![]() You are Athena! Born from the head of Zeus himself, this goddess is the most respected and capable of all the goddesses. Friday Fiver
Why do you build me up?
1. Who never returns your phone calls?
...heh, I'm afraid I'm more likely to be the non-returner than to have this happened to me... I can't think of anyone I spend a lot of time waiting to call. I don't play that game.2. What was your favorite childhood toy?
My brother's Matchbox cars, my jumprope, and my jacks set.3. Who is the last person you greeted at your door?
The ONLY people who come to my front door are sales people and kids asking for Sparky. I think the most recent was next-door L. looking for him last Monday.4. Who do you need?
As in "I can't live without you/I can't breathe without you..."? No one. But I'd find it a very dark life if Sparky and Beast weren't in it.5. Do you break hearts or do you have your heart broken?
I don't honestly know. My heart breaks daily, a little, every time I hear bad news, but I'm not sure if I give as good as I get.

If you could live in any ancient city during the height of the quality of its society and culture, which one would you choose?
If I could also be a wealthy man, I'd choose Rome. They had plumbing.Salad
What is the most exciting event you’ve ever witnessed?
We stood on the shore of Lake Michigan several years ago and watched a full solar eclipse. That was pretty amazing. Otherwise, I guess I'd have to say the birth of my son, though I was pretty mental when the actual event occurred!Main Course
If you were a celebrity, what would you do for a publicity stunt?
Absobloodyfuckinglutely NOTHING. That in and of itself would be so unusual as to be a stunt, but that's not why I'd do it.Dessert
What do you consider the ideal age to have a first child?
Somewhere between 25 and 33 seems reasonable. It depends a LOT on one's relative maturity and ability to provide for a child, much more than on one's chronological age.

- He is patient when I lose it.
- His presence makes me feel safe.
- He never backs down from a challenge.
- He is friendly with people where I tend to hang back more.
- We can sit in the living room and read for hours in the evening, and we both enjoy it.

Cost
1. What’s something you suspect you regularly overpay for?
I don't suspect, I know I pay too much for bottled pop at gas stations!2. What’s something you suspect you regularly underpay for?
I never pay my library fines, and there are a lot of 'em. I could probably buy a week's worth of groceries on the annual unpaid fines I accrue!!3. What’s taking up more of your time than it should?
Right now it's a toss-up between blogging and worrying.4. What’s causing you stress only because you let it?
Life.5. If all your karma were based on your positive and negative attitudes, would it be in good shape, in bad shape, or perfectly in balance?
If you look at my outlook over the whole of my life, I'd say I'm in pretty good shape. I probably am less of a Pollyanna than I used to be, but I'm so NOT anymore that I'm in danger of heading toward negativity in a big way!

