Spouse Material

You Would Make a Great 1930's Husband
You would be an ideal 1930s husband.

You're attentive, understanding, clean, and friendly.

You'd make an great husband for a woman of any era.

Well, except for the problematic physical limitations....

You Would Make an Okay 1930's Wife
You have some of the attributes of an ideal 1930's wife... but you probably didn't intend it to be that way.

You don't buy into retro gender roles, though you do embrace your femininity at times.

A 1930's man may find you passable, but you probably wouldn't want anything to do with him.
Absolutely right!

1) If the Pope promised he'd do one thing you asked, what would you ask him to do?
The current Pope: step down/abdicate for someone with a faint clue about the 21st century. Popes in general: unclench. [and, to be clear, the latter refers to virtually ALL religious leaders!]
2) What one experience has strengthened your character the most so far?
Parenthood.
Who knew I could resist the urge to murder so very many times? (Not only my kid, by the way, but people who mess with my kid too.)
3) Of all the people you've ever known, who have you most feared?
There was a very freaky dude who used the library where I worked as a teen--he was terrifying.
Really, though: PsychoBoss.
And Ronald Reagan. W and his cronies are somewhere near the top too.
4) Have you ever stolen anything, and if so what?
Tic-tacs, when I was about 10. The occasional book from the library's book sale. Pens / paper clips / rubber bands from work. Alert the authorities!!
5) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.
Public Domain Photo
Honestly, my first thought is "nice right-edge cropping!" My next thought is "anime convention attendee." Then I worry about how long it takes her to remove all that makeup and what her washcloths (washclothes??) and towels look like. I'm quite pleased that she's taken her fear of being strangled and found a way to deal with it, too.
I think she should stick to one shade of red per head and get some different lipstick.

OK, but if she walked in the library where I worked, I wouldn't even blink.

Manic Monday

(Link in blogroll)

Every person you have ever slept with is invited to a banquet where you are the guest of honor. No one will be in attendance except you, the collection of your former lovers, and the catering service. After the meal, you are asked to give a fifteen-minute speech to the assembly. What do you talk about?
Politics. Religion. You know, the good stuff.
What's your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
Sleep. Read. Sleep some more.
Are you a window person or an aisle person? Why?
I am 100% aisle nowadays. Used to be window, but there's no room for expansion (i.e. movement of any kind) there. Plus, you have to crawl over people to go to the bathroom.

Merged Miscellany

(two combined into one, but both swiped from Allison)

In winter, would you rather wear jackets or hoodies? It's pretty cold here: a jacket, or better yet, a coat.

Do you wish you were somewhere else right now? Nah.

How long can you go without your mobile phone? If I had to, forever. But I only actually use it 3-4 times a week, beyond checking the time and for messages.

Who did you last call babe/baby? Probably Sparky, and it was definitely "babe."

What time did you go to sleep last night? Which time? 10:30 and again at 2:15.

What/who woke you up today? ....stupid alarm...

Do you own a polo shirt? An actual 'polo'? No. Knockoffs? Yes.

How old do you look? No one has mentioned it lately, so I probably look my age.

Where are your siblings? Heaven, England, Texas, and Colorado.

What are you going to do after this? No clue.

Whose car were you in last? The Honda (ours).

What was the last thing you drank? I'm drinking ice water tonight.

Would you marry the last person you kissed? I can't remember if I kissed Beast or Sparky last. I'm already married to Beast. Let's just not even go the other place. {ugh}

Your ex shows up randomly at your house, what do you say? "May I help you?" I'm sure I wouldn't recognize him!

If it was free and it would work would you get plastic surgery? Nope. Having had emergency surgery, I would never do it by choice for something like this.

If you were to die today would your life be complete? I guess, by definition, it would have to be, eh?

Do you believe everyone deserves a second chance? ...I don't, but that's why I'm not God.

How do you handle stress? Not as well as I could. Better than I was doing in the winter.

Would you rather spend a whole day with your mom or your dad? Plock. Because, I can't spend it with Dad, and a day with Mom now is no fun. Thirty years ago...different story.

When was the last time you ran into your most recent ex? Plock!

Do you think you're approachable? Yup.

What is the last concert you went to? I have no idea.

The last person you argued with? Sparky and I are in a detente situation today.

Do you prefer warm or cold weather? Warm. Not humid, though.

Is any part of your body sore? Yup. My head is awful.

Do you commit to anything? ...der? Yes.

The funniest person you know? Uh...I know a lot of funny people. My brother can make me almost throw up laughing. But Don and Trud and Beast and Sparky and Redneck and Annie...they make me laugh a lot too.

Do you like change? I'm good with it. Mostly.

Do you get offended easily? On occasion. Not so much, though: I tend not to notice that people have said something 'off' till later.

Do you have a piggy bank? Yup. It's in the spare room.

Have you ever punched a girl? Not with intent to hurt, i.e. only on the arm.

Slept in a different bed lately? No. I did doze on the couch recently in the middle of the night, though.

If you could pack up and leave your life now to move away, would you? Nope.

Can you take a bra off with one hand? I could, but not easily--I'd have to practice.

Do you still talk to the first person you kissed? Nope.

Do people underestimate you? Regularly. It's quite amusing.

Is it easy for others to make you feel awkward? I'm usually too busy making myself feel awkward.

Do you know what you are going to wear tomorrow? Nope.

