Today’s questions all relate to genres.

[Listen] Some people don’t like music being categorized into genres at all. Are genres helpful, or do they hinder a musician’s creative potential?
I think they are helpful as a selling point in broad strokes. For instance, I am not an opera fan, so am unlikely to appreciate anyone, no matter how good, who sings Rossini. However, if I refused categorically (pun intended) to EVER listen to opera singers, I would have missed Freddie Mercury singing "Barcelona" along with Montserrat Cabelle. On the other hand, knowing that a band is being compared to Rush means I never have to bother listening to them! ;-)
[Watch] Are there types of movie genres you tend to watch with different social circles? (I.e., maybe you watch romantic comedies with your parents, action flicks with your spouse, horror movies with a special friend, etc.)
I tend not to watch musicals, or girl flicks with Beast. Sparky has discovered older movies so we occasionally will watch some old nugget. Mostly, we watch action and I try not to roll my eyes too loudly.
[Read] Is there a type of genre you feel a little ashamed to enjoy reading?
Nope. I was told many years ago that mysteries are really no better than romances and I laughed my ass off. Apparently, I'm supposed to feel guilty about reading mysteries? No. I read kids' books and "literature" for grownups and the occasional graphic novel with no interest in what people think of me and my choices. Honestly, if that's how people judge me, fuck 'em.
