1. Do you look forward to the spring?

I live in the upper Midwest; the promise of spring is what keeps us all alive from Christmas Day on every winter. "Oh, I saw a bird today!" "Hey, we got two days of sun in a row!" "Are those tree limbs faintly green?"

2. Which area of the sciences do you enjoy the most?

I love physiology. Not so much biology, but the function of systems together. How things are built to work as a unit.

3. If you could own a classical statue in the form of any figure from myth, religion, or even modern fiction, who would you choose?

Athena. I would love to have a copy of the Athena that stood in the Acropolis when it was in its heyday. Of course, we don't know for sure what that statue looked like--I'd want a miniature of it, not full-size, for the record--despite the fake in Nashville. Why Athena? The goddess of wisdom and war.

4. Do you have a good relationship with your mother?

Probably the best I've ever had with her. I mean, we never argue anymore ... (sad face) ... she died 8 years ago.

5. What is your favorite mythological story?

Hmmm. Trying to do this without looking at anything to prompt me. I kind of love the story of Apollo driving the sun across the sky every day. And the story of Prometheus bringing fire to humans, and the punishment he suffered for it. Pretty brutal.

6. If you put on a big feast, what would you serve?

Chicken, burgers, brats, lots of salads, cake, pie. Basically summer cookout fare. However, my usual feast "style" is Thanksgiving-based, so turkey, potatoes, stuffing, veggies, bread, pie pie pie.

7. How do you have fun? (What is your favorite 'Earthly Delight'?)

Reading? Traveling for sure. Laughing for sure.

8. Do you often look for hidden messages and meanings?

Most of the time. Usually not in the moment, but later. However, I'm also very prone to reminding myself that sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

9. Have you ever received an award or special position?

Yup.

10. If a revolution was about to happen in your country, would you be part of it?

Oh, this is the part that's timely! hee Well, let's put it this way: I visited the Soviet Union at the end of its life as a country. When the U.S. starts to feel like that, I'll be fighting. My dad fought in WW2, I have read extensively about the Holocaust, and when I see that happening here I'll be fighting. I'll let you decide if either of those (or both) scenarios have any application today.

11. Have you ever planned an act of revenge?

Oh, I've done a LOT of planning!! The question is whether I've ever carried any plans out, though, isn't it?
A former boss told me once that the best way to get through a fraught situation is to quietly plan the demise of the person causing trouble. This has stood me in good stead through many meetings since.

12. What is the most dramatic thing you have ever done?

I don't generally DO dramatic. Maybe throwing the bag of trash back at the people who flung it one night decades ago at the lakefront on July 4. All the boys in our group were like, "Sit DOWN, what are you DOING!?!" I've done some really shocking, scary things over the years, but I wouldn't call them dramatic per se.

13. Do you care about your weight?

I care, but it's clear that I don't care enough to deal with it responsibly.

14. Is your life moving too slowly or too fast?

It's really moving at a pretty reasonable speed right now. Parts could go faster. Parts could slow down some.

15. Do you prefer to stay in the shade?

Yes. I'm a pale-skinned, easily-burned person. And, metaphorically, yes.

16. If you could have any mural on your ceiling, what would it look like?

I wouldn't. These have always made me wonder about the people living in the house. Do you WANT people to be staring up while you're talking to them? Or do you expect people to be so bored that they need something to look at while they're visiting?

17. Do you enjoy the countryside?

heh ... Yeah, I do.

18. Are you a romantic?

Nope.

19. What is your favorite historic subject?

Early Church history, c. A.D. 30 to 200. I also like WW2 stuff, as mentioned above. And the Middle Ages. I just like history, can you tell?

20. Do you prefer landscape paintings?

Nope. I've always needed to have some people in the frame to interest me. I have memories of ENDLESS slide shows of landscapes/scenery as a child. "Didn't you take any pictures of PEOPLE, Dad???"

21. Are you interested in social issues?

Uh, yeah. You could probably say that. Those (few) of you on my Facebook feed are probably rolling your eyes and going, "Nonstop, man, nonstop."

1) This song makes reference to rainbows. Have you seen one lately?

It hasn't been sunny around here during rain lately. No rainbows. Just a lot of water falling down. OTOH, several gay friends post rainbows regularly on Facebook, so....

I have my crosswords and Nook games at bedtime that soothe me into restfulness.

"Jew-ler-ee" is not a word. Neither are "Lye-ber-ree", "N(y)oo-ku-lur" or "Ho-made." That last one is at least mildly amusing.

