1) In this song, Louis Armstrong calls his girl "baby." What's the last endearment someone used when speaking to you? 

Uhm. It was probably one of Beast's caregivers calling me "hon" or "sweetie." Or Beast, but I can't understand his words most of the time. Does Sparky calling me mom count?

2) He sings that losing his love made him cry. Do you cry easily? 

Not as much as I used to, but still more than "normal people" do apparently.

3) Louis was born in New Orleans, a city famous for music and cuisine. What's something you love about your home town? 

The town in which I was born is full of good history that I've only really learned once I moved far away. My current town (where I live) has a award-winning water-ski team. I mean, I really don't care, but we don't got much. Maybe the fact that Capone used to hang out here?

4) At age 11, Louis unwisely fired a pistol during a New Year's Eve celebration and was sentenced to 18 months in a juvenile detention facility. It was there that he met music teacher Peter Davis, who believed in Louis and taught him to play cornet and bugle. Tell us about someone who believed in you and made your life better. 

Ironically, this sounds like the sort of behavior that would fit right into my current town... Anyway, I have been blessed to be white in the U.S. and raised by and around people who thought I was amazing. My parents went without a lot of 'things' to make their kids' lives full of possibility. [I simply cannot imagine ANYONE in my pretty-much white town getting arrested for shooting a gun off]

5) Louis would say that arrest changed his life for the better because it was at the detention center that "me and music got married." After his release, he began playing on street corners, or in honkytonks ... any place he could hone his skills. What is something you have worked hard to be better at? 

I have been working hard all my adult life to be a better person, to be understanding and kind and useful. Often Sometimes it feels wholly futile, but I at least know I'm a better-rounded person than I was 25 years ago even if no one else agrees.

6) In the late 1920s, Louis led a jazz band called The Hot Five. His wife, Lil, believed he was too talented not to receive star billing. He just didn't feel ready. She went behind his back and convinced the management at Chicago's Dreamland Cafe to advertise: "The Hot Five, featuring Louis Armstrong: The World's Greatest Trumpet Player." It worked! At the end of the gig, Okeh Records signed him to a recording contract. Can you think of a time when, like Lil, you were glad you asked for forgiveness rather than permission? 

I have 100% started living this lately, mostly because I've learned not to worry so much about what others (those I don't care about) think. Do the thing, apologize later.

7) In 1932, the year this record was popular, the son of aviator Charles Lindbergh was kidnapped and killed. This famous case inspired Agatha Christie to write Murder on the Orient Express. Have you read the book? Seen the movie, the remake or the miniseries? 

I have read the book a few times. I think I've seen the movie? The old one, nothing made in the last 4 decades. 

8) Another aviator was in the news in 1932. Amelia Earhart flew 14 hours from Newfoundland to Londonderry. What is the longest flight you've ever taken? 

The longest single stint on an airplane were the trips to Germany, about 8 hours-ish. Mostly we were not staying in Germany, just changing planes to go on to somewhere else. Once to Rome. Once to Moscow. Once to Athens. Maybe elsewhere, I don't remember anymore.

9) Random question: You have the opportunity to travel safely in a time machine. Would you go back to the past, into the future, or say, "no thanks, I'll stay in 2022?"

What a quandary! Probably past, my my OWN past, just to visit, and only back to about 1980.

1) This is a sad song of farewell. Who is the last person you said "goodbye" or "so long" to?

Well, Beast earlier today when I left.

2) According to the 2000 Census, Massachusetts is the state with the largest percentage of residents of Irish descent. Have you ever been to The Bay State?

I have. I was absolutely STUNNED by the number of Dunkin Donuts outlets. Seems like there's one for each Irish family in the area!

3) "The wearing o' the green" is one way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Will you wear something green in honor of the day?

I am wearing a sort of tennis ball green shirt. I couldn't find anything properly green this morning when I got dressed. Besides, I went to the nursing home with two drive-thru fast-food stops on the way, so it's NBD.

4) What color makes you look best?

I've been told teal/turquoise is a good look for me.

5) Will you drink something green in honor of the day (like a Shamrock shake or a green beer)?

I don't drink green things ever. Yuck. I don't even like green tea that much.

6) A four-leaf clover is considered good luck. Do you have a lucky charm?

I don't really believe in lucky charms. I have some objects that make me feel happy when I'm around them: some earrings, some clothes, random rocks (I'm weird, ok) that sort of thing.

7) Though she's singing an Irish ballad, this week's featured artist, Joni James, is of Italian heritage. Can you think of a song as identified with Italy as "Danny Boy" is with Ireland?

Anything sung by Dean Martin, apparently, specifically "That's Amore." And "O Sole Mio."

8) Soda bread and potato bread are popular in Ireland. Are there any rolls or bread in your kitchen right now?

There's tortillas, bread and, bagels in the kitchen. I haven't had bagels in the house for weeks, which is totally weird for me. There's always bagels in my house!

9) Ireland is known for its whiskey. Do you enjoy Irish coffee (black coffee, whiskey and whipped cream)?

I don't like coffee, so...no. I'll take my whiskey straight, thanks.

1) Fastball is a trio from Austin, Texas. Austin is the capital of Texas. When you were in school, did you have to memorize the state capitals?

I didn't have to, but I did have them memorized by the time I was in 2nd grade. I still know most of 'em. It comes in handy periodically.

2) Have you ever visited your state's capital?

Yep. I was there in town about 18 months ago, and I saw the Capitol itself 19 years ago. I'm not going back till there are some grownups running the state. We've had nothing but NOTHING since our current governor was elected. The state is in SERIOUS financial trouble, and they are just diddling around, but getting paid. That needs to stop.

3) Fastball played dates throughout Canada this past spring. When did you last leave the US of A?

