A collection of Sunday memes

(All link at left on blogroll)

randomness...feed your mind and your blog

Would you rather....
1. ...eat a live cockroach (the big hissing ones) or eat a stick of butter?
Seeing as how there's no other information about the butter, I'll pick it. I'd be adding some flour and sugar, maybe some vanilla extract...{slurp} yummy.
2. ...go bungee jumping or sky diving?
Sky diving. I'd rather trust the parachute(s) than a piece of elastic.
3. ...eat a lime or a lemon?
Limes are smaller, so yeah: lime.
4. ...be stranded on a deserted island alone or be stranded on a deserted island with someone you hate?
Oh, totally alone. No contest!
5. ...be able to read minds or be able to become invisible?
Invisible. I already read minds pretty well--ask Sparky! I'm gradually becoming socially invisible, however, as do all middle-aged women.
till next time....

Fracas

What are the funny things you remember your parents saying? Do you say them to your kids?
Things my parents said:
"Your eyes were bigger than your stomach."
"Do you have a hollow leg?"
"If everyone else jumped off a cliff, I suppose you would, too."
"Were you born in a barn?!?"
"I'm not your maid."
"Grace" [when I tripped or did something else klutzy]
"Your legs are younger than mine."
"Bored? I've got a couple of ideas of things you could do..."
"Don't you walk away when I'm talking to you!"
"I'll wash your mouth out with soap."
"What an ugly face; hope it doesn't freeze like that."
"If I've told you once, I've told you a million times..."
"If you don't have some of everything on the table and clean your plate, there's no dessert for you." [I usually didn't even want dessert anyway!]
"You'd forget your head if it wasn't attached."
"I'll make you cut your own switch." [I never understood this: wouldn't she have cut a better one than I would??]
"Life's not fair."
"Stop dragging your feet!!"

Things I've found myself saying, either seriously or knowing full-well I'm quoting my mother with an eyeroll:
"I brought you into this world and I can take you back out and make another one just like you."
"Your legs are younger than mine." (serious)
"Don't you walk away when I'm talking to you!" (serious)
"Life's not fair."
"Don't you look at me that way." (serious)
"Finish your dinner; there are children starving..."
"When I was a kid..." (occasionally serious)
"Go outside and play. It's a beautiful day." (serious, and I've locked the door once or twice, too, to keep him out there!)
"Grace."
"When did you clean your ears last?" (serious)
"Look, I can see right through your head!" (when his ears are clean)
"I'll always love you, no matter what. I might not like you much sometimes, though."

Saturday 6
1. Rating them on a scale of one to ten, which of the following aspects of your life would you think rates the highest: mind, body or spirit?
Mind: 9
Body: 3
Spirit: 8
2. Rating them on a scale of one to ten, which of the following aspects of your life would you think rates the lowest: friends/family, love or finance?
Friends/family: 9
Love (for me this is kinda the same as friends/family): 9
Finance: 8
3. Considering all six categories, which do you think would rank closest to the middle, a "5"?
I guess, by default, that would be "body."
4. Take the quiz: How does your life rate?
This Is My Life, Rated
Life:
6.7
Mind:
6.6
Body:
5.5
Spirit:
6.8
Friends/Family:
7.5
Love:
7.3
Finance:

Take the Rate My Life Quiz

Your Life Analysis:

Life: Your life rating is a score of the sum total of your life, and accounts for how satisfied, successful, balanced, capable, valuable, and happy you are. The quiz attempts to put a number on the summation of all of these things, based on your answers. Your life score leaves room for improvement. You can make changes to improve your trouble areas, and this will bring you greater satisfaction. Focus on your weakest points and set about to change them. Do not delay your happiness and success.

Mind: Your mind rating is a score of your mind's clarity, ability, and health. Higher scores indicate an advancement in knowledge, clear and capable thinking, high mental health, and pure thought free of interference. Your mind score is not bad, but could be improved upon. Your mental health is not weak, but you are not achieving full mental clarity and function. Learn how to unclutter your mind. Keep learning, keep improving, continue moving forward.

Body: Your body rating measures your body's health, fitness, and general wellness. A healthy body contributes to a happy life, however many of us are lacking in this area. Your body score is fairly average, which means there is room for improvement. Keep a focus on your physical health. Protect your body as it is your most valuable physical asset. Nutrition, stress reduction, and exercise are key.

Spirit: Your spirit rating seeks to capture in a number that elusive quality which is found in your faith, your attitude, and your philosophy on life. A higher score indicates a greater sense of inner peace and balance. Your spirit score is relatively high, which means you are rewarded by your beliefs. Spirituality is clearly important to do. Never let it slip, and continue to learn and grow.