4) Karen Carpenter said she drank iced tea all day long. What beverage do you think you'll have with your next meal?

Diet Dr. Pepper. I suppose you could count the big handful of raw walnuts as lunch, and I'm currently drinking DDP.

5) "I Won't Last a Day without You" was written by Oscar-winning composer Paul Williams. He also tried his hand at acting, most notably appearing with Burt Reynolds in Smokey and the Bandit. Back in the 1970s, the three movies in the Smokey series were very popular. Have you seen any of them?

Uh, yeah, hello! I was on the young end of the prime demographic for watching Burt Reynolds in his heyday. I've always thought he and Sally (Field) were the perfect couple. ...sigh

6) This song was recorded in 1973 by Diana Ross. Now in her 70s, Miss Ross is still going strong with a busy calendar of appearances in 2017. What's your favorite Diana Ross song?

I've been hearing "I'm Coming Out" quite regularly lately on Spotify (see footnote below), but my favorite is "MacArthur Park" just because it's so freakin' over-the-top and melodramatic! I worry about that cake being out in the rain...

Not astronomy. Beast is the Science Stud in my house, though I enjoy some biology/physiology stuff. Chemistry, physics, astronomy....yaaaaawwnnnnnn! My niece is an astrophysicist and even SHE doesn't work in her field!

8) Before Michael Phelps, Mark Spitz was American's premier Olympic swimmer. In 1972 he won seven Gold Medals. After making millions in endorsements and TV appearances, he settled into a career as a realtor in Los Angeles. Are you contemplating a change in residence any time soon? If you move, will you be consulting a realtor?

Mark Spitz is a realtor!? (hey, there's another word that is on my list of peeves: it's "ree-uhl-tor" not "ree-luh-tur"!) OK, the thought of moving makes me physically ill, but I think we need to start being realistic. Beast struggles up our stairs, and there are a lot of them--7 to get to the main floor from outside, 15 to the 2nd floor bedrooms, another 7 down to the basement--and I worry that I'm going to find him dead at the bottom one day after a fall. He, of course, wants to stay put here. And before we really consider moving, we need to repaint and replace some floors. And then we'll call one of the many realtors we know, yes.

9) Random question: Which of these is completely, 100% UNTRUE of you -- boring, lazy or stupid?

I'm not 100% stupid. I have my blonde moments (my hair is going from dark brown to gray, so I'm getting closer to blonde these days anyway!), but I'm far lazier and more boring than I am stupid.

The Cat Meme
This is going to be weird; buckle up!

1. Do you have a cat?

I don't think one ever "has" a cat. I think it's more likely, just from observation, that a cat "has" (a) human(s). On the other hand, I am allergic to cats so I try to avoid them, which only means I am their favorite person, probably because I won't pet them.
On the third had, I am a Cat.!!

2. What is your cat's name?

This cat is named Cat. My imaginary cats are legion, and nameless, except in their ineffable inscrutability. (see here)

3. What makes you love cats?

It's a self-referential thing, don'tchaknow?As for the furry kind...I don't. I find them rather annoying at best; this is primarily because they literally make me sick. Just thinking about my niece's house--she's "down" to "only" three cats now, from a high of five a couple of years ago--is giving me a headache and making me itch. From a distance, I admire how independent cats are, and how well they are able to train their humans. And they are amusing, whether then intend to be at times or not.

4. If you are not a cat person, why not?

I believe I've gotten there already. I'm not kidding: I'm getting a psychosomatic headache just thinking about this subject....

5. What is the funniest thing your cat has ever done?

I do ridiculous shit practically on an hourly basis. But, like all cats everywhere, I totally MEANT TO DO IT!

6. Do you think you have to have a special gene to be a cat person or can a hooman be trained to love cats?

Oh, I think anyone can learn to love animals, except I suppose sociopaths. Even then ... The mere fact of being an animal lover shouldn't blind us to other negative traits--wasn't Hitler a dog guy? Woops, there's a digression of epic proportions!

7. Do you think cats have feelings and can talk to their owners?

Of course they can! I may not love them, but for crying out loud, of course they have feelings and communicate with others!! What sort of elitist human wouldn't admit this? This reminds me of the Bio prof in college who insisted that animals don't feel pain; all us non-sciencey people in the (Science for Dummies) class just stared at him like he'd just told us the chairs and desks were made of braunsweiger. That was the moment when I realized the door to my potential science career had slammed shut in front of me.