Last September we were in the U.K. for a family wedding.

4) Tony Scalzo is a founding member of Fastball. He's the singer in the video for this song, and that's his wife, Jennifer, playing the organizer of the speed-dating event. Have you ever gotten a job because you knew somebody?

That's kind of how I got the job I have now. Ah, the good old days of not posting jobs....never gonna happen nowadays. [insert current workplace griping and gossip here]

5) In this pitch to a perspective lover, he admits he doesn't have much money. Last time you went to the ATM, how much did you withdraw?

I always get $300. I use cash at Aldi's and most fast-food places, as well as haircuts and Walgreen's, etc., so I go through it in a couple of weeks.

6) He sings that at times, his mind is hazy. Do you have a good memory for names?

I'm great with names! I totally SUCK at faces and at matching names with the right faces. It's pathetic.

7) Fastball guitarist Miles Zuniga admits that he once had a crush on Carrie Fisher (aka Princess Leia). Tell us about one of your one-sided love affairs, either with a celebrity or someone you knew in real life.

Oh, I had it BAD for Andy Gibb back in the day (c. 1978). Giant poster of him shirtless on my wall. Remember this was the era of super-tight pants, too, so I'm actually surprised in hindsight at my parents' forbearance. It really was heartbreaking when he died, less than 10 years later.

8) Fastball's drummer Joey Shuffield is partial to drums from Pork Pie Percussion. This company was started by Bill Detamore, who began making drums as a hobby. Do you have any hobbies that, under the right circumstances, could make you money?

Nope. Well, I mean, I suppose if I was really motivated and needy, I could make money blogging or Facebooking, or reading (?), but then I'm not sure it would be fun anymore at that point.

9) The fast ball is the most common pitch in major league baseball. Now that the MLB season is past the halfway mark, how is your baseball team doing?

I don't have "a team." And shouldn't baseball season end (and start, for that matter), in warm temperatures by the way?? OK, that's just a tiny chip from the iceberg of disdain I feel about baseball. (Sorry, Gal--but fans are not part of the disdain, so ...)

The Greenish Questions

1. What is your current obsession?

Skittles. I've been pigging out on them for a couple of weeks, much to my scale's regret.

2. What’s your go-to coffee place?

I don't drink coffee.

3. Who was the last person that you hugged?

Beast.

4. Do you nap a lot?

Heh, yeah. As often as possible.

5. Tonight, what’s for dinner?

I hate you. This is what I'm trying to avoid thinking about right now. We may be looking at grilled cheese or waffles at this point.

6. What was the last thing that you bought?

Garage light bulbs, propane for the grill, and a toilet seat. Living the big life, eh?

7. What is your favorite weather?

Hot and dry, i.e. zero humidity.

8. Tell us something about one blogger who you think will play this week?

There are days, reading her blog, when I'm fairy certain that Kwizgiver and I are living alternate versions of each other's lives. If we looked more like each other, it would be fun to do twin-switch thing for a few days. :D

9. If you were given a free house that was full furnished, where in the world would you like it to be?

Normally, I would say Ouray, but with the health care situation in my family and this country, I'm going to say Hay-on-Wye on the Welsh/English border.

10. Name three things that you could not live without.

My prescription meds, my glasses, my car.

11. What would you like in your hands right now?

I can't think of a thing.

12. What’s one of your guilty pleasures?

Pottering around mindlessly online.

13. What would you change or eliminate about yourself?

I would learn some self-control over food!

I wanted to be a grocery store checker because of the old cash register buttons ... Clearly, I didn't really get out much.

Someone to clean and cook for me.

Burley Cross Postbox Theft, by Nicola Barker and Christmas Days, by Jeanette Winterson, the latter on my Nook. That's rather a low count for me.

Pain.

We saw Wonder Woman last week. It was pretty good (to be read deadpan).

19. What’s your favorite book from the past year?

The Home for Wayward Clocks, by Kathie Giorgio and All Our Wrong Todays, Elan Mastai were each good for very different reasons.

20. Is there a comfort food from your childhood that you still enjoy?

White bread and Smarties. Not together (yuck) but individually. I don't buy either very often. Oh, and Mom's oatmeal cookies, but I don't have her recipe, so finding cookies that live up to this is difficult.

The Random Questions, Part 683

1. How old do you look?

I'd say overall I look my age. As to whether I act my age, well, that's more debatable.

2. Where do you live?

In a house in the middle of the North American continent.

3. Are you waiting for something?

Not exactly. I'm just trying to get through the drama of each day without creating any more of it than necessary.

4. What’s one pet peeve of yours that is not common?

It makes me crazy when people say "jew-luh-ree" which seems to be something most people don't even notice.

5. Do you want/have kids?

I have one absolutely delightful 24-year-old son.

6. Have you ever thought about converting your religion?

I've had moments of seriously wondering if I should walk away from so-called "organized religion" for multiple reasons, but it's rarely been about the structure of the worship. It's almost always other people and my own feelings about/relationship with God.

7. Last shocking news you heard?

Apparently a house blew up early this morning in a town about 20 miles south of us. I found out because several friends in the town where I work (about 7 miles closer than we are) felt the ground shake. That's all pretty weird.

8. What was the last thing you drank?

I know this will come as a surprise, but I'm on my second diet Dr. Pepper of the day.

9. Who do you most look like in your family?

Two of my sisters and I took strongly after our dad and grandma (his mom). The other two kids went to the other side of the family for genes.

10. If you could have something right now, anything, what would it be?

Energy.

11. Where does most of your family live?

Hah! I guess the majority is in the "midwest" U.S. depending on your definition of that term: but we're in Tennessee and Colorado and Texas, and England, too.

