1) In this song, Ms. Kitt sings that her lover is her favorite work of art. Tell us about a piece of artwork you can see from where you're sitting now. (Yes, that crayon drawing created by your 5-year-old nephew counts.)

It's actually super-dark in the corners of the room right night, so I can only barely see the papyrus my college roommate brought back from Egypt 34 years ago. I'm sure she paid approximately one dime for it, but we had it and a matching one my inlaws had matted & framed a few years ago.

2) She asks him to not change his hair. When will you next find yourself in the stylist's chair?

I haven't had a haircut since early September, so I should probably get that remedied. My stylist is going to want to cut my hair shorter though, so there'll be an argument. "Argument" is too harsh; there'll be a discussion.

3) Ms. Kitt always wanted to be a performer and attended the New York School of Performing Arts (aka the "Fame" school). Think back to your high school self. In what ways would you be surprised by how your life turned out?

I had no specific expectations for what my adult life would look like. I think it's turned out more or less the way I assumed it would.

4) Ms. Kitt took over the role of Catwoman on TV's Batman. Name another Batman villain.

5) Ms. Kitt enjoyed tremendous success performing in Parisian nightclubs. Have you ever been to Paris?

Nope. Not really all that interested.

This is the last Saturday 9 before Valentine's Day and so this morning we shall focus on the upcoming holiday.6) The holiday is also known as The Feast of St. Valentine. Do you have a special meal planned for next Wednesday?

Oh, you're funny as hell. No. I work 5-9 that day, so no fun meals for me that day. And very likely there will be no Valentines either.

7) The phrase "wear your heart on your sleeve" began in medieval times. On Valentine's Day, men would celebrate the holiday by displaying their lady love's name on their sleeves. If you were going to adopt this custom, whose name would you wear?

8) Women buy and send more Valentines than men do. What's the last greeting card you received?

I got a couple of cards ("Hi, we love you!" non-Valentines) yesterday...so don't feel so bad for me regarding the lack of cards next week. ;-)

9) Men buy and send more roses at Valentine's Day than women do. What's your favorite flower?

Heirloom roses, from the year. This year, I might just go buy myself some flowers. I'm in need of a reminder than winter will end eventually.

Happy Holidays! (from the archives)

1. [...] Sam loved giving her annual wish list to Santa. Yet some children are reluctant to climb into Jolly Old St. Nick's lap. Did you enjoy the tradition or were you shy? Or did you by pass it altogether -- either because you wrote him a letter or because your family didn't celebrate Christmas?

I only remember visiting Santa one time. I'm sure I was shy and terrified about it, but it was the first year the Big Mall opened, so it was a Big Deal.

2. Are you currently on the Naughty or Nice list? How did you get there?

Everyone thinks I'm on the Nice list. I guess I am, but I'm sure making some questionable decisions on the daily. Oh well. Doing what I can, I guess.

3. Did you ship any gifts to friends and family this year? If so, which one traveled the farthest?

I send my usual packets of Christmas ornaments to the great-nieces and -nephews, including the two sets that go to England.

4. Did you buy yourself a gift this year?

I did. I bought myself a shirt (I think?) with all the other presents, and a new winter coat today.

5. What's your favorite holiday-themed movie? Have you seen it yet this year?

I'm not at all into this tradition. I haven't seen any Christmas shows this year (movies or TV shows), nor have I heard much music except at church. I'm ok with that--this year wasn't one I want to remember or have stand out (more than it's going to).

6. Thinking of movies, Christmas is lucrative for Hollywood. Have you ever gone to a movie theater on Christmas Day?

Yes. I was going to do so again this year, but Sparky and I went on Xmas Eve to see the latest Star Wars movie. Maybe I'll go see something this weekend too, maybe the Hugh Jackman movie. I'm dealing with the beginning of a cold today, so we'll see how I feel over the weekend about going out in Arctic temperatures.

7. Have you ever suffered an embarrassing moment at the company Christmas party?

I embarrass myself on a pretty regular basis at parties, mostly without having even a whiff of alcohol. And I haven't been to a proper Christmas party in years.

8. What's your favorite beverage in cold weather?

Hot black tea, preferably Earl Grey or English Breakfast.

9. Share a memory from last Christmas.

This is last year's swag. It's currently stacked pretty much in this same order on the dining room table, where it's been sitting for 12 months. Does that explain my life this year? Pretty much.

This year, most of my gifts were food from friends, one shirt and a Not-Yet-Published book from Sparky, and yeah, that's about it.

TV show I loathe:

Pretty much any current sitcom gets on my nerves.

I cannot get through even the first scene of "A Clockwork Orange." It's horrid.

I love the carols on Christmas Eve, and the joy in kids' faces.

I haven't sent cards in a decade.

I find them endlessly amusing.