8. (BONUS QUESTION) The Rainbow Bridge is the place where cats go when they pass away. I think it's a lovely idea. If humans could have a bridge of their own in the afterlife, what would you name it?

I thought dogs went there too? Frankly, when I get to the afterlife, it better be RIGHT NEXT DOOR to the Rainbow Bridge, because if there's not dogs (and, ok, cats) in heaven, I don't wanna be there!! Seriously. This is not negotiable. I hope the Big Guy is paying attention.

Quick. What’s the first green thing you see?

The Airborne bottle on the table next to me has some green on it. Also the bass player on the Daytona warm-up band (Florida Georgia Line) is playing a nifty dark green instrument.

I do at least one a day, in bed at night, on my Nook. So, yeah.

I do. It's technically my dad's and no longer has sleeves because he'd almost worn through them when I inherited it after he died.

Shout Out The Answer Meme

Do you shout out the answers at the TV while watching quiz shows?

Only if I'm alone. I've discovered how annoying it is when someone does that while you're trying to watch (and figure out the answers).

Do you get over-involved with TV or movie plots at times?

Define "over-involved." lol
I've dreamed about TV shows. And yes, I do find myself pondering the show--or rather the characters--at odd times at work or while doing chores.

What's the highest hill or mountain you've ever climbed?

I grew up in the mountains of Colorado. While I never "climbed a mountain" in the sense of people doing Everest, I've been up my share of 12,000-foot+ high peaks. And rooted around the sides of several of those for fun too. From bottom to top in one go, that would be Big Squaw Mountain with my mother-in-law, Beast, and his brother in about 1988.

Do you have a piggy bank?

I do. One of these days I'll take a picture of it so I can post it. I love that bank!

What's the fastest you've ever traveled in a car?

TOO fast. I was in a car going close to 100 mph in traffic probably 20 years ago. It was exhilarating and stupid as hell.

Could you ever hand milk a cow?

Probably not. I suspect whichever cow got stuck with me would be pretty irritated pretty quickly, and I'd probably get smacked with a hoof or two. Also, I don't think my hands would hold up long enough. Yay, RSI.

Which was your favorite science? Biology, Physics or Chemistry?

Bio, once we got past cells. I hated the always-too-lengthy focus on cells, but systems, oh yeah! Loved muscles, skeletons, even nerves and digestive systems! OK, not a fan of all the stomach enzymes, but otherwise......SO COOL!

Have you ever had a surprise party? (that was an actual surprise)

I had two surprise baby showers before Sparky was born! Clearly, my brain wasn't working very well that both times I was 100% clueless. I threw a surprise graduation party for Beast when he got his MBA--at our house! He had no idea.

Have you ever warn clothing with the labels/tags still attached?

Nowadays, with the printed-on tags, I do it all the time. :-) And yes. Not too long ago, someone had to peel something off the back of my leg off of pants I was wearing for the first time. That was a little embarrassing.

Have you ever slipped on a banana skin?

Nope. I wonder where that comes from? Did people used to do that? Or was that a stand-in for all the piles of manure that used to litter streets prior to cars?

Are you scared of the dark?

Nope. I actually love darkness. I fully respect the power of darkness to mess with our senses, though. Ever been underground in a cave with no flashlight? Yeah. Awesome-scary.

Do you have a lawyer?

Hmmm. I know a fair number of attorneys, but I haven't paid any of them recently. We really need to go get our wills updated, though. Soon.

If you had a paid year off, what would you want to do?

Travel! I would love to do a world cruise.

How long did you[r] last phone call last?

...I can't even remember the last time I used a phone outside of work calls. My last work call, yesterday, was probably only a minute of actual phone time, with a period on hold in the middle. Personal call.....jeez, I think it's been over a week, when I call someone in Al-Anon about missing a meeting where I had meant to drop off boxes.

Have you ever helped someone across the road?

Yup. Everyone in my family is older than me, and many of them are or have been frail.

Have you ever been wolf whistled in public?

Ugh, thank God I'm old now!! I was first wolf-whistled while sitting on my front lawn when I was about 11. Who the FUCK does that?

1. A is for ABORTION: Do you feel that at least in certain circumstances, abortion should be an allowed option for couples, or would you ban it entirely for any reason whatsoever?

I am, and always have been, 100% pro-choice. It's really a decision best made by the people involved, not me or some yahoo in Washington with a bug up his butt.