12. Where did you grow up?

In Colorado.

13. Where do you want to go on vacation?

I'm not fussy. This year, I'm not exactly sure there's a vacation going to happen. Beast certainly cannot travel as things stand now.

14. Have you ever had a panic attack?

Yes, I've been introduced to these over the last year or so. Surprisingly, when things REALLY hit the shitter last summer, the panic attacks subsided a bit. So, that was weird.

15. What can’t you wait for?

...still nothing.

16. When’s the last time you told someone you loved him or her and meant it?

About ten minutes ago.

17. Have your parents ever smoked pot?

I have no idea if they did. Probably not though--they were pretty straight arrow. I can count on one finger the number of times I saw my mom drink booze.

18. Want someone back in your life?

Of course. At this point in my life, my parents and two siblings are gone. I'd take any of them back.

19. What do you order at the bar?

Vodka tonic with a lime twist.

20. When was the last time you cried really, really hard?

When Beast was at the ER a couple of weeks ago. Again.

21. What are your nicknames?

Believe it or not, Cat is not my given name. Nor is it anything even close to my real name.

22. What is your favorite thing to eat with peanut butter?

Honey, on tortillas.

23. Where were you on July 4th, 2008?

According to my old blog, my sister Jean was recovering from brain surgery, and my mom had fallen and whacked her head, but things in my immediate vicinity seem to have been fine.

24. If you could go fo[r]ward in time, how far forward would you go?

Not far, maybe a decade or two. Would like to see Sparky as a middle-aged dude.

25. If you could go back in time, how far back would you go?

Not far, back to when my parents were dating. It would be fun to watch them as kids.

I did.

Hell no! I mean...yeah, no.

I mostly walked. Occasionally, there was a friend with a ride on the way TO school, occasionally another friend could bring me home. I mostly remember walking home from school, dropping my stuff and then walking another half hour to work till we closed at 9.

4. What kind of car did you have?

Hah! I had my parents' cars.

5. What kind of car do you have now?

I drive a 2011 (?) dark blue Ford Edge

6. Its Friday night...where are you now?

At a 12-Step meeting, or asleep in bed.

7. It is Friday night...where were you then?

Watching TV or reading.

8. What kind of job did you have in high school?

I worked (wait for it) at the library as a shelver.

9. What kind of job do you do now?

I work in a library as a cataloger. So, slight elevation in job duties, though I do some shelving these days too.

10. Were you a party animal?

Uhm, NO!

11. Were you considered a flirt?

I'm not even sure I was considered at all, but definitely NOT a flirt.

12. Were you in band, orchestra, or choir?

I was 100% band nerd.

13. Were you a nerd?

Yup. A nerd, a grind, a brain, whatever.

14. Did you get suspended from school?

That would have caused me to be murdered at home. Or so I feared.

Yes, I can. I later went to school in the state where the tune to my high school song was written, so I still know it pretty well.

Ms. Philippe, Mr. Graebner, Dr. G. are the ones that spring to mind directly.

17. Where did you sit during lunch?

By the windows in the cafeteria. Same place I took the SAT.

18. What was your school's full name?

I think I'll pass on this except to say it was just the city's name. Nothing exciting.

19. Where did you party the most?

At Warren's house.

20. What was your school mascot?

In the midst of the center of the continent, we were the Pirates, fer cryin' out loud.

21. Would you do it again?

High school? Parts of it were great. Most of it was horrible or at least boring.

I didn't go.

Nope. If there were one this year (it's 35 years I just realized) I wouldn't be able to. Not sure what'll be happening five years from now.

The Getting to Know You Questions

1. What is your occupation right now? How long have you been there?

I've been a librarian for almost exactly 29 years (I started my first full time job in June of 1988). The job I'm at now is my second full-time gig, second job so to speak.

2. Favorite rock band. Ever.

The one I go back to most often is The Beat--usually The English Beat here. They just make me happy.

3. What are you listening to right now?

We're catching up on last night's SNL. I love Melissa McCarthy so much.

4. Last person you spoke to on the phone. What was it about?

Sparky called me this morning to wish me happy Mom's Day.

5. How old are you today? Or make up a question. This one bites.

I'm 53.5 + two days. Friday was my mother-in-law's birthday.

6. What is your favorite sport to watch on TV?

Football. This probably comes as a huge shock to everyone.

7. What is your favorite drink?

This is probably going to be an even bigger shock: diet Dr. Pepper.

8. Have you ever dyed your hair?

I did for about 10 years when it first started to get gray streaks. Once it seemed like it was less streaky, I stopped. I was still in my 40s, but at this point people describe me as "that gray-haired woman at the library"--and I'm not EVEN the oldest person there! I'm considering doing something like green or blue though.

9. Favorite food?

Carbs: sugar, bread, pasta. All the carbs!

10. What is the last movie you watched?

At the theater is was La-La Land. I really want to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but I'm not sure how that's going to happen unless I go alone. Beast isn't doing well.

11. Favorite day of the year?

I love days like today: 65-70 degree temps, no humidity, sun. I also really enjoy [School] Project judging day. And Thanksgiving.

12. How do you vent anger?

I talk. It's not the best possible way. I've also been known to shout (ahem) and/or cry, but I do that less these days as, apparently, it scares the shit out of my coworkers and causes me to get bad performance reviews. Now that I have becoming emo-free* at work, I'm back to my usual levels on reviews.

13. What was your favorite toy as a child?

Depends on the age. My jumprope, jacks, toy cars, and various dolls are probably up there, as are the many many library books I read.

14. Living arrangements? (Of course your pets count. Geez!)

I live with Beast and Pintobean. One is a human male, one is a male guinea-pig.

