Friends

And the Question of the Week is…

How many of your friendships have lasted more than ten years? Which of your current friends do you feel will still be important to you ten years from now?
I'm omitting family members, for the most part. I consider my adult nieces as friends more than relatives.
Let's see. In order of time-known:

Laura--nearly 36 years
Mary M, who has known me for 35 years, but was my sister's friend first; we became closer after she died.
Beth A. and Warren--about 26 years
Jenny, Sherri, Jon, and The Beast--22 years (almost to the day, except for The Beast)
Linda--19 years
Martha S.--18 years
Pam R.--11 years

I hope they are all still friends in ten years! Of the 'newer' friends, I hope they are all still around:
Bloggy friends: Amy, Jenica, Molly....etc.etc.
Face-to-face friends: Amy (hee), Arlene, Lisa, Deb, Martha H., Trudie, Cindy, Beth K., Angel, John W., Beth B., Paul

Monday meming

Monday Madness

Another week of potpourri....... Have fun!

1. Do you own a dishwasher (and if not, do you even want one), or do you have to do your dishes by hand?
Yes, I have a dishwasher, and I love it. But I also find soapy dishwater very therapeutic (probably because I don't have to wash dishesf or 12 people three times each day!).

2. Do you put your dishes away immediately after washing them?
If they are hand-washed, no; they drip dry. A leftover from my childhood years of drying dishes.
If they are machine-washed, I usually let them air-dry for awhile. The dishwasher is usually run at 2 a.m., so I get to putting things away the next day sometime.

3. In the warm weather, do you like hanging your laundry out on the clothesline to dry, or do you prefer a dryer?
My mom always did this. I wish I could, but there are two problems: 1) I don't have a clothesline and I doubt the Homeowners' Association would be enthusiastic about flapping underwear and sheets; and 2) most importantly, I have allergies, so the only time I could safely hang out laundry would be winter. And who wants to do that?!

4. How many loads of laundry are done in your household each week?
Approx. 6 by the time we get the towels, sheets and clothes sorted. And they are usually pretty big loads. A big week involves 7 or 8 loads.

5. Do you own a pet? If so, do you buy them presents for holidays? Do you consider your pet(s) spoiled? If you don't own one, do you think you will one day?
When we had a dog, I always bought her a bone or special treat for Christmas, and I'd wrap it after cutting a hole in any packaging so she could smell it. Otherwise, she wasn't particularly spoiled I don't think. But I wouldn't admit it if she were, would I?
Now that we have guinea pigs only, I don't buy them gifts. They get special snacks once in awhile, but otherwise the only huge difference is they may get held and petted more on a holiday than normal.

6. It's Friday evening and you're planning your weekend. What's on your agenda?
Friday night usually involves a long, hot bath for me.
Otherwise, it kind of depends on whether I work Saturday. We usually play it by hear. However, now that football (pre-)season has started, Sunday has built-in game time scheduled.

Birth order

You Are Likely a First Born

At your darkest moments, you feel guilty.
At work and school, you do best when you're researching.
When you love someone, you tend to agree with them often.

In friendship, you are considerate and compromising.
Your ideal careers are: business, research, counseling, promotion, and speaking.
You will leave your mark on the world with discoveries, new information, and teaching people to dream.

Uh, no.

But, well, then, sortakinda. I'm ten years behind the nearest of my siblings, so I'm kinda like a whole new generation.

Anyway, the itals are what I think are true, but what do I know.

A day late...

From Saturday-8

tell us what creeps you out....

1. animal
I'm not into large bugs. And don't you think crabs are kind of weird-looking?
2. book
I read the novelization of "Alien" in one go when I was about 15, in bed, at night. I finished it at about 3 a.m. and didn't really sleep for the next few days.
3. film
I was pretty freaked at "Fatal Attraction." But as a rule, I don't see scary movies because I fall far too deeply into the story.
4. family member
My oldest sister's husband.
5. co-worker
Where to start...? hee
I don't work with anyone creepy, though. Maybe my former boss?
6. food
Sushi. Live octopus (that's from The Amazing Race, by the way). Basically, raw formerly- (or presently-) living creatures of any kind.
7. computer-related game, software, image, operating system, hardware bit, video, etc.
Computers don't creep me out, but based on personal relationships with someone who constantly advocates Linux, I'll probably never be able to use it without a shudder.
8. culture or cultural practise
Kind of a tie between foot-binding and female circumcision. Maybe widow immolation.... Are we sensing a theme?