Normally, I shop all year, but I've tailed off in the past few since I only buy for Beast and Sparky (and a few things for kids). This year, I only started the weekend after Thanksgiving.

Fake.

7. When do you put up your tree?

Normally, something at the beginning of December. This year, not at all.

8. When do you take down your tree?

Early January.

9. Describe your typical tree (size, decorations, type)

Our current fake tree is too small. I'd like one that's another 2-3' tall so I could get all the decorations on again.

10. What do you top your tree with?

A star. Because, among other reasons, I'm in an extended boycott of commercial angels.

Nope.

Usually, yes. Not this year.

Yule Never Be Alone

1. About how many family Christmas photo-cards did you receive this year*?

Maybe 3 or 4. I don't remember, though they are literally scattered everywhere in the house. I need to clean.

2. About how many family Christmas newsletters did you receive this year?

I can only remember two.

3. What do you do with the Christmas photo-cards and newsletters you get each year?

I used to save them, but more recently I just stack them up in assorted places.

4. What’s a good solution for singles who want to participate in this tradition without coming across as a loser?

Single people aren't losers. Talk up all the stuff that married couples would kill for: privacy, quiet, cheaper travel (sometimes), etc. I always loved getting letters from singles when we had a kid. It made me terribly envious.

5. About how many old-school, hand-addressed Christmas cards did you receive this year?

Not more than about 5 that I recall. We stopped sending them about 5 years ago, and we're down to the die-hards, mostly family.

I took last weekend off completely: left town on my own and spent two full days just hanging out and reading and sleeping.

Reading, puzzles, mindless TV if can stagger to the living room.

3. Who do you most want to hear from when you have to withdraw to your bed for a few days of rest?

If I'm that sick, I really don't want anyone near me. For their sake, but also because I'm so easily annoyed.

Total loss of stamina and muscle tone.

5. When you first notice a few symptoms, are you more likely to shut everything down right away, or try to power through until you don’t have a choice anymore?

No, I crap out as early as possible and sleep.

I bought a take 'n bake pizza at Aldi's last night after work. I spatula'd the slices.

Hmm. Chili makin's last month. There's still hardened condensed milk on it. I need to figure out how to soak it....

I can't remember. I remember using them sometime or another fairly recently, but not sure what I was doing.

The aforementioned chili, of course!

I probably was really scared. I only remember standing in line one time for Santa, and I probably wigged out, but I do remember sitting on his lap for about 3 seconds and getting a candy cane at the end of the ordeal. I was probably 6 or 7 at most when that happened.

2. Are you currently on the Naughty or Nice list? How did you get there?

I suppose I'm on the Nice list. I usually am, though I've had my years of edging towards Naughty. I'm never very bad though. Even when I was hardest on myself, I wasn't that bad.

3. Did you ship any gifts to friends and family this year? If so, which one traveled the farthest?

I shipped three packages on Monday. I suck. The overseas one may not make it, but they aren't getting together as a family till next week anyway.

4. Did you buy yourself a gift this year?

Not ... exactly ...? Kinda? I mean, I bought (too many) Hallmark Trek ornaments in ?June? when they hit the market this year. I missed the later additions though, since their release hit at the same time the money dried up. That's probably about all Beast and I are "getting" this year. Since last year's haven't even been unboxed downstairs, though, it's almost like we have two years to look at if we get around to putting them out/up next week.

5. What's your favorite holiday-themed movie?

I don't like movies because of their holiday associations per se. We went and saw Collateral Beauty this week which has lots of Christmas setting-stuff, but it wasn't "about" Christmas. Good movie though. Bring Kleenex.

6. Thinking of movies, Christmas is lucrative for Hollywood. Have you ever gone to a movie theater on Christmas Day?

Yes I have. And I think we're doing it again tomorrow. We saw Little Women back in '94 on Christmas, probably at least a couple since then, and tomorrow is Star Wars Rogue One day for us. It's our reward for behaving at my niece's house tomorrow afternoon.

7. Have you ever suffered an embarrassing moment at the company Christmas party?

Nope. I save my embarrassing moments for family get-togethers.

Same as in warm weather: diet Dr. Pepper. I do like eggnog, but really, I can't drink very much: it's too rich.

Beast had surgery a year ago and came home on Christmas Eve. It was a very low-key holiday, but definitely a good one.

What is some of your favorite music?

I'm super-basic. "Good beat, easy to dance too" and it's a huge bonus if there's some lyrical content as well. I like Katy Perry, P!nk, Elvis, Rusted Root, The Police, The Supremes, Bruno Mars, Nina Simone....

Vanilla, Pine, Sage.

How do you ground yourself or recharge?

This is one way. I also read. And sleep.

I eat far, far too much sugar.

Share something difficult you've been through.

Life. Really, it's just life. Mine has been easier than a lot of peoples' in a lot of ways, but there've certainly been bumps. Couple of surgeries, couple of giant roadblocks, multiple family deaths. Lots of drama. Lots of good moments too.

