Hold On (1990)

1) This song gives encouragement to someone who is enduring heartache. Have you more recently given support, or received it?

There's been a lot of receiving of late. It's not a place I'm very comfortable living in. 

2) "Hold On" is featured prominently in the 2011 movie Bridesmaids. It's an anthem for the friends in the film and they love to sing it together. Is there a song that reminds you of good times with a good friend?

One that reminds me of college, and one specific college friend, is "Safety Dance." It's a terminally silly song, with great memories around concerts and campus radio sets, that makes me smile every damn time I hear it. 

3) The video for this song finds Wilson Phillips outdoors on a snowy mountainside and then on a sandy beach. What's the view outside your window?

Cloudy skies, green trees and the eave of the house next door is all I can see from my recliner. 

4) The mountain segments were filmed in California's San Gabriel Mountains. The girls were flown to the set by helicopter. Have you ever been in a helicopter?

I would LOVE to have a long helicopter ride around some scenic area just for the experience. The only person I know of close to me who's been in a helicopter is Beast and that was Flight for Life. This is NOT how I wish to travel!

5) The members of Wilson Phillips are authentic "California Girls." Wendy and Carnie Wilson's father is Brian Wilson, who wrote the Beach Boys hit[s]. Chynna Phillips is the daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas, who sang "California Dreamin'." Have you been to California? If yes, where did you visit?

I've been to Cali several times, mostly to cities--San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles--but I loved the ocean in each of those areas. 

6) Another generation of the Wilson family has entered the music business. Carnie's daughter/Brian Wilson's granddaughter, Lola Bonfiglio, participated in the current season of American Idol. Has a family member followed you in your chosen profession?

Heh. I followed my sister into Library Science. My niece followed me into it. We all (have) had good long careers in a field that is wholly worthwhile and rewarding (when it isn't wholly frustrating and infuriating).

7) In 1990, when this song was popular, satellite radio was in its infancy and streaming was unheard of. Our cars gave us a choice of AM/FM and maybe CD player/tape deck. When you're driving and a favorite song comes on, are you more likely to sing along if you're alone? Or don't you care if anyone hears you?

I rarely listen to music in the car anymore. I have a ginormous backlog of podcast episodes I'm trying to get through. I do talk back to them regularly, and sometimes pause the whole thing to argue about something, but not when/where people can see me. If I do have music on I sing along rather mindlessly, whether or not others are around. I don't care if anyone else hears or sees me. I don't mind being the crazy old lady in town. 

8) Also in 1990, actor Alan Hale Jr. died. He was "the skipper" on Gilligan's Island. Without looking it up, can you name the other six castaways? (If not the actors, then their characters.)

Gilligan, the millionaire and his wife, the movie star, the professor and Mary Ann. I don't know all the actors' names, but man I loved that show as a kid. 

9) Random question: What superhero would you like to have as your best friend?

Deadpool seems fun, if rather dangerous, to hang out with. [I don't see most superhero movies, so that's all I can come up with...]

Too Shy (1983)

1) This song laments vulnerability and self-consciousness in a social settings. Are you often "too shy?" Or are social gatherings easy for you?

I am terminally shy, but adept at snapping on my Public Mask in a flash and smiling and schmoozing through a (short) party or meeting. Also, I'm unable to abide silence in social settings so I talk too much.  

2) In the lyrics, a girl self-censors, telling herself, "hush hush." Have you more recently shushed someone, or were you shushed?

As a librarian.... ha ha ha. I get shushed by patrons more than I shush them. Then again, most of my public service work is in the children's room, so it's pretty loud in there. I did get shushed yesterday at work by a little girl who wanted us to whisper about the snake puppet she said had bitten her, and which then bit me. 😀 

3) Band member Nick Beggs recalls that they called themselves Kajagoogoo because it sounded like something that would make a baby laugh. It is fun to say. Can you think of another word that you just enjoy saying?

"Shenanigans."  Also, "boooolllshiiiitttt." 

4) This was the only US hit for the British band, earning Kajagoogoo the title "One Hit Wonder." Can you think of another artist or band who had one really popular song and then just kind of disappeared?

Well, I seem to be calling out "Safety Dance" a lot this week, so I'll hit them up again.

5) Though fame was fleeting here, Kajagoogoo remained popular in England. Lead singer Limahl recalls the adulation as "overwhelming," and he was shocked when he stepped on stage in Cornwall to see row after row of fans wearing their hair like he did. Have you ever handed a photo to a stylist and said, "Make my hair look like this?"

I don't think I've done precisely this, but I did have a "Lady Di" haircut as a late teen, and I'm sure I've said other things to hairdressers over the years about hairstyles I thought would work with my hair. 

6) In 1983, when this song was popular, the Lotus 1-2-3 program made it easier for PC users to make spreadsheets. Are you answering these questions on a Mac or PC? Laptop, phone or tablet?

I'm on a Lenovo laptop. I've never used a Mac except when strictly necessary, and phones/tablets have too small of a keyboard for me to properly type.

7) 1983 saw Abbey Road Studios open their doors for the first time for public tours. During the first two months, 22,000 tickets were sold to fans who wanted to see where the Beatles made their magic. What's the last ticket you purchased?

I can honestly say that I haven't purchased tickets for ANYthing in years. Maybe parking in a hospital lot, but honestly even then I think it was just a pass-through not an actual ticket.  

8) Also in 1983, McDonald's introduced Chicken McNuggets. When was chicken most recently on the menu at your home? How was it prepared?

