I temped one summer, while also working as a summer C.E. intern at my church. The temping was very interesting.

I suppose the time I went to a guy's apartment and listened to him prate on about British pop music. He was trying to edu-ma-cate me.

Do you think the age for a driver's license should be raised (currently 16 here in the U.S.)?

Nope. I think we need to do a better job at training drivers, and re-educating on a regular basis.

1. What's the most exciting thing you have planned for this weekend?

Last night's play was pretty fun. There's a concert tomorrow. And youth group meetings are never short on excitement--that's tomorrow night.

Participating in rebuilding D'Iberville, MS. Or spending 10 days in Italy with no Italian language skills, no guidebook, limited money and glorious freedom.

1) When did you have the weakest self-confidence ever?

Junior high has to take the cake here!

{{shudder}}...the mere thought makes my skin crawl. No one.

3) How old were you when you realized that other people's families live totally differently from yours?

It started with my babysitter in first grade; her family was 7th Day Adventist and vegetarian; to this day, I'm not sure if saying that is redundant--can you be the former without being the latter? Anyway, that started the process.

Then, I have a vivid memory of dropping a friend off at her house when we were in high school and seeing her mom in a robe on their front lawn, obviously under the influence. I think that was when I realized that we never know what's going on behind the doors of other people's houses.

I think I love this couch. It looks wonderfully comfy both to sit and to lie down. I fell asleep on our couch yesterday and didn't even hear the phone ring when my mom and sister called. Oops. But I'd've wakened more refreshed, I think, if I'd have been on the loveseat in the photo.

1. What is the last drink you drank at home?

I'm currently drinking Diet Pepsi (I know, I know, alert the media, it's not DDP, but most stores don't sell that in the gimme lanes). The last "drink" drink I had was vodka lemonade on Sunday last.

2. You’re ordering a latte: do you prefer caffeine or decaf? Flavored or regular? Lowfat or regular?

If you see me ordering a latte, it's either not for me, or an alien life form has taken over my body.

3. What is the last non-alcoholic drink you ordered at a restaurant?

"Diet whatever" at brunch today.

4. What’s the most exotic mixed drink you remember trying? Did you enjoy it?

What's exotic? To me, that would mean scotch on the rocks (yuck, by the way). The concept of mojitos makes me gag a little. I like mimosas, Long Island iced teas, tequila sunrises, electric lemonades, and cosmos. I think I like hurricanes, but they are mighty sweet--not sure I could finish a whole one. Also Stoli straight with a twist. Take your pick.

I did this almost 3 years ago and but I've retaken it...and got the same exact result. Too bad it sounds positively FOUL to drink.

The Great Outdoors

1. When did you last sleep in a tent?

   It was 6 years ago this August, I think. Coldest MFing August ever, and rainy. I nearly froze.
   

   Never.          Ever.              Again.

2. What comes to mind when you think about relieving yourself in the great outdoors?

When I was 10, my parents bought a little house in the mountains. Technically, it was a garage, a shop, set on the highway but with a long 'backyard' with woods and with an IN-CRED-IBLE view of the mountains from anywhere on the property. We spent the next 7 years rehabbing it into a one-bedroom cabin with a bay window, plus a galley kitchen, and a full bathroom. The major problem was that the bathroom never drained quite right--or at all. So mostly we did the bears-in-the-woods thing, especially in winter. So, yeah, that's what comes to mind when I think of outdoor 'plumbing.' [aside: the summer after my freshman year in college, my dad and I dug a 12x12x12-foot septic pit in the side area of the house...by hand...lined it with concrete blocks cemented together, and laid out the septic field. Dad was 63 and I wasn't about to have him show me up, but I nearly died from lack of oxygen and sheer agony.]

3. Where’s the best place you ever went camping?

   I have never in my life enjoyed camping, but the most scenic was probably Yellowstone. My sister had just had a baby, so she and her family got a cabin. We camped. See first phrase in this answer.

4. What’s your favorite camp food?

   Hot. I just want my food properly cooked. In my experience, it is usually half-heated. And the parts that shouldn't be are usually soggy. Really, this is not my favorite activity at all. I don't even really like s'mores....

