I've since concluded that for beliefs in divine or heavenly power to be sustained, for them to be comforting, it is imperative that no one call them into question. For too many people, the prospect that God or angels or Jesus or Allah or Elohim doesn't or can't intervene to protect us from suffering and evil is ground shifting and consequently terrifying.
