School Daze
[01] What was something you memorized for school and still can recall?
Mrs. White had us memorize a long list of prepositions in 7th grade. I can still do "about above across after against along among around at..." and into the Bs. Otherwise, I don't remember being required to memorize anything except my times tables; and I still have issues in the 6 and 8 lists, in the 40s through 60s. Why? Who knows.[02] Did you take a foreign language in school and did you enjoy it?
I took Spanish from 7th grade on. Two years in high school were independent study and I ended up completing three years of coursework in that time, which meant I could (and did) test out of freshman Spanish in college...for credit. I love languages. I would study them again, in a heartbeat.[03] With what groups of people did you associate?
In case you couldn't tell: the braniacs (not that we called ourselves that then!). And the band geeks. There was a lot of overlap between the two groups. ;-)[04] In which sport/club/band (instrument) did you participate?
I played flute in Concert Band (6 years), Orchestra (1 or 2 years) and Wind Ensemble (2 years-ish); senior year I got to play piccolo as well. That meant the wonderful solo from "Stars & Stripes Forever" which I can still whistle when I hear it. Sad, eh? I was also an assistant for the wrestling team (don't ask) and a staunch member of International Club. Honor Society doesn't count as a club...well, not for us: we had our picture taken once a year and that was it. Oh, and in junior high I did volleyball for one season and basketball for one season. Hated it, both times.[05] What were your school mascot and colors?
In junior high we were the Panthers, and our colors were an untimely, unfortunate red and white. Our opponents loved calling us the Pink Panthers. (In college, there was a cheap dorm mixed dream called Pink Panther Piss that always made me giggle, but I couldn't actually force myself to drink it, and not only because of that last word--it was insulting to my residual Panther Pride!)
In high school we were the Pirates, with a color palette of medium blue/white/silver. Pirates. In Colorado. Yeah. Okay. I never really thought about that weirdness until much later in life.