Can you make yourself cry? Yes. Pretty easy, right now.

Would you go back in time if you were given the chance? Can we combine that with invisibility?

Have you ever been too drunk to remember anything? Yes. Not a good thing.

Do you know anyone who lives in Wyoming? Yes. Used to know lots of people there, now just a couple.

Have you ever been white water rafting? Nope. Dang.

Do you think you would make a good parent? I AM a good parent!

What is your current place of employment? MPOW.

Have you ever liked someone who treated you like crap? Not recently.

Has anyone ever borrowed something from you and never returned it? Yep. Still missing those Stephen King books, Chelsea.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

What kind of printer paper do you have? No clue. I know that what's currently in the printer is pre-used (i.e., we're doing back-of-the-page printing).

What kind of toothpaste do you use? Crest. I need to replace the Sensodyne tomorrow, though.

Have you ever had a splinter anywhere other than your hands? Well, YEAH!

Have you accidentally kissed an animal? I don't think you can accidentally kiss anything.

Do you own a copy of Microsoft Visual Studio? Not that I'm aware of.

Do you have a pool? No.

When was the last time you sat in a port-o-potty? May.

When was your last spider bite? I'm not sure I've ever had one.

Have you been to Europe? A few times.

Have you ever written a song? No.

What is your opinion of Canada? I like.

Disneyland Resort or SixFlags? NEITHER!!!!!!

How many fans are in your house? One with the furnace, and I think three others? Oh, and the 5 ceiling fans. [Trading Spaces is not allowed in my house!]

Have you ever licked a DVD to clean it? I gave up licking things for this purpose a LONG time ago.

If your keyboard had a turn computer on / off button would you use it? WTF? Actually, ok, our desktop does and yes that's how we turn off the PC. Our other computers are laptops so the off button is about 1/2" from the Del button.

What would you do if a water heater randomly fell out of the sky into your front yard? Take photos, say several prayers of gratitude that it missed the house and any people, and then call the police. Hmmm, how are we going to get rid of it...?

If you could pee on somebody's car w/o getting caught would you do it? Why the HELL would I do that??

What is your favorite instant messenger? Meebo.

Do you have a Microsoft Natural Keyboard (has a windows logo key)? No. No clue what it is.

Do you have a fire safe? Yep.

What would you do if a tarantula was in your mailbox? I probably wouldn't know until my hand was already in the box. I just read today that they really aren't that poisonous, but the thought of those hairy legs.... {shudder}

Have you ever eaten something that was not meant to be eaten? Not intentionally. Oh, except paper, when I was considerably younger.

Do you know what USB Stands for? No, but I could go look it up if necessary.

Does the lady in the Vonage Commercials seem like a perky morning person? She seems awfully perky for a Romulan, yes.

Do you crack your neck? Not intentionally.

Have you ever used a magnifying glass to kill ants? No, I was busy being productive as a child.

Do you like the smell of bleach? Only in the sense that it means "clean" to me. I don't use it as an air freshener, or a cologne.

Do you own a cool phone? I have no idea if my phone is cool.

Do you like the sound of thunder? I sorta do.

Do you use the word[s] 'skid mark' a lot? No.

Who has changed your life the most? ...oh, I dunno. My head hurts to[o] much to think this [through] properly.

How many profile views do you have on your MySpace? Since I haven't visited MySpac[e] more than twice this year, I wouldn't know.

Did you ever have a neopet? Nope.

If you were a writer what genre would you write? I'd prefer to say I wrote fiction, but I fear I'm more of an essay/nonfiction writer.

Is there one thing you would never eat? I'm with Allison: liver

Describe yourself in 5 words: I don't tolerate pain well.

Ever meet anyone famous? Yes.

Color Personality

Your result for The Color Code Test...

Color Code: BLUE: The Social Butterfly

29% Red, 46% Blue, 14% White and 11% Yellow!

Here are the basics: For a more in depth analysis, I suggest you look up the Color Code, and take a more intensive test.

BLUE MOTIVE: Intimacy

BLUE NEEDS: To be good (morally), To be understood, To be appreciated, Acceptance.

BLUE WANTS: To reveal insecurities, Quality, Autonomy, Security.

SUMMARY: Blues are motivated by altruism. They love to do nice things for others. they look for opportunites to give up something in order to bring another person happiness. Selflessness rather than selfishness is their guiding philosophy. Blues seek intimacy. They want to be loved and to love. A true blue will sacrifice a successful career to improve an important relationship. Blues crave being understood. They are gratified when they are listened to, when they feel understood and appreciated. Blues may have thier hearts broken more than most people, but they also spend much more time in love. Blues are directed by a strong moral conscience. They have a moral code that guides them in their decision making, their value judgements, and their leisure time. A blue would rather lose than cheat. Ethically, blues are people who should be in positions of power, but seldom are.

1. What’s the last card game you played, and with whom did you play?
Well, it was either Egyptian Rat Screw or Spoons--probably the latter--with our youth group. It's been awhile.
2. What’s the last board game you played, and with whom did you play?
I played...hmmm, something...Worst Case Scenario, maybe?...with Sparky a few months ago.
3. What’s the last computer game you played, and with whom did you play?
I played a couple of Mah-Jongg games Thursday night online. Just me with the snoring Beast across the room.
4. Take the quiz: Which chess piece are you?

Your result for Which Chess Piece are You Test?...