What helps you fall asleep?

Exhaustion. Crosswords and reading and puzzles.

What is one strength and one weakness of yours?

Strength in plowing through whatever fresh hell awaits me. Unwillingness to do anything BUT plow through everything. I'll let you figure out which is a strength and which is a weakness.

Have you ever received a letter or written one to someone else?

How old is the person who wrote this question?? I've gotten dozens of letters, and sent a few too. Lately, in fact.

What makes you feel powerful, what breathes life into you?

Joy. Giggles, mine or others. Sunshine is kind of important too.

What's your favorite thing to do at night?

SLEEP!

If you could go back to any era, what would they it be?

I wouldn't want to stay there, that's for sure! It would be kind of fun to see my grandmothers before they were old and creaky, though, and maybe meet my grandfathers for the first time.

Your favorite things to wear at home?

Pajamas, warm socks, T-shirt or sweatshirt. This time of year, a blanket is not unwelcome.

If you could be immortal or have an extremely long life span which would you pick and why?

I don't want to live forever, OR for an extremely long time. I'd trade it in for something useful.

Tell us about something positive you have done for yourself or someone recently.

I've slept. A lot. And done a lot of reading. Not enough of the right kind probably. And I've just "done" for myself as necessary and let the long-term stuff sit around and wait without worrying. It's been a lovely 5-week stretch.

One thing you like about your appearance?

I like my hair. [she glances at a mirror] ...though perhaps not today.

Something that makes you feel better after a hard day?

Sleep. I seem to be on a roll here.

My favorite book varies daily. Today, I'll go with The Book of Ruth. Movie? My usual answer is "Heathers."

I ADORE beards! Not the hipster/Old-Testament-y versions big right now, but a nice, short, generally well-groomed beard is delicious. For the record, I loathe stubble--grow it out or shave it off. :-)

I think I'll try being more mindful of starting a pay-it forward line when I'm in various drive-thrus in town.

The parts of Missouri and Arkansas that were on our list for last October that had to be canceled. And maybe my nieces babies overseas.

I've decided that I am going to read Umberto Eco this year. First up: The Name of the Rose.

I need to write Rosellen and Tom and apologize for 'outing' their news before they did it. I'm an idiot. (see the first question)

I've heard that there's this kind of food group called "healthy" and I'm hoping to get better about eating it more regularly.

I only remember going to see Santa once as a child. That doesn't mean I only did it once, but I only remember the one time. I was probably rather shy, but I don't remember being afraid.

2. Are you currently on the Naughty or Nice list? How did you get there?

At work I'm firmly ensconced on the Naughty List, despite my best efforts to change that. I was actually told it would be easier to deal with me if I was angry all the time. I believe I'm done being friendly with the majority of my coworkers if that's the guff I get back from the boss, who of course won't (can't) tell me specifically who is "afraid" of me, just that "people" are. So my (early) New Year's Resolution is that I will discuss work-related issues only when I'm at work. I've blocked all but two coworkers from most of my Facebook posts (because apparently someone went running to Daddy the boss about something I posted there in which I used zero names or specifics). So, yeah, not feeling overly Nice.

3. Did you ship any gifts to friends and family this year? If so, which one traveled the farthest?

I shipped the Christmas ornament of the year to all the great-nephews. Next year there'll be great-nieces! In fact, any second now there'll be girls--Rosellen is massively pregnant with twins. Anyway. The farthest away I shipped was Leicester, England, for Simi and A.

4. Did you buy yourself a gift this year?

Of course I did! :-)

5. What's your favorite holiday-themed movie?

I don't really care about holiday movies. We didn't watch any this year at all. Yesterday, we caught the last half of "Ghostbusters" which is a weird movie for Christmas.

6. Thinking of movies, Christmas is lucrative for Hollywood. Have you ever gone to a movie theater on Christmas Day?

I have, a couple of times! The one I remember vividly is the year my Dad and Ellen died, we left Sparky with my mom and went to see "Little Women"--the Winona Ryder version--across the street from her apartment. It was a lovely day, and a lovely movie.

7. Have you ever suffered an embarrassing moment at the company Christmas party?

I try to behave, and only embarrass myself to the extent that I have a horrible tendency to develop foot-in-mouth disease at bad times, but not limited to parties, and not brought on by over-festive-ness.

8. What's your favorite beverage in cold weather?

The same as any other time of year. Oh, I'll have tea occasionally, but not that often.

9. Share a memory from last Christmas.

I don't remember much about Christmas Day last year. We were prepping for our trip to Pasadena to see the Tournament of Roses Parade, and Sparky was prepping for his month-long study in Hawaii. Last year was also the first time we all went to the Christkindlmarkt in the Giant City Near Us. I hope it won't be the last, though this year it wasn't happening because of Beast's medical situation.

