Ode to Billie Joe (1967)
If you're not familiar with today's song, you can hear it here.

1) This song takes places on "the third of June," which is described as "another sleepy, dusty" day. Describe the weather where you were on Friday, June 3, 2016.
From what I know it was warm and muggy, though not rainy or excruciatingly hot. It wasn't sleepy or dusty. It's never dusty here. I miss dusty days.
2) In this song, the family sits down to eat and discuss the doings of their friends and neighbors. Mama, Papa, Brother and Sister were at the table. Who did you have dinner with on Friday?
We ate at M!xteca, outside. It was lovely weather for it, but it took 45 for freakin' nachos and I had to leave after about 8 bites for a meeting. That was irritating. But they have such good salsas--four of them!--for the chips....
3) Young Billie Joe MacAllister playfully put a frog down another kid's back. Do you see many frogs where you live?
I haven't seen too many this year, but I sure HEARD them a few weeks ago! Holy crow, they were anxious to procreate!
4) This song made Mississippi's Tallahatchie Bridge famous. What's the name of a bridge in your neighborhood?
We don't seem to name our bridges right around here. There aren't any that are very impressive, anyway. About 60 miles north of us is what locals call The Bridge to Nowhere. It's famous, having been in a VERY popular movie about 30 years ago....
5) Bobbie Gentry often performed with Glen Campbell. Mr. Campbell's family is very open about Glen's battle with Alzheimer's. Is anyone in your life facing this terrible disease?
My father-in-law had some issues with dementia, though I suspect it was more medication and alcohol-fueled than mental.
6) "Ode to Billie Joe" was made into a movie directed by Max Baer, Jr. Mr. Baer is better known for playing Jethro Bodine in a famous 1960s era sitcom. Can you name it?
The Beverly Hillbillies, of course. Also, Robbie Bensen! Man, half my class had a crush on him around the time this movie came out!
7) Bobbie Gentry made one of her last public appearances in 1981 on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Johnny is now seen in reruns on the Antenna TV channel. Think of the last TV show you watched. Was it new or was it a rerun?
We're watching DVR'd Deadliest Catch from a couple of weeks ago right now. It's from this season, but DVR=rerun? I'm not sure.
8) In 1967, when this song was popular, Sweden changed its traffic laws and Swedes began driving on the right. Have you ever driven in a foreign country? If so, did you have a hard time adapting to their laws?
I haven't driven but I have relatives in England so I've definitely ridden there a lot. It's quite terrifying for the first day, especially in traffic, and then you get used to it. Then you come home and freak out for the first hour you're on the road here.
9) Random question: Which would you rather have more of -- compliments or hugs?
Hugs. I find that I might have been under-hugged as a child. Compliments can be faked but a good squeezy hug can't be faked. And yes, they have to be squeezy not "polite" hugs.