At home? I have a container of rotisserie chicken shreds I nosh on for dinner once in awhile. I had chicken strips from some fastfood place this week for lunch, maybe even McDonalds. I eat a lot of chicken. Or peanut butter. Those are my main protein sources. 

9) Random question: Have you ever forgotten where you left your car in a parking lot?

I forgot which lot I parked in AT WORK on Wednesday this week! This isn't an uncommon occurrence. I'm the flakiest person on staff, hands-down.

Happy Holidays! (from the archives)

1. [...] Sam loved giving her annual wish list to Santa. Yet some children are reluctant to climb into Jolly Old St. Nick's lap. Did you enjoy the tradition or were you shy? Or did you by pass it altogether -- either because you wrote him a letter or because your family didn't celebrate Christmas?

I only remember visiting Santa one time. I'm sure I was shy and terrified about it, but it was the first year the Big Mall opened, so it was a Big Deal.

2. Are you currently on the Naughty or Nice list? How did you get there?

Everyone thinks I'm on the Nice list. I guess I am, but I'm sure making some questionable decisions on the daily. Oh well. Doing what I can, I guess.

3. Did you ship any gifts to friends and family this year? If so, which one traveled the farthest?

I send my usual packets of Christmas ornaments to the great-nieces and -nephews, including the two sets that go to England.

4. Did you buy yourself a gift this year?

I did. I bought myself a shirt (I think?) with all the other presents, and a new winter coat today.

5. What's your favorite holiday-themed movie? Have you seen it yet this year?

I'm not at all into this tradition. I haven't seen any Christmas shows this year (movies or TV shows), nor have I heard much music except at church. I'm ok with that--this year wasn't one I want to remember or have stand out (more than it's going to).

6. Thinking of movies, Christmas is lucrative for Hollywood. Have you ever gone to a movie theater on Christmas Day?

Yes. I was going to do so again this year, but Sparky and I went on Xmas Eve to see the latest Star Wars movie. Maybe I'll go see something this weekend too, maybe the Hugh Jackman movie. I'm dealing with the beginning of a cold today, so we'll see how I feel over the weekend about going out in Arctic temperatures.

7. Have you ever suffered an embarrassing moment at the company Christmas party?

I embarrass myself on a pretty regular basis at parties, mostly without having even a whiff of alcohol. And I haven't been to a proper Christmas party in years.

8. What's your favorite beverage in cold weather?

Hot black tea, preferably Earl Grey or English Breakfast.

9. Share a memory from last Christmas.

This is last year's swag. It's currently stacked pretty much in this same order on the dining room table, where it's been sitting for 12 months. Does that explain my life this year? Pretty much.

This year, most of my gifts were food from friends, one shirt and a Not-Yet-Published book from Sparky, and yeah, that's about it.

Homecoming
A few questions inspired by Spider-Man: Homecoming. As always, I tried to write the questions so that you needn’t have seen the movie to answer the questions however you wish.

1. What’s the crime like in your neighborhood?

We are pretty much limited to (illegal-in-this-state) fireworks and kids taking money out of unlocked cars. Some speeding, some loud partying. Our county has a map of sex offenders, and we are surrounded, but not directly in this neighborhood. Three hundred yards away, the houses are tiny and cheap and far from schools.

2. If you could have attended one of those high schools with a specific academic focus, such as performing arts, studio arts, sustainability, science and technology, international languages and diplomacy, or some option you thought of yourself, which would you have chosen when you were thirteen?

I wouldn't have. My parents, rather, wouldn't have. We're big believers in well-rounded education in my family.

3. What was memorable about a party you remember from high school?

I can count on one hand the number of parties I went to in high school. They were all memorable for different reasons, but none of them were mad raves or crazy drink-fests.

4. Which of your older relatives is (or was) the handsomest or prettiest?

My crazy brother-in-law (Jan) was startlingly good-looking till he hit about 50, and since then has dropped right off that chart 100%. My second nephew Don used to look a lot like Brando did in his youth. The rest of us just look like people you see everywhere. I was accosted at the baseball game last weekend by someone asking how things were going with me, etc., who then realized I wasn't "Lauren" or whoever from St. John's Lutheran Church in [town in a state where I don't currently live]. It's quite weird when this happens.

5. What was homecoming like at your high school? How did you feel about it?

I didn't go. I wasn't dating anyone at that time, I felt (feel) strongly that holding onto--or getting into--a relationship just for Homecoming is not the person I want(ed) to be.

Around the House

Bedroom: what’s your sleep schedule?

I sleep whenever I can. I'm usually in bed by 9 or 10 and reading or puzzling for awhile. Wake-up time varies between 5:30 and 7:30 depending on the day--although yesterday I slept past noon!!--and I try to get a nap on weekends. Not yesterday, though.

Kitchen: favorite comfort food?

Sweets. I'm not fussy, but I'm also on the verge of being told to totally cut them out.

Washroom: showers or baths? bubbles? bath bombs?

My daily schedule involves a shower upon waking up most mornings, but I like to get a bath periodically just because they are relaxing and I can shave my legs easier. And I use either bubbles or bath salts, whatever I grab first.

Closet: sum up your style in a few words.

"Is it comfortable? Does it have pockets?"

Parlor: favorite party or board game?

I really do like the game of Life. And I've loved every single game I've played of Cards Against Humanity, including the one we played at a staff meeting at work. THAT was super-eye-opening.

Living room: what do you like to do with your family?

