Saturday 9

(Link in meme-roll)
Stars and Stripes Forever by The Muppets
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
Memorial Day is the federal holiday designated to honor American service people who died in battle. Though our song choice is humorous, we honor their sacrifice in our hearts.

1) Memorial Day was introduced after the Civil War. War memorials, as well as the graves of veterans, are to be decorated with flags and flowers on this day to show our appreciation. Is there a war memorial in your neighborhood?
Nope. There are a lot of flags flying though. Ours will be out tomorrow and Monday.
2) Andrew Johnson, our 17th President, was in office the first time Memorial Day (then called Decoration Day) was celebrated. Have you ever met one of our 45 Presidents?
No. And I kind of hope I never have to at this point. I'd love (LOVE!) to meet Michelle Obama, though.
3) According to the AAA, 36 million Americans will hit the road this weekend and drive more than 50 miles. Will you be traveling far from home this weekend?
Not at all. We have church tomorrow, maybe a movie, probably dinner out, then just hanging out on Monday then 1100 miles of racing. Monday we'll do the movie and dinner out.
4) Memorial Day kicks off the summer season. What's your favorite picnic food?
I love my mom's potato salad. Can't buy it anywhere. She used red potatoes, onions, mustard, mayo and some other stuff that I can't quite figure out.
5) Have you packed away your winter clothes? Or is the weather still so changeable that you still may need something warm?
In this state you don't really pack them away so much as push them back where they are retrievable when the temperatures hit 40 in July. Last summer, August felt like October. ETA: I have put away my winter shoes: No More Boots! Hello Toesies!!
6) As you answer these questions, is there an air conditioner or fan on?
Nope. It's only about 65 degrees out. Front door is open. I need to go up and open some windows and do some cleaning/dusting before Sparky arrives.
7) This week, we are featuring the Muppets. Jim Henson made the first Muppet out of an old coat, and he used ping pong balls for the eyes. Do you have a talent for do-it-yourself/arts and crafts projects?
I do NOT. I am reasonably good at "finagling" to make things work but not at creativity.
8) Random question: Think of the last thing you bought. Did you get a good deal?
The last thing I bought was gas. And, it being Memorial Day weekend, the price was higher than usual. Oh well.... I was down to 20 miles on the tank, so needs must.
9) Crazy Sam needs your help: What song or a performer would you like to see featured in a Saturday 9 this summer? You'll begin seeing your suggestions as Saturday 9 themes in mid-June. Thanks!
I think some Ariana Grande would be nice. Haim's "Want You Back" is good. "Something Just Like This" (The Chainsmokers & Coldplay) is good. Harry Styles' "Sign Of The Times" is pretty good. Imagine Dragons' "Believe" is great. ANYTHING from the Hamilton soundtrack would be a blast!!

I am off to listen to your music selections. I don't know Haim or Harry Styles' songs.

We are going through a weather whip here, too. Last week or so, 94* in the shade, today, a cloudy 68.
Liked your song list.
Reading about your Mom's potato salad, is it German potato salad? They use red potatoes. I use steamed red potatoes for my version of my Gran's potato salad- which is a Midwestern recipe. Some Celery seed goes in the dressing, too. I'm sooo curious now. Her recipe was posted on my blog awhile back. Maybe there will be clues?
Have a happy, relaxed week

Kwiz: Harry Styles is The Cute One from One Direction. He's not breaking much new ground, but it's fun. Haim was on SNL recently and we enjoyed watching the bassist--the song was good too.

Zippi: yes, celery seed! And I think it has to be scallions/green onions, not regular onion. It's def German, but NOT the horrible vinegary-sour kind. Though there's vinegar in Mom's too...it just reminds me of eating on a blanket in the mountains....

*sighs with Cat* Yes, it brings back memories, so it does.
My gran was "hill folk" Scot's Irish and Welch, and she learned it from her mom. So, it's probably not the German version.
I also use pickle juice to thin the dressing, and put some chopped dill and sweet pickles into the salad. I don't use Scallions, either but the mildest of the round onions, whether red or Hawaiian. Let's figure this all out! A Mystery to be solved!

My mom has an unusual potato salad recipe, too. She doesn't like mayo so she uses french dressing. I grew up on it and like it a lot.

I like my potato salad with less *stuff* rather than more. I guess I have a very unsophisticated potato salad palate. ;)

Harry Styles is a great choice!

I'm stunned at how many of us like potato salad! Who knew?!

And Gal, I think potato salad isn't something that is "right" one way or another. They do it ALL WRONG in Wisconsin, though. Beware.