Four for Friday
Q1 - Underwear: Pull up your pants or else! That's the sentiment behind efforts in cities across the U.S. to ban droopy trousers that reveal men's boxer shorts, and baggy sweats that reveal a women's thong. In just the last seven days alone, city councils in Shreveport and Alexandria, Louisiana, and Atlanta, Georgia, have taken up measures in favor of banning fanny-flaunting pants. Do you think it's okay for cities and towns to legislate apparel?
Not unless there's a public safety problem (i.e. gang colors). Frankly, I think we should just post photos of the worst offenders so they can see how ridiculous they look, and then make sure they see those pictures in about 10 years, and promise to show their children the photos. Seems to me the "thong thing" is pretty much over, at least around here. Boys being (generally) slower on the uptake with fashion trends...that will take awhile to stop.Q2 - Compensation: Richard Jewell--the contract security guard who was falsely accused of planting a bomb at the 1996 Summer Olympics, and who despite never being charged with any crime underwent what was considered by many to be a "trial by media" that took a great toll on his personal and professional life--died earlier this week of what appear to be natural causes. Nearly 10 years after his ordeal, in April of 2005, Jewell was completely exonerated when Eric Rudolph pleaded guilty to carrying out the bombing attack at Centennial Olympic Park, as well as three other attacks across the southeast portion of the United States. Considering Jewell's situation, do you feel people who have falsely been accused of major crimes should be entitled to compensatory reparations, or is having to deal with such situations simply the cost we must pay in order to live in a society that affords us with so many freedoms?
Who is going to pay the damages? I absolutely feel the falsely accused should be compensated by the papparazzi and other media folk, but I'm not sure how that would work. It just pisses me off that everyone assumes that if it's in the paper--or, really, if it's on TV--it's true. The follow-up is missing in a lot of stories: it breaks, there's LOTS of coverage, and then....nothing. The original person is released and no one says a thing to him/her.Q3 - Make Room: What particular item of food, regardless of how stuffed you may be, can you always find room for?
If I'm really that full, I stop eating. Nothing sounds good.Q4 - I Insist: Growing up, I had a neighbor who was rumored to wear a brand new dress shirt each and every time he went to work. Never would he wear the same dress shirt twice. What is one thing that you are absolutely particular about?
I think this guy sounds like a lazy bum who never did laundry! But as for my particularities (or peculiarities, to be honest)...time has gradually rinsed them right out of my life. There are a lot of "nevers" and/or "onlies": I never wear high, spiky heels (anymore), I never take pills without something to drink, I only wear mostly-cotton underwear, I never wear socks with sandals.... OK, there, that last one, that's a promise you can take to the grave for me. Never. Ever. Socks + sandals are the devil's handiwork. Feh.

Five on Friday
Speed Trap
1. Have you ever been pulled over? How many times?
Three times.2. What are you most likely to be pulled over for? (Speeding? Reckless driving? Expired tags/inspection? Bad signal/headlight?)
I got pulled over twice for blowing stop signs. The first time I really did shoot through the intersection, the other time (15 years later) I swear I stopped. And I got stopped for speeding last fall.3. You're driving along on your merry way when you see a police car. What is your first thought?
I check the speedometer, and my foot probably comes of the accelerator without conscious thought. Otherwise, I don't worry because I almost never speed. Much.4. When you see a cop car, do you hit your brakes or keep your foot on the gas?
I slow down, not just out of guilt, though I'm sure that's more than 75% of the reason. I also figure there's a chance the cop may need to be somewhere rather suddenly, so I should pay attention.5. What's your personal speed limit? How do you determine what it is for any given road?
On clear days, I consistenly set my speed 4-5 MPH higher than the posted speed. I have been vindicated by those occasional meters they set up telling you how fast you're going: my speedometer reads about 3 MPH faster than I'm actually going! If there's a lot of traffic, I generally try to stay with the flow, not the fastest but not the slowest either. Around here, if you don't do that, you might as well ride the bus!

Weather
1. Where you live, what kind of weather (or weather-related tragedy) do you fear the most?
For me, realistically, it's tornadoes. They really scare me a lot.2. What kind of weather do you MOST enjoy?
We get some nasty snowstorms too, but they don't scare me. Other people on the road during snowstorms do, but the storm itself doesn't. I'm careful to keep what I need in the car for emergencies.
Hot, dry, sunny weather. No humidity.3. What kind of weather do you LEAST like to drive in?
As noted above, I'm not a fan of snow, but not because of my driving. It takes a lot of concentration, though. I also don't enjoy driving in really buggy weather, like around sunset in spring in the midwest. It feels like a hailstorm!4. What is the scariest weather-related experience you've had in your lifetime?
Probably the microburst over our neighborhood three years ago. Really freaky, and very scary.5. Share a "weather picture" with us!

20. Did you stay friends with your ex? The first ex I've seen in about fifteen years was at our college reunion, and I'm not sure how much of an "ex" he was, but it was very interesting watching him figure out who I was when I introduced myself. I almost laughed. Apparently, he had fun, too. ;-)
21. What are you excited about? Sadly, right this minute I'm only excited about sleeping. I'm kinda looking forward to the museum tomorrow but it's a muted excitement.
22. What did you do two nights ago? Would that be Friday night? I believe I answered that already....
23. Are any of your great-grandparents still alive? Only in photos and heaven.
24. Where do you keep your money? Well, it's NOT in my mattress! Most of it's safely (I hope) in the bank.
25. Do you remember the best night of your life? Just one? How could you forget something that you remember this way??
26. Would you rather sleep with someone else, or alone? As long as the other person doesn't kick me all night (ahem, Sparky), I don't really care. I do sleep a little better alone.
27. How many piercings do you have? One in each earlobe.

