Deep thoughts

A little outside the purview here. hah

This is a fascinating website I stumbled across: The Philosopher's Magazine

I did the two of the quizzes. Must come back to do the rest....

Do-It-Yourself Deity
The Metaphysical Engineers Report

Our modelling is designed to answer two questions about the conception of God which you offered.

(1) Is the conception of God consistent with itself?
(2) Is the conception of God consistent with the universe that we live in?

The first question asks whether the conception makes sense. For example, a triangle with four sides is a conception which is not consistent with itself, since a triangle has three sides. A triangle with four sides is, in fact, a four-sided three-sided object, which is simply a contradiction in terms. In this sense, the conception is not consistent with itself.

If a conception is consistent with itself, this does not necessarily mean that it refers to something which actually exists. For example, the idea of a six hundred foot monster that lives in liquid steel is not inconsistent. But such a creature does not exist in our world. The second question therefore asks whether your conception of God is consistent with the universe as we understand it.

The metaphysical engineers should explain that any problems they report may reveal one of two things. Some problems may simply reflect their inability to resolve apparent problems. In this sense, the difficulties are a product of their lack of knowledge or understanding. Others may be deeper problems, so fundamental that no amount of increased understanding can resolve them. It is for you to decide which problems fall into which category.

The Report [I checked all the boxes.]

Plausibility Quotient = 0.2

The metaphysical engineers have determined that your conception of God has a plausibility quotient (PQ) of 0.2. A PQ of 1.0 means that as far as the metaphysical engineers can determine your conception of God is internally consistent and consistent with the universe that we live in. A PQ of 0.0 means that it is neither internally consistent nor consistent with our universe. More than likely, your PQ score will be somewhere between these two figures. But remember that this is your PQ score as determined by the metaphysical engineers. The editors of TPM have no control over their deliberations, so don't blame us!

[There are a whole lot more that I didn't copy that deals with each 'definition' of God.]

That is the end of the metaphysical engineers' report. As we said at the beginning, we are not sure that the problems they identify are insuperable. But we do hope that by thinking about them you may come to understand what you mean by God more deeply, and perhaps even revise your former beliefs.

[My take is that of course these problems are insuperable. I have thought about them. In fact, I find it funny that some of them could even be considered insuperable!]

Battleground God - Will your beliefs about God and religion survive on our intellectual battlefield? Now's your chance to find out!

Battleground Analysis
Congratulations!

You have been awarded the TPM service medal! This is our third highest award for outstanding service on the intellectual battleground.

The fact that you have progressed through this activity without suffering many hits and biting only one bullet suggests that whilst there are inconsistencies in your beliefs about God, on the whole they are well thought-out.

The direct hits you suffered occurred because some of your answers implied logical contradictions. The bitten bullet occurred because you responded in a way that required that you held a view that most people would have found strange, incredible or unpalatable. At the bottom of this page, we have reproduced the analyses of your direct hits and bitten bullet.

The fact that you did not suffer many hits and only bit one bullet means that you qualify for our third highest award. Well done!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How did you do compared to other people?
  • 244807 people have completed this activity to date.
  • You suffered 2 direct hits and bit 1 bullet. This compares with the average player of this
activity to date who takes 1.39 hits and bites 1.11 bullets.
  • 38.49% of the people who have completed this activity have, like you, been awarded the TPM Service Medal.
  • 7.50% of the people who have completed this activity emerged unscathed with the TPM Medal of Honour.
  • 45.90% of the people who have completed this activity took very little damage and were awarded the TPM Medal of Distinction.

Geography

This isn't really a meme, it's more of a test. Oh, well.

My scores:
US - 146/150 (I did click correctly on Rhode Island, it's just too small and didn't pick my click up correctly. I messed up on Alabama and got Mississippi instead....duh)
World - 32/33 (it didn't like my answer for Arctic Ocean)
Europe - 92/111 (most of those new little "broken" countries are what messed me up)
Asia - 60/84 (again with the little countries, although I did get all of the Vietnam area right, and Korea)
South America - 35/39 (...sigh)

Resolved:

10 on Tuesday

I must preface this by saying that I don't generally do New Year's resolutions. The tone, therefore, may not have the right amount of gravitas for some. Oh well: deal.

  1. Have a better attitude about my family.
  2. Figure out a strategy for dealing with the negative people around me so that I stop following their lead.
  3. Update Books Read list for 2004. Print off.
  4. Figure out more HTML coding.
  5. Find an exercise program I can stick to.
  6. Really set up Snapfish right.
  7. Send family cards…and others if I can get organized enough.
  8. Develop landscape plan for the yard.
  9. Make something useful with wool and needles (I can knit, but only like Madame Defarge.)
  10. Figure out how to post pictures. Because really I’m not that dumb. Am I?? erk

Pre-lunch break

Tuesday Twosome
Holiday celebrations...