Friends/Family: Your friends and family rating measures your relationships with those around you, and is based on how large, healthy, and dependable your social network is. Your friends and family score is quite healthy. You have a social network you can depend upon. Count your blessings, but never forget that these bonds need to be maintained. Keep your friends and family close.

Love: Your love rating is a measure of your current romantic situation. Sharing your heart with another person is one of life's most glorious, terrifying, rewarding experiences. Your love score is in good shape, meaning that things are going well. Do all you can to maintain it, and continue to grow and move ahead.

Finance: Your finance rating is a score that rates your current financial health and stability. Your financial score is impressive. You seem to be doing everything right in this area, so keep up what you're doing. Do not fall into common traps and continue planning for long-term stability.
5. Of the first three questions, how many of your responses match the responses of the quiz?
None of them.
6. Which of the test's responses do you disagree the most with and why?
I think the score on "mind" is too low, and "body" is probably too high. {shrug} Oh, well. They just asked the wrong questions! :-)

A selection from the Friday memes

Good GOD, but there's a lot of them!
(All links at left in blogroll)

T.G.I.F.
Reel Time
1. What is your favorite movie line?
"I can make a hat, or a brooch, or a pterodactyl...." (to be accompanied by appropriate hand motions)
2. Who is your favorite movie protagonist of all time?
I'm completely drawing a blank: Maria in the "Sound of Music"? Sophie in "Sophie's Choice"? Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof"? The Oracle in the Matrix movies?
Oh, wait, no, here's my answer: Indiana Jones!!
3. Who is your favorite movie antagonist of all time?
Christian Slater in "Heathers."
4. What is your favorite movie montage?
Does 75% of "Groundhog Day" count?
5. What is your favorite movie title?
"It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (but the movie is stupid). I also like "The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming!" Sensing a theme here? I remember seeing the latter movie when I was very young (too young to understand it); all I actually recall is the main character running along a beach yelling.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Friday's Feast

Appetizer
Where on your body do you have a scar, and what caused it?
I have a lovely six-inch "zipper" on my abdomen caused by surgery in 1997 when my innards imploded.
Soup
What is something that has happened to you that you would consider a miracle?
Surviving the above surgery and not having to have chemo afterwards.
Salad
Name a television personality who really gets on your nerves.
It would be easier to name one who doesn't. I'll go with Regis Philbin on general annoyance principles, not because of anything he says.
Main Course
What was a funny word you said as a child (such as "pasketti" for "spaghetti")?
I don't think I did. It was frowned upon in my house. I heard a lot about funny ways other family members spoke, but none of the stories involved me. I rarely spoke unless spoken to when I was very little.
Dessert
Fill in the blank: I have always thought disco music was fun.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Friday Fiver
It's the least that you could not do
1. What do you try to stay away from?
Pain.
2. Are you clumsy or graceful?
I'm a complete klutz. No question about it.
3. What is it too late for?
It's too late for me to have more kids, not that I'm upset about this.
4. What/who was your first love?
I'm torn between books, jump-ropes, and jacks.
5. Friday fill in: I believe that spring will eventually come (in spite of the recent weather here).

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Friday Five

1. Would you rather serve in heaven or rule in hell?
Serve in heaven. I'm totally not a power junkie.
2. If you had evidence that would catch a killer, but also put you in jail, would you use it?
Depends on who the killer is killing. If it's a one-off, heat of the moment killer who is really no danger to anyone else, I'd probably serve my own self-interest. Does that make me bad? Yeah, well, I'm not much interested in going to prison myself, thanks. However, I'd like to think I would turn in a serial killer....
3. If you could work the worst job you have ever had, for three years and then never have to work again, would you or would you rather work the job you always wanted but not be able to retire until well past the age of retirement?
The latter. I've had some pretty unpleasant jobs, and I don't mind working. I have no real plans to retire anyway, since who knows what shape Social Security will be in by the time I'm 65.
4. If you could write four newspaper headlines, which would come true, what would they be?
World Peace Arrives!
No Starving Children Anywhere!
Entire Bush Family Disappears in Bermuda Triangle!
Cure for Child Abuse Found!
5. A video of children in Florida fighting while adults cheer on was posted on MySpace, the popularity of "gang videos" has also increased, and there has been renewed interest in re-creating the infamous "Faces of Death" video series. Do you feel there should be laws limiting extreme videos?
You can't legislate morality. Having said that, you also can't expect people to stop doing something if it's readily available. I guess I'd like to see a rating system of some kind that incorporates a rubric of reasons for rating things unacceptable for kids. Sort of a combination of the language, violence, and sex ratings on TV, but with more thought and just one overall rating. I dunno. I think parents should be parents, and do their jobs. And other pie-in-the-sky ideals.