5. What’s your sleeping bag like?

   It is burgundy nylon on the outside and red/blue plaid on the inside. I believe it's the warmest one we've got. I use it--on an air mattress--on our youth mission trips. We sleep in Sunday School wings of churches, which is hardly roughing it.

"If you expect to have salad in the summer, you really have to plant the veggies NOW!" It will be interesting to discover if I actually do it this weekend, though.

Household Appliances Edition

1. What is the one appliance you simply couldn't be without?

Fridge. But...it's a close call.

2. What if anything would you happily give up?

We have a blowdryer that only works for about 5 minutes at a time. I keep it for emergencies. Which, yes, is silly.

Uh? Yeh. Um, most people would probably consider the heated mattress pad strange, but I love it.

The Roomba. We are set to pick up our third--the first two we've worn out. In two years. WTF?

LOTS of counter space, with granite tops. Glass-topped oven. Side-by-side ice-making fridge/freezer. Toaster oven, microwave, dishwasher, mega cupboard space, a wine rack (a cooler for wine would be neato too), a ginormous pantry, and a three-basin aluminum sink. I'm about 80% there.

Story Time Edition

1.) Tell us how you picked the blog nickname that you write under. (IE: I am Pink Vodka Bubbles) Were you considering using a different pseudonym or was the one you wound up with your first pick?

I started my blogs using my real first name. Quite soon, I changed to "The Cataloger" and then shortened it to "Cat." though I still use The Cataloger on my work/book blogs.

2.) Tell us about your worst oral sex experience.

No.

3.) Tell us about the most fun night you've had in the last two months [sic] time.

There've been several youth group meetings that have been pretty fun. Also, if it still falls in the right timeframe, the night at the pub with Amy and my boys was pretty spectacular.

4.) If you were in a restaurant sitting down ready to order and you saw something that grossed you out enough to make you get up right then and leave without ever ordering, tell us about what you saw to make you react that way.

I haven't ever had that happen, but any kind of vermin would do it. I'd leave at any point during the meal, and I so wouldn't pay, either!

5.) Tell us about your favorite childhood toy.

It sorta depends on the year. When I was really little, it was probabl Raggedy Anne. Then I got a Barbie, and a Skipper, and there were Dawn Dolls too. And my brother's metal toy cars (i.e. Hot Wheels). Mostly there was the jump rope and jacks, though. I used both of those incessently!!

6.) Tell us about the weirdest sexual proposition you've ever been faced with.

Over the years, I have been directly and indirectly propositioned by guys while working at the Reference Desk. They've all been icky, except one. Well that was sorta icky too since Teh Girlfriend was standing right there. And there was the time when my husband informed me, after I was done, that a patron was checking out my legs while I was helping him; that was sorta awkward.

7.) Tell us about one of the not-so-good dates you and your current (or ex if you have no current) significant other have gone on.

There was the time I mentioned in a post recently when we were refused admittance to a popular bar on the south side of Milwaukee--the city in which Harley-Davidson engins are built--because we were wearing (clean, newish, unadorned-with-patches) H-D jackets. No other gear. Just the jackets. On a Friday night.

Cuz, yeah, bikers are so baaaad. Btw--never owned a motorcycle (not yet). And we could not possibly have looked more like yuppies-wearing-leather.

Do you recycle? Why or why not?

This question, 15 minutes after I told Sparky, "Just pitch [the aluminum baking pan]. It's too much trouble to rinse out and recycle." So yes, I do, but apparently only when it' convenient. I'll plead an exception tonight anyway: horrific headache. I may have to -- GASP! -- abstain from further computer-ing, in fact.

Would you rather be a pirate or a prince/princess?