15. What was the last thing that you cried about?

I got a little teary with the African kids that came and sang at our church last week. But see * for why I don't really cry as much as I used to.

16. Who is the friend you have had the longest?

I'm friends with someone who went to the same babysitter after school as I did in the 70s. She's a couple of years older than me, but that matter way more in 1972 than it does now!

17. What did you do last night?

Caught up on DVR'd TV shows and played games on the laptop. And watched a race, including a really fucking scary wreck. By rights, several of the drivers should have been permanently incapacitated. Sounds like they are all walking away, more or less.

18. What are you most afraid of?

Pain.

19. In how many areas of your country have you lived? What's your favorite?

I've lived in the midwest my entire life, either the far Western part or the middle/northern part. I like Colorado best.

20. What is your favorite flower? (Ugh. Quite the note to go out on. But hell, we steal the questions. I guess you get what you pay for.)

Home-grown heirloom roses. But I'm not fussy; just don't bring white lilies!

The Cannon Fodder Questions

1. Is there someone you'd like to be kissing right now?

I actually did just kiss Beast before I sat down. He's having a crabby day, and as I type this he's taking his next round of mega-painkillers. That should help, but it also means he'll probably be asleep in half an hour or so.

2. When you're being extremely quiet, what does it mean?

It either means I'm concentrating on something or I'm really fucking pissed at you. Or I'm asleep.

3. What are you listening to right now?

The TV is on--Men Turning Left in Texas--so I hear car engines and the guys talking. The front door is open so I also hear birds and random people noise from outside. And I'm doing laundry, so the ejector pump just came on.

4. Are you a big fan of thunderstorms?

I am not afraid of thunder. I'm not a fan of lightning, however.

5. Do you believe in perfect?

Not in this world, nope.

6. Are you a jealous person?

Heh. No.

7. What was the first thing you thought this morning?

"Ugh. How many times can I hit 'snooze'?" Pretty much the same every day.

8. What do you think about when you are falling asleep?

As little as possible. I focus on breathing--a CPAP helps with that--and if I can't shut my brain off, I sing "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall" in my head.

9. Are you satisfied with what you have in life?

Yes.

10. Do people ever think that you're either older or younger than you actually are?

I have no idea. My hair color indicates my age pretty accurately however: dark brown turning gray.

11. Do you think men truly understand women?

I'm not even convinced this is a thing, but see question #2. I think it's just that men aren't really conditioned or expected to try to understand others.

12. How about women understanding men?

I think for the most part, yeah, we girls have got your number, guys. Of course, we're also often self-delusional about you-all.

13. Did anybody ever call you handsome or beautiful?

Ha ha ha ha ha.

14. What is one fact about the last person that called you?

The last person who called me is one of those people who will be late to her own funeral.

15. Other than your current one, tell us about the longest relationship you have had either a romance or a particular good friend.

I have friends from, literally, 45 years ago. What do you want to know about them? I know quite a lot of dirt, especially on one of the two people I'm thinking of.

The Sassy Questions

1. If you could say anything you wanted to say to Donald Trump, what would you say?

Words would fail to express my thoughts to him accurately, or appropriately. Can I just throw up on his (not-made-in-America) ugly-ass tie?

2. If you had to be the mother of Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan, who would you choose and why?

That's an interesting question. I think Britney would, these days, be a lot calmer to hang out with. I've never really cared for Lindsay, even before she went off the deep end.

3. You get to be Queen for a day. The kids are all taken care of, and you can spend as much money as you want. What do you do all day?

There's not a lot of stuff I can think of that only lasts a day. Maybe going up in a private jet and flying around in 100% cushiness?

4. Is there a song that brings tears to your eyes every time you hear it? If so, which one?

There are some hymns at church that remind me of specific people every time I hear them. "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" is one of them. "Morning Has Broken" is another. The Bach organ toccata that is often used in old horror flicks is on my list too, though not because of movies.

5. A fairy taps you on the shoulder and tells you that you can either have a perfect face or a perfect body for the rest of your life. Which do you choose?

Body. If "perfect" means no breaking, no illness, and no pain, I'm in!

6. If you could live any place in the world and money was no object, where would you live and why?

More and more my answer is "not in this country." I've seriously considered looking for a job in England. It's just that a) I'm too lazy to do that, and b) public libraries there are in even worse shape than here.

7. What is your biggest regret in life?

Not learning to fly a plane.

8. If you could go back and visit one person in your life who is now dead, and ask one question, what would that question be and why would you ask it?

I'd love to spend some quality time with all three of the grandparents who were alive when I was born. They all died within the next 10-11 years and I have almost no real memories of them at all.

9. If you had the choice to age forward (like we are now) or aging backwards (think Benjamin Buttons) which would you choose and why?

I'm okay with the way time works. I'm too tired right now to think about aging backwards.

10. What will the epitaph on your headstone say?

Funny you should ask. I told Beast this morning--after he read a headline in overnight news to me--that I want "I HATE PEOPLE!" on my tombstone. I've been saying it almost non-stop since January 20.

Couple of bottles of pop, a candy bar, and a big bag of Cheetos.

My son.

Of late, it's been either a chicken Caesar salad or a grilled chicken sandwich. Unless it's breakfast in which case the call is for bacon and an English muffin with honey.

The last one I finished is Just My Luck; I won it in a book giveaway from GoodReads.

6. DESCRIBE YOUR FAVORITE PAIR OF UNDERWEAR?

I have a couple of pair of VS boy-shorts that are super comfy. Actually, everything from there is super comfy. I'd link but the chick wearing the ones I like somehow "forgot" her bra ...sigh.

7. DESCRIBE THE LAST TIME YOU WERE INJURED.

I pinched the outside of my hand in a folding door yesterday. Somehow the thumb on my other hand is very sore today too, though I don't know why. I get hurt pretty much daily, but in little ways mostly.