Situation Sunday
Situation #1
You are out rock climbing with friends and halfway to the top you notice a pack of wolves. So you all decide to go back down and make a run for the truck. On the way down you notice a grizzly bear--it is huge....What do you do? { No cell phones}
OK, first of all, the wolves will leave people alone unless they are sick/starving, or if one of us is dead. So I wouldn't run back to the truck in the first place. Even if these wolves are habituated to humans, I wouldn't suggest running. Think of dogs: if you run, they run. Wave your arms, and back away while making lots of noise (throwing things can be helpful, if absolutely necessary).Situation #2 You and your husband/wife or significant other are out locally shopping. A car goes by, that happens to be having something hanging on the bottom of it. You want to go tell them, but you hear from your partner "They know about it, leave them alone." Do you go tell them anyway or just shrug it off as "ya, you're probably right." What do you do?
Secondly, the bear thing? After I peed my pants? Bears really scare me. Seriously, though, how far away is the bear? I know from several points of reference that the best way to avoid a bear attack is to make lots of noise and not 'sneak up' on it. A key point is not running, or making any other quick movements. Back away slowly (this is so rote for me that it's now a joke: "Bill, just back away from me slowly...."). Also, don't climb a tree; some bears can climb, and they also quite tall, so you'd have to climb a LONG way up to get out of their reach. Waving your arms above your head and talking is also a good idea. If the bear does attack you, the best thing to do is to play dead, and stay 'dead' for as long as possible after the attack is over in case he stays to make sure.
In any event, wild animals avoid humans for the most part. They aren't stupid; they generally pick fights they know they can win.
I'm pretty much a "let it go" person on these things. I'm not going to chase someone down, and if it seems dangerous, I'll just call the police with the license number. However, if we are in the same parking lot, walking, I will probably mention it.Situation #3
You are out walking/jogging or riding your bike. And you come across a bag with a very large sum of money in it, $50,000. No one is around. What do you do? Now that you have done what you decided to, a month later in the paper is a article about this handicapped person that was robbed of $50,000. Are you happy with the dession you made earlier?
I absolutely would call the police from the get-go. I want nothing to do with 'found money' of this sort. Call me stupid, but having to explain this on my taxes makes it just too complicated to be worth it.

Saturday Six
1. Considering all possible factors about a person that make us different, like age, appearance, religion, race, origin, sexual preference, etc., with 10 being the most prejudiced and 1 being the least, how do you think you would rate yourself?
I'm probably a 4 working toward a 2.2. You’re having a problem with a product or service and you call customer service. You are finally connected with someone who has a thick accent that sounds difficult to understand. What is the first thing that goes through your mind?
"I need to get my hearing checked. It sucks getting older with my genes!"3. A co-worker you like tells you that his or her church is holding an "open house" and is encouraging people of other faiths to visit. You and your co-worker are of different faiths. How likely would you be to attend?
I'd go, but if it's a church then it would be much of stretch for me, will it? Going to a mosque would be awesome (not that there is one anywhere in the area), as would attending temple or a session of chanting with the Buddhists.4. Take the quiz: Are you prejudiced?
When I took this a couple of weeks ago, it said I wasn't prejudiced.5. You lose a big promotion to someone who you considered to be less qualified than you are, despite the fact that you are only going by instinct in making that determination. If your boss later pulls you aside and explains that because of a growing effort to promote diversity, the other person was selected over you. What would your first reaction likely be?
I would never base a judgment of qualifications on my 'instinct!' I would base it on reason, evaluation, and reality. And if any boss of mine said this I would be looking for a job ASAP because that's just ridiculously stupid stuff to say to an employee. Can you spell L-A-W-S-U-I-T? Not from me, it's simply poor management to make comments like this.6. Your car breaks down in a neighborhood in which everyone is of a different race than you: are you more likely to be uncomfortable?
If my car were to break down anyplace where I wasn't familiar with the are, I'd be uncomfortable. However, having said that, then yes, that would be exacerbated if I were the only middle-aged white chick in sight.