Birds Are Chirping Meme

Name a product you buy mostly because it has a cool package.

I wish I could say that I didn't do this, but I'm pretty sure I've been sucked into this. Unfortunately, the only thing I can think of right now is that I can now buy prepackaged baggies of fresh mini-peppers at the grocery store. That's a bit sad.

What flavor cake do you like for your birthday?

Vanilla with buttercream frosting. I'm not agin lemon cake, but tone down the chocolate and NO FRUIT! In a city where I used to live, and where we have good friends who serve cake regularly, every cake seems to have a layer of jam--it ruins a perfectly delicious cake!

Have you ever been in love with someone much older or younger than you?

I'm assuming this means romantic love. So, no. I've loved a lot of people of many different ages non-romantically.

Have you ever had a job you loved?

I have one now. I love it when it's not making me incredibly angry.

Have you ever been in a building that was on fire?

Thank God, no!

Are you in an argument with anyone right now?

Not really. I'm past my limit of patience with one person at work, though, which is difficult. She's a friend but also I'm her supervisor, so that makes things complicated, and she's ... challenging ... right now.

Would you change your hair color to something outrageous if you would get paid to?

Honestly, I'd probably do it for free if I could be assured it wasn't going to be tragically high-maintenance. One of my co-workers died her hair blue about two weeks ago and it's still washing out and staining her (very pale) skin. She looks like skim milk. I want dye that goes on, stays in my hair (only) for a good long time, and washed out when I'm done.

Have you ever written a poem for someone?

I've written poems about situations. I don't think I've ever written for a person, though, no.

What is a place you’ve vacationed at and would like to go back to?

Do you eat samples at the grocery store?

Occasionally.

What do you absolutely have to have to make your birthday feel special?

Acknowledgement from someone I love that it's my birthday: a card, an email, a gift, a cake, SOMEthing. Sparky, are you listening??

What’s the last tourist area you visited?

The main part of the downtown of the city in which I work is supposedly a "tourist attraction." Whatever. I shop there, I eat lunch there and not because it's touristy, though it is pretty attractive.

Where do you go out to eat for a special occasion?

Probably the resort town north of us, or a really yummy chicken place on the way to said resort.

When was the last time you went to a post office?

I stopped at our P.O. box a couple of weeks ago. Beast usually goes. Otherwise, I pretty much never deal with the USPS.

Is there an item you are saving up to buy right now?

We're thinking about new kitchen countertops. Not really saving up, just deciding how to spend the money we already have saved.

Are you psychic in any way?

That's assuming I believe in psychics in the first place. :-) No. But I think Beast is. And I definitely have had some weird precognitive dreams.

Do you prefer a laptop or desktop? Which are you on now?

They each have their good points. I prefer my laptop, but I like my work desktop a lot too. For different reasons.

Have you ever received a gift and truly did not know what it was?

Yes. And I've received gifts that I recognized but couldn't understand anyone would think I'd need/want them.

I don't have my own site. My browser is set to open my work internal homepage, Gmail and work email automatically in one page and OCLC Connexion in another window. At home, I've always got Inoreader, Blogger, Gmail, Facebook, Goodreads and Random.org open, in two browser windows.

Is there a thing you enjoy doing, but quit because you are not good at it?

Not exactly. I quit bell choir at church because I couldn't deal with the non-music stress of it. Too many chiefs, too many different levels of musical knowledge, general bitchiness....no thanks. I'm pretty good at the music but not at ignoring all the rest of it. I do not enjoy drama!

I think I got one from Beast...? That was over 6 months ago...who knows, really. The only person in my immediate family who's in trouble for lack of cards is NOT Beast.

Have you ever made a ball of twine or rubber bands?

Better a ball than finding the twine all over the floor/drawer tangled in everything else. As for rubber bands, I once bought a ball of them...and the vast majority dried up before I could put them to use. I almost never use them. I don't like the way they make my hands smell. OTOH, I used to chew on them when I was a kid. Yeee-uuuuck!!

Could you ever be a living organ donor?

I could! Just ask. I've been on the bone marrow registry for over 20 years, waiting.

Have you ever made someone cry?

I am Mommy, hear me roar! Usually roaring involves "no," of course. And I've caused tears in others too, including (I'm sure) my parents and other family and friends near and far.

If you could have a full scholarship to any university what would you choose to study?

Theology? I wouldn't mind going to seminary...IF I had all the time and money in the world, and patience to deal with the more 'traditional' students.

Do you prefer honey or jam?

Honey. No contest. The fresher the better. I don't like chunks in my bread-spread.

How fast can you get changed?

If it's a one-for-one change--T-shirt/jeans to T-shirt/jeans--probably 90 seconds. If socks, underwear, jewelry, or a change in the level of dressiness is involved, it could take me 20 minutes or so. Or more if we're adding in nylons and a totally different hairstyle. And of course, this assumes that the clothes I'm changing into have already been pulled together before I start shedding.