Friday 5
Synchronicity
In honor of the reunion of the Police (ask an older sister if you don’t know), here are this week’s Friday 5! You don’t have to know a thing about the Police to answer the questions, of course. We wouldn’t do that.
1. Who’s got you wrapped around his or her finger?
To the extent that anyone does--not much--Sparky and Beast both could claim this.
2. What’s as easy to learn as your ABCs?
My political leanings. [What song is this? I don't recognize it at all??]
3. Whose destiny is to be the king (or queen) of pain?
Oh that it would really be Our President!! Otherwise, I can't even begin to guess who this would be.
4. Who would you like not to stand so close to you?
Oh, this is easy: Smellyman/Stinkyman at the library. He really needs to stay at least 15 feet or more away just so I can breathe.
5. Which animals’ stings have you experienced?
I've only been stung by bees a couple of times. Unless you count mosquitoes...? And those nasty Asian beetles, though I think technically, those are bites.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Four for Friday
Q1 - Power: Which would you rather have: The power to make all the decisions, or the ability to veto them?
Veto power. See comments re power above.
Q2 - Religion: Earlier this week, former Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts was heckled by a man during a speech at a retirement community in Florida. "And you sir....you're a pretender...you do not know the Lord...you're a Mormon," the heckler shouted. Romney answered back saying, "I'm convinced that the nation does need to have people of different faiths, but we need to have a person of faith lead the country." Do you agree with Romney? Do we need a President who believes in organized religion? Said differently, do you think a presidential candidate's religion or lack there of should play a factor in his or her run for office?
I think we need a president who supports and respects organized religion as a concept, but not necessarily one who belongs to a specific religion. The one thing, in retrospect, that I like about Reagan is that he rarely played the "Christianity" card during his presidency. I wish more Republicans would have followed his lead.
Q3 - Personal Safety: A friend of mine--a young woman around 19 or 20-years-old--was recently offered an opportunity (via an online matching service) to be a nanny for an East Coast family. After emailing and talking with the husband and wife a few times by phone, the couple--who never even conducted a background check on my friend--offered to purchase her a plane ticket to fly from her home in Utah to theirs in New Jersey for an interview and multi-night stay. Based on that information alone, would you encourage my friend to make the trip, or would you caution her to the potential dangers associated with hopping on a plane to visit people she doesn't know in a part of the country she has never been to?
Interesting that the fact that no background check was done on her is mentioned. Has she done a background check on THEM?? It works both ways. If she has, and they look good, I'd go...with cell phone in hand. And having left lots of details behind with trustworthy people in case something weird happens.
Q4 - Hours in a Day: If you could, would you add or subtract the number of hours in a day, and how would your decision impact your daily life?
Realistically, no. I'd just end up working longer. I'd mostly like to be able to telescope each day individually: some days need to be shorter, and others much longer!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Five on Friday
All Apologies
1. If you accidentally bump into someone, do you say anything?
Of course. Though my first thought was to say that I just tell people to "get outta the way," I always say excuse me. If they're being really obnoxious and clueless, I will say it very loudly, with emphasis on the "ME" part of that.
2. When you get into a disagreement or fight, how often are you the first to apologize?
I've almost always been the first to apologize, but I'm getting better at that....
3. What everyday actions do [you] feel should warrant an apology?
Being clueless in traffic.... Talking on cell phones in public.... Being rude to employees (unless they are rude first)....
4. Do you apologize for things that aren't your fault?
See #2 above. Yes, but less often than I used to.
5. When was the last time you apologized to someone?
I'm sure I have at least one apology under my belt today. My last real apology that I remember is for bumping into Beast last night.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Friday Fill-In

1. I love going to sleep.
2. Do you think it hurts when a bug hits a windshield?
3. A smiley face is one of my favorite decorations. (yes, I'm one of THOSE kind of people!)
4. My collection of friends is important to me. (I don't really collect with intent, though there are those salt-and-peppers....)
5. How many votes does it take til Bush is out of office?
6. Up, up and away in my beautiful balloon. I love this song; it always reminds me of listening to it from my bedroom while my brother was in his room next door when I was 5 or 6.
7. I am SO looking forward to snow this weekend! Please be sure to read with irony.