Unconscious...

...Mutterings
I say ... and you think ... ?

Girlfriends:: boyfriends
Here to stay:: gray hair
Call me:: Blondie
Frustrated:: actor
Public school:: no uniforms
Glitch:: computers
Cheese:: mmm, uhm, Wensleydale
Director:: Roman Polanski
Pivotal:: moment
Exclusive:: story

I'm not as think as you drunk I am

You Are a Mai Tai

You aren't a big drinker, but you'll drink if the atmosphere is festive.
And when you're drunk, watch out! You're easily carried away.

Ooooh-kay.

Not sure I've ever had a mai-tai...but it does sound awfully good right now.

Representation

Saturday 8
today's questions deal with representation... please name the following things that best represent you, your personality, or your life:

1. animal : probably a terrier (sharp teeth, intense, friendly to known people...)
2. song : Amazing Grace
3. season : autumn
4. emotion : confused; cynical
5. flower or herb : orchid, probably a semi-hothouse variety
6. television show : The Osbournes minus the drug references
7. piece of clothing that you own : Old Navy jeans
8. celebrity : Meryl Streep

Color Quiz

Can be found here (I found it via Jenica).
Your Existing Situation
The existing situation contains critical or dangerous elements for which it is imperative that some solution be found. This may lead to sudden, even reckless, decisions. Self-willed and rejects any advice from others.

Your Stress Sources
The situation is regarded as threatening or dangerous. Outraged by the thought that she will be unable to achieve her goals and distressed at the feeling of helplessness to remedy this. Over-extended and feels beset, possibly to the point of nervous prostration.

Your Restrained Characteristics
Willing to participate and to allow herself to become involved, but tries to fend off conflict and disturbance in order to reduce tension.
Able to achieve satisfaction through sexual activity but restless and inclined to be emotionally withdrawn, which prevents her from becoming deeply involved.

Your Desired Objective
Wants to make a favorable impression and be rewarded as a special personality. Is therefore constantly on the watch to see whether she is succeeding in this and how others are reacting to her. This makes her feel that she is in control. Uses tactics cleverly in order to obtain influence and special recognition. Susceptible to the esthetic or original. [what does this last part mean??]

Your Actual Problem
Depleted vitality has created an intolerance for any further stimulation, or demands on her resources. This feeling of powerlessness subjects her to agitation and acute distress. She attempts to escape into a substitute world in which things are more nearly as she desires them to be.

OK, I italicized what I think is true, more or less. At least, the true bits that I could understand.

But doesn't that last sentence under "Actual Problem" sound like any blogger?? :-)

Questions and Answers

Unique
1. Nervous habits?
Nail-biting. I'm better than I used to be, though. I also tend to eat while watching TV, reading and when frustrated and/or bored.
2. Are you double jointed?
No.
3. Can you roll your tongue?
No.
4. Can you raise one eyebrow at a time?
No, much to my frustration!
5. Can you blow spit bubbles?
Yes; I never realized this required talent.
6. Can you cross your eyes?
Yes. And I always hear my mother telling me my face will freeze that way. Besides, it gives me a headache nowadays.
7. Tattoos?
No, and not likely to get one. I keep thinking that it might be cool, and then reminding myself that gravity sucks.
8. Piercing?
One hole in each earlobe. And won't be getting anymore because of my dad's voice in my head. ;-)
9. Do you make your bed daily?
I try to. It's nicer to get into a 'clean' bed.