8. ROCK CONCERT OR SYMPHONY? LAST SEEN?

The last music event I saw was probably at church, so more likely to be nearer the classical end of the scale than rock.

9. IF SOMEONE WERE TO BUY YOU A GIFT, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE IT TO BE?

I don't need anything right now. Maybe some energy and productivity.

10. WHAT TYPE OF SHIRT DO YOU BEST IN?

I live in T-shirts of various types.

I have not been to Berlin. I would like to visit some of the historical sites there, but I'm not sure when that's on the agenda at this point. I've been to SoCal several times. There's a lot to see. I'd happily force myself to live in or near San Diego. Beautiful city.

6) Lead singer Terri Nunn has a weekly radio show, Unbound on KCSN. How often do you listen to the radio? Do you tune in for music, comedy, news or talk?

I listen to Sirius XM if I have the radio on, but that's rare. I mostly listen to audiobooks or silence or Spotify.

I don't these days, no. I watched so many when Sparky was little that I think I'm covered until the appearance of any grandchildren.

I read the first book. OMG so much drama and stupidity and poor writing!

Hell no! i worked yesterday. Had I not worked, I would have been right here at home all day.

2) Feasting and football are also popular Thanksgiving weekend pastimes. Do your Thursday-Sunday plans include pigging out or watching a game?

Did both on Thursday. All the games were teams I didn't care about at all. I will probably do more eating today and tomorrow, but I think I'm footballed out. Sparky and I may go to a movie this afternoon.

3) At Thanksgiving dinners, Crazy Sam's homemade gravy is always a hit. (Probably because she's so generous with the cognac, which gives the gravy a nutty taste.) What was particularly delicious at your Thanksgiving table?

Our turkey always turns out well. The mashed potatoes generally turn out well, and we make plenty.

Probably Kohl's. I am tired of my clothes.

Not particularly. I mean, certain articles make me feel better but it's not the color it's the associations I have with them.

1. Are there any men or women in blue on your family tree?

My brother was a police officer briefly. I have photos of him in uniform, but otherwise you wouldn't know. He switched to EMT/Fire fairly quickly. Probably the best call of his life. Weirdly, his son has always wanted to be a cop; he's currently working for TSA. Does that count as police?

2. Are you someone who suffers from the Sunday night blues? What helps you get over it?

No. I like my job, and weekends being the way they've been over the past few years, I usually can't wait to get out of the house Monday morning.

3. I read the color blue is an appetite suppressant since there are very few naturally blue foods out there. How do you feel about blue cheese? Love it or blech? If you're a fan, what's something you like that's made with blue cheese?

I like bleu cheese just fine, though with other food, not alone. Bleu cheese dressing is my favorite salad topper.

Diligence will not stop rain from falling or bullets from killing people. Working to help flood victims or victims of violence in a diligent manner is possible, just hard work doesn't always achieve everything. It's one of the fallacies that arrives all boxed up as LIES THE WORLD TOLD ME at about midlife when you realize you can't postpone death forever.

6. The National Park Service turned 100 years old on August 25th. Have you been to many of America's National Parks? If so share with us a favorite or two. Which National Park would you most like to visit before the next birthday rolls around?

I have been to several; in fact, I now have a passport. In the past year, I've been to the Abraham Lincoln Home and El Morro in San Juan. Of course, I've also been to Yellowstone and Little Bighorn and Rushmore; of those three, I can't recommend highly enough a lengthy stop at Little Bighorn. My favorite part is Mesa Verde, where I've visited a dozen times. I love climbing around there. I'm not likely to see any more U.S. Parks this year; it's possible we'll drive through Brecon Beacons while on vacation next month.

1) What hurts Sam the most is her sole, since she just found that earring she thought was lost by stepping on it with her bare foot. How about you? Any aches and pains to report?

I have a couple of weird bruises on my feet, noticed this morning. I know where they came from--one's from a badly-placed toe-ring, the other is from 'falling off' my (flat) sandals yesterday--but they are in truly weird places. Also, I've got a headache. Probably allergies, but I seem to have developed a minor cold so it could be that as well. Otherwise, and compared to Beast, my health is rosy.

2) What's the last thing you misplaced? Did you find it?

I'm pretty sure my brain fell out somewhere yesterday afternoon. The jury's still out on whether it's back or not. I can't think of anything major I've misplaced recently, though. Oh, we still have no idea where my file for my birth certificates is. Or if we even have any. I need to contact Vital Stats in Colorado and order some more.

3) Lead singer Gary LeVox sings that he's not afraid to cry. When is the last time you shed a tear?

I've been yawning so hard the last week--probably allergy-related--that my eyes water in defense, so there's that. Otherwise...I'm not sure. I didn't cry at meeting last night, which is rare. I'm sure there were tears at some point earlier in the week; it's rare for me to go a week without crying about something.

4) Gary auditioned for another country group, Little Big Town, but didn't get in. Considering how successful Rascal Flatts has been, he's probably not sorry. Tell us about something you thought you wanted, but later weren't so sure.

I can't think of anything major. There's always a small sense of 'buyer's remorse' at some point after achieving or getting something. I mean, how many parents haven't wondered why in the hell they reproduced at certain moments of their child's life? Or why we wanted a pet after having to clean up the 53rd mess today? Or that outfit that fell apart the first time you wore it?

Gil Grissom holds a very special place in my heart, though he's not technically a detective. So the backup is Olivia Benson, who is my hero.

I'm not going to a wine festival unless I go there without Beast. The other two I would only be involved in if I had a great hotel room overlooking the festivities; I have no interest in participating in either.

I see nothing but clouds this not-so-fine Saturday. The sky, she be white.

