Fifteen Family Members I Like, and Why*
- Sparky--He's adorable, and growing up to be a pretty cool person (when he's not being overrun with hormones), and he is my son so I have to list him, eh? :-)
- Beast--After knowing him for 25 years...the song from "Fiddler on the Roof" just seems to be more and more applicable:
"Do I love him?
For twenty-five years I've lived with him
Fought him, starved with him
Twenty-five years my bed is his
If that's not love, what is?" - Elizabeth--She's practically my sister, and sensible and funny and fun. Not sure where she got the 'fun' part, but I'm not complaining!
- Rosellen--Smart, zOMG brilliant. Also fun: she rides a unicycle. And, just very cool. I want to be her when I grow up...again.
- Jesse--Ellen's brother. I've liked him since his birth, in spite of dropping him on his head. It doesn't seem to have affected him. He's the one I look to when Sparky starts making me crazy; he used to drive his mom nuts in similar ways.
- Don--Best dry wit of anyone I know. Hands down. Best-looking person in the family too, combined with a dependableness and practicality that his mom would be very proud of.
- Cece--She puts up with my brother: for that she should be higher on the list. I wish we lived nearer so we could hang out; I think we'd get along great!
- BIL--When he was in high school and college he used to get up to stuff with the specific intent to a) drive his parents nuts, and b) skirt the edges of every rule to see if they'd be enforced to the letter or to the spirit. He works for Amnesty International. How cool is that?
- Ellen--My favorite sister, the "fun one"...the one I have imaginary conversations in my head with all the time. I miss her more than anyone knows.
- Alan--He puts up with my most difficult niece, with an equanimity that I don't understand at all. Gets along with everyone. Of everyone on this list--omitting Beast and Sparky--he's the one I worry the most about.
- Marie--She is, surprisingly, the only one in my generation in the family who seems to fully 'get' the concept of me being an adult. Responsible, practical, and surprisingly funny (when she lets herself go). I'll forgive her for her attachment to baseball.
- Dad--He always made me laugh, frequently unintentionally because he was just so freakin' earnest about some things. I can't remember ever being really angry with him, ever. He always played the Good Cop with me, probably to the detriment of my relationship with my mother.
- James--He is a cat, one who has somehow managed to find more than nine lives. The boy (man) always lands on his feet. Engaging, serious, clueless, intense, goofy...I remember holding him when he was just a few days old and being amazed at how such a little person could emit that much poo so fast! (Hey, I was 9-going-on-10 at the time!!)
- Del--From childhood, always my favorite, even though he picked on me unmercifully. I've finally gotten over the hero-worship thing, but I admire him for what he's done with his life, and the hard work he's done to keep his son close to him in spite of physical distance.
- Hamil--As the youngest of my nieces/nephews, he has a special place in my heart because he was just a super-cute little boy. Always--ALWAYS!--smiling, cherubic, loving...and very traumatized by his dipshit mother. Now he's a young man who wants to be a cop, and I just can't picture him in that job. I hope he's changed or he'll never make it.
* No, these are not their real names!