Clothes
10. Which shoe goes on first?
Right.
11. Speaking of shoes, have you ever thrown one at anyone?
Not in anger, but as a joke, yes. [I missed, mostly intentionally; and it was a sandal.]
12. On the average, how much money do you carry?
$50-100, depending on when I went to the ATM last time.
13. What jewelry do you wear 24/7?
My wedding and engagement rings, and the ring I got for Valentine's day last winter.
14. Favorite piece of clothing?
Jeans and a loose T. No shoes, unless I have to be outside.

Food
15. Do you twirl your spaghetti or cut it?
At home I break it up before cooking it into 4-6" pieces, then I twirl it. On my plate, not on a spoon. In restaurants, I usually cut it up and then twirl. But I don't often have spaghetti in public. [slurp]
16. Have you ever eaten Spam?
Yeah. I liked it when I was a kid, but can't even be near an open can now.
17. Do you use extra salt on your food?
No. Unless it's horrible-tasting!
18. How many cereals in your cabinet?
Probably 3-5 boxes. We don't usually eat cereal for breakfast, so it's for company of for snacking.
19. What's your favorite beverage?
Diet Dr. Pepper. Or water.
20. What's your favorite fast food restaurant?
Hand's down: Culver's. But we don't go there often because it's like a 5000 calorie bomb hitting your butt!
21. Do you cook?
Yes, because we can't afford a household chef.

Grooming
22. How often do you brush your teeth?
Twice a day: just before leaving the house in the morning, and just before bed at night.
23. Hair drying method.
I like to let it air dry, but then I have 'styling issues.' Otherwise, it's a blow dryer when it's about half dry.
24. Have you ever colored/highlighted your hair?
Yes for about five years. Till I'm all gray, then I'll stop. ;-)

Manners
25. Do you swear?
I do. I curse, too. There is a difference.
26. Do you ever spit?
Not on purpose! Oh, except for brushing my teeth.

October. And June. Both for the weather
30. Day.

32. Shoe brand.
Minnetonka. And anything on sale and Famous Footwear.
33. Subject in school.
English, and anything with writing. History, too, since that was my major. Too bad they never had classes in Putting Things in Order (till grad school); those would've rocked!
34. Color.
Blue.
35. Sport.
Football. I love the Olympics, too.
36. TV shows.
I like CSI (the original). And Survivor and Amazing Race. And football games. Used to watch Star Trek all the time, but haven't in about 7 years.
37. Thing to do in the spring.
Open the windows, air out the house, break in my feet on concrete, stop wearing socks....and carry an umbrella.
38. Thing to do in the summer. Bake in the sun, attempt--uselessly--to be any color but white or red, wash the car in the driveway, sit on the porch in the evening.
39. Thing to do in the autumn.
Walk through piles of leaves, go to football games, try not to get depressed about my allergies and the coming onslaught of winter.
40. Thing to do in the winter. Prepare for Christmas, try not to commit suicide after Jan. 1.

In and around
41. In the CD player.
I think I left Joan Osborne's "Relish" in the car one last night. I had NPR on this morning.
42. Person you talk most on the phone with.
Anyone but my mom. No, seriously, the Beast. Then any selection of the following: Amy, Jenny, Sherry, Arlene, and a couple of others I'm sure I'm forgetting.
43. Reading.
Everything from cereal boxes to magazines to books. But a good mystery is usually a safe bet for me.
44. Do you regularly check yourself out in store windows / mirrors?
Uhm, not really, except my hair.
45. What color is your bedroom?
Blue and white. Pale blue carpet, white walls, a newish quilt on the bed in blue, white and reddish, yellow pillowcases, and water-themed photos on the walls.

You know, I've never owned a real alarm clock. I've always used a clock radio. I have a Bose now.
47. Window seat or aisle?
If I'm sleeping on the flight, the window. Otherwise, the aisle; more room to lean.