medical anomalies
when was the last time you...
1. ...went to the doctor? why did you have to go?
I took Sparky for his school physical last Thursday: does that count? And I'll be going to see the NP on Monday about my stupid eyes. Before that...I saw the dr. just before we left on vacation because I wanted to have a prophylactic cortisone taper scrip to take with me just in case. Didn't need it, thank God.2. ...had surgery? for what?
Just about exactly 10-1/2 years ago when things 'sploded inside of me.3. ...visited someone in the hospital? who was it?
I'm pretty sure the last time was Katherine last January. Unless nursing homes count, in which case Mom in March.4. took a prescription medication? for what?
3:00 today, eyedrops. I'm holding out for another half hour before I dose up again for the night.5. ...injured any part of your body? what were you doing?
It's possible this eye thing is an injury; I don't know. I don't know what from, but I do know when things got really bad: last Sunday night around 8:30 p.m. Before that...I can't think of anything really awful unless you count bad posture + tension that requires attention from a licensed massage therapist.6. ...ate something that gave you food poisoning? what was it?
I don't remember. It's been awhile; I've got an iron stomach at least in terms of food poisoning. The first week we were in this house, though, I ate bad apple pie and spent a night in the bathroom throwing up.7. ...had a cold/allergies?
... grrrrrr ...now. Constantly. I think I need to move to Costa Rica for the months of August and September every year.8. ...did NOT heed a doctor's advice? what did you ignore/do differently?
I've reached the point that I actually trust all my current doctors. I guess the only thing I'm having trouble doing right now is watching what I eat, both generally and in terms of cholesterol content.

Saturday Special
~Personal Preferences~
1. Quiet evening at home or Out on the town?

Books. Of course!3. Order a meal or Cooking one yourself?
Order in. I don't like cooking.4. Going for a walk or Taking a ride in the car?
Either. Depends on the purpose and how far we're going!

Communication
So I'm off to read the LONG version of the results...I'm not sure about the whole "diplomat" thing--I tend toward a redheaded Irish temper....
You're a Diplomat!
This means that you tend to be a cooperative partner with first-rate listening and negotiation skills. Above all, you seem to try to keep the lines of communication open between you and your significant other. In your mind, it's usually far better to talk about problems as they arise rather than sweep them under the rug. For you to really feel connected to your special someone, it's important that they hear and understand you. Ordinarily, you'll return this courtesy tenfold by paying close attention to your partner's perspective.