The Queen's Confidante

Congrats! Only 5-7% of the population score this!

The Queen's Confidante is the first to hear the beat of a different drum. Many plunge into the avant garde experience and generally set the trend for their friends. They are more in touch with reality using their senses but this makes them want to live for the ‘here and now’. The Confidante is full of charm and may flow with compliments even if it [sic] isn’t deserved. Rather than write a poem on the beauty of life – they would rather live out the written story of beauty.

The Queen’s Confidante is usually peaceful and easygoing in nature. They usually adopt a 'live and let live' approach to life. They take things at their own pace and live for the moment. They may be quiet but are pleasant, considerate and caring. They may not be inclined to debate or air their views, but of course their values are important to them. They will solve problems as they arise especially if it [sic] concerns people. Generally the Confidante is one who develops great team spirit through the promotion of cooperation. They will only repeat facts without placing too much spin or interpretation on them. Because of this they may be the best mediators.

The Confidante is sensitive to its environment, and much more perceiving than others with regards to the physical world. They can notice variations in behavior of others. They are highly conscious of companions and friends, but they prefer to let others direct. This ‘Pawn’ is rarer than others because they are emotionally well rounded with a great degree of empathy. Because of this empathy, they can be overly concerned with ‘feelings’. They may even sacrifice their ideals and not contribute enough, especially if they don’t wish to exercise criticism.

Take Which Chess Piece are You Test? at HelloQuizzy

Uh, well, I do like this, but I'm not sure of it's accuracy. Then again, I'm supposed to accept compliments even when they aren't deserved, so ... YAY! :-)
5. Of the games you listed in the first three answers, did you win any of the matches?
I rarely win at youth group: too busy watching the kids' faces and appreciating them. I probably won Worst Case Scenario. I usually do. ;-) I won one Mah-Jongg and lost one.
6. If you could only play one single game for the rest of your life, which game would you play and why would you choose it?
All I need is a deck of cards and I can make up a game!

We Travel Well

1. What part of the world and country do you live in?
I live in the upper midwest of the U.S. in the Land of Flatness.
2. What is the furthest from home that you have been, and where is it?
I think that would be Beijing, 23 years ago.
3. What travel destination have you enjoyed the most?
Wow, so many! In more or less chronological order: the Rockies (particularly the San Juans in CO), San Diego, Inverness, Leicester, London, Milwaukee, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, Pasadena, San Francisco, the Black Hills, Devon, St. Petersburg (though it was Leningrad then), Irkutsk, Beijing, Zurich, Rome, Florence, Zurich, Baltimore, Moosehead Lake, Bangor, Lake Geneva, Chicago, Billings, Washington, D.C., Springfield (IL), Orlando, Door County, Galena, Reelfoot Lake, Athens / Delphi / Ydra, southwestern Germany, Scottsdale, Ontario and parts of Quebec, Las Vegas (including Boulder Dam), the Gulf Coast, Lincoln, Durham, the Smoky Mountains, Kentucky / Tennessee / Virginia.
4. What travel destination have you enjoyed the least?
Most of what I've seen of PA, Montreal, virtually all of what I've seen of TX, WY, and UT, Frankfurt (Germany), Moscow, New Orleans (those last two may very well be because of the weather when I was there)....
5. Is there somewhere you’d like to visit but have not, and where is it?
I'd like to spend some time in Missouri and Arkansas in the Ozarks. It would be fun to go down the Atlantic coast from Virginia through Georgia. There is a cruise SOMEwhere in my future...Alaska or Mexico. I want to go to Egypt and Kenya and Macchu Picchu and Australia and New Zealand. I would also like to visit Auschwitz and Amsterdam. Also would love to do a blitz visit to NYC and do the 7 or 8 specific points of interest there--and then LEAVE!!
6. Do you prefer traveling to see historic places or to hit the beach and relax?
I grew up doing vacations where we Went Places and Did Things. Beast always went somewhere with his folks and just hung out. I'm learning to appreciate that part of vacations, but I prefer to not laze around too much--I'm easily bored.
7. What popular vacation destination have you never considered because you think you’d not like it?
The Amazon is RIGHT OUT along with any other jungly place (parts of Africa, most of Central America, etc.)! Also, I'm not all that interested in the Pacific Northwest because of the rain--though I'd love to see the inland parts of those states (and provinces). I'm not interested in Asia at all--don't know why not. I never ever need to see Branson, or Yosemite, or Coney Island and most of New York City.
8. Where do you travel to most recently?
Most recently, Anaheim for a conference. I wouldn't recommend it as a vacation spot, though I do love palm trees. The last vacation I took was last summer when we saw parts of KY, TN, VA, MD, PA and OH. Much of it was great. Some of it was amazing, breathtaking and wonderful. A few places sucked.
9. Do you like day trip "mini-vacations"?
I'm not averse to them, but to really unwind, I need longer than that.

(Link in blogroll)

What are the five things you simply must have when you are away from home [i.e. on vactaion]? And why? Any history or goofy things, or stories?
  1. Money or credit cards. For spending, of course, but the credit cards also work as ID in some cases. To go along with that, passport and/or driver's license.
  2. Lists. Things to do in various places, restaurants, hotels, packing, addresses of people who want postcards or mementos, etc. etc.
  3. Enough meds to last at least a couple of days past the planned return date.
  4. The camera. Which I frequently forget to use at the best possible times.
  5. Cheetos.
Sorry, got no good stories on this today...