Dumb
48. What's your sleeping position?
On my left side, curled up. I rarely move, unless I'm not sleeping well.
49. Even in hot weather do you use a blanket?
Yes, or at least a sheet. Drives Beast nuts!
50. Do you snore?
I've been told I do, at times.
51. Do you sleepwalk?
I used to, but not since I grew up.
52. Do you talk in your sleep? N
I've been told I do. Loudly.
53. Do you sleep with stuffed animals?
I didn't as a child, then I picked up the habit in college (safer than sex, right?), stopped after marriage. I did for awhile again after surgery, but not anymore.
54. How about with the light on?
I can sleep with it on. Doesn't bother me.
55. Do you fall asleep with the TV or radio on?
I could do this as a child, but any noise now completely disrupts my sleep. I can doze with the TV on, though.
56. Last interesting person you met?
In real life? Hmmm, probably the Beast's pain-management doctor, who is from Africa.

Old quiz and meme...

from CyberChocolate, from lo these past couple of months:

What Is Your Battle Cry?

Zang! Who is that, running through the desert! It is The Cataloger, hands clutching a vorpal blade! And with a mighty scream, her voice cometh:

"I'm going to smack you with such zeal, your screams will reanimate the dead!"

Take a favorite song's lyrics, use Google Translate Tool and translate it from English to German, then German to French, and finally, French back to English and post the lyrics and see if anyone can guess the song. I'm picking the song on Launchcast right now. It's a song from a musical:
A single feeling, each small stage which it reaches.
A thrilling combination, each measurement which meets it.
To smile and suddenly nobody corner besides.
They know that you are never alone, with knowing.
One moment in its presence and you can forget the remainder,
Because the girl is better any more in the second place with no, wire.
Ooooh! Sigh! Give him your attention.
Do I have to really mention them, am that?
Not bad, for the most part, IF you know the song. Any guesses?

Curse word

Thanks Amy!

Your word is SHIT. You are laid back and relaxed,
and most people like you. You don't especially
want to stand out from the crowd, you are
pretty happy with your lot.

25 questions that won’t change your life

"borrowed" from Jenica

1. When you look at yourself in the mirror, what’s the first thing you look at?
Glasses on? Hair
Glasses off? "Am I really awake?"

2. How much cash do you have on you right now?
Approx $190. I pay cash for groceries, which are on the list of things to buy today after work.

3. What’s a word that rhymes with “TEST”?
My first answer was "best." Jenica used that, so my second choice is "quest."

4. Favourite plant?
Wild: Columbine
"Tame": Rose

5. Who is the 4th person on your missed call list on your cell phone?
Well. I clearly delete these far too often. Mine only goes back three, which is "Church" and dated 7/13.

6. What is your main ring tone on your phone?
LG calls it "Spring." Mostly I have it set on vibrate though, since I don't want it ringing as I walk through the library.

7. What shirt are you wearing?
Basic black stretchy Eddie Bauer T-shirt. I'd link to it on their site, but it doesn't appear to be for sale any longer.

8. Do you “label” yourself?
I'm guessing on this cuz I don't understand the question, but how about "mom", "wife", "daughter", "librarian", "cataloger", lazy-ass chick the green Ford Ranger who needs to stop futzing with the radio and drive!"

9. Name brand of your shoes currently wearing?
Minnetonka leather thongs purchased 3 weeks ago. So comfy.

10. Do you prefer a bright or dark room?
Generally bright. Darkness depresses me. Unless... well, never mind.

11. What did you have for breakfast?
Everything bagel with American cheese, half a can of Diet Dr. Pepper and vitamins.

12. Since question 12 is weirdly missing, make some shit up.
Free advice: Always reread emails BEFORE sending them, especially if your boss in on the TO: list. Then reread them a couple more times before sending.

13. What were you doing at midnight last night?
Sleeping. For a change.

14. What did your last text message you received on your cell phone say?No texts, but oddly, the text area keeps a little record of my phone calls. The last one says:
[my home phone #]
-----------
<1000000000>
08 / 01 / 05
3 : 08 PM
15. Do you ever click on “Pop Ups” or Banners?
What am I? Nuts? No.