1. Do you celebrate a religious meaning to this season and if so, what (Christmas, Hanukkah, etc.)? If not, why?
Yes, Christmas, after all, means “Christ’s mass,” Christ’s festival. So, yeah, it’s religious. And not meant to worship the great god greed.

2. What does this holiday season mean to you and why?
As a general season, I wish I could achieve the proper sense of anticipation during Advent each year. It usually devolves into panic at least once. This year, however, I haven't hit panic yet, or antipaction for that matter. It's been weird. This particular year will probably be memorable in that The Beast has been sick for most of it. And for my mom going into a nursing home.

3. Which do you enjoy the most: giving presents or receiving presents and why?
I used to live to receive them. I’ve realized over the last 15-20 years that I really prefer giving them. Not sure if I can pinpoint when that swap happened. I still like opening prezzies though…who doesn't.

4. Name two holiday movies that best describe the season for you:“It’s a Wonderful Life” (although I’ve never seen it), and “The Sound of Music” (which I don’t actually consider a Christmas movie, but everyone else does for some reason….). The titles are perfect.

5. Name two holiday songs that best describe the season for you:“Silent Night, Holy Night” (I love Christmas Eve services), and “Joy to the World” (self-explanatory).

Stealing shamelessly...

...because I'm too lazy to go find the proper links. So, thanks to Shelly who found them for me.

"The whole problem can be stated quite simply by asking, 'Is there a meaning to music?' My answer would be, 'Yes.' And 'Can you state in so many words what the meaning is?' My answer to that would be, 'No.'" --- -Aaron Copland

1) Can you play a musical instrument? If so, which one(s)?
Yes. I took piano for 3 or 4 years when I was in elementary school, and I played flute from 7th grade through sophomore year of college, when my college band director and I parted ways. He was a yutz.

2) If you could be part of any band or musical group on the planet, which one would it be and who would you be and why?
Salt 'n Pepa is the first one that springs to mind. Or the B52s.

3) What is your favorite genre of music?
Jeez, almost anything but (most of) the current round of pop/rap. Probably 70s and 80s rock is the most nostalgic, but I like songs from musicals, classical, African pop, raga, reggae...

4) What is your least favorite genre of music?
Opera and rap. (thanks, Shelly) Although I'm starting to 'get' SOME opera. And I like early rap/hip-hop.

5) What was the last song you heard or what are you listening to right now?
Sadly, it was a Nutcracker song played over highlights from a football game earlier this afternoon. Why? Don't know.

Try, try again

I attempted these this week, but the code transferred all weird. So let's try again.
From Amy.

You Are a Seeker Soul

You are on a quest for knowledge and life challenges. You love to be curious and ask a ton of questions. Since you know so much, you make for an interesting conversationalist. Mentally alert, you can outwit almost anyone (and have fun doing it!). Very introspective, you can be silently critical of others. And your quiet nature makes it difficult for people to get to know you. You see yourself as a philosopher, and you take everything philosophically. Your main talent is expressing and communicating ideas.

Souls you are most compatible with: Hunter Soul and Visionary Soul

Oka-a-a-a-ay....not sure about this one.

You have strong relationships and are intensely loyal.

People find you easy to love and care for.

You like your world to be stable and secure, no surprises.

You're cautious. You prefer your inner circle to the outside world.

Yep, this seems about right....

From Jenica who found it here.

What holiday song could you happily never hear again?

Outside of "The Twelve Days of Christmas"? heh

I'm ready to retire "Silver Bells" for about 10 years, primarily because of Sparky's clarinet practicing.

And can I just say Wham's "Next Christmas" IS NOT A CHRISTMAS SONG!!!!
Just because the title contains the word...jeez, listen to the lyrics. How depressing can you get!

All of which doesn't mean I don't like it, but it's not seasonal. OK. I'm done spewing.

Possibilities....

This is called "Band and Song Name Generator." But it's quite useful for blog titles as well. Unfortunately, I can't remember where I saw it, so if it's you, claim your fame.

Regular Memes

New pets

1.How do you feel about having a new pet (or a pet at all, if you don't have one already)?
I'd love to have another dog. I love 'em. But my allergies don't. They are almost as bad as cats in that department. I currently share two guinea pigs with my son, and I think I might be slightly allergic to either them or their food (timothy hay). But they're small and self-contained, so I don't mind.