2. A is for ABSENTEE: Have you ever voted by absentee ballot? If so, how well did it go?

I voted absentee while in college at least a couple of times, and I think I've done that here too, although they call it pre-voting or something else--basically, the courthouse is available for voting for a week or so ahead of election day. It's much easier some days to do either of these than stressing about getting to the polling place on time on the day.

3. A is for ACHILLES: Which non-diet food is your biggest weakness?

Sugar. Anything sweet. Doesn't have to be chocolate. I used to eat pre-sweetened Kool-Aid mix out of the container when I was a kid. Hello, diabetes, my friend. [not quite yet]

4. A is for AIRCRAFT: What's the largest plane you’ve flown in and where were you going?

My college group flew home from Europe in 1985 in a double-decker 747, in the upstairs section. It was absolutely AWESOME--like having a private room in a fancy restaurant; we were the only people up there, and it wasn't even full. Ah, those good old days of empty seats on planes....

6. A is for ARCHITECTURE: What is the most impressive structure you've seen in person?

Hmm. My favorite church building is Durham Cathedral, but Vatican City is astonishing. So is Moscow's Kremlin. And the Winter Palace. And the Summer Palace, not to mention the Forbidden Palace. The Acropolis. The House on the Rock. Taliesin West. Most of the buildings on the Strip in Vegas. Shit. I can't pick. ... WAAAITTTT! Yes I can: the Registan in Samarkand. It is simply beautiful, even when I saw it under Soviet control. Unbelievable, irrepressibly gorgeous. I would love to see it again in person.... [Can you tell my dad was an architect?]

6. A is for ASTRONOMY: Other than Earth, which planet in our solar system are you most curious about?

I'm...really not curious about planets. My niece tried to explain astronomy to me while she was working on her Ph.D. and it just totally lost me. I like the science shows about space and such, but I'm just not interested enough to be curious.

1. Do you understand a belief model based on creationism?

Do I...? What? I have no problem integrating the metaphors in the creation story/ies with the theories of evolution. Does that answer the question?

2. Is your house run more like a dictatorship or a democracy?

It's a benign oligarchy. Mostly benign. Except when it's fraught.

3. Are you likely to forgive a transgression and give someone a second chance?

Depends on the gravity of the transgression and who or what was transgressed. I'd forgive a temper tantrum, in most cases, easier than I'd forgive anything premeditated.

4. Is religion a big part of your life?

Yup. But you probably knew that, assuming you've seen any of my other posts anywhere.

5. Do you feel your job (or your spouse's if you work at home) is safe?

Mine is pretty solid. Beast's should be solid, based on his sales figures. But since I don't understand how corporate America works, who knows, really.

6. Do you believe in gay marriage? Why?

It's not a matter of belief, it's a matter of fact. Do I think it's a bad thing that two men or two women get married? No. Seriously, why the hell should I care about other people's sex lives?

7. Do you think the current U.S. war will lead to a more peaceful world?

Not bloody likely!

8. Do you like people with swagger?

Have they earned the swagger? In general, I'm not a fan of cockiness overall, but sometimes it fits the person and/or the situation.

The Her Head Is Part Missing Meme

1. What is your most annoying habit?

The one that annoys me the most is biting my nails and cuticles. Other people probably would have different answers, including barking at them when I'm stressed out.

2. What habit would you change of your partners? (come on no-one is perfect!) [Editor's note: Not only does it assume you have A partner, but it is written as though you have multiple ones. If you do not currently have a partner or many partners, simply tell us about your last one. BW]

Of ALL my partners (ha ha ha) I would probably change their communication habits. Of my current partner, I would change his back. He needs a brand-new one.

3. Horrors or Chick Flicks?

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of either, but since I haven't made it through a horror movie in decades, we'll go with chick flicks. I'm more inclined to like action flicks or historical documentaries.

4. What is the most outrageous thing you have done in the back row of the movies?

I'm pretty sure I've never sat in the back row at a movie. [thus avoiding the meat--ahem--of the question]

5. When have you lied to get a job?

I haven't. I'm not such a great liar in these circumstances.

6. What one thing is on your list to do before you hit 30, 40, 50 or whatever significant birthday is next?

This presumes I have a List somewhere of Things To Do. I would love to get my photos sorted out, and I would love to get my parents files organized, and I would LOVE for my brother to give me Dad's slides so I could organize and digitize those.

7. Classic or modern films and why?

More important to me that they be GOOD films.

