"For tribes that maintain beliefs in clan, it is customarily taboo to marry someone of the same clan. There are ingrained cultural concepts that vary from tribe to tribe for handling situations where one has a nonnative parent from whom they would normally receive their clan." (Everything You Wanted to Know About Indians But Were Afraid to Ask by Anton Treuer, p. 42)The book is primarily arranged in Q&A format, so finding two sentences together that didn't involve the question plus one sentence of the answer is tricky. The sentences I quoted are later in the response to the following question: What are clans and do all Indians have them?