Friday Fifteen
Fifteen Family Members I Like, and Why*
- Sparky--He's adorable, and growing up to be a pretty cool person (when he's not being overrun with hormones), and he is my son so I have to list him, eh? :-)
- Beast--After knowing him for 25 years...the song from "Fiddler on the Roof" just seems to be more and more applicable:
"Do I love him?
For twenty-five years I've lived with him
Fought him, starved with him
Twenty-five years my bed is his
If that's not love, what is?" - Elizabeth--She's practically my sister, and sensible and funny and fun. Not sure where she got the 'fun' part, but I'm not complaining!
- Rosellen--Smart, zOMG brilliant. Also fun: she rides a unicycle. And, just very cool. I want to be her when I grow up...again.
- Jesse--Ellen's brother. I've liked him since his birth, in spite of dropping him on his head. It doesn't seem to have affected him. He's the one I look to when Sparky starts making me crazy; he used to drive his mom nuts in similar ways.
- Don--Best dry wit of anyone I know. Hands down. Best-looking person in the family too, combined with a dependableness and practicality that his mom would be very proud of.
- Cece--She puts up with my brother: for that she should be higher on the list. I wish we lived nearer so we could hang out; I think we'd get along great!
- BIL--When he was in high school and college he used to get up to stuff with the specific intent to a) drive his parents nuts, and b) skirt the edges of every rule to see if they'd be enforced to the letter or to the spirit. He works for Amnesty International. How cool is that?
- Ellen--My favorite sister, the "fun one"...the one I have imaginary conversations in my head with all the time. I miss her more than anyone knows.
- Alan--He puts up with my most difficult niece, with an equanimity that I don't understand at all. Gets along with everyone. Of everyone on this list--omitting Beast and Sparky--he's the one I worry the most about.
- Marie--She is, surprisingly, the only one in my generation in the family who seems to fully 'get' the concept of me being an adult. Responsible, practical, and surprisingly funny (when she lets herself go). I'll forgive her for her attachment to baseball.
- Dad--He always made me laugh, frequently unintentionally because he was just so freakin' earnest about some things. I can't remember ever being really angry with him, ever. He always played the Good Cop with me, probably to the detriment of my relationship with my mother.
- James--He is a cat, one who has somehow managed to find more than nine lives. The boy (man) always lands on his feet. Engaging, serious, clueless, intense, goofy...I remember holding him when he was just a few days old and being amazed at how such a little person could emit that much poo so fast! (Hey, I was 9-going-on-10 at the time!!)
- Del--From childhood, always my favorite, even though he picked on me unmercifully. I've finally gotten over the hero-worship thing, but I admire him for what he's done with his life, and the hard work he's done to keep his son close to him in spite of physical distance.
- Hamil--As the youngest of my nieces/nephews, he has a special place in my heart because he was just a super-cute little boy. Always--ALWAYS!--smiling, cherubic, loving...and very traumatized by his dipshit mother. Now he's a young man who wants to be a cop, and I just can't picture him in that job. I hope he's changed or he'll never make it.
* No, these are not their real names!

| You Are a Haunted House |
![]() You are a deeply complicated and sometimes deeply disturbed person. You can't help but be attracted to the dark side of life - even when it's pretty gruesome. In relationships, you are honest and real. So real that it's definitely a little scary. You don't fake it or play along just to get along. And people either respect this... or deeply resent it Your life is thoughtful, deep, and even philosophical at times. You see the world as it is. You don't sugar coat anything. Facing and fighting your fears is important to you. You believe that too much of life is whitewashed. You're not too morbid...you just believe that you can't enjoy life without exorcising a few demons first! At your best, you are brave, intense, and fearless. Not only do you face the abyss head on - you challenge your friends to do the same. At your worst, you are depressed and morose. If you're not careful, your thoughts take over your mind... and they aren't pretty! |
Rather startling in its accuracy..... I don't think I'm attracted to the dark side, nor am I that disturbed (sez the crazy chick), but the rest is right on.

Possession Obsession
1. What is the silliest thing you own?
I own a LOT of silly things. I actually buy silly things quite often, so this is pretty tough. The lips pin on my bulletin board at work? Those are from freshman year college, a memento of losing my RHPS virginity. The pads of note paper with snarky sayings on them? They are all over the house. Multiple stupid T-shirts, ditto.2. What is the most important thing you own?
Either something Sparky has made me, or my parents' papers.3. What is the one thing you'd like to possess if money were no object?
Money is not really my issue. Right now, I'd love to have a dog, one that's easy to care for and has a wonderful personality. Not a purebred.4. What is the one thing in your possession that you want to get rid of?
So, yeah, my wish is to stop having allergies!
Guess I inadvertently answered that already.5. What item do you have the most of in your possession?
Photos.