Would you rather be the fella in a movie who gets the girl or the baddie with all the good lines?

Oh, I'm all about the sidekick with all the good lines. That doesn't mean I'm a baddie, but I prefer comedy to romance.

Would you rather have a man's top half and a woman's bottom half or visa versa?

I'd pretty much rather be one or the other all over, my apologies to hermaphrodites and intergender people everywhere.

If you met a genie who offered you three wishes, what would you wish for? "More wishes" does not count!

I’ll spread my wings and I’ll learn how to fly

1. Have you ever had a pen pal?

I have! Kim R and I corresponded for a couple of years when I was about 8. She was from Connecticut (so I learned how to spell that early!). Then when I was about 14, Kristina A and I met up via letter--she lived on Long Island and she was allowed to make phone calls so we talked rather more often than most pen pals do. That friendship was far too much of a mis-match to last, however. When I was a junior in high school, somehow Vickie P and I hooked up. She lived in Washington state and was heavily into that early-grunge, post-New Wave scene. We corresponded for perhaps 3 years. There was a guy in Brazil I wrote to briefly while in college--that was just weird, but he was drop-dead gorgeous. There was a girl in Japan in high school named Kumiko--I still have a lovely Japanese doll she sent me. Let's see. Oh, my college roommate had a Swedish penpal with a friend who wanted a penpal, so Elisabeth and I kept in touch for probably 6 years till adulthood and marriage and family and work intervened. And there was a guy who went to high school with a guy I dated briefly in college who turned out to be a better and longer-term friend than the guy I was dating.
Whew. See, I used to write letters. It's eminently possible I've written myself out.

2. What’s your favorite breed of dog?

Yes.
I like pretty much all dogs. I guess I prefer terriers and retrievers and shepherds, having had those breeds. But I'm not going to be picky since I can't have a dog around me for long. I'll take whatever breed I can spend time with!

3. Can money buy happiness?

It buys comfort. That is often easily mistaken for happiness.

4. Do you listen to music when you’re down?

Yes. But I listen to music whenever I can, regardless of mood.

I honestly can.

I dropped $250+ at Meijer yesterday on groceries and a few things for today's party.

Actually, no one. I PM'd Sparky a couple of times since he is pretty much always in his room and I don't feel like running (or shouting) upstairs for him. But my phone got no usage this weekend.

Sure. We watched a DVR'd episode of Whose Line Is It? and some other random stuff. I went to bed relatively early.

Always. IN spite of current irritation with Sparky's crabbiness about having to miss a D&D session to go to today's birthday party.

More than I ever used to! Probably not often enough though.

Yup. It always does, one way or another. We may not like the resulting picture, but there always is one.

Aside from today's party? lol My second "son" (a good friend of Sparky's from high school) is coming to visit in a couple of weeks. And I do like August and September just because.

Let's Not Be Difficult Meme

1. Do you like your movies and books to be more lighthearted or serious?

My first reaction was to say that it depends on the subject of the book. But actually, having a sense of the absurdity and irony about life around us helps no matter what the topic is. I don't tend to like overly earnest or dead-serious books, fiction or not. I also don't like total silliness, though. It's a tough balance.

2. What’s more important, first impressions or lasting impact?

More important is lasting impact. But if you fail at the first impression you don't often get to hang around to have impact later.

3. Order these areas of psychological health from what you need the least improvement into what you need the most improvement in: physical, emotional, social, intellectual, environmental, spiritual

Intellectual, spiritual, emotional, social, environmental, physical.

4. Do you react appropriately to things and control your feelings?

Oh, who the hell knows? Apparently, I do not have a good grasp of this at work, but I think I'm pretty stable and normal.

5. Do you have stable relationships?

Speaking of which....yes.

6. Do you need to be in a relationship to feel good about yourself?

I need to be in some kind of relationship, yes. Does it have to be love? Not really.

7. Which is the clearest and most concise, your thoughts, your speech or your writing? Which is the least clear and concise?

My writing tends to be most concise when I'm being attentive, because I can edit out egregiously stupid things. Least clear are probably my unfiltered thoughts. I'm definitely a girl this way: I have to verbalize to clarify.

8. Are you always trying to learn new things?

Yes. It can be quite painful, but is almost always rewarding in the end.

9. Do you feel at peace?

In a general sense, yes. There are a few specifics that are far from peaceful, but I'm working on coming to terms with those.

10. Do you have strong morals and ethics that you believe in and adhere to?

Strong ones I believe in. Adhering to them can be a little harder when push comes to shove.

11. Do you think of the needs of all humanity or just the needs of yourself and those you know?

I think about both. I tend to do things more for the people I know than for the good of the universe. Which makes me kind of a jerk, but also pretty normal. It's certainly not something I'm very proud of.