I remember feeling distinctly 'princessy' (or at least celebrity-ish) in Russia toward the end of my time there. Life was so different for us--in our high-end Western-style hotel--compared to the overwhelming mass of the people living unaware of the impending end-times of the Soviet system. Being so separate and coddled was very uncomfortable to this egalitarian American chick. I noticed how it was changing me in a bad way when I had a temper tantrum over the beryozka being closed at 3 p.m. and thus depriving me of potable beverages of a non-alcoholic variety. "Stupid way to run a country! Who closes a store in the middle of the afternoon?!" And then, "Damn, get over yourself, bitch," resounded in my head when I realized our tour guide had heard me griping, she of the skunk-striped hair and the B52 bra and 5-year-out-of-date fashion. Because, that was top-of-the-line in the Soviet Union, and she had spent 6 hours that day touring us around, would spend another 4 hours after dinner shepherding us to the opera (yawn--Rossini sung in Russian); the in-between hours were probably spent standing in several lines to buy whatever food the shops had for her to take home. Spoiled little bitchy American = me.

I have no interest in robbing and killing people, which is, as near as I can tell, the job description for Pirate.

Nope. I have created several star charts over the years, but it's pretty amazing that, if you leave the dates and names off the charts (or the daily predictions), they can be applied almost indiscriminately to people. Methinks, therefore, that astrology may be a humbug.

Easter

What are your Easter traditions? Church. Candy. Ham. I like sunrise service but our church didn't do one this year, and I was at both the 'regular' services. We'll be eating ham all week.

Do you hard boil and decorate eggs? I stopped doing that years ago. I'm the only one who would eat them, aside from (maybe) one that Sparky would eat one Easter morning. I don't like hard-boiled eggs that much, and I can't countenance wasting food after faffing about so much with it.

How do you decorate your home for Easter? The only 'season' I do is Christmas. I can't handle all the pastel and bunnies this time of year.

Do you make/buy special outfits for yourself and your kids on Easter? I got new clothes this week for Easter (plus spring/summer) for the first time in years. Sparky didn't want anything. Who am I to force him to buy clothes he won't want to wear!?

When did you learn the truth about the Easter Bunny? Probably about 8? This was never as big a deal as Santa.

What are your favorite Easter hymns and/or choir arrangements? We heard all three versions of "Christ the Lord is Risen Today" at church today, plus the Hallelujah Chorus. Those were good. There was also another hymn that I really love that we sang today, but I can't remember the title right now.

How many Easter egg hunts does your family usually participate in? Sparky's kinda old for that sort of thing.

Do you make deviled eggs out of leftover Easter eggs? Nope.

Are you tired of eggs by the end of the Easter Season? Not the way I was when I had to eat two dozen decorated eggs!

What company makes the best chocolate for Easter time? Meh. I bought the guys Dove bunnies (dark for Beast, milk for Sparky). They didn't complain. I like Cadbury, too.

Do you find plastic Easter grass hidden in places for months after Easter is over? Not months. Maybe a couple of weeks, if I haven't vacuumed for awhile.

I Forget

Have you forgotten anything in the past week? If so, what? I forget things pretty often, but this week I managed to remember things that needed doing. Let's hope that continues.

Are you usually scatter-brained or more organized? I'm VERY scatter-brained. It takes conscious, slow thought, for me to organize my behavior.

Do you use any sort of planner or agenda for your dates? Does it help to not forget? I use a calendar daybook backed up by a dry-erase refrig scheduler for the family, and the Outlook tasks at work for reminders of regular chores that need doing.

What do you feel about the phrase "forgive and forget?" It reminds me of Mrs. Becker, my early childhood caregiver; she ALWAYS said that. Somewhere along the line, I have gotten the impression that this is really NOT what Jesus was all about, so now I prefer to forgive and make note of, kind of like "trust but verify."

1. What is your current obsession? Today: shoving as much processed sugar in my mouth as possible to make up for Lent. Kinda defeats the teaching point of Lent...sigh. Generally: Word Spasm on Facebook.

18. What’s the best movie that you’ve seen recently? "Tropic Thunder" was much funnier, and better, than I anticipated. But I had very low expectations, too.

Enjoying Your Holiday

1. There are several religious holidays going on this weekend. Any plans?

I'm at church for both services tomorrow, though I probably could bug out early from the second one. I think I'm only "on duty" for the beginning of each service. Then we're having FIL over for dinner and to watch golf. Woo. Hoo. (on the latter--I'm all for the food!)

2. Do you look forward to holiday events or do they stress you out?

They only stress me out if I'm forced to have people in my home that I don't care for. Y'know, sometimes relatives aren't all they're cracked up to be. This year = no stress.

