Six-Word Saturday

(Link in meme-roll)

FAMILY WEEKEND means eating out lots.

We drove up to Sparky's college town (where we both also went to college) yesterday, arriving at about 4:15. After we stopped in to register in the Union (not what they call it now, but that's how we identified it 25+ years ago!), we saw Sparky setting up for his dinner shift in the dining room (now called the MDR--seriously) and then headed off to check in to our hotel downtown and chill for a couple of hours. Once he was done with his work, we picked him up (roommates were otherwise occupied) and took him to a nearby gaststätte--he wanted German, which is not too hard to find in that area--and just about closed down the place when we left, before 10, on a Friday. That was weird, but the food was good, just too much. WAY too much: both Beast and I brought home at least half our main course. Sparky, being a teenage boy, ate a Currywurstplatte (not something I'll try again, yuck) and Pilz Schnitzel for a main course, along with a cold German salad (cabbage, lettuce, chickpeas, beets, carrots....).

This morning he wanted to go to Denny's...which turned out to be kitty-corner across the street from the Gaststätte...and we porked out again. I actually feel a little sick from all the food I've eaten in the last 30 hours.

It was a good day. After eating, we hit Target for more food for the dorm room (cuz, God forbid they starve to death a block from the MDR!), headed back to the dorm to drop that off and see Sparky's tentative 2nd semester schedule, his plans for winter session (no classes really fit), and get us signed up so we can pay his bill without the Business Office having to put a hold on his registration again next semester. Yeah, well, we assumed they'd send a bill, but when Sparky got an email last week saying he couldn't sign up for 2nd semester, we found out we're supposed to have access to the billing through email and the .edu portal. I think we've got it sorted out. ANYway, back in the dorm, Roommate J appeared with his girlfriend, to whom we were introduced--having heard much about her from Sparky as she and Roommate E's girlfriend are both in the room pretty much round the clock. So it's a double room which occasionally sleeps up to 5--though last night Sparky was alone all night. Ah...college. heh

So, once we were done with the computer access stuff, and the putting-away-of-groceries, it became apparent that Sparky didn't really have any ideas for entertaining us, and there are precisely three chairs in the room...and he really wanted us gone. So we left. And I got all maudlin and stupid in the car.

The hotel we stayed in was nice, although we couldn't figure out the HVAC, so it kept resetting itself to 78 degrees. That made it tricky to sleep, to say the least. Awesome bed, not-so-awesome pillows, great shower, comfy chairs....I'd recommend it, if you're in the market for a boutique hotel across from a cigar-bar and tattoo parlor (which incidentally is the very one Sparky and his roommates visited when J got his man-hand-sized tattoo the first week of school). The restaurant was being rehabbed, but we probably wouldn't eat there anyway: far too fancy for us.

And that was our fun. Whee.

It does seem like you ate a lot, but it also seems like you enjoyed the time with your son!!

Sounds like a lot of food and a lot of chores but all good stuff. I never knew what to do with my parents when they visited, though, now that I think about it, they never really visited. They dropped me off at the start of freshman year and I think they picked me up twice to bring me home for a holiday break. Other than that, my then-fiance was in charge of transport.

Thanks for playing 6WS!