12. Do you recycle?

Yes. As much as possible. It's my saving grace, perhaps, for question 11.

13. Are you active in your community?

Not really. I feel like I do a great deal for my community at work, and I do some volunteering during the school year, so my conscience is clear. However, I've been mulling over getting involved with CASA for awhile. I'm just not sure how much time it would require, and I do hoard my quiet, home times a bit.

14. Are you sensitive to the needs of others?

Yes. To a fault. I'm finding it a little easier lately to set those aside without guilt, but it's hard. I wish I could do more to help people sometimes.

15. Do you dress up to go out?

Five minutes ago, I was standing on my front porch in my nightshirt at 11 a.m. Great timing! I try to dress appropriately for the situation. I'll be at a funeral this afternoon and did check last night to be sure I had something to wear in case I needed to shop this morning. Not only do I have something that will be ok, it's actually more than ok due to the circumstances in play today. I don't, however, make a point of dolling myself up very often. I'm way more casual and more interested in comfort than I am about makeup and what-all.

16. What could make you lose respect for someone?

Lying, hypocrisy, endless (bad) excuses for lousy behavior, and rudeness to others. One of Beast's best friends at work was a super-nice guy named Larry who was as kind and friendly of a guy as anyone we knew. When the two of them ended up spending a lot of time entertaining clients, it turned out that Larry was a complete prick at restaurants: yelling at waitresses, sending his food back for idiotic reasons, tipping poorly, etc. Beast and I both lost a lot of respect for him for that, and it was horribly embarrassing for Beast in front of the clients. He often had to stay after everyone left to increase the tip and/or apologize to the staff, and then make "I'm so sorry" calls the next day to clients.

17. If you won $1,000 every week until you die, would you still go to work?

That would total $52,000 a year, and the government would take some of that in taxes. I can't live here for that, so yes, I'll be heading off to work daily.

18. What trend has been getting on your nerves lately?

Poor cell-phone etiquette drives me nuts. These are not new devices, people. Turn them off when they will disturb others (church, meetings, stage performances, funerals, etc.), or at least set them to vibrate. And don't haul them out to check every time you get a message signal when you're talking F2F with someone. It's really bloody rude, especially if you're talking to an employee who is trying to help you. I do not have time to stand and listen to your husband's difficulties with finding the right kind of yogurt at WalMart, or your wife's complaints about traffic when she should be DRIVING not talking! And for God's sake....WHY do we all SHOUT into our phones??

19. Do you forgive yourself when you make a mistake?

Eventually. Most of the time.

20. Is ignorance really bliss?

Until you realize how stupid you've been and belatedly feel like a tool. Sometimes, in other words, yes. And sometimes ignorance is annoying and/or dangerous.

21. What can be described as ‘even better than the real thing’?

U2 has it pretty much right on.

22. What’s in your wallet right now?

The usual wallet-y stuff: money, license, credit cards, "loyalty" cards up the wazoo, insurance stuff....my CPR card, Sparky's bank account number, a three-year-old Weight Watcher's booklet. I really need to clean the damn thing out. No pictures, because I've known too many people who've lost their wallet and their only/last photo of [important person]. Credit cards, etc., are replaceable; pictures less so. Also, we had a speaker at the library last week who talked about RFID readers and wallets, so I'm considering lining my wallet with tin foil. Yes, I'm aware that this makes me sound like a lunatic, but I'm too cheap to buy a metal wallet.

Yes.

24. Do you ever get the feeling people are laughing at you?

Not so much anymore, but only because I really don't fookin' care anymore. When I do stupid things, I fully expect others to laugh. When people are just being mean, that says so much more about them than me that I don't let it bother me, at least not like it did when I was young and trying to impress everyone.

25. Who’s the one person you’d like to drop a house on?

Interestingly, we were talking about the Wicked Witch yesterday at work, and her ruby slippers. The house-dropping didn't come up, but I'd really like to drop a eally Big House on all the politicians who use scare tactics, half-truths and full-blown lies to forward their agenda. Note that I'm not specifying a particular party, because there are connivers everywhere. However, I'm pretty sure if you've read anything else here before you'll know that I feel one U.S. political party especially needs a big-ass 100-story condo building dropped on it.

   I think it was these socks. Purchased because they are REPRESENTATIONAL! lol

   There are often things in the Sky Mall catalog that intrigue the shit out of me. Also, Hammacher Schlemmer.

3. What is physically the largest item you ever mail-ordered?

   Gotta be Sparky's computer+peripherals from Dell four years ago. Definitely the most expensive thing too!

4. What catalogs do you still receive in the actual mail?

   VS, even though I never use it--right into the recycling. Kohl's sends me stuff regularly. Beast gets all kinds of stuff from Destination XL. There are more, but I'm drawing a blank. Oh, Famous Footwear is always sending me flyers, too.