Talk. We're heavily into talking, mostly over each other, all at the same time, and getting irritated because no one is listening. Otherwise, we do well wherever you put us, to be honest. We're nothing if not adaptable.* Oh, and we like to eat.

Dining room: favorite special occasion food?

I make a good Thanksgiving spread.

Garden: favorite tree? flower?

My favorite tree...hmm, either aspen or blue spruce, I guess. My favorite flower is heirloom roses, the kind that smell.

Attic: what’s one thing you have a sentimental attachment to and you will never throw away?

I would assume the obvious wedding ring answer, but otherwise there are just too many "favorite things" and while I would hate to do it, I know it's quite likely I will have to do so someday.

Library: favorite book genre?

Mysteries. I used to turn up my nose at romances, but I'm about to start on a tear of those having had just about enough bad news on my plate for far too long.

Office: if you could have any job in the world, what would it be?

The one I have is pretty damned excellent!

Guest room: have you been to a sleepover? if so, when was your first? do you like them?

I'm female: of course I had slumber parties as a child and teen. My first? I was probably 10 or so, but don't remember details. They were just part of weekends and vacations and so forth, a 'thing' that has continued well into my adulthood. My last one was at Amy's over a year ago; I spent the weekend at her house. Lovely!

Foyer: do you like small gatherings, large parties, or one-on-one meetings?

I hate large crowds. Smaller groups or one-on-one is far preferred.

Pantry: favorite meal to make?

Mac n cheese, I guess. I really don't enjoy cooking that much.

Laundry: favorite and least favorite chore?

I don't mind cleaning bathrooms or doing dishes or general cleanup, but I absolutely LOATHE floors! Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming--I hate it all. And guess what's on my schedule today? Yep, all three.

Garage: favorite mode of transportation? favorite car?

I love riding trains. I'm not a train nut, but there's something about going slow enough to see people's backyards and farm fields but fast enough to move along and NOT have to do the driving.... I'm acutely envious that Beast gets to take the commuter train into the Big City on Wednesday without me. Closer to home, I'd love a Jeep Cherokee, but my Ford Edge is fine too.

Panic room: what was the most nerve-wracking experience you’ve had?

Parenting. You don't know for sure you've done things right until at least 20 years after the fact.

Powder room: do you wear makeup? if so, what one item can’t you live without? what’s your favorite look?

The only "make up" I wear is Chapstick. I can't have stuff around my eyes because of allergies, and my rosacea means putting stuff on my cheeks and nose is just begging for a giant breakout. Also, I'm lazy, and usually don't want to take the time to futz in the morning.

The Shipwreck Questions

1. If you were shipwrecked with friends (whether in real life or virtual life or both) think about it and pick some friends and tell us why...

   I would be eminently unlikely to be shipwrecked having been on a ship precisely once (for an extended period). BUT in the interest of saying who I would mind being trapped for a significant period of time with: Beast (cuz I like him and he knows stuff), Librarian M (she knows a lot about a lot of sensible things like what to eat and not eat, plus she's fun to talk to), Amy (she'd have books with her), Jet (he'd have a gun with him), Sparky (cuz I like him, he knows stuff, and he has a strong back), and Tech S. at work (because I've never seen her freak out, she can make clothes, and is sensible). This reminds me of doing "Values Clarification" in high school....

2. Who would throw the wildest parties, and why did you pick them?

   I don't really know anyone who throws wild parties. Sorry. I'm too old for that shit.

3. Who would always fall asleep on the couch, and why did you pick them?

   Beast, me, or Sparky. We've done a lot of couch-napping in the past three weeks, all of us.

4. Who would enter to be in a talent show, and why did you pick them?

   Annie, because the girl's got pipes.

5. Who would try to get out of doing their chores and why did you pick them?

   Me. Because I do that so regularly it's not at all funny.

6. Who would accidentally set the kitchen on fire whilst cooking and why did you stupidly pick them?

   I don't think I know anyone this incompetent. Maybe one of my nephews--James or Don--but since they're in their 40s and share a house with each other, by now they've surely learned to make food, right?

7. Who would try to domesticate an island pet and why did you pick them?

   Double pick: Librarians A & C because they are ALL ABOUT animals. Also, my niece Katherine since she's a vet.

8. Who would make the other carry their bags on a shopping spree and why did you pick them?

   Sparky, because he's used to carrying mine. Normally, I would say Beast, but he's in no shape to be carrying anything at all.

9. Who would throw the first person of[f] the boat and why did you pick them?

   Hmm. Can I have my brother do this? He's good at pissing people off--maybe the other person will just jump.

10. Who would be the best caregiver when someone got sick & why did you pick them?

    Guess that would be Julie, who is a nurse and nursing supervisor.

11. Who would try to force the another to play sports with them & why did you pick them?

    Todd. No contest. He's always messing around doing something sports-related: golf, softball, football, soccer....

12. Who would have the best holiday ideas for your space on the island and why did you pick them?

    Carolyn because she's constantly over-compensating in areas like this, and she's literally the only person I know who would carry through doing this regardless of what anyone else is doing.

13. Who would need to clean out someone others stuff to make room for their own & why did you pick them?

    Whoever jumped overboard to avoid my brother won't be needing any space, but I'm not sure would be good at packing up their stuff. Maybe Librarian T? She would just get on with it.

14. Who worries about how they will look when they’re older & why did you pick them?

    My sister Marie because it's all she talks about these days.

15. Flashes everyone when they walk by after taking a shower alone & why did you pick them?

    Marie's husband Jan, because given any encouragement whatsoever he'd totally be doing this IRL. He's such a fucktard.