Metaphors Be With You

1. When you go to the beach, lake, or pool, are you more likely to lower yourself gradually into cold water or to take a determined plunge and get it over with?
Dive right in! Well, not really, since I can't swim, but I would rather get it all over with at once.
2. How is this like (or unlike) your approach to other tasks or ordeals?
Yes, it is a good metaphor...I tend to dive in without checking carefully. Getting better at it, but not cured yet.
3. When someone gives you flowers, are you more likely to let them turn completely brown and gross before throwing them out, or to discard them the moment they take on that sick-flower look?
When they are wilted, I pull individual flowers out. If they all go at once, ok. If I end up with a half-size bouquet in a week, that's ok too. I also keep in mind the whole mold thing, too.
4. How is this like (or unlike) your approach to other gifts, purchases, or relationships?
Uh, I don't think they relate in my case. I don't throw away my friendships when they get moldy!
5. Think of your favorite movie (or a movie you really like, if you can’t think of a favorite). Some people say that the reasons you love your favorite movie are related to what you value in romantic relationships. How is this true or untrue in your case?
I value psychopathology ("Heathers") in my romantic relationships?? Uh, no.

Four for Friday

(Link in blogroll)

Q1 - Popcorn and Candy: According to the author of "Why Popcorn Costs So Much at the Movies, And Other Pricing Puzzles" (University of California-Irvine Professor Richard McKenzie), buying your movie candy at a local drugstore or Costco can save you as much as 86% from what the theater charges on a price per ounce basis. When you go to the movies, what type of candy and refreshments do you usually buy, or do smuggle yours into the theatre?
I buy at the local theatre, since that's how they make all their money. At the theatre where they charge $10 for a seat, I smuggle what I can in.
Q2 - Then & Now: A recent special issue of People magazine focusing on child actors from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, profiled more than 100 former showbiz kids with an emphasis on where they are in their lives today. Are there any child actors you would like an update on? If so, which one(s)?
Nope. I can do my own research, thanks: I am a librarian.
Q3 - Pollution: Recent reports indicate that as much as 46,000 pieces of floating plastic can be found per square mile of ocean. If you were enjoying time at the beach by wading in the water, and you noticed garbage floating nearby, would you collect it and throw it away once you were back on shore?
Probably, within reason. But I almost never go to a beach.
Q4 - Right Now: What is your most pressing concern right now?
Health of my loved ones. It all comes down to terminal illness, y'know?

Mister, I got a date with a dream!

"say it don't spray it"

Swiped from Kwizgiver

How many people live in your house? Three.

Do you like your siblings? Some more than others, but overall and from a distance, yes.

What color are your nails? No polish, just plain on my fingers. My toes are mauve-ish.

What's your favorite place on earth? I don't have one perfectly wonderful place on earth.

Ever punch someone in the face? Nope.

Did you have a dream last night? Undoubtedly, but I don't remember anything of it.

Where is your shirt from? It says "Universal Studios" on it, so I'd bet on that being where it came from.

Are you mad at someone? Not particularly.

Where's your best friend? Somewhere north of me. Except for the one who is south of me.

Last place you bought something from? Wal-Mart, I'm sorry to say.

Last person you were in a car with? Sparky. He was driving.

What bank do you use? The one that currently owns the majority of our house.

Do you like being in pictures? It's not my favorite thing, but whatever.

Who's your last missed call from? Plock.

Ever broken something at someone else's house? My instinctive response is "of course" but I honestly can't think of anything. Maybe I haven't! (The barn floor was already broken!!)

Are you a good driver? I think so, all things considered.

What's on your mind right now? I have a sinus headache starting. Stupid allergies.

When is your birthday? About a week after election day, usually. Yep, just about exactly.

What kind of cell phone do you have? LG.

How old will you be in 5 years? 49. Damn.

Are you a movie buff? Nope.

If you could move tomorrow would you? Not until Sparky's out of high school.

Did you like the weather today? It's lovely.

Do you like the outdoors or indoors better? I love being outdoors, but I can't be there right now.

How tall are you? Still 172 cm. This is becoming a 'plock' question....

If you had to choose an age to remain for the rest of your life what would it be? Assuming I can't go back in time, I'll stick here, I think.

What's something in your past you wish you could relive? College.

What is your favorite thing to do on the weekends? Sleep in. I rarely get to do it though.

Favorite nearby vacation destination? Anyplace will do, thanks!

How's the weather? Summery.

Does anything on your body hurt? The aforementioned headache. As long as I don't move much, nothing else hurts.

What was the last television show you watched? I'm watching "Dateline on ID" right now.

Do you prefer orange or cherry ice-pops? I lean towards cherry, but I'm not that fussy. However, I can't really do ice anymore: old teeth.

Do you like pickles? I do.

Does your hair still smell like shampoo? I can't tell. I'm inured.

What's plugged in in the nearest outlet? The lamp is plugged in behind me. The laptop is plugged in about 5 feet away to my right.

What was the last thing you wrote by hand? I'm sure it was a call number, at work, either inside a book or for an audiobook.

What's your favorite commercial? Still liking the screaming animals one.

Do you pay attention to celebrity gossip? Not a lot. More than I should, for sure!

Have you sang out loud today? Hmmm...don't think so. I have done some chair dancing, though.

Do you wish it was 4 years into the future, or 4 years back? I'm good with RIGHT NOW!

