Patrick's Place

Saturday Six

1. How big was the "dream home" you wanted when you were a kid?
I remember "designing" houses incessantly for an extended period of my childhood. My dad was an architect so he had some fun templates I borrowed, but for whatever reason, I originally started with a giant outer footprint and then filling in rooms rather than the other way around. Once I conquered that problem, my houses often had hallways leading nowhere and random round rooms. The problem, really, was that my house was already pretty awesome, and bigger than most on the block, so I didn't really have anywhere to go.
2. How close is your current residence to your dream home?
No round rooms and no hallways at all. A much bigger yard. But the porch...the porch is straight out of my childhood.
3. What career would have been your "dream job" when you were a kid?
I wanted to be a grocery-story checker for a very long time, because of the cash-register. The kind with big buttons with amounts on it, not the current 10-key. The 10-key killed my dreams.
4. Considering your current occupation, what is the biggest carryover from your childhood dream job?
I do a lot of typing, but not really much button pushing. It's definitely well within the "woman's work" rubric, however. Oh, well, we can't all be trailblazers, right? I work with a LOT of progressive, intelligent people though, so that's fun, and quite a change from who I'd be working with at a grocery store, I think.
5. What is the biggest obstacle to reaching your true "dream job" today?
I'm there. I really do love my job. Even when people come in drunk and throw 150-decibel temper tantrums (and shoes) or play pocket pool while watching porn, even when I have to try to figure out RDA, even when I despair because of the freaking estrogen in which I'm drowning...I love my job.
6. What color was your "dream car" when you were a kid?
I don't think the color was as much of an issue of its "truckness."