5. What are some obscure or unusual catalogs you've received?

   We still sometimes get stuff for Beast's mom, who a) never lived here, and b) died almost 7 years ago.
   Also, my sister Jean ordered something online from King Arthur's Flour as a wedding gift for someone and used my address (because her English one wouldn't work) about 15 years ago. That catalog followed me from our old house to this one for about 8 years! And I never once spent a dime on their stuff! Fortunately, I think we stopped getting the catalog before she died, or that would've been quite depressing every month.

Shop On The Corner Meme

What kind of job did your mom have when you were growing up?

I can't tell you how proud I am to see this question. To me it indicates that most people younger than me had moms that worked outside the home.
Ahem. My mom worked as a clerk in the county court from when I turned 3 or 4 until she retired while I was in college. She worked at the District Court office before I was born. So proud of her for working fulltime before women were "supposed" to.

Have you ever known anyone that’s been on TV, including you?

Well, technically I've been on TV, along with everyone in my high school band. And I think I went to school with someone who used to be on the Weather Channel sometimes, and with a local pol in another state. Otherwise, not that I know of. Oh, and a coworker has been on local morning TV in a mascot suit for a winter festival we have.

What was the most interesting animal you have seen in the wild?

What constitutes "in the wild"? We went to a safari park in Canada 15 years ago and saw lions and tigers and giraffes and monkeys who were free-ish to wander. We also watched their small herd of elephants walk to the pond for their daily bath which was exquisitely awesome to see. I have also seen moose completely wild and (I think) brown bears. And buffalo. And lots of rodents and small animals.

What holiday do you enjoy the most?

Thanksgiving.

What was the first video game you ever played?

Pong. In the 70s. Hey dudes: I am old.

What is the one thing you own, that if it got lost, you would be bummed?

I'd be heartbroken if I lost any of my family's Bibles.

61. Do you like current pop stars?

I find myself intrigued by some, and unclear why most others are popular. Miley Cyrus belongs in the former group, Justin Bieber in the latter. I get that he's cute, but I can't get past feeling sorry for him.

I hate doing anything with floors: mopping, vacuuming, sweeping. Guess what my household chore growing up was? Vacuuming the stairs. Yuck.

63. Last place you drove your car?

I came home from work last night. Probably should have gone grocery shopping later, but I did not.

Yes. Several times, to several places.

...right now? This morning? My book blog, earlier this week, though I have another book I need to add. My regular, non-meme blog has been dormant for awhile, like over a month. I do occasionally shoot something over to Oh Life when things get completely crazy.

Define "sick." I haven't had anything specific for awhile, but this week has been fraught with carpal tunnel and other joint-related pain. Even my injured-in-March tailbone has kicked up the pain again. Of course, allergy season has gotten into full-swing now too.

In no particular order: The Centennial State, The Prairie State, and The Badger State. I spent a lot of my childhood in The Equality State took. Unfortunately.

Usage

1. What was the occasion that called for your most recent use of a power tool?

   I haven't used a power tool for anything in eons; like my dad, I'm pretty much a traditionalist. Then again, I don't do a lot of things requiring the use of power tools. I did break out the screwdriver at work last month to take off the grill behind the drinking fountain in the basement at work; the water wouldn't turn off at closing, so C and I had to figure out the water shut-off. Otherwise, nada.
   Unless, of course, you consider a computer a power tool.

2. What was the occasion that called for your most recent use of a postage stamp?

   An actual stamp? Hmm. I think it's been a month or so, and I expect it involved a bill.

3. What was the occasion that called for your most recent use of a threatening word or gesture?

   Oh, I do this all the time, primarily in jest. The last meaningful time? Probably in the car at some point.

4. What was the occasion that called for your most recent use of some transparent tape?

   I use tape at work almost every day; most of the time I'm sticking the slip of cataloging info on a stack of things that share the same call #.

5. What was the occasion that called for your most recent use of Wikipedia?

   I looked up Ricky Schroder at work yesterday to find out the title of a movie a patron requested: "the one about World War I."

   I haven't had one in forever, but I like bomb pops. It's almost Ice Cream Truck Season (not that I've EVER flagged one down for myself).

   Really like Blowpops. However, they are simply not an option anymore because of my teeth.

3. When you passed notes during class in high school, who was mostly often the recipient?

   Laura. Aka, Kermit. Do not ask. I don't know.

   Teri. Or one of the guys, maybe John?

5. Who’s the black sheep in your family?

   My brother, I guess. At least in my generation. I don't think we really have any black sheep anywhere in the family though. Del's more of a medium-gray sheep.

   Ugh. Apparently, me. But I don't want to be! It really should be my oldest sister.

7. What was the last thing you sprayed from a spray bottle?

   Eyeglass cleaner. Yesterday at work.