16. Who wakes you to asks weird questions in the middle of the night & why did you pick them?

    Oh goodie, I get to include Rachel, without whom this meme wouldn't be complete. She and Annie would conspire to do this, as they have done in the past. :D

    I don't think I know anyone who does this, except me. Maybe Gail?

18. Which of your friends on this island might being too touchy-feely while you interact, why did you pick them?

    Aside from Jan? There are some patrons who verge on creepiness, but otherwise I don't think there is anyone I hang out with that's any more touchy-feely than I'm comfortable with. Because I probably wouldn't hang out with them then, eh?

I probably was really scared. I only remember standing in line one time for Santa, and I probably wigged out, but I do remember sitting on his lap for about 3 seconds and getting a candy cane at the end of the ordeal. I was probably 6 or 7 at most when that happened.

2. Are you currently on the Naughty or Nice list? How did you get there?

I suppose I'm on the Nice list. I usually am, though I've had my years of edging towards Naughty. I'm never very bad though. Even when I was hardest on myself, I wasn't that bad.

3. Did you ship any gifts to friends and family this year? If so, which one traveled the farthest?

I shipped three packages on Monday. I suck. The overseas one may not make it, but they aren't getting together as a family till next week anyway.

4. Did you buy yourself a gift this year?

Not ... exactly ...? Kinda? I mean, I bought (too many) Hallmark Trek ornaments in ?June? when they hit the market this year. I missed the later additions though, since their release hit at the same time the money dried up. That's probably about all Beast and I are "getting" this year. Since last year's haven't even been unboxed downstairs, though, it's almost like we have two years to look at if we get around to putting them out/up next week.

5. What's your favorite holiday-themed movie?

I don't like movies because of their holiday associations per se. We went and saw Collateral Beauty this week which has lots of Christmas setting-stuff, but it wasn't "about" Christmas. Good movie though. Bring Kleenex.

6. Thinking of movies, Christmas is lucrative for Hollywood. Have you ever gone to a movie theater on Christmas Day?

Yes I have. And I think we're doing it again tomorrow. We saw Little Women back in '94 on Christmas, probably at least a couple since then, and tomorrow is Star Wars Rogue One day for us. It's our reward for behaving at my niece's house tomorrow afternoon.

7. Have you ever suffered an embarrassing moment at the company Christmas party?

Nope. I save my embarrassing moments for family get-togethers.

8. What's your favorite beverage in cold weather?

Same as in warm weather: diet Dr. Pepper. I do like eggnog, but really, I can't drink very much: it's too rich.

9. Share a memory from last Christmas.

Beast had surgery a year ago and came home on Christmas Eve. It was a very low-key holiday, but definitely a good one.

1. Who should run for United States President in 2016?

I'm fine with Hillary. It's time, she's due. And as for the Repugs, well, they certainly have got what they "paid" for: divisiveness and hatred and low-wattage "intellect."

2. Have you ever gone to a party and snooped in the medicine cabinet?

I believe I have, once. Only once because it made me feel icky, so I've never done it again. Of course, this doesn't count if I'm actually looking for something I need, like toilet paper.

3. Why are Happy Meals happy?

Because they know they're going to kill you eventually.

4. Have you ever done the Hokey Pokey?

Uh, yeah, a few times. It was, literally, the only dance my dad knew how to do.

5. What song sticks in your head and drives you crazy?

I've got nothing stuck there now, which is nice. Often it's a random song I heard at work on Spotify, or (when I used the radio as an alarm clock) the song that woke me up. Katy Perry gets stuck too often, and P!nk. And hymns: most recently "Amazing Grace."

6. Do you dance like a lunatic around the house when no one is looking?

...I've been known to do this, yes. I grew up doing this in my living room, actually: put on a record and perform the whole thing in front of the living room window. Did I think no one could see in??

7. Have you ever been involved in a food fight?

I've been present for one. I don't think I participated in it. The mere thought of food on my clothes and in my hair makes me a little ill to be honest.

1) In Jamaica, "jamming" means to celebrate. What's going on in your life today that's worth celebrating?

Hmm. We went to a "Celebration of Life" service this morning for a 22-year-old. I don't care what you call it--it's hard to not cry when someone dies that young. Otherwise, we're celebrating being all together as a family for about a day--but sitting in the living room together on our individual electronic devices and ignoring each other. 😳

2) The group that became famous as "The Wailers" originally called themselves "The Teenagers." What was trendy when you were a teenager (clothes, music, etc.)?

Tight pants on men, lots of hair on everyone with LOTS of hairspray, (not where I lived, but ...) punk music, the beginning of skinny ties, and Laura Ashley. Oh, and how could I forget: Gunne Sax!!

3) Bunny Wailer and Bob Marley were very close. In addition to being bandmates, they were friends in elementary school and later became family (Bunny's dad and Bob's mom had a daughter together). Who has known you the longest?

Outside of my family members, that would be Laura; we met when we were in Kindergarten. That would be 47ish years. And since I'm Facebook friends with her brothers and mom--them too, by sorta-definition. But neither of us married into the other's family. That seems kind of...icky.

4) Does the person you named in #3, the one who's known you longest, know you best?

Not so much anymore. Which is fine. But she still knows a LOT of my secrets, whether she remembers any of them or not. We can literally say a word on Facebook and know the other one will laugh LOUDLY when she reads it. One of them is "ruthless." hee

5) Bandmate Peter Tosh became an avid unicycle rider. What's your favorite form of exercise?

