15 Reasons I Go To Work
- Money. It's nice to have a little extra padding in the budget. On a librarian's salary, padding is about all you get!
- Sanity. Mine. I stayed home for just over a year with Sparky when he was a toddler, and then worked only 16 hours/week for several years, mostly evenings. I'm not a good SAHM.
- I believe in my job. Public libraries are important, and it makes me happy to be affiliated with one.
- Some...well, MOST, of the people I work with are great. They are interesting and entertaining and fun.
- Some of the patrons are great. Most are ok, but there are a few who are really wonderful with whom I've developed friendships.
- I love the weird stuff that happens. I don't always like it when it happens, but it makes good blog-fodder.
- Networking. I've made some good friends in Library Land (outside of my personal workplace, I mean).
- It's never a problem to bring Sparky to work. Even when he was little, I frequently brought him to staff meetings, and a couple of times he had to come to work when I couldn't find a sitter in the evening. Now he comes and spends the day there on occasion, and even helps me out with projects.
- I can help Beast out when he has the occasional need for Reference. He called last night asking me to trawl the Public Notices for something in the local paper that has an impact on the sale of our old church building.
- Quick access to reading material. What would I do without it?
- No fines. During the time I wasn't working at a library, I realized that I had gotten really lax about watching due dates. It was a HUGE perk when I started back to work that I can delete those fines as they accrue.
- Mental stimulation. It's always something new, especially on the days when I work at the Reference desk.
- My boss rocks.
- Judging by the amount of work piled up around me right now, I've got a severe case of Job Security for the forseeable future. This week, I'm feeling that this is a real bonus, since all around people are losing jobs and feeling generally unsecure in their jobs.
- I can listen to music I like whenever I'm at my desk (unless the battery dies....like it did yesterday because I left the headphones on overnight).