Can you touch your nose with your foot? Yes. And I got a funny look from Sparky when I just tried it.

Do you prefer paper towels, or napkins? For what?

Are you currently texting anyone? Nope. Dual-tasking only.

What was the last movie you watched? Braveheart.

Who did you last high-five? Arlene, on Monday.

Describe your best friend in 3 words? Patient with me.

What is your MySpace song? Plock!

Wimpy Narcissism

You Are Occasionally a Wimp
You're pretty tough in every day life. You don't back down easily.

However, you can be a wimp at times, especially in stressful situations.

You can be overwhelmed or intimidated or just plain scared when life gets rough.

While these are natural reactions, you may want to face your fears a little more.

You'll need to come say that to me in person.
Please!
* * * * * * * * * * * * * *

You Are Occasionally a Narcissist
While you have healthy self esteem, you're really not that full of yourself.

Compared to most people, you're quite humble!

Though occasionally, you can't help and reflect on how great you are.

There's nothing wrong with being proud of yourself - as long as you don't let it go to your head!

Right. I'll work on that as soon as I get done with the important stuff in life.

Signs

You Are an "A-OK"
Your life philosophy can be summed up as, "Whatever will be, will be."

Your greatest wish is to live each day a little better than the next.

You are naturally calm and stable. Some people would call you a rock.

You feel one with the world. You are a spiritual person, though no one who knows you would guess it.
Picture me singing along with "Que Será Será" as I read this....

Actually, I think this is pretty close. I'm not as calm as I could be, though. I think I might not seem particularly spriitual at first glance. Otherwise...A-OK! ;-)

Hero

Found at Allison's last week...

I answered 18 of 20 questions right on the Wish Upon a Hero test which makes me a Superhero. Woo-hoo!

Liar Liar

You Sometimes Know When Someone's Lying
You can spot a liar if the liar slips up, but you're not always aware of other people's dishonesty.

Eventually a liar will reveal himself, and you usually will figure out if you've been lied to.

However, someone could be duping you without you knowing it. So watch out for the telltale signs of lying!
This is probably about as accurate as anything from Blogthings is likely to get! Pretty amazing.

Personality Type

Found this at Allison's last week:
Your answers suggest you are a Provider

The four aspects that make up this personality type are:

Summary of Providers
  • Warm, caring people who value order and tradition
  • Loyal workers who follow through on commitments
  • Think of themselves as sympathetic, easy-going and steady
  • They don't feel comfortable with radical change
More about Providers
Providers like to make plans with other people and then to work with them towards achievable goals in a fun, harmonious environment. They support people that are important to them and respect their individuality.

Provider is the most common personality type for women in the UK, according to a nationwide survey.

Providers have traditional values and support order and responsible behaviour. They enjoy social events, particularly family celebrations, and often help plan them. Providers work hard to avoid conflict, but they will state their beliefs when they think it is suitable.

In situations where they can't use their talents or are unappreciated, Providers may doubt their abilities and focus solely on the needs of other people. Under extreme stress, Providers may withdraw completely and become excessively critical of themselves and others.

Providers prefer warm, face-to-face communication and often express their ideas by telling stories from their own lives.

Provider Careers
Providers are often drawn to jobs in education, health care or religion.

It's important to remember that no survey can predict personality type with 100 percent accuracy. Experts say that we should use personality type to better understand ourselves and others, but shouldn't feel restricted by our results.
I'd say that's pretty accurate. Not 100%, but close enough.

More Reading Lists

I found this at Passages to the Past a few days ago and am finally getting around to doing it. My one caveat, which I thought of as I cut and paste, is...why isn't the Bible on this list? Or any other religious book of that sort? Do people on LibraryThing not own Bibles? Or do they not catalog them? Or is it because each Bible is entered under a slightly different name? (So see, Tim: uniform title DO serve a purpose. ;-) Actually, I have no idea if he's addressed this and CBA to check.)

OK, but anyway:

Curious as a Cat

(Link in blogroll)

1) What is the most disgusting thing you've ever had in your mouth?
Vomit. Sorry. But really, what could possibly be worse than that?
2) What is the boldest thing you've ever done?
I know the one thing I got a lot of flack (and sideways props) for was when I verbally took on a group of drunks one Fourth of July when they threw their bag full of garbage into our midst. All of my group was freaking out, but the other guys backed down. Whatever.
Personally, I have felt much bolder the times I've stood up for myself with my family and wit someone I'm bound by etiquette not to speak ill of.
3) If you could pick one person you know well to be more religious (or spiritual), who would it be?
First of all, we all have to make our own peace with our spirituality, which may look completely different from what I think is 'right.' However, I wish my brother would climb down off his high horse.
4) What is partner's best feature?
Honest trustworthiness.
5) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.

I'm pretty shocked at how well this photo turned out! It's a freeze frame of one of the rides at the Mall of America in mid-flight. I love all the different straight lines that are just slightly off. It really is right side up: the people are sideways in the 'car' in the center. Those poles you see that support the rollercoaster track actually move as the coasters go over them. Ack. I'm sure it's safe. Really. But you won't catch me riding any of those things here!

What's your favorite beach in the world?
I really loved, Puerto Vallarta's beaches, but San Diego is pretty nice too. And the one's on Ydra...actually those were great (except for the jellyfish).
What's the next country you want to visit?
I'd like to get back to Italy.
What one thing are you craving today?
Actually, I'm pretty good today. Someone else can have my portion of craving.