I hate sweating. Right now, breathing makes me sweat--I'm not sure if there's something wrong with me or it's really that humid even inside with the a/c on. So I'm not exercising at all. When it's bearable, about the only thing I do hate is either walking or basic stretching: Pilates or yoga.

6) Bob Marley was known for his signature dreadlocks. When were you last in a stylist’s chair?

I think it's been about 2 weeks. Hang on, I'll look ... July 15th.

7) Marley's charisma is credited for popularizing reggae music the world over. Are you a fan?

I love good reggae. But I also have about a half-hour time limit for nonstop reggae; after that I need a break with something else. Like a palate cleaner when tasting wine. I like ska and reggaeton too.

8) Mr. Marley is one of the highest-earning dead celebrities, and manufacturers pay his estate to use his likeness to sell their merchandise. What dead celebrity have you seen recently on a t-shirt, mug, poster, etc.?

Does Leonard Nimoy as Spock count? If so, this morning on a T-shirt Sparky brought home. If not....uh...I can't think of anyone.

9) Random question: Have you ever had your palm read?

Not professionally. I went through a period of obsessing about learning this when I was younger. I have a 1/4" break in my life line about halfway down it. I've always wondered what that meant. Now that I'm fairly certain I've passed my halfway point....I still don't know!!

1) Crazy Sam's mother is terrified of alligators. Just looking at a photo of one of those scaly reptiles gives her the creeps. Is there a member of the animal kingdom that scares you?

I'm not a huge fan of bugs bigger than my hand. I'm fine with regular-sized Midwestern USA critters, but I draw the line at anything I can't cover with one smack.

Also, earwigs. ...shudder...

2) Gators are carnivores, but they aren't picky. If meat isn't handy, they'll munch on fruit. Are you particular about your diet? For example, do you try to eat gluten free, low sodium, etc.?

Nope. I'm trying to cut back on sugar, but not having universal success.

3) In Spain, this song was a hit under the title, "Hasta Luego, Cocodrilo." Say something else in Spanish.

2) "Rose" became a popular name in the 19th century, when parents also began naming their daughters "Iris," "Violet," "Daisy" and "Lily." Do you know anyone who has a flower name?

My niece, mentioned above, is named a variation of this very name. It's a lovely name, and totally doesn't fit her, even at 30+. As a young teen she tried going with "Roz" which is better, but it didn't stick. Her sister has a middle name based on another name for "Daisy", named for her (other side of family) grandmother. I know a couple of other "Rosies" and it sees like I might know a "Lily" or something similar, but I'm drawing a blank.

3) This week's artist, Seal, has something to fall back on. At his parents' insistence, before he pursued music he got an associate degree in architecture from a small college in Westminster. What's the last grade you completed?

I have a Master's Degree: MLIS.

Why Do You Want To Know That Meme, part three

50. What do you spend most of your money on?

I'm fairly certain that the biggest single chunk is housing, followed closely by food. I used to be really careful about shopping grocery store sales, and buying generic and waiting for things to go on sale. I sure as hell don't do that anymore, though mostly out of laziness. I do coupon shop with online coupons at the store I intend to shop on a given day, but we are rather brand-loyal on some things (like pop, which is a staple in this house).

51. Would you rather visit the past or the future?

Future! OK, yes, it would be lovely to see my parents pre-wrinkles and white hair. It would be weird to see my grandparents when they were young. But I really do want to know what happens to all these babies in my family in about 40 years!

52. Favorite clothing store?

I don't enjoy clothes shopping anymore. When I was a young, skinny thing, I really did, but now that nothing really fits right...it's depressing. So, I get my clothes in passing when I notice something I like, or when I need something specific, at Kohl's, F&F, Target, WallyWorld...wherever.

53. What is the best advice you can give to those who are feeling down?

Get some sunlight. Eat some veggies and fruit. Sing a silly song. Take a nap. Be gentle with yourself. Cry when necessary. See a doctor if you can't pull it together. Dance like no one is watching. Plan a vacation. Play with a happy child. Pray. Meditate. Do something kind for someone else. Do some writing or drawing or puzzles of some kind. Read a book. Whatever has made your soul sing in the past, try that again. Breathe, just for five minutes. Then another five.

54. How often do you think about your future? Does it scare you?

No. I worry about some stuff in the immediate future, but not about the Big Picture Future. I know I can't force things to be different, so I work on controlling my reaction when things go to hell. For instance, in the past couple of months, two kids I know have been dealing with some terrifying health issues (one had an aneurysm leading to a stroke at age 14, the other is a newborn with (pre-)cancerous tissue and organs that aren't working right as a result). I can't fix either of those issues. I can only do practical things to help support the families and pray (a.k.a. rage at God) like a crazy person, and keep my own footing stable. I suck at that last part especially.

55. What angers you the most?

Sick kids ranks right up there. It's totally NOT OK when kids have horrible medical problems. It's really NOTTTTT.
Also, intentional stupidity and meanness make me pretty unhappy.

