Learning
- How and when did you learn to swim?
- How and when did you learn to drive?
- How and when did you learn to tie your shoelaces?
- How and when did you learn to cook?
- How and when did you learn to type?
I had to pass a swimming test to graduate from high school which meant swiming a length of the pool. I was going to graduate as one of the top 5 students in my class and they had to pass me, so they let me face-float and flail my way across the short length of the pool. I still can't really swim. But I will always be grateful to Beth, who patiently worked with me to teach me the bare minimum.
I took Driver's Ed when I was 15, and I had about 30 seconds of driving with a (very very creepy) instructor. Really, my dad taught me to drive for all intents and purposes.
I was in preschool (Maggie Martin) and Could NOT figure them out...and then suddenly I could. I just remember spending hours on it, watched by some boy I now know had a crush on me. At the time, I was just annoyed that he wouldn't go away so I could sort out this complicated shoe-tying thing!!
Define "cook." I don't think I'm a great cook now, but I can find my way around a kitchen. As a child, I had a couple of cookbooks, and I remember being all excited about making homemade pancakes and waffles for breakfast on Sunday mornings a few times. I've made homemade cakes since I was about 10, and cookies. Mom taught me the basics of potato peeling and food prep. It's just sort of something I learned to do as a matter of course, I guess.
I took typing my sophomore year in high school, but I'd been doing the hunt-and-peck thing before that for awhile. I rocked the typing class and never looked back. ;-) It motivated me to know that my mom could type about 75 wpm error-free at work. Who, me? Competitive?? hah

Thursday Threesome
::-A--B--C-::
Onesome: A--ny place but here? Are travel plans looming for Spring break? ...or are you staying home?
We may travel. It's up in the air like so many things. If we do, we'll be headed east to visit Beast's parents, and maybe stop somewhere on the way for a couple of days.Twosome: B--etter to look in the mirror before you leave? Have you ever discovered (say around mid-day) that your clothes really didn't match up?
Yes. And I've grabbed a blue shoe to go with a black shoe a couple of times when I was wearing snow boots and carrying shoes in a bag so I could change later.Threesome: C--atch any good movies lately? What should we go see now that the Oscar's are done and over for another year?
I'm precisely the wrong person to ask this, as I haven't seen a movie in a theatre since last August.

Monday's a Bitch
Random Joy
1. Did you watch the Oscars last night? What did you think of them?
Nope; I was at a concert. Sounds like I didn't miss much, except for Gary Busey being a jerk on the red carpet. As usual. How does he keep getting invites to things??2. Have you ever called in sick to work when you weren't really sick? What did you spend the day doing instead?
I take my share of mental health days, during which I watch TV, read and/or nap. I've also gone shopping and called it sick. Some days I can work from home, but I just can't deal with the people at work.3. In school did you ever have to serve detention? What for?
I never served a detention for anything. Cue Adam Ant's "Goody Two-Shoes" (inside joke).4. Have you ever had food poisoning? What did you eat that caused it?
A few times. Once just after I got married I got up in the morning, went into the bathroom and threw up and felt fine. We both thought I was pregnant. No idea what caused that! Another time, I ate a piece apple pie that hadn't been refrigerated but was (obviously) past it's safety date. Yuck; that was icky; kinda ruined apple pie for me!5. Do you have any tattoos? If not, would you ever consider getting one?
No, and no.

Depends on the age of the child, but generally I think we'd get along all right. Unless you mean the teenager I was, since all adults were anathema then. ;-)

Curious as a Cat
1) Who is the biggest hypocrite you have ever met?
Probably my brother. No, I think I'll go with Dean, my brother-in-law. I think addiction makes one into a huge hypocrite.2) "I usually cry daily, but right now all that does is mess up my eyes more, so I'm trying very hard not to."
3) Name some of your superstitions and explain why you think you believe in them.
I tend to knock wood when I say something like "It's been awhile since anyone at work got sick" in order to prevent it. I don't think I really believe in it; it's just a habit. I can't think of anything else, but I know I have a few others, but I really do consider them all habits, not superstitions that I actually believe in.4) What one thing in your life would you most like to complete?
Learning and achieving my purpose for being.5) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.
I love statuary. I 'get it' in a way that a lot of 2-dimensional art doesn't really work (as well) for me. I like seeing the shape emerge from the block of marble, the parts emerging from the forms in the case of bronze, and how the parts work together to keep it stable. I also like seeing the intricacies of the design: look at the folds in Hamilton's coat and the ruffles of his cravat! Awesome.