Not much, aside from not having a ton of stuff to do: some laundry, a grocery-shopping trip later, and I'm sure there's NASCAR or something involved cars going fast.

I had a couple of dreamlike, just-about-perfect-in-every-way days on the cruise.

4) The members of the group, American Authors, met in college. When is the last time you heard from a school chum? Do you know them from grammar school, high school or college?

I've been talking to a friend from my single-digit years who went to the same after-school babysitter with me back then. It's quite weird that I have literally known her longer than anyone on Facebook aside from family, 46 years. I have another friend from almost as long ago who was my bestie in junior high and high school--though to be clear I met her when we were 6--and then quite a few people from elementary school on through graduate school.

5) One of the all-time best-selling American authors is romance writer Danielle Steele. She's been writing for more than 40 years and has sold more than 800 million books. Have you read any of her work?

I read Palomino in my mom's Good Housekeeping. That was her first book, I think, and as a young teen it was SOOO VERY roMANTic and heartstopping. I loved it. Then I glanced through her books once I started the librarian gig and was professionally appalled at them. Eventually, about 15 years ago, I decided to read whatever one was coming out just to say I'd read a recent one.O . M . G . L'horreur!

6) Have you ever dreamed of being an author?

All the time. Still do. If I'm gonna do it, I should just do it. But I'm terrified because of all the really good books I've read. I don't want to suck.

7) Do you have an e-reader?

I do. It's currently charging. I finished Tami Hoag's latest this morning--really good by the way!

8) American Authors rang in 2016 in Chicago, giving an outdoor concert on New Year's Eve on a stage not far from Lake Michigan. There are 5 Great Lakes in all,including Lake Michigan. Without looking it up, name the other 4.

9) Random question: You see photos on Facebook of a dinner party hosted by a friend. You recognize most of the attendees, yet you weren't invited. How do you feel? Left out and angry? Do you wonder what you may have done to offend your friend? Or do you just forget about it and move on?

I'd probably wonder why I wasn't included, but it does sort of depend on the occasion and how close a friend we're talking about. If it were a (for instance) apparently church-wide event at church, I'd be very hurt. If it were a birthday party or something at someone's home...meh, that's fine. I'd miss the cake, but I'm not going to be all pouty about it. Generally, I think I would try to forget I saw the pictures and move on.

1) This song is all about memories. How far back can you remember? What's your earliest memory?

I can remember bits and pieces back to age 3 or so. I have a very very vivid memory of a dream I had before I turned 5. I know it was then because we got new living room furniture when I was just about 5 and the dream took place amid OLD living room furniture. I remembered the dream after I had it but couldn't figure it out until a few years later looking at old photos and recognizing the furniture from my dream!

2) The first line is "Good morning, yesterday." What do you remember about yesterday morning?

Fridays I need to be at work by 8, so I'm up an hour earlier than usual and I'd had two short nights in a row. I'm still tired. Otherwise, it was a normal morning for all intents and purposes.

3) This song was originally a 60-second jingle, featured in a commercial for Kodak film. Do you ever use film? Or are all your pictures digital?

Never use it anymore. Still have lots and lots of non-digital photos though.

4) Who took the most recent photo of you?

I have no idea. Probably Beast, unless it was at work.

I like Law & Order in various incarnations, yes.

I do not. I consider it a giant waste of my time. Note that I said "my" time. What others do with their time doesn't have to make sense to me.

7) This year Paul Anka performed throughout Florida (Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Clearwater and Fort Myers). The Sunshine State is a popular vacation destination. Do you have a favorite spot in Florida?

I do not. I've been there once--when Sparky was three, to Orlando, guess why--and was not enthralled. Laura Ingalls Wilder was not a fan, however, and that's good enough for me. I'm not a waterbug, so the ocean doesn't hold a lot of attraction to me.

8) In 1976, the year this song was on the charts, an earthquake hit China. Have you ever experienced an earthquake?

Yes I have. I grew up in Colorado, and there are occasional temblors there, though nothing very major at all. There've been a few here where I live now, but again, nothing worth getting worked up about. It's a a very strange feeling: either you don't feel anything but may notice things moving around the room, or you feel/hear some weird noises and bumping, like a car wreck outside.

9) Random question: Do you know CPR?

I just got recertified last summer. Never had to use it. Hope I never do. I pretty much get certified as insurance so I don't need it. They do a quick re-education on AEDs now with CPR classes, and I am much more likely to use that, to be honest.

Laundry Day Meme

Do you know any couples that have been married for a very long time?

Huh. Well. My parents, technically, have been married since 1941, but since they're both deceased... My oldest sister has been married since 1966. I know people who got married in the 1950s. I've been married since 1986.
Here's the takeaway, though: staying married means nothing if it's only because of inertia and fear. Having a years-long relationship is important, but it doesn't have to be a marriage. A good friendship is at least equally as important, someone who knows you when you were just starting to become You. THAT's important.

What are you tired of people telling you?

I'm tired of hearing "shut up!" from the universe at large, but that's because I keep not doing it. Actual, individual things I'm tired of involve the endless library/ian comments and the word, "Sorry." I'm really fucking tired of "Sorry." Don't apologize (again), just STOP DOING IT!

Which type of ice cream do you prefer?

My gut reaction was to say 'home-made' but I'll go with vanilla with my choice of toppings.

Do you have a little sister? What’s her name?

I am the little sister!! I do, however, have a couple of nieces less than 10 years younger than me who sort of fulfilled that purpose in my childhood. Lots of the same perks, less of the concurrent abhorrence. The oldest one turned 47 on Friday; the younger one turned 44 a couple of weeks ago.

What was the last movie you watched on TV?

