.

7) In the early days of the Beatles, Paul McCartney and John Lennon began writing a play but abandoned it. Do you have a novel, painting, play, song or poem that you're going to finish "someday?"

I haven't even started my great American novel!

8) When he was 16, George Harrison dreamed of moving to Canada, Australia or Malta. In just a few years, he would visit all those places with Beatles and eventually decided there was no place like home and stayed in England. Have you ever thought about moving to another country? If so, where?

I have occasionally wanted a place to escape to, but as I age, I prefer to stay near enough home. I just would like a bolthole.

1. What’s the tourist attraction nearest you that most people from other places are aware of?

   Uhm. Nearest is probably either a train museum or a clock museum. Or a lake and resort community. I'm not giving anything else away since I'd like to stay fairly hidden.

2. What’s a tourist attraction you’ve visited that was better than you expected?

   I really loved Little Bighorn Battlefield. I had no expectations for it to be much of anything, but it hit me really hard for some reason. It's the one place in this country that commemorates the original people taking back their land from thieves, even if only for a short time.
   Also, quite honestly, the cities of Irkutsk and St. Petersburg were surprisingly lovely though very different.

3. What’s a tourist attraction you’ve visited that was disappointing?

   I don't think I ever need to go back to Yellowstone. Too many people about 50% of whom are morons.

4. What’s a tourist attraction you’re still hoping to visit?

   The Pyramids of Giza. Closer to home, Cahokia Mounds.

5. Excluding restaurants, what tourist attraction you’ve visited had the best food and the best gift shop?

   The British Museum has good both. I'm kind of drawing a blank on anything in this country unfortunately. OH! Lincoln's home in Salem, IL, has good food for sale (syrup, etc.) in their rather tiny gift shop. Lots of good other stuff too.