3. Do you have any traditional meals that you will eat?

Obligatory ham. Obligatory potatoes. The rest of the fixin's. Also, strawberries. FIL wanted tapioca pudding (yuck) for dessert, so we're down with the taps. And there's Edy's Samoa chunk ice cream for me.

4. We are changing seasons. What are you looking forward to?

The return of signs of life. The tulips are blooming in our yard! The birdies are EVERYdamnwhere, and so are the deer. The grass is visible again, if not quite greened up just yet.

5. Around here it is turning to spring. What signals spring to you?

I love fall.

7. Do you have a favorite food when dining out?

Pasta alfredo. Tiramisu. A good steak cooked well. Not all of these, of course. One of them is sufficient.

   Is one of the options here "milk chocolate"? Cuz, I don't like bitter chocolate, and white chocolate isn't really chocolate. I'm not sure what light is, unless that's carob, which {shudder} makes me gag.

2. Do you like to receive an egg with a gift (like a mug, etc.) or just the chocolate egg?

   What about actual eggs? And Peeps {more shuddering}? I just want the sugar, to be honest, though. It's been a Very Long Lent.

   I have, but I was a little too old to appreciate it. I do enjoy hiding the eggs. We did this with Sparky for over 10 years, in fact, well past his natural egg-hunting age.

   I always think I should do this, but I never get around to it.

1. What is the last spice you used when cooking something at home?

You are assuming I've cooked something from scratch here at home in recent memory! lol Let's see, probably...chili powder. Honestly, I haven't cookied in eons. Weeks. Everything I've made at home has been Dinner by Design or out of a box. Sigh. I suck.

2. How many varieties of mustard are in your refrigerator right now?

I think there are three brands--one 'regular' yellow and two spiced-up ones. Funny, since I'm the only one who likes the 'non-regular' and I rarely eat it.

3. How many different drinks are in your refrigerator right now?

Milk, lemonade, DDP, diet Pepsi, Sprite, champagne, white wine...maybe a random beer? There are some multiples of some of those, but I think that's everything.

4. Which spice do you least like the taste of?

Hmmmm...I don't taste spices by themselves, so I'm assuming this means in combination with other food. I'm not a huge fan of tarragon, though I'll eat it. I can't think of anything I wouldn't eat, actually.

Q1 - Pictures: Privacy groups in the United Kingdom want Google's 'Street View' service to go away. In support of the effort, residents of the village of Broughton in Buckinghamshire formed a human barrier to stop Google from photographing their village last week, expressing fears that an online display of the resulting images was an invasion of their privacy and would contribute to the facilitation of future crime. Would you object to Google's Street View vehicles driving through your neighborhood and taking and displaying on-demand pictures that included your home?

Oh, please. There is a link--at least in the U.S.--where you can ask that the view of your house be changed. Street View has been through my--semi-rural, by the way--neighborhood and there's literally NOTHING to see. We obviously weren't home at the time, but there's no datestamp (that I'm aware of) so I'm not bothered. It is a huge help in navigating to someplace you've never been to "streetview" the turns so you can see what the corners look like.

This makes me laugh, because CCTV is, literally, EVERYwhere in England. And these folks are worried about Google? Hah.

Q2 - Assurances: As we worry less about what car we drive to work and more about whether we have a job to drive to, car companies are throwing us a security blanket of sorts. Hyundai offers protection for new buyers who lose a job and can't make their monthly auto payment. General Motors, Ford, and Saturn recently followed with programs that provide varying degrees of protection to distressed customers. If you were in the market for a new car, would you be swayed by one of these assurance programs?

Q3 - Optimism: President Obama said this week that the U.S. economy is showing signs of progress as a series of his administration's policies begin to kick in, despite mounting unemployment and rising foreclosures. In remarks to reporters, the President said: "What you're starting to see is glimmers of hope across the economy," adding that it's too soon to make any firm pronouncements. Do you agree with the President's opinion?

Yes. Then again, I'm a sucker for optimism. But seriously, I do think there is a faint glint of sunlight at the end of the tunnel, which means we're still in the tunnel, mind you, but at least there are some signs that we will come out of it.