It didn't make much of an impression as I don't honestly remember. I'm just awful at remembering movies....

If the internet was not available right now, what would you do instead?

What I should be doing even though the 'net is fine: READING! I've got two seriously overdue books that are nowhere near being finished.

Do you complain a lot?

More than I should, for sure.

At this point, if I said "Star Wars," that would include almost everyone (mostly white people) in Hollywood, wouldn't it? ;)

Temple I suspect a haunted house would have a terminal case of dustiness, and that doesn't sound fun to me.

Huh. The first time I got blackout-drunk with the vomits it was on cheap champagne (13 glasses in half an hour--dumbass). Ruined the cheap stuff forever. I do like a good Dom, but it has to be pricey. It's really the only thing I'm fussy about in terms of taste.

Are there any seashells in your room?

There are!

What was the reason for the last time you went outside?

I was checking to see what Beast was doing that involved thumping and banging near the front porch. The answer: breaking up ice.

Do you like fruity or minty gum?

Minty is preferred.

Are you looking forward to any day of this month?

Tuesday is Groundhog Day, which is a BFD around here. Wednesday is Sparky's birthday. Valentine's Day is approaching. I don't know if I'm really "looking forward" to all of those, but they do mean that winter is closer to ending.

What was the last graduation you attended?

Sparky's, last May. Coldest freakin' day of the month, which was the exact opposite of Beast's and my graduation 30 years ago when it was the hottest freakin' day of the month.

Do you rummage through the $5 movie bin at Walmart every time?

Nope.

What day of the week do you usually do laundry?

Saturday. Though I've got a couple of loads going today to finish up yesterday's work.

Do you like using air fresheners?

I've had the same can in the powder room for 15 years. So, I don't go through much of it, no.

Are your nails ever painted red?

Sometimes. I think this summer is going to bring a whole new palette of colors. My nail polish is pretty old.

When you were a baby, did you have a favorite blanket?

Probably. It never turned into a 'thing' though.

Ever been on a cruise?

Nope. Well, dinner cruises a couple of times, but not real ones.

Would you rather go to Alaska or Russia?

Russia!! I would LOVE to visit St. Petersburg in the summer, and also Irkutsk.

1. How would you describe your sense of direction?

   If I don't know where I am in a general sense, I'm screwed. I mean, when I grew up there were clear, geographical markers for the directions. Here...it's flat and featureless all around. I mean, this time of year, the sun and moon don't even really rise in the east; it's more like ESE, so that screws everything else up. smh I gotta get back to mountains...

2. Whose sense of humor is most like yours?

   I don't think anyone gets my weirdness completely. Even I don't get why I'm laughing sometimes. Beast probably is closest to the same wavelength, and T at work. And Amy.

3. What film’s or novel’s sense of place really impressed you?

   If you haven't read Kent Haruf's books about Holt, Colorado, then you haven't read a book that is place-contingent. That town is seriously REAL. Also, the Laura Ingalls Wilder books--her descriptions of the prairies is stunning and skillful. Oh, and another is Wuthering Heights--Emily got the moors down solidly....brrrr. Nevada Barr's books are good at this aspect of writing too.

4. When did you most recently and accurately sense danger?

   I nearly plowed into someone tonight driving to a meeting. Stupid, totally my fault, inattentiveness. Weirdly, I didn't really freak out about it in the "DANGER DANGER" sense, just pulled away no harm - no foul. Do you like to see it snowing outside?

If I don't have to go outside and drive anywhere for a few days, I do like to watch snow falling. If there will be driving, I just start worrying about that.

Do you tell your family you love them enough?

I tell them whenever I see them. I mean Beast and Sparky. My family of origin doesn't do the "love" thing unless things are in dire straits. Beast's family is better at that, but we don't see them often anymore.

Do you like getting jewelry or do you not wear any?

I like earrings; I wear them pretty much every day, and I have TONS. I'm not really into expensive jewelry, but I have a couple of pricey rings and necklaces. I don't wear a lot of necklaces--I tend to forget to grab one.

Do you watch a lot of NFL football?

I do. It's on right now, in fact, as I write this, gearing up for the Pats/Broncos game.

Have you ever used the word ‘lame’?

I don't use it much. The way people feel about the word 'retarded' is kind of the way I feel about 'lame.' Maybe I've just known more people with physical disabilities than mental disabilities? I don't know, but 'lame' feels rude.

Are you/Were you in a band? If so, what was your band name?

I was in marching band. There's just not a great big push for flute players in rock bands, Jethro Tull and Chicago excluded.

When is the last time you went to the doctor?

Nag nag nag! Jeez! I'm going Wednesday, OK? Jeez. lol

Hmm. I don't think so, not anymore. I certainly used to! Might have to remedy that one of these days.

Would you ever go to Japan?

If you paid for it, and I could fly first class, then I would.

What was the last thing you went to Walmart for?

I don't remember. Maybe pillows, and then a random-grab lunch from the deli and pop cooler.

Ever gotten in a car accident?

Uh, yeah. Probably 5 or 6. Thankfully, nothing very exciting or dangerous.

Yes.

I have hazel eyes. I've always wished they were more green, or at least green more often. But I'm not fussed enough to spend time on it these days.

When was the last time you went ice skating?

I believe I was approximately 13. That makes it pretty close to 4 decades.

Do you like to brush your teeth?

Do I like to? Well, I don't hate it...it doesn't hurt or anything, and it's necessary. This is a little like asking whether I like brushing my hair....

Have you ever had a surgery?

Yup. Couple of times. Anesthesia is weird.

I think I look pretty much my actual age. I might not act like it, though. ;-)

When is the next time you’ll be up on stage?

I think I'm liturgist next weekend. Does that count?

Where did you spend your last birthday?