Float My Boat

1. Have you ever been on a cruise?
NO, dammit! And I get the sense that Beast thinks it's a big joke whenever I mention the idea to him of taking one. Grrrr.....
2. Do you own a gravy boat?
Yes, I do.
3. You've become the proud owner of a brand new boat. What do you name your vessel?
Why name what I'm going to turn around and sell ASAP?! Boats are not my thing, seeing as how I can't swim.
4. What is your favourite movie about boats?
Er...? Monty Python & the Holy Grail has a boat in it....
5. Do you get sea sick easily?
Probably. I get carsick easily, so it wouldn't surprise me a bit if I was also prone to seasickness.

3. What is your favorite band?
Overall, I have to go with U2.
4. What is your favorite song?
Today I'll go with "Picture of Jesus" by Ben Harper.
5. What is you favorite part of your job?
Cataloging. I powered through over 120 items today! Wheeeeee!
6. What is your favorite TV show, on now?
I'm just going to go with Dirty Jobs and call it even tonight.
7. What is your favorite TV show all time?
Bewitched. I wanted to be Sam.

Saturday 6

1. You decide to start a new exercise program. Without having a workout partner to help you, how likely are you to follow the plan religiously?
Ain't gonna happen: I require accoutability when it comes to exercise.
2. Who was usually the first one to say, "I love you" in your past relationships: you or your partner?
I've been married 22 years. I can't even clearly remember who my last partner WAS! :-) But, I'd assume it was I who jumped first most of the time.
3. If you decided you wanted to date someone, what would the primary test you’d give to see whether your "intended" had commitment issues?
I don't test in the sense of game-playing. I'd look at his past, look at what the road behind him looks like. If he won't share that kind of information, I think that's an F and a 'see ya.'
4. Take the quiz: Are you afraid of commitment?
I need to stop doing these until the weekend! When I did this one earlier this week, the result was "Ready, Willing and Able to Commit."
5. Do you find yourself faster or slower to commit to a presidential candidate now versus previous elections?
This year, I think, is an anomaly; I had selected 'my' candidate WAAAAAY back. I don't really commit till after the candidates are selected at the conventions, but the thing is, I vote pretty much party line on the federal elections.
6. You see something in a store that you really, really want. Once you decide that you’re actually going to buy it, how easy would it be to talk yourself out of your commitment to buy it?
If there are rational reasons to wait or skip it, I'll listen. If you're obnoxious about it, though, I won't: I'll buy it just to spite you at that point. Clearly, I'm mental.

Four for Friday

(Link in blogroll)

Q1 - Television: In case you've missed the public service announcements in recent months, the federal government here in the United States has set February 17, 2009, as the date by which all television stations must discontinue broadcasting an analog signal. Are you prepared for the switchover? Are any of the televisions in your home currently unable to accept a digital signal?
We're ready, 100%.
Q2 - R.S.V.P.: According to The Emily Post Institute, your most important obligation as an invited wedding guest is to respond to the invitation immediately, especially if you are unable to attend. Generally speaking, how long does it take for you to R.S.V.P. to a wedding, dinner party, birthday party, etc? Do you R.S.V.P. right away or do you tend to wait till the last possible moment?
I try to do it as soon as we get the invite, certainly within a week. It sort of depends on the formality of th invite; if they took the time to create and mail invitataions, I'm more likely to RSVP immediately than someone mentioning vague details of a party to me in passing.
Q3 - Hug it Out: How do you feel about hugging? Do enjoy being hugged or does it make you feel uncomfortable?
I grew up in a VERY non-huggy household, which is weird...but that's another post. In my freshman year of college, I rediscovered hugs and I now give them out fairly willy-nilly. Having said that, being hugged by someone I don't really know (and/or don't really like) is pretty awful.
Q4 - Stunt: Pick a celebrity, any celebrity. Got one? Good. Now, picture yourself in charge of their next publicity stunt. Do tell... who is your celebrity and what would you have them do?
I would send Paris Hilton to a convent, preferably one where they practice silence as a discipline, and lock her in for the next 15 years. [I'd also be sure to have another unrelated career lined up for myself that started as soon as she took off.]

Catching up

Swiped from Lisa who got it from Lachlan...etc.

2. When was the last time you threw up? What is today's fixation on vomit?? It's been quite a few months. I can't remember for sure.

40. Last song listened to? "Bye Bye Briana" by Nicole C. Mullen.

41. Are you allergic to anything? Right now, my allergy to air has kicked in.

42. Favorite pair of shoes you wear all the time? I will wear virtually any sandal happily. I have at least 6 pair. This is insane considering the climate of the area in which I live. I have more sandals than boots!

43. Are you jealous of anyone? If you don't have allergies, I'm green with envy. Jealous, though? Naaah.

44. Is anyone jealous of you? Whatever.

45. What time is it? 10:08 p.m.

46. Do any of your friends have children? The majority of them do. When did that happen??

47. Do you eat healthy? Hella no!

48. What do you usually do during the day? Try to stay awake.

49. Do you hate anyone right now? I'm almost past the perturbed stage with Schedule Nazi and headed into Can't Be Civil Land.