Our Third Meme About Blogging

1. How did you come up with your blog title OR what does it mean?

My main blog is based on lyrics of a song playing off what I know to be true when I write it. This blog is also based on a song, as a pun.

2. What are your general goals for blogging?

Kill time, rant, keep a diary, pass along info, bookmark things for myself for future reference.... It all depends on the day.

3. Do people "in your real life" know that you blog and do they comment on your blog OR is it larely [sic] anonymous?
How often do you post (x per week)?

Some people know. Most of my extended family does NOT, and there are several work colleague who don't know. Some do. However it's set up as pretty anonymous--I don't use ANYone's real name. I usually post, somewhere, every day.

4. How often do you read other blogs (x per week)?

Every day. I have 152 feeds in Bloglines and most are updated at least twice a week, and many of them are nearly daily. I need to weed again.

5. How do you select blogs to read (do you prefer blogs that focus on certain topics or do you choose by tone or…?)

I used to have close to 75 library-related blogs that I read. I'm down to less than 20 now, and those are where the weeding will commence. Several dozen of the feeds on Bloglines are memes, so those will stay. I mostly stick with people I either know IRL or have met in Blogland and gotten to know, and I like people with a sense of humor and humility and intelligence.

6. Do you have any plans to copy your blog entries in any other format, or do you think that one day, you’ll just delete it all?

About four months ago, I started moving things to WordPress. I should probably just dump everything into a Word document and save it that way. It'd be just as fast.

7. What are the things you like best about blogging?

I like to write. Blogging also saves me from blathering on and on to my husband; I use up my daily quota of words here instead of on his ears.

8. What are the things you don’t like about blogging?

Well, transferring to other formats is annoying because it's all done LIFO rather than FIFO. And some blogs are incoherent, self-important, and/or pointless.

9. How do you handle comments?

Way back when I started, Blogger didn't have comments, so I use Haloscan. I still prefer the Haloscan 'look' much more than Blogger's gacky layout. I think I've only ever banned one person, and that was eons ago. Have never had a problem with spam. Ever.

10. Do you have any burning thoughts to share on blog etiquette?

Be nice on other people's sites, especially if you don't know them. Talk to them as if you were standing in their living room, not shouting at them from a protest march on the street.

11. Any desired blog features?

I've pretty much done what I want to do.

Yup. Badly. It's ongoing.

Saturday Six

1. If money was tight, which of the following would you be most likely to give up: cable television, internet access or your cell phone?

Cable/Satellite. No contest. I can watch online. ;-)

2. Of that same list, which would be least willing to part with?

Cell phone. I could use the net at work, but I have become very dependent on texting and calling whenever I 'need' to talk to someone.

3. Your car dies: the only car you can afford, without going into serious debt, is a demo model that doesn’t have working air conditioning or heat. Assuming that it cannot be fixed (or that you can’t afford the repair) could you get by with that car?

Well, I've driven a car like this in the past, so...sure. I figure as long as the engine, mechanical parts (brakes, cables, etc.), and tires are in great shape, then I'm good. Anyway, there would be no long trips in the winter, and that would save even more money!
By the way, why would a car like this be a demo?? Who'd buy that model? :-)

4. If remote controls ceased to exist tomorrow, would you watch less television or about the same amount?

I personally would choose to watch less. However, the reality of the situation is that I don't choose most of what we watch anyway, so things would probably dip only slightly.

Time Out Edition

1. What restores you physically?

Sleep and Facebook. I mean, reading. A book. {oops}

2. What strengthens you emotionally/mentally?

Reading, laughing, talking to friends.

3. What encourages you spiritually?

Today, it was seeing God's Spirit working in my life. Both seeing it, and being aware enough to see it. Also, kids. Youth group is a grace-filled time most every meeting.

4. Share a favourite poem or piece of music from the coming week.

Oh, I dunno. I'm playing in bell choir, but really--I can' remember any of the songs right now.

5.There may be many services for you to attend/ lead over the next week, which one are you most looking forward to and why? If there aren't do you have a favourite day in Holy week if so which one is it?

I love Tenebrae. It carries me for weeks.