8. If you were a vampire who would be the first person you would bite?

The first person I'd probably drain (and kill) would be...hmmmm, the people I want dead are not people I'd want to bite. Yuck.

9. If you had the power to make one thing better, what would it be?

I would fix the way magazines are currently doing their digital download editions. Some of them are doing fairly well, but the ones I prefer to read are NOT. I'd add to all of them the ability to "tear out a page" for later use.

10. What makes a great blog?

Humor, decent spelling and grammar, limited obsessive navel-gazing, and honesty.

11. What was the inspiration that brought your blog to the blogosphere?

My first "a-ha" was that it was a great way to track my reading. I'd been doing that in paper format for over a decade (I think) before the blog. Now I have an easy way of keeping a formatted list that I can print off--after some horking around to make it pretty on paper--and go back and review at any time.

12. What easily ticks you off (puts you in a bad mood) quickly?

People with shitty attitudes about every-damn-thing. I'm thinking of you, CT.

13. How many children do you have?

I have personally given birth once to a boy. On Fb, I have a son and a daughter--her request. After 6 years of leading our church youth group, and multiple other years of teaching Sunday School, I feel like I have rooms-full of kids.

14. Is there anything you have ever regretted writing on your blog?

Yup. And for the most part I have deleted, rewritten or hidden those things.

15. What’s your favorite blog post you have written this year so far?

I've done 119 posts on this blog this year. I've done approximately 70 posts in other venues. Having now spent 15 minutes grazing through the past three months, I somewhat randomly will assign "favorite" to this post for no reason other than because it's a good snapshot of Life as a Librarian.

16. Do you ever enter other bloggers' competitions, and have you ever been lucky?

Nope.

17. If you could be anyone else for the day, who would you choose and why?

I wouldn't mind a day as Beast since I could probably dispense with one of his problem customers and figure out what the hell he does all day.

18. If you could time travel to any period of history what era would you visit?

Now and here. I certainly would not want to be a woman before about 1960 in any culture.

19. If you had to be genetically modified, would you rather have a third arm, a third leg, a second head or some other modification???

I'd just like to be cloned so I could do two things at once, and do them both well.

Bert & Ernie may be left-handed but they're not gay

1) Today (Aug. 12) is National Middle Child's Day. What is your placement in your family's birth order?

I am unequivocally the baby. But because I was so long after the other kids (10 years between me and my bro), I'm also almost an only.

2) Tomorrow (Aug. 13) is International Left-handers' Day. Are you right-handed, left-handed or ambidextrous?

Right-handed. My left arm is pretty much there only for balance (and today, to cause me great pain in my back...sigh).

3) Are there any weird combinations of food that you love to consume -- like a hamburger made with a sliced doughnut instead of a bun (or something a little less odd than that)?

I like potato chips, the ripply kind, on a white bread and American cheese (and butter) sandwich. It's actually about the only way I do like potato chips.

4) After a petition for Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie to get married grew to more than 5,000 signatures, Sesame Street has come out and said Bert and Ernie aren't gay and won't be getting married. Have you ever wanted two fictional characters of the same sex to become lovers?

No, I can't say as I have. And Bert & Ernie aren't gay. Jeez, people, get a freakin' life. It's a TV show, not real life. Sesame Street muppets are asexual anyway.

5) What is a common misconception people have about you?

That I'm quiet, kind, and organized. STEE-RIKE, YER OUT!

6) Tomorrow (Aug. 13) is National Garage Sale Day. Have you ever seen anything weird for sale at a garage/yard/rummage sale?

That's usually ALL I see at garage sales! That's also why I stopped attending them.

7) Do you have any extreme hobbies (sky diving, bungee jumping, whitewater rafting, etc.)?

I've always wanted to go sky-diving or bungee-jumping. I'm afraid that ship has sailed, however.

8) Today is National Kool-Aid Day. Do you like to drink Kool-Aid or another child-oriented drink?

I can't believe I just read this article. I will say that nowhere in there did it clearly state that these guys willingly participated in the study. I mean, really: how many guys are likely to be thrilled with a bunch of people standing around and measuring "when it had been stretched as much as possible." And how does one determine "as much as possible" anyway? Going to go wash my brain now....

10) Tomorrow there will be a full moon. Do you believe the superstition that weird things happen on the night of the full moon?

...brain has been scrubbed. The full moon absolutely causes people to act weird. I know scientists have studied this too and come to a different conclusion, but I'm pretty sure nothing at all was "stretched as much as possible." Great, I need to wash my brain again, now. {{shudder}}