I think I worked. If not I was right here on the couch probably doing something like this, or reading.

What is the last show that you watched a full episode of?

We watched Property Brothers all afternoon and evening yesterday. No breaks. It was ... weird and not what I would have preferred but I didn't have the remote.

Do you know anyone who lives in Utah?

Wow. Random. I don't think so? My sister lives about 90 miles from Utah for half of the year, but I don't think anyone else I know is there. If so, they're keeping shtum.

Is there anything you need to work on doing soon?

There are plenty of things I need to deal with, including laundry, serious house-cleaning, and figuring out vacations. And losing weight. Always.

Do your feelings get hurt easily?

It depends. Sometimes, with some people, I seem primed to take things all wrong. Most of the time, shit runs right off me.

Do you, or do you know someone who has taken karate lessons?

Sparky took tai kwon do for a year or so when he was a kid. He wasn't great, but he liked watching himself in the mirrors. ;-)

Were you ever a boy or girl scout?

I was a Girl Scout for a couple of years in grade school. It was fun, but I never did any of the camping or whatever. And I sucked at selling cookies.

25. List 3 activities that you can only enjoy by yourself.

Everything I keep thinking of I think of a reason that it wouldn't be bad with others. Seriously, the only thing I can think of is going to the bathroom, which--if you've ever had a toddler in your life 24/7--is actually something worth looking forward to. Anyway, other options I came up with and discarded are napping, reading, etc.

27. How do you like being roused in the morning?

I don't. There's no good way, there are only less-annoying ways.

It's only 2:50! OK, granted it looks like it's nearly sunset because it's so stinkin' foggy again today... I was at church by 7, taught Sunday School, went to the worship service, came home, started laundry--I think we need a new washer, yay, not--ran to the mini-mart for milk for mac-n-cheese tonight...this. I'm going to be napping sometime soon. And there's a memorial service for the mom of a friend tonight that I should go to, but I really feel lousy. We'll see.

The last PM I sent Sparky was "np" last night. The last text message was probably to Chris yesterday telling her I would be late for our meetup. And the last GChat was "In case ur awake....omw home" to Beast yesterday afternoon.

Sometimes. Not always.

Pepper. Yes, that's her real name--well, I mean, that's the name she goes by not something I made up.

I shudder to think...!

Autumn. If it's summer in the mountains, then summer. If it's humid...shoot me.

Oh, no. Uh-uh, you are NOT going to get me telling people what everyone should be like. All people should be who they were created to be, which may (and does) end up being irritating and inconvenient an awful lot of the time.

36. If you could have a large collection of one item, what would that item be?

I have an awful lot of books, and slightly fewer S&Ps. I'd like a large collection of chores completed, but that's not likely.

37. What have you been thinking about lately?

Beast's shoulder/spine. How much and how badly I need to lose a lot of weight. How absolutely exhausted I am all the time--I'm sure this is due to a medication swap a couple of weeks ago. How we are the only house in our neighborhood with no holiday decor in sight. A friend's son who nearly died last weekend. You know, the usual stuff.

38. What is the secret to a happy life?

Lowered expectations of others, reasonable expectations of yourself, and chocolate.

"Really?" "Hey..." "...just..." "I'm sorry, what?"

Iced sugar cookies.

That we could all just get over our egos and accept ourselves and others as they are, not how we think they should be.

Something horrible happening to Sparky. Large, unruly crowds. Active shooters in the workplace. A long lingering death.

A picture of a local landmark? No, actually, I think it was probably the gun violence chart for last night's Facebook post. Last week's stats: 455 incidents, 122 of which had 0 injuries. 130 people died. 284 were injured.

Babies. Love lighting up faces. Ouray.

I like it. My stomach, however, no longer tolerates it well.

I'm usually ensconced on the sofa between laundry loads. Often, we're watching college football or NASCAR. It's a weird time of year so today we've got on DIY Network. I just got home from a meeting and shopping excursion. First Xmas gifts purchased!

2) The lyrics tell us his friends know something up with Chuck E because he's even combed his hair. So here's a question about your hair: do you usually use a blow dryer or let it air dry?

I'd say the majority of the time, if I'm leaving the house, I blow it out. But not always.

3) In this song, Ricki Lee sings that she spotted Chuck E. at the Pantages, a grand old Los Angeles theater. Nearly 100 years old, the Pantages was originally a movie palace and was renovated in the 1980s for concerts and theatrical productions. Tell us about a cool landmark in your town.

The town where I work has a lovely Square around which I walked today and stopped and bought some books.

Yup. It's long-ago recovered however.

Sarah, at work. Neck tats, 5-inch heels, goth to steampunk to 40s fashion, green or red or orange hair....I'm hoping I can convince her to work Tech Service with me. She bakes, she sews, she hates children, and I'm not sure she's interested in EVER getting married. Hell, I'm not even sure she's cis! She is, however, very cool. And quiet, and sensible.

8) 1979 was a good year for Rickie Lee, what with her big hit record and the Rolling Stone covers. But it was a terrible year for The Who, because eleven of their fans died during an Ohio concert. What's your favorite Who song?

It's emphatically NOT "Eminence Front" because that one was played over and over and over on the jukebox in the burger joint on campus in college. OhmyGAWDD, I still have flashbacks! I like "Pinball Wizard" and "My Generation" all right though. To be honest though, I'm not a huge fan of the group except in a general sense, and because of the use of their songs in the CSI shows.

9) Rickie Lee moved to New Orleans, a city she fell in love with after a visit. Have you ever gone to a vacation spot and wished you could just stay there forever?

Quite often. I love traveling, and often fall in love with locations. Part of the fun I have in traveling is picturing myself as a 'local' while wandering around.