56. When was the last time you got majorly angry?

December 23, when I told my idiot brother-in-law that if he EVER touched me again after I asked him to stop, I was going to punch him in the face. Been wanting to say that for about 45 years, so don't feel at all guilty. It will be interesting to see how things go the next time we're in the same room together. [and no, nothing seriously creepy--he was touching my arm last month--has been going on for 45 years, but he just doesn't respect boundaries at all]

57. When was the last time you got really sad?

I try not to go there. I seem to carry "sad" with me; it's always in stock at the der Katzenhaus. If I let myself think about stuff going on, I'd be prostrate in a rubber room. I'm sad about Ben's death. I'm sad that Beast is still having some (minor) recovery issues, I'm sad for Sparky's girlfriend's medical issues, I'm sad about the two kids I mentioned above, I'm sad about the homeless folks in the library all the time now, I'm sad for all the people whose lives are miserable through no direct cause of their own, I'm sad for people who make craptastic choices that ruin their lives....see why I don't dwell. I had a big wave of it threaten to overwhelm me yesterday while reading an email about this sick baby. It's really no fair at all for this family to have to go through this shit; they've already dealt with a ton of health stuff. No fair no fair no fair. ...and now I'm crying. Great.

58. Are you good at lying?

Ironic that I was driving home just about an hour ago thinking how much I miss playing poker because it's really a game of sanctioned lying--and I'm very good at that part. ;-)

59. What foreign language would you like to learn?

Hebrew. Or ancient Greek.

60. How many languages can you speak and what are they?

I got English down, most days. Some Spanish--I understand better than I speak. Pig Latin? Ubbi-Dubbi? Dewey? MARC?

61. How often do you go to parties? If you don’t, what do you do instead?

I loathe parties. I'll go, I'll even end up having a decent time usually, but they exhaust me.

62. What books do you plan to read this year?

My GoodReads goal is set at 100 again. I snuck past that last year, so it's doable. In 2014, somehow I read 126, and in 1996 I hit 173, but that includes what I was reading to Sparky, and it's probably way the hell higher than that for most of his early years. We got 15-20 books at the library every couple of weeks, and figure another 60 (at least) books of my own, that's a LOT of books under my eyeballs, usually more than once through.

63. Do you have breakfast every morning?

I do.

64. Tell us a secret.

It's only a secret because at this point I haven't needed to tell anyone, but I'm done with teaching Sunday School after this year. I started doing this when I was 13ish, so nearly 40 years ago. It hasn't been 40 years straight, but easily 25 years over time. I like kids a ton--duh!--but I'm tired. I'd like to get back to "grown-up" Sunday School, too.

65. How many concerts have you been to?

Honestly? I was in band for 7 years of my educational career. My siblings were involved in music, my parents had Symphony season tickets when I was a kid, we were subscribers to a piano series for a couple of years awhile back....I've probably been to hundreds of concerts over my lifetime. If we're just talking rock music, then less than 15; I'd say less than 10, but that might be a lie.

Beast.

68. Baths or showers?

I love a good soak in the tub, especially a very hot soak on a cold day, when I can drain and refill with more hot water a few times. But showers for everyday.

I am not, nor have I ever been, anything approaching ambitious. I like to work hard, but it's not out of ambition. Just hate being bored.

Several thousand dollars. This buying and selling of houses causes checks of ridiculous amounts to be flipped back and forth quite regularly. In actual cash-money-bills: maybe $500? I don't know. Back in the old days when you couldn't use credit cards overseas, I had lots of money in traveler's checks for some of those trips overseas.

Christmas Questions Meme

1. Have you been naughty or nice this year?

I've been nicer this year than I have in many years past. Well, I've been less badly-behaved, trying to keep myself on the straight and narrow. Which means I've gained about 30 lbs. Oh well.

2. What do you want most for Christmas?

Beast home from the hospital and nerve-pain-free.

3. What is your favorite Christmas movie?

I don't really have one. We usually watch Bill Murray's Scrooged at some point, and A Christmas Story. That's about all I can stomach.

4. How many Christmas cards do you normally send out?

Zeeee rowww.

5. Do you still get a stocking?

Yup. Although they are still packed this year, along with everything else including the tree.

6. What is your favorite Christmas song?

"Joy to the World" always reminds me of my dad singing the tenor descant.

7. What is your favorite Christmas tv special?

I've a soft spot in my heart for Rudolph, but I don't watch it because it's irritatingly SLOW.

8. What is your favorite way to wrap gifts?

In a bag with some tissue paper.... :-)

9. What do you look forward to most at Christmas?

Relaxing, thinking about the churchy stuff, doing the traditions, seeing family.

10. What did you do for Christmas this year?

Well, we haven't hit it yet...so...the plan is that we're taking Beast in for surgery Wednesday; he should be coming home Thursday. His attendance at Christmas Eve services this year is unlikely. I may go, with Sparky, to the late service if we get home in time, assuming everything works out. As I was typing this he told me he's not sure he can wrap my stocking-stuffer gifts because of his arm/hand being numb--which isn't unexpected, and I don't really mind of course. It's going to be a weird holiday. Between him on Wednesday, my niece expecting to give birth to twins any second now, and my great-nephew (different niece's baby) going in overnight for tests and maybe surgery, this is becoming The Year of Hospitals for the family.

11. Who do you want to kiss under the mistletoe?

Beast. Not that we have any mistletoe.

12. What kind of Christmas tree do you have?

It's fake, and still in the box.

13. Did you take part in a Secret Santa?

Nope. Thank God--I suck at this! I did set aside a White Elephant for the work party, though, which we ended up not doing, and I missed the party anyway.

14. Did you go to any Christmas parties?

Nope. Well, ok, yes, I did go to our chapter's P.E.O. Auction/Christmas Party. And dropped a ton of money again. For a worthy cause.

15. How early do you wake up on Christmas morning?

Now that we don't have any reason to check on the Santa situation, we just get up whenever. Usually by 8 or so.