Tired
1. What were the circumstances surrounding your last all-nighter?
Someone in pain and in the emergency room.2. What’s your favorite stay-awake-and-alert food or drink?
Hate to say it, but with the amount of caffeine I drink, nothing really keeps me awake except adrenaline.3. What are you most likely to be doing when you’re up in the late, late hours of the night?
Worrying.4. In what way does your personality change when you are sleep-deprived?
I'm not a lot of fun. Mostly I get very weepy, but probably the rest of the problem is similar to what you'd get if you poured liquor down my throat...total loss of inhibitions. And crying. And I tend to get sick soon thereafter, too.5. If you get home extremely tired and extremely hungry, which need are you most likely to satisfy first?
Sleep. I can sleep virtually anywhere. It's either my age or my status as a mom. ;-)

Four for Friday
Q1 - Fighting: A recent poll found that U.S. citizens are now less likely to see the possibility for peace between the believers of Islam and Christianity. Of 1,029 people polled, 53 percent say conflict is inevitable between believers the two religions here in the United States. Regardless of your faith, would you engage in physical fighting on behalf of your religion/religious beliefs?
No, I'm pretty much a Quaker on this issue. To me, fighting for a religion that I believe is based on peace sorta negates the whole concept.Q2 - Going: Would you use a public toilet that was entirely encased in one-way glass (it's completely impossible for anyone to see in from the outside, but when you're inside it's like sitting in a clear glass box)?
I suspect I'd make someone else go in before me and try it out. Once I knew for sure that it wasn't possible to see through the walls from the outside...sure.Q3 - Collecting: Jeremy Mehrle of O'Fallon, MO, recently made news for his pristine collection of Apple computers. The 30-year-old Mehrle has over 100 different models--all in excellent working condition--set up in his basement, and has no immediate plans to stop adding to his growing collection. For special events, like New Year's Eve, he plays videos on several monitors and sets up strobe effects on multiple machines, creating a rave-like atmosphere. If money was not a concern (meaning, you had enough to do it), what would you collect and how and where would you display your collection?
I collect dust. My mother insists that I've collected salt & pepper shakers since before I was born--yeah, I don't get it either--so I have a lot of those (mostly hand-me-downs). But mostly, it's just the dust.Q4 - Jobbing: If you could have had any job in the history of all mankind, what specific job would you have liked to have had?
[Translation: collecting things seems really stupid to me. For serious collectors, using the collection isn't allowed, and what's the point of that?!]
Samuel Pepys' job. Get paid for writing a diary full of gossip that people will read as gospel for the next several centuries. Where do I sign up?

1. How do you feel about going to the dentist?
It has gradually become both less and more bearable. Less because the aftereffects of simple cleaning are painful (if that hasn't happened yet, just wait!). More because I take better care of my teeth between visits, so I haven't had a cavity in several years. I do not like the Big #&*#ing Needle, I do not like the smell of grinding tooth enamel under drills, nor the sound of the procedures from inside my head.2. Describe your worst dental experience.
Hearing the dentist say "oops" while I was getting my wisdom teeth pulled. He'd broken one of the roots off, so he had to go fishing...digging...to retrieve it. There is absolutely no sound like the sound of roots separating from jawbone.3. Describe your best dental experience.
...as if... The last time I was there wasn't too bad. But they are not fun. Ever.4. Do you floss?
The last time I had to see the orthodontist was pretty fabu, too.
I try to floss at least once a day. I keep hearing about my gums...and my sister had bad periodontal disease. I don't want dentures.5. Would you consider wearing braces as an adult?
Look, I spent over two years in braces in junior high, plus another year with a retainer. I better not need braces as an adult!
Had I not had that opportunity, then I absolutely would get them now, even knowing all the hassle, and pain.

Friday Fill-In
1. I see Sparky playing on his DS.
2. I hear music in my head.
3. I touch ...see, now I have that DiVinyls song in my head!... NOTHING! I touch NOTHING! Do you hear me?!
4. I taste chocolate. Another stellar breakfast for me today!
5. I smell clean right now (fresh outta the shower).
6. I sense that today might be a very long day.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to a jewelry party (ok, I'm NOT looking forward to it, but I'm going), tomorrow my plans include buying tickets online for Monday's museum adventure, and Sunday, I want to go to my niece & nephew's but we probably won't if my eyes haven't sorted themselves out yet.