8. What was the last thing you sprayed from an aerosol can?

   I...don't think I've used anything aerosol for a long time. Certainly, I don't have much at home that qualifies, except the Pam can which I haven't used for awhile. So, probably something at work, but I don't remember.

9. When did you last make reservations for something?

   Me, personally? Probably at a restaurant while on vacation? I don't know. As far as hotels or flights, it's been awhile. Beast has good access to cheap rooms through work, so he does most of that.

10. What’s your next upcoming appointment?

    I have a haircut scheduled next Friday. Lots of meetings and stuff in between, but no appointments.

1) In this song, our hero orders espresso. What's your standard coffee order?

...for someone else...? I don't drink coffee, cannot stand the taste at all! Interesting that they tried to give me a coffee at McDonald's today but (this is sad) as soon as the woman saw me she knew it was wrong, that I always get a large Diet Coke.

2) Originally the phrase "sugar shack" meant a small cabin where sap from maple trees was boiled into syrup. So for breakfast today, would you rather pour syrup on pancakes, french toast or waffles?

I cannot tell you how confused I was when I first heard about real sugar shacks! My whole context for the term was this song, so I was at least closing in on, and perhaps past, age 20 before I sorted out the difference. Anyway, I prefer pancakes.

3) The name of the group that recorded this song is The Fireballs. "Fireballs" is also the brand name of a red hot jawbreaker. Do you like cinnamon?

Was this their only hit? I sense a Wiki-search in my future...* I like cinnamon. I lived on cinnamon-sugar on toast for breakfast for a long time.

4) In 1963, when this song was a hit, newscaster Walter Cronkite was one of the most trusted and influential men in the country. Do you have a favorite TV newsperson?

I like Tom Brokaw and Soledad O'Brien. I used to like Katie Couric, but she's gotten annoying. Stephen Colbert counts, right? Seriously, Mike Wallace was my favorite; I'm so bummed at his passing....

5) The Rambler was named 1963 Car of the Year by Motor Trend, and their most popular model was a 9-passenger station wagon. What's the car of your dreams?

My parents actually HAD a Rambler, though I'm not sure of its vintage, or whether it was around in '63. My dream car is a pickup truck. I had a miniature version that I loved for quite a few years, and I'm now driving a ridiculously fancy SUV that is quite nice.

6) The Zip Code was first introduced in 1963. How many different Zip Codes have you had throughout your life?

I count six. I worked in one additional one. Who else remembers Zippy the cartoon dood who helped us all learn to use the ZIP system?

7) What was the first thing you thought about when you woke up this morning?

Groaned, hit the snooze, and tried to figure out why I had to get up. That carried me back to sleep till I had to snooze again.

8) Are you a good pool player?

No. I totally suck at pool. Poker, I'm solid; pool...so very bad.

Sometimes. I didn't have a cake this year, so no candles, so no wish.

Hopelessly Devoted to You

Olivia Newton-John is a breast cancer survivor and October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Please spread the word about early detection.

1) This is a sad song about unrequited love. What's your favorite love song, and is it happy or sad?

My favorite pop love song is "The Sweetest Thing." I'll let you decide if you think it's happy or sad.

2) This song is from the Grease soundtrack. When that movie came out in 1978, the price of a postage stamp was just 15¢. When's the last time you visited the post office?

Within the last month. We have a mailbox to check, and I think it's my turn. Maybe I'll go do that, pick up Beast's latest Rx, and do a quick grocery shop while I'm in town.

3) Not many people know that Olivia's maternal grandfather, Max Born, won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1954. Share something about yourself that we might not have known before this morning.

One of my nieces has a doctorate in astrophysics. She currently works for the Spanish government doing something with social statistics. I think. Anyway, it does not involve stars.

4) Olivia's father was an officer in MI5, the UK's secret service. Sam's most recent run-in with the authorities had less intrigue or glamor, as it included a policeman pointing out the stop sign she'd somehow missed. Tell us about your most recent encounter with law enforcement.

Well, there were cops in my house last Saturday night. One of them gave me a hug as she left.

5) Olivia is part owner of an exclusive, luxury retreat called Gaia. If you had a day of free access to a heated pool, golf course, tennis court, gym, and day spa, but could only use one, which one would you choose?

Day spa. No contest.

6) Are you flirtatious?

Not particularly, or at least not on purpose. It always amuses (and embarrasses) me when I'm on the receiving end of this sort of thing.

7) Do you more often wear silver, gold, or platinum?

Silver. Again, it's not even a close call.

8) When you're on the phone, do you usually make the first move toward ending the call? Or do you find it hard to say goodbye?

Depends. I'm not a fan of making random calls, but if it's someone I enjoy talking to, I have a hard time hanging up.

9) Would you rather be smarter, richer, or more attractive than you are right now?

Smarter, but not 'book-smart'--smarter about myself and knowing what I'm here for, what to do next (in the Big Picture) sense.