2. What is the adjustment period like when a new pet comes around?
Depends on the size of the pet. The pigs were easy. Dogs, well, not so much. Never had a cat, don't know. Birds are easy too, but much noisier than one would expect.

3. If you have other animals, how do they take the new pet?
N/A.

Bonus Question for Comments: When choosing a cat or a dog: baby (kitten/puppy) or full-grown? Why?
Baby. Although I can understand why you'd want them to arrive housebroken!!

::Christmas is Coming!::

Onesome: Christmas-- Hey, an easy start for you, what with the new layout and all: What is your favorite Christmas song? ...and sung or played by whom? You know, the one you tend to listen for on the radio or hit 'repeat' on the player...
I like the carols, the 'religious' ones: Silent Night, O Holy Night, Joy to the World (I can always hear my dad doing the tenor part). I also like any that Nat "King" Cole did. I had his kids' Christmas album growing up and still love those songs, done just that way.

Twosome: Is-- Is the longer "Holiday Season" this year between Thanksgiving and Christmas making it easier to get your Christmas act together? Last year's was short; has this year flowed any better for you?
No, because it just doesn't seem like Christmas, so I've put things off and now I'm freaking out. It's a good thing I still have another week to get myself together.

Threesome: Coming-- Ready or not, here it comes! Are you ready? What do you have left to do with just over a week to go? ...or are you just cruising?
I'm nearly ready. I must:

  • Mail boxes. (Friday)
  • Mail cards. (starting Friday)
  • Wrap teacher gifts. (Tonight!!)
  • Wrap family gifts. (Whenever)
  • Wrap pseudo-family gifts (Whenever)
  • Buy/Wrap other gifts--cleaning lady, mailman, etc. (This weekend)
  • Filler gifts--the ones that I realize I've forgotten. (Next week, since I don't know what I've forgotten yet!)
I'm actually in pretty good shape. With that statement, I've bought karma crashing onto my head.

...and more

3xThursday

1.During the busy week, what do you do to relax?
Ha ha ha ha

That's not meant to be a joke? OK, I read. I do crosswords. I take a bath if there's really a lot of time.

No. That's still a joke.
2. Are you ever just *so* busy that if you don't take a break, you'll explode? How do you handle situations like that?
Yes.

I cry. I get a headache, and I plow through. Usually shouting at someone works too, but it's pretty counterproductive.
3. How do you keep yourself from becoming overwhelmed? What happpens when you *do* become overwhelmed? How do you calm yourself down?

I don't. I overwhelm myself on purpose, I think. Years of training have done this to me.

When I'm overwhelmed I get extremely pissy, shout a lot, and cry. Although I do less crying now than I did 20 years ago. Is that progress?

To calm down, I either take a nap or deal with the problem. Sometimes even both!

Bonus Question: How do you get thru a stressful day?
Head down, push through it. Breathing helps. Headphones help a lot. Crying helps, unless I have a headache.

It's that time

Thursday Threesome

Onesome- Dashing through the snow: Do you get much snow where you live? Do you enjoy winter sports like skiing or would you rather stay in by the cozy fire?

It's normal to get snow all winter here, although last year we were gypped; I think we had one storm. I like the snow, but I'd like it to go away by February. On the other hand, I don't like snowless cold at all. I guess I just will never be happy in the winter!

I don't ski. Panting in cold weather kicks my asthma over. So, fireside, yes; good book, yes.

Twosome- In a one horse open sleigh: Have you ever been on a sleigh ride or a carriage ride? Do you even like horses? Or would you just rather travel by your own two feet?

Our town has carriage rides every December around the Square. It's fun. I always forget about it until the really cold days and getting the rest of the family excited about standing in line and then riding in frigid temps is...difficult.

My most memorable (only?) sleigh ride was in a troika in Siberia, a ride that was followed by shots of vodka, potato pancakes, and the Chicken Dance. Surreal? Yep.

Threesome- O'er the fields we go: What's the first thing that pops into your mind when someone says field? Corn? Football field? Outfield?
Meadow. Corn, yeah, or flowers. More likely to think football than baseball, if I get to sports at all. Otherwise, an old joke: "Out standing in her field."

Closing Time

Saturday 8

1. do you have all 4 of your biological grandparents?
Nope; they've all been dead for between 30 and 60 years.

2. do you live close to your immediate family members? if not, how far away are they?
Yes, one niece and two nephews live fairly close-by. Others live in Europe, Tennessee, Ohio, New York, Colorado, Texas.

3. my mum ordered a turkey dinner from a local market. it was o.k., but not very good. how was your turkey this year?
OK, but not enough meat. Must buy bigger next year...