The dichotomy between what my friends tell me about myself, and what I think of myself.2) What is the ugliest outfit you ever remember wearing?
I was not in love with the outfit I wore at my niece's wedding last year. And there were all those homemade clothes I had to wear as a child.3) If you could physically destroy one thing, what would it be and how would you do it?
I don't know how I'd do it, but I'd like to remove all knowledge of nuclear bombs (and the bombs themselves) from humanity.4) When were you closest to being a champion?
When I was in school, I always felt like a champion in terms of academics.5) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.

I chose this photo several months ago because it reminded me then of winter. I'm so sick of winter now. Ironically, however, my best friend LOVES penguins. Jenny has known me longer than Beast, and has been a comfort to me oodles of times in the past. She called me Saturday evening and told me that her father died Saturday morning after a very bad week in the hospital (fortunately he was unconscious for all of it). So, these penguins today are bittersweet instead of just cute.

| You Are Bare Feet |
![]() Even wearing shoes can be a little too constraining for you at times! You are very comfortable in your own skin. You are one of the most real people around. You don't have anything to hide. Open and accepting, you are willing to discuss or entertain almost any topic. You are a very tolerant person. You are accepting and not judgmental. You should live: Somewhere warm You should work: At your own business, where you can set the rules. |
Otherwise, yeah. I love bare feet.

Manic Monday
What do you order when you eat Chinese food?
I rotate among Chicken Cashew, Shrimp Fried Rice (or sometimes Pork or Chicken), or a plate full of Crab Rangoons. I'd go for Egg Rolls, but our local Chinese place only has Spring Rolls, of which I'm not fond. How much have you controlled the course your life has taken?
To be honest...not much. However, I'm a firm believer that "God helps those who help themselves."Whose opinion do you value when deciding how to vote?
Beast and I talk it over, of course, but I make my own decisions based on what I find on candidate websites, hear in their speeches, and see in their overall bearing and history.

| You Are Cilantro |
![]() The good news is that most people love you more than anything else in the world. You are distinct, unusual, fresh, and very controversial. And you wouldn't have it any other way. |
Anyway, I like cilantro, so it's good.

Pondering
1. What event most shaped your character? In ways I am mostly unaware of: my sister's illness when I was a young child. In ways I have some control over, the deaths of my father and sister in 1994.
2. What is your earliest childhood memory? Blah blah blah
3. Have you ever witness a miracle, or seen something that could not be explained? If so what was it? Yes, my sister's survival, and those occasional flashes of extreme clarity that happen rarely.
4. Do you belive in God? Yes.
5. Do you belive in the afterlife? I definitely don't think we're done when we die.
6. Do you belive in evolution? That humans evolved from apes? OK, first of all, humans are not proposed to have descended from apes. Get your fucking facts straight! The theory states that humans and apes evolved from a common ancestor--we took one genetic path, apes took another. Gawd, how I hate how people screw this up!! And I'm not even a scientist.
And, yes, I think it fits given the information we have now, but we don't know everything yet...do we?
7. What place would you most like to travel to? Australia and New Zealand.
8. Do you believe in till death do us part? Well, yes...within reason of course.
9. Do you support same sex marriage? Naturally.
10. Why or why not? None of my business, and who other people love doesn't matter to my personal relationships.
11. What changes would you like to see made in our government? Keep out of our lives, stop picking at each other, and just do the jobs you were hired to do.
12. Who or what was your biggest inspiration in life? My parents and grandparents, and parents-in-law as well.
13. Have you ever had a near death experiance? Not really. Not of my own.
14. Do you belive you can learn from elderly persons? We can learn from everyone, regardless of age. Respect of everyone is good for everyone.
15. What decade would you most liked to have lived in? Of the 20th century, I'd go with the 20s or 00s.
16. What historic person do you most admire? Why? Albert Schweitzer.
17. Do you think prisons reform people? You can't reform anyone who isn't interested in changing. Just like an alcoholic, the only person who can change the behavior is the person him- or herself.
18. Do you belive in global warming? I believe we have abused our planet, potentially beyond repair.
19. Do you do anything to conserve energy, or help the environment? We keep the heat turned low, we use the funky lightbulbs, we try to combine errands into one trip rather than making three trips, and we recycle pretty religiously.
20. Do you think space exploration is necessary? I dunno about 'necessary' but important. I think stuff here on earth outranks space though.
21. Do you think world peace is possible? Humans have some evolving yet to do before that happens.
