Happy Birthday Bruce
Tuesday was the birthday of one of my idols, Bruce Springsteen. To celebrate, here are five questions, taken directly from his lyrics, that I predict nobody will want to answer! However, you’ve been quite thoughtful and creative in the past when I’ve come up with questions like this, so let’s have at it. For Bruce.
I came up with twelve questions, actually, and chose the five I liked best (either because I thought the questions were better or because I loved the songs), but I’m posting the remainders at the bottom in case anyone wants to swap some out, or wants to answer them all.
- Hey, what else can we do now, except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair? (“Thunder Road,” 1975)
Well, we could roll up the window and turn on the air. Wait, this is 1975, New Jersey, and I doubt there's A/C in that car. Where's the Harley, and isn't your name Wendy?
- Is a dream a lie if it don’t come true, or is it something worse? (“The River,” 1980)
DEFinitely something worse. Unless, of course, the dream was actually a nightmare, and then it's definitely a lie.
- So tell me who I see when I look in your eyes: is that you, baby, or just a brilliant disguise? (“Brilliant Disguise,” 1987)
Yikes. Bit o' the both, I 'spect. Could just be a reflection of yourself, too. Am I getting too existential here?
- Do you think what I’m asking’s too much? (“Human Touch,” 1992)
Depends entirely on what you're asking, dear Bruce. Probably not too much.
- Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart? (“Life Itself,” 2009)
Babe, if you figure that out, you'll be the smartest guy ever, and a billionaire if you choose to share it. What's that? You've already got plenty of money? OK then.
Leftovers:
- Baby, did you make it all right? (“Racing in the Street,” 1978)
I shore did. Didn't I?
- But if dreams came true, oh wouldn’t that be nice? (“Prove it All Night,” 1978)
As above, it's kinda dependent on the dream. The one I woke up with this morning would be excellent if it were real. Some others....no thanks!
- Well son, you got a statement you’d like to make before the bailiff comes to forever take you away? (“Johnny 99,” 1982)
Not till I talk to my attorney, sir.
- How do you live broken-hearted? (“Mary’s Place,” 2002)
Keep putting one foot in front of the other over and over. People do it every day.
- How do I begin again? (“City of Ruins,” 2002)
See previous answer. Just start doing things, slowly.
- Can you ask for anything more? (“The Wrestler,” 2009)
Oh, I can always do that, yessirbyGod!
- Where’s the work that’ll set my hands, my soul free? (“We Take Care of Our Own,” 2012)
Only you can figure that one out. And, like many things in life, it's better not to be overly fussy.
1 sweet-talkers :
I'm glad you knew Bruce's music well enough to answer these. I didn't get it. Good job.