In and Out

1. When did you last allow someone into your home to fix something or install something?

We had someone come re-do our dining room and living room from where the master bath overflowed--long story--last February. That was the summer project, once the insurance money came through. The plan for the fall was to look at replacing kitchen counter tops, but then Beast's back/shoulder thing started, so we're in a holding pattern on the kitchen. Meanwhile, I think the floor will need replacing in the kitchen too by the time we get around to the project; the seam in one area has split.

2. Not counting holiday parties, when did you last attend a party or gathering with a stated theme, and what was that theme?

Hmm. I don't really "do" theme parties. In fact, I'm not even attending my job's Christmas party this year because it's an Ugly Sweater thing and I'm NOT buying something ugly to wear on purpose.

3. When you were in high school, what were most often your reasons for being on campus after hours?

Band. Of course. Or at least music-related activities.

4. What’s something nobody offers for home delivery but should?

I don't know. Seems to me I can get just about anything delivered to me via Amazon and UPS. And services--yeah. Well, it WOULD be nice if doctors made house-calls these days....

5. In what public space this weekend are you most likely to run into someone you know, not counting the spaces you always see them (at work or at church, for example)

Grocery shopping is the go-to, but I actually ran into 5 people from various parts of my life at Panera on Wednesday, so perhaps there. ;-)

Shout Out The Answer Meme

Do you shout out the answers at the TV while watching quiz shows?

Only if I'm alone. I've discovered how annoying it is when someone does that while you're trying to watch (and figure out the answers).

Do you get over-involved with TV or movie plots at times?

Define "over-involved." lol
I've dreamed about TV shows. And yes, I do find myself pondering the show--or rather the characters--at odd times at work or while doing chores.

What's the highest hill or mountain you've ever climbed?

I grew up in the mountains of Colorado. While I never "climbed a mountain" in the sense of people doing Everest, I've been up my share of 12,000-foot+ high peaks. And rooted around the sides of several of those for fun too. From bottom to top in one go, that would be Big Squaw Mountain with my mother-in-law, Beast, and his brother in about 1988.

Do you have a piggy bank?

I do. One of these days I'll take a picture of it so I can post it. I love that bank!

What's the fastest you've ever traveled in a car?

TOO fast. I was in a car going close to 100 mph in traffic probably 20 years ago. It was exhilarating and stupid as hell.

Could you ever hand milk a cow?

Probably not. I suspect whichever cow got stuck with me would be pretty irritated pretty quickly, and I'd probably get smacked with a hoof or two. Also, I don't think my hands would hold up long enough. Yay, RSI.

Which was your favorite science? Biology, Physics or Chemistry?

Bio, once we got past cells. I hated the always-too-lengthy focus on cells, but systems, oh yeah! Loved muscles, skeletons, even nerves and digestive systems! OK, not a fan of all the stomach enzymes, but otherwise......SO COOL!

Have you ever had a surprise party? (that was an actual surprise)

I had two surprise baby showers before Sparky was born! Clearly, my brain wasn't working very well that both times I was 100% clueless. I threw a surprise graduation party for Beast when he got his MBA--at our house! He had no idea.

Have you ever warn clothing with the labels/tags still attached?

Nowadays, with the printed-on tags, I do it all the time. :-) And yes. Not too long ago, someone had to peel something off the back of my leg off of pants I was wearing for the first time. That was a little embarrassing.

Have you ever slipped on a banana skin?

Nope. I wonder where that comes from? Did people used to do that? Or was that a stand-in for all the piles of manure that used to litter streets prior to cars?

Are you scared of the dark?

Nope. I actually love darkness. I fully respect the power of darkness to mess with our senses, though. Ever been underground in a cave with no flashlight? Yeah. Awesome-scary.

Do you have a lawyer?

Hmmm. I know a fair number of attorneys, but I haven't paid any of them recently. We really need to go get our wills updated, though. Soon.

If you had a paid year off, what would you want to do?

Travel! I would love to do a world cruise.

How long did you[r] last phone call last?

...I can't even remember the last time I used a phone outside of work calls. My last work call, yesterday, was probably only a minute of actual phone time, with a period on hold in the middle. Personal call.....jeez, I think it's been over a week, when I call someone in Al-Anon about missing a meeting where I had meant to drop off boxes.

Have you ever helped someone across the road?

Yup. Everyone in my family is older than me, and many of them are or have been frail.

Have you ever been wolf whistled in public?

Ugh, thank God I'm old now!! I was first wolf-whistled while sitting on my front lawn when I was about 11. Who the FUCK does that?

1. What were your feelings the last time you stood on a scale?

   Well, they weren't happy. But I was at the doctor's so I was also a bit distracted by the nurse talking to me.

2. In what ways are you old schoool [sic]{hee}, and in what ways are you new school?

   I'm old school financially and in some respects spiritually and morally. I'm into new technology and like trying new things. I try to weigh things on their merits not on their history.

3. What big event is coming down the pike for you?

   My son is moving into his own apartment in two weeks. It probably is a bigger deal than it feels like. So much that I know that he doesn't know he needs to know....

4. In which social situations do you thrive, and in which do you flounder?

   I like social situations that involve word-play and intelligent conversation. I suck at social niceties and small talk and gossip.

5. When was the last time a fad hooked you?

   Oh, probably yesterday. This week. Recently. I'm kind of a sucker for fads. I can't think of what it would be, unless it's a new song or a phrase. I've been using What the Actual Fuck? a lot lately.