50. Do you use the word ‘hello’ daily? WTF? Of course.

51. How old will you be turning on your next birthday? 45.

52. Have you ever been to Six Flags? Yes.

53. How did you get one of your scars? Falling down on the threshold of my parents' back door when I was a kid. Got a very cool fingertip sized scar in the center of my right kneecap. The first of many injuries to that knee. It will be the first to be replaced in 15 or so years....

RevGalBlogPals Friday Five

What's in a Name?

1. So how did you come up with your blogging name? And/or the name of your blog?
Both have evolved over the 4+ years I've blogged. I started out using my name--VERY briefly. Then I used The C@t@loger for awhile, but that's awfully long. Now I'm Cat.
The first title of the first blog is precisely the same as it was the day I started it, I believe. My main blog started out as "Sweet Dreams" but I got tired of that and went with another favorite 80s song. Meanwhile, while I still was using the older title on the main blog, I started this here blog and the title for this one seemed pretty painfully obvious. ;-)
2. Are there any code names or secret identities in your blog? Any stories there?
Loads and loads! The only people I identify by (real) name are people who blog that way, or people who are otherwise unidentfiable. The only family members who are aware of my blogs are my husband and son, and I don't want anyone else finding me accidentally; my family have some weird names (I mean, look at the names I use in place of real names!). I DEFINITELY don't want some of my coworkers to find me, though there are two, at least, who do read my blog. My coworkers tend to be named for behavior or characteristics.
3. What are some blog titles that you just love? For their cleverness, drama, or sheer, crazy fun?
I have always loved Fleur-de-Lisa and Library Tavern from the moment I came across them. Others I love--there are too many to link due to my schedule at this point: The Zenformation Professional, Real Live Preacher, Planet Cataloging, Across the Pond...Cast, Reality Outran Expectation, Cheesehead in Paradise and Miss Information. One that's defunct whose title I still love is "insert witty title here" which still makes me snicker.
4. What three blogs are you devoted to? Other than the RevGalBlogPals blog of course!
For very wide-ranging reasons, Amy's, One Year Bible Blog, and Curious as a Cat.
5. Who introduced you to the world of blogging and why?
It's all down to Amy (linked above) and Jenica (who now blogs anonymously). I don't think they said that I had to do it, but they passed along their URLs and I said, "That's an AWESOME idea--I can do that!!"
Bonus question: Have you ever met any of your blogging friends? Where are some of the places you've met these fun folks?
I knew Amy and Jenica, of course, but I knew them Before Blog. I did a blog meet-up a couple of years ago with Annie (who is still a friend, though I no longer read her blog). There are several other bloggers whom I've met, but not directly through blogging. I suspect I will meet another couple of bloggers in the next year, one of whom is anonymous but we've just sorted out that we work with/for people who are related to one another.

Cinn's Friday 5

You could go for this, or you could go for that

[01] Would you rather eat hot-dogs every day for a year, or sleep on the floor for an entire year? I'd get used to the floor.

[02] Would you rather rob a bank or be homeless? Uh...homeless, I think, but that's a close call.

[03] Would you rather receive a new wardrobe or a new living room set? Living room set. But I get to choose it, ok?

[04] Would you rather experience a tornado or a flood? Tornado.

[05] Would you rather teach mathematics or science? What grade level? I could do math at any age up till 9th grade or so. Science I could only cover up to maybe 5th or 6th grade. I'd prefer math, I guess.

Online Edition

1. What browser do you use and why do you like it?
I use Explorer because I'm lazy.
2. Some people let it all hang out on their blog, while others keep it light, and still others fall somewhere in between. Where does your blog fall in that?
Depends on the blog. More hangs out on this one than on my main blog, which is read by more people I know (and therefore people I can't 'talk about'). I have circled back around on that blog to a lot of boring navel-gazing and I'm boring myself. I do try, on my blogs--with one VERY anonymous notable exception--to keep it as light as possible, most of the time. (Could I qualify that more??)
3. A lot of people have themed blog like a deployment blog or a crafty blog or one just for memes (like Friday Fun!). What about yours? Do you maintain more than one blog?
I have several blogs under three Blogger logins. There are two memes blogs: this one and the meme that I actually write. I have a regular blog, a books blog, a work blog for my own area of the library, and a work blog that's on our library's web page. There are blogs that are PURE vent. There is a Reminder-to-Notice-Good-Stuff blog. Can you tell I like to compartmentalize?
4. I like to play online games, like the ones found at Yahoo Games. Do you play any like that? Share some links!!
Free Rice is my regular standby; I've made it up to Level 51 a couple of times! I recently found a good Mah-Jong site. There are TONS of solitaire games here. If regular Sudoku is too easy, Killer Sudoku may be for you. Try this site for mindless 80s video games.
5. There are forums to chat on about just about everything under the sun. Do you belong to any and what are your favorites? Links, please!
I only read one forum now--too many posts to keep up with more than that.
6. Shopping time! What are your 5 favorite sites to shop at and what would you recommend I check out?!
I don't even know I have 5. I use Amazon a lot, and Snapfish (for our photos)...I can't think of anything else I've bought online in the past year or so. That is WEIRD!! I think I may kick over and start using Peapod though. I really don't like grocery shopping.