16. What’s an expression that you say a lot?
"Okey-dokey." Also, "Fuck." They sort of counterbalance each other.

17. Who told you they loved you last?
Beasty

18. Last furry thing you touched?
Buddy, the guinea pig.

19. How many hours a week do you work?
Supposedly 30. Usually about 34. Lately, less.

20. How many rolls of film do you need to get developed?
None. I have about 6 photos I need to upload so I can post them on another blog.

21. Favourite age you have been so far?
I liked 28-29. Being pregnant was nice; once childbirth was over, having Sparky around was very nice.

22. Your worst enemy?
Me. Definitely

23. What is your current desk top picture?
From this site, centered on a teal background: 51% does not make a mandate!

24. What was the last thing you said to someone?
"Get her address the next time she comes in and I'll go see her." [just found out a former co-worker may have moved up to my neighborhood]

25. If you had to choose between a million bucks or to be able to go back in time and fix all your mistakes which would you choose?
Can I split the difference? I'd only fix a couple of the more bone-headed mistakes and take the $500,000 gladly.
I'm on lunch break so I backed up through the links we've all left and found "the missing quesion"--unfortunately, it has no meaning for me:
12. Last movie you rented from Blockbuster/local video store? Haven't been for eons, can't remember the last one I watched that someone else snagged. Too busy. We did watch part of "10" last night on HBO (I think) for our campiness fix. Ahem--after Sparky was asleep.

Summer Ride

They got it wrong! WRONG!
Your Summer Ride is a Mustang Convertible

You're out to experience the very best of summer.
From the best beaches to the best tan, you want it all!

So totally NOT into the best tan. Try, best orca impression instead.

THIS is the RIGHT answer:
Your Summer Ride is a Jeep

For you, summer is all about having no responsibilities.
You prefer to hang with old friends - and make some new ones.

Yup. That's right.

'za

Pepperoni Pizza

Robust and dominant.
When you go for something, you go full force.
You tend to take control of situations easily.
And in return, you get a ton of respect.

But I'm having stewed chicken tonight. Because who needs "a ton of respect" anyway?

Religious philosophy

You are a Believer

You believe in God and your chosen religion.
Whether you're Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or Hindu..
Your convictions are strong and unwavering.
You think your religion is the one true way, for everyone.

I've ital-ed the 'true' bit. The last line is complete, total bullshit; I don't think this at all. What I really think is that my belief system works for me, and can work for others. But other belief systems can work for people as well. Don't put me in the "one path to God" camp.

These questions were definitely rigged toward non-believers. So, my non-believing freinds, go nuts! :-)

Ideal relationship

WARNING: this is a hard one to use if you're married...
...having said that:
Your Ideal Relationship is Marriage

You've dated enough to know what you want.
And that's marriage - with the right person.
You're serious about settling down some time soon [or possibly 19 years ago]
even if you haven't met the person you want to get hitched to!

See what I mean?

OK, so here's what I think I would've said at age 20 (I changed three answers):
Your Ideal Relationship is Casual Dating

Maybe you're looking for love...
But mostly you're looking for fun.
You could get serious with the right person.
For now, though, you're enjoying playing the field.

Which was about right, I guess, although that was a long time ago! :-)

By the way, the wedding picture looks nothing (NOTHING!) like my wedding photo, but I did have my hair cut the way the dating girl's is cut when I was in college. Briefly.

Addicted?

You Are 80% Addicted to Blogthings

You lead the pack when it comes to posting Blogthings.
And your friends (mostly) thank you for it.
It's cute that you insist on being called your Japanese name.
Just stop bragging about your IQ score!

hee hee hee hee
(I think I may be closer to 100%, but this makes me seem less obsessive so I'll take it!)

Living my life

How You Life Your Life

You seem to be straightforward, but you keep a lot inside.

You're laid back and chill, but sometimes you care too much about what others think.

You prefer a variety of friends and tend to change friends quickly.

Some of your past dreams have disappointed you, but you don't let it get you down.

I've ital-ed the true bits. The part about changing friends...uh, no. I have a friend I've known for 35 years. If anything, I'm a little compulsive about friendship, but trying to get better.