We'll probably do something on the 4th of July. Otherwise, nope, no summer birthdays.

I fell, as a child, when I tripped over a snagged string of carpet that lay over the threshold of the back door. When I landed, it was on the screw holding the threshold to the jamb and the top of the screw tore a 1/4" slice of skin off my knee and left it flapping by a small bit of skin. This was in the days when you slapped a bandaid on and kept moving, so no stitches, though it hurt like an actual bitch.

3) This song is about a lover who is, obviously, no good. Let's be more positive. Who is the nicest person you know?

There are some people at my church who are what I call "pathologically nice." I mean, they really ARE nice people, not faking it, but they're ALWAYS nice. It's lovely, and weird. ;-)

I'm not a huge fan of love songs. I do like "Fuckin' Perfect" and "The Sweetest Thing."

Nope. I suspect most of the time the whole ambulance ride is 'wasted' on the people who need it the most.

9) Known for hard partying in his youth, George is now in his 50s and says he's quite happy to spend his evenings eating takeout and watching DVDs. Are you doing any socializing this weekend?

I had a day-long women's retreat today, which was fun, and the weather was beautiful so being outside was delightful. Tomorrow is Confirmation Sunday, and then there's a party we're invited to for one of the kids afterwards. The first two weeks of May are crazy-busy for us this year.

You aren't a naturally social person, and all but the most low key scenes tend to overwhelm you. You like a more peaceful, quiet social environment. You enjoy one on one conversations. For you, no social group is two small. You're happy to hang out with a friend or two. You like to have true friendships and things in common with people. You aren't really into small talk.

This is going to be a long, and quiet, lunch if I can only ask one question. I'd probably blow it with "How are you today?" What I really want to know, however, is what he thinks of a Hillary/Michelle (or vice versa) ticket for 2016.

5. Which do you dislike most: pop-up ads or spam email?

Pop-ups. Though, since those have been effectively blocked on my computers and I still get the occasional spam email in various accounts...maybe spam. I just don't understand how spammers make money--who clicks on these things??

6. What was the best party you've ever been to?

Wow. Uh, there've been some really awesome staff Christmas parties in the past: which white elephant sucks the most? But I'm sort of partial to Beast's surprise party for finishing grad school. He was totally gobsmacked when he arrived--and it was our pastor at the time who kept him out of our house while things were set up.

7. Which is worse, being in a place that is too loud, or too quiet?

Too loud.

8. You are offered an envelope that you know contains $50. You are then told that you may either keep it or exchange it for another envelope that may contain $500 or may be empty. Do you keep the first envelope, or do you take your chances with the second?

Go big or go home: I'll be trading. After all, I'm no worse off than I was to start if the second envelope is empty.

9. Do you wish cellphone etiquette was a required class upon purchasing one?

Good God, I just wish people had common sense. While on vacation, I stopped in the bathroom of a restaurant as we were leaving. A woman who had been seated nearby came in a few minutes later on her cell phone WHICH WAS ON SPEAKER! So I rattled the TP holder good and loud, flushed (twice), fumbled loudly the stall door, banged on the paper towel holder. Really, people. Phone calls in the bathroom are NOT . OK.
On the up side, this hasn't happened to me in quite a long time so most people seem to have figured this out. I wonder if this is ever an issue in men's rooms?

10. What's the most messed up food combination that you've had that was actually good?

Uhm. If it tastes good I don't consider it messed up. But getting past the messed-up concept can be a stumbling-block. I don't often feel adventuresome.

11. What's one of your most random pet peeves (something that annoys you)?

Aside from phone calls in public restrooms? hah Slackers. I work with one. She really needs a boot up her ass that will loft her out the door, permanently. Such a freakin' waste of space, air, and salary.

12. When is the last time you had home cooking?

I made chili on Friday. Last of the season. It's quite spicy--chorizo FTW.

13. If you could be a fictional character from a book who would you choose?

Nancy Drew of course.

14. If you could be in a television sit-com, which would you choose?

For various reasons, Gilligan's Island is appealing today. I'd prefer to live on the "other side of the island" though, if at all possible. Maybe me and the Professor could share accommodations....

15. If you could be any animal or creature for one day, what would it be?

Wolf.

Meijer. Though I'm a new fan of Peapod, too.

Saturday Six

1. M is for MACROPHOBIA: How paranoid are you about having to sit for a long period of time in a doctor's waiting room? Do you worry you'll catch something from sick people in the room with you?

I literally never worry about this. When Sparky was a tot, those thoughts were a little nearer reality but on his behalf not mine. I hate waiting at the doctor's office because I hate waiting not because of the germs.

2. M is for MAGNITUDE: What's the strongest earthquake you've ever experienced?

It was in the 5's but I don't remember exactly. Felt like a truck hit the building I was in.

3. M is for MAMMAL: Not counting people, what's your favorite mammal?

I'm partial to most in the Canidae family.

4. M is for MATURE: If you had to pick a general age at which you think the majority of young people today are mature enough to make their own decisions, which age would you choose?

37. And I don't think that age has changed much from earlier eras.

5. M is for MINGLE: How good are you at mingling in a room full of strangers in a social setting?

I'm pretty good with it. Having said that, the first thought that popped into my mind when I read this question is, "YUCK!" So, I guess I'm good at it even though I hate it.

6. M is for MOPED: If you lived close enough to work to use a moped, what would be the biggest obstacle for you to use it as your primary transportation there?

Where to park it where it won't get damaged. Also, the weather. Brrr.