Friday Five

(Link in blogroll)

1. If you could change one life-changing event in the life of someone important to you, would you?
I'd like to find some way for my mom's life not to have been so traumatic (as a child).
2. Which do you think is easier to do, being friends for many years, or being life partners for many years?
This week, I'll say 'friends.'
3. Have you ever walked away from someone you considered a friend?
I guess one could look at a couple of situations that way. Then again, I wouldn't feel compelled to walk away from them if we were the sort of friends I wanted to battle to keep, right?
4. If you had to choose between telling the truth and hurting a friend or lying and making them happy, which would you choose?
First of all, timing is everything. Second of all, I learned long ago (three decades, at least) that lying to keep a friend doesn't work. Third of all, if pressed I will tell the truth about EVERYthing. However, some things I would need to be pressed pretty hard. "Do you like my new husband?" for instance requires a certain amount of delicacy.
5. Which would you rather hear--the truth which will hurt, or the comforting lie?
Depends on the question I'm asking. "Does this outfit look all right?" I want truth. "Am I a git for staying in this job/with this guy?" I might just not be asking the right question, so kindness is appreciated. ;-)

Friday Fill-Ins

(Link in blogroll)

1. If I could be a fly on the wall I would listen in on the discussion of fall children's programming between the children's librarians and director next month.

2. Jealousy is
a big timewaster that we all fall for in some guise or another.

3. When I see a shooting star my wish would be that
I believed in wishes.

4. I'd rather be
in Colorado than here any day!

5. Certain songs when I hear them make me wanna
cry with laughter.

6. If time were in a bottle
we wouldn't need LSD (not that anyone needs LSD, of course) or peyote.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to
not much of anything, tomorrow my plans include working 8 hours and going to a pig roast/anniversary party, and Sunday, I want to get a meeting scheduled...in fact get several youth-group-related meetings scheduled!

Bad Food

1. What was the last meal that caused you to be ill?
I can't remember getting sick from food for awhile, but part of that is intentional amnesia I think. ;-) The best bad food story I have is about a week after moving into our current house almost 5 years ago, I had a piece of apple pie at bedtime. I had not put the pie in the fridge, figuring "Baker's Square, probably has a billion preservatives, no fridge needed..." Well, a few hours after sending down the pie, my stomach hit the reject button and back it came. I knew it was the pie because as soon as I unloaded it, I felt 90% better; when I'm sick-sick, I continue to feel lousy.
Otherwise, I seem to have a more-or-less cast iron intestinal system.
[Karma being what it is, I will now come down with a two-week upper & lower GI infection....]
2. Are there any places you never dine anymore because of a bad experience hours after the meal?
Er, no. There are some places I won't dine because their food/service is execrable. There have been a few places that I was a little concerned about cleanliness. I don't remember getting sick anyplace though. At least, not in a local place. There was a vacation meal that made everyone sick, but since we were only there for the time it took to eat....
3. What’s your prescription for dealing with a food-caused illness?
Get whatever is causing the problem out of you as soon as possible, drink LOTS of water (lower GI), eat toast and tea or flat 7Up (upper GI). Sleep as much as possible.
4. When friends tell you about coming down with food-caused illnesses, do you avoid the places they name, or do you figure it’s a dice-roll wherever you go?
I probably would avoid it, but I do consider it to be somewhat of a dice roll.
5. After numerous citations, a very, very popular restaurant that you’re quite fond of is shut down by the health department until it can get everything up to code. When the health department gives the restaurant the o.k. to reopen, do you go?
I would go immediately after it reopens since that's likely to be the cleanest it'll be! ;-) After that, I'm not sure I'd go back at all. On the other hand, it depends on what the cites were for, and that sort of info is somewhat hard to find out.

Thursday Threesome

(Link in blogroll)
::Guys and Dolls ::

Onesome: Guys-- do the darnedest things, -right? What's the darnedest thing you've had a male acquaintance do that you just know a gal would never even think of? (Okay, girls, toilet seats do not count on this one {g}!)
Apparently, I really don't think this way. I'm having a terrible time coming up with something. Everything I think of, I am reminded that I know women who have done it too.
I guess I'll go with the over-arching sense that whatever a man says is CRITICALLY IMPORTANT, not to mention more valid. Everything from a mumbled, "Wow, we're out of cheese" to waking someone with "Tornado! Get in the basement right now!" are equally important and the universe should listen with 100% attention. [Yes, there are women like this...but next time you're at a restaurant or a casual meeting with approximate equal numbers of men and women, stop listening to WHAT is being said and watch the responses and body language.]
My apologies to the many men I know who truely don't behave this way. Usually. ;-)
Twosome: and-- to turn it around, what's the darnedest thing you've had a female acquaintance do that you just know a guy would never even think of? (Okay, guys, that hair-flip move doesn't count either...)
I think the "Do I look fat...?" comment should be excluded too.
I don't know too many guys who cry to get their way. Not all the women I know who've done this have done it intentionally or consciously, mind you, but it does tend to work. Sometimes. Even with cops.
My apologies to the women I know who never have/never will do this.
Threesome: Doll[s]--ing yourself up? What is your idea of dress-up? Hmmm... Let's go with Summer wear for now!
Sundress, maybe with a wrap in case the a/c gets stupid, and sandals with a heel.

By the way, I do make a lot of "men are..." and "women are..." comments, but I guess I really don't think that way deep down. I'm really struggling with those first two questions; while I think men and women are different in an ineffable way, when it comes right down to it, we use all the behavioral tricks pretty interchangeably. Society may use different words--for instance, ever notice how men 'network' while women 'gossip'?--but from my standpoint, we all do the same things.