4. after being diagnosed with CIN2 pre-cancer of the cervix, i'm thankful for my health this year the most. how about you? what are YOU thankful for this year?
Health. Happiness. Love.

5. after my turkey splurges, i'm going to be dieting soon ... in the middle of the holiday season. have you ever dieted, and if so, have you tried to do it during a difficult time? (birthday, religious holiday, work parties, etc.) how did it come out?
Dieting doesn't work for me. I did give up processed sugar for Lent about 5 years ago. I lost about 10 lbs. Have since gained it back, and more.

6. tell us about your favourite thanksgiving dish.
Stuffing. I'm pretty easy to please.

7. where was your thanksgiving celebration this year? did you host, or go elsewhere?
In my dining room. Which is still trying to recover.

8. describe your dream thanksgiving ... where is it, who is attending, what is served?
My house I grew up, the whole family around the table (all 19+ people), the usual fixin's. Games afterwards, once the dishes have been finished.

Friday's Feast

Appetizer Tell about a toy you remember from your childhood.
I played with my brother's toy (i.e. Matchbox) cars endlessly in the summers. Strangely, I don't remember playing with them inside much at all. We had flagstones along the driveway in front of our house, and I would park all the cars on the 'first' stone, emptying the box rather ritualistically. Then I'd drive them one by one to the next stone, then to the next, but I've forgotten The Rules. I rarely made it past the third or fourth stone; the practical reason was because there was actually grass growing in strong and it was much easier to drive the cars in dirt. But The Rules took that into account...I just don't remember exactly how. These games went on for hours. At least that's my memory of them. Kids' time being what it is, they probably only lasted 20 minutes or so.

I still have those cars, intermingled with The Beast's and Sparky's. They have multiplied until now I think we must have close to 100 little cars. We may even have my oldest nephew's cars as well...
Soup If you could make one thing in the world absolutely free for everyone, what would it be?
As I sit here eating a Pop-Tart: I'd like to radically restructure food distribution so everyone had enough to eat. We produce enough food, but it just isn't evenly organized around the world.
Salad Approximately how many times per day do you think about your significant other?

I love this question! After 18 years of marriage, knowing each other for [damn!] 22 years...I think about The Beast probably hourly at least. Sometimes it's just a passing thought: "Beast would like this joke." Other times I have a question about insurance or something boring like that. There are occasions when I just want to hear his voice to reassure me that things are ok, with him, with us, with life.

And that's leaving out all the worrying I do!
Main Course Name something you believe in 100%.

2) Was more patient with Sparky. (not enough times)
3a) All those Reference questions....do they count? There is usually one, maybe two, a week that I really go a lot further than I probably need to because the patron is so desperately needy.
3b) If they don't count, my last answer is 'smile.' (even when I have no reason to do so)

Thursday Threesome

It's been a long while since I did this:

Onesome: Dancing-- Dancing? Does anyone go dancing anymore? I mean, disco died, and the club scene? Hmmm... Is dancing dead? ...or are we just here on the web instead of out for the evening?
I think people only dance at weddings now. The Beast and I have been trying to get our schedules arranged to take a dancing class, but it just keeps not working out. Perhaps this is the year?
Twosome: Polar-- Polar bears seem to do well in the snow... How about you? Is snow just another thing you deal with when it shows up, or is it shutdown time? ...and if you're posting from a non-snowy locale, do you make trips to actually see snow? It's okay to admit it...
Love the first few snows of the year. But winters here last till April; it has snowed Easter weekend the past three years. That is just so WRONG!
Threesome: Bears-- Bears? Christmas Bears? Have you seen the number of bears on the shelf this year? Are you getting one for anyone? ...or are you looking forward to receiving one? ...or do you still think that inguana in the elf outfit is more your style ?
I've been thinking about getting my mom a teddy bear, either for her birthday (12/27) or Christmas. I've a quiet affection for bears, but they must be soft and squishable, not like Ty's which are too small and crunchy.
I've now typed these answers six times; Blogger keeps eating it. grrowwllll

What kind of little girl were YOU?
brought to you by Quizilla

To take these points in order:

YES: sweet and quiet I'll buy, solitude was really my only choice in my neighborhood and family, there were multiple imaginary friends, paid attention, shy, Mom didn't worry about me and my (lack of) social skills, now a bit more outgoing, philosophical

NO: loved flowers?? hah Try "drafted to work in the garden under extreme protest." No eye for detail. I missed a bunch of stuff. VERY shy, other kids DID pick on me, but I knew there was nothing really wrong with me (self-parenting). Not sure I'm the poster child for introversion. Not sure I'm an observer, but I will cop to intuitive.