Thursday Threesome

(Link at left)
Death

1. Have you ever lost anyone really close to you? (Yes, it's possible to get into your 30s or higher I suppose without losing someone close). If so, who?
My grandmothers both died within two years of each other when I was under 10 (don't remember the exact year, too lazy to check). A friend from church my age died when I was 17, and another acquaintance at school died that year too. Then I think I had a long good stretch until my dad and my sister died at the end of 1994. There've been several family and church friends since then. And of course, Nathanael on 12/31/06.
2. How do you deal with the death of someone you knew (close or not)?
I do better if I have time to adjust to it ahead of time. I don't do well with sudden death, certainly not long-term (in other words, I handle it immediately, but then it comes around and bites me for a long time afterwards). And it bothers me a great deal if it's someone young, or if death was--at least by my judgment--avoidable.
3. What are your thoughts on suicide? Do you think it's a (for a lack of a better term) 'correct' way to go? Why/why not?
I think it's selfish. However, for someone who is terminally ill and prefers to exit on his/her own terms, as long as there is planning and forethought, I understand it.

You Are Not Destined to Rule the World

You are destined for something else...
Like inventing a new type of cupcake.
You just don't have the stomach for brutality.
But watch out - because many people do!
Are You Destined For World Domination?
To paraphrase Sparky: I like cupcakes.

In all seriousness, if I learned nothing else this year, I learned firsthand that not everyone "plays nice." Add another layer of cynicism to my already pretty cynical self.

************************************************************************************

You Are 6% Homophobic

You're open minded, tolerant, and accepting.
And you're not homophobic in the least
:-)
Are You Homophobic?
To clarify: I checked "Disagree" instead of "Strongly Disagree" to a couple of questions because 1) people can benefit from psychological assistance for a variety of reasons...not the least of which is dealing with society's treatment of gays; and 2) ditto on the question about gay people being disgusting--no more, no less than the rest of the population; some are, some aren't. I hate questions like these...give me an essay question any day! ;-)

************************************************************************************
You Are 20% NYC

At best, you're a tourist. At worst, you're a poseur.
How NYC Are You?
I'm neither, but I read a lot.

The only reason I'm interested in NYC: Beast's brother lives there so I'd like to visit him one of these days; Ellis Island; Broadway shows. Otherwise......meh.

************************************************************************************

You Are a Little Addicted to Gossip

In your view, most gossip is pretty harmless.
And it's a pretty fun way to pass the time!
You're willing to pass on some juicy details...
As long as you're not impacting anyone's personal life too deeply.
Are You Addicted to Gossip?
I don't like gossip at all. I just find it really difficult to avoid sometimes, it's very addictive.

************************************************************************************
What Your Hands Say About You

You are logical, analytical, and rational. You have good verbal skills.

Flexible and broad minded, you can fit in to any situation. There's no telling where your life will take you.

Brainy and intelligent, you are intellectual to the point of being incomprehensible.

Your emotions tend to be nervous and potent. Your energy - both positive and negative - deeply impacts your life
.
What Do Your Hands Say About You?
Glad to know that my goal of being incomprehensible is working! Combine that with the nervous energy...and I'm truly a potent force for ... something.

************************************************************************************

You Are Great With Money

You know the value of a dollar - and you save and spend wisely.
By living below your means, you've set yourself up for a rich future.
And while it may hurt to sacrifice now, you'll probably have plenty of money later on.
You're on your way to riches - just keep it up
.
Are You Good With Money?
Or as certain people say, "Cheep Cheep Cheep."

************************************************************************************

You Are a Smart American

You know a lot about US history, and you're opinions are probably well informed.
Congratulations on bucking stereotypes. Now go show some foreigners how smart Americans can be
.
Are You a Dumb American?
Well, this wasn't exactly challenging...but thanks for calling me smart. ;-)

************************************************************************************

Travel Horoscope for Scorpio

When you travel, you want to be inspired and awed.
You want a vacation that's challenging, exotic, and a once in a lifetime experience.

You should travel to:

Nepal
South Africa
China
Antarctica
Galapagos Islands
What's Your Travel Horoscope?
OK, I've been to China. I wouldn't mind seeing South Africa and the Galapagos, but I'll pass on the others. I really like creature comfort: indoor plumbing, heat, and comfy beds.

************************************************************************************

You Will Be Are a Cool Parent

You seem to naturally know a lot about parenting, and you know what kids need.

You can tell when it's time to let kids off the hook, and when it's time to lay down the law.

While your parenting is modern and hip, it's not over the top.

You know that there's nothing cool about a parent who acts like a teenager... or a drill sergeant!

Would You Be a Cool Parent?
Well, I should think so, though I think I'm more drill sergeant than not. I dunno about the "naturally," though. Lots of it has been trial and error.

Today is Ash Wednesday. Six weeks till Easter. For the duration, I will be meming only on Sundays, and then only if I have time. No, I'm not going to do a whole week's worth of memes each Sunday!

Monday Melee

1. The Misanthtropic: Name something (about humanity) you absolutely hate.
Our lazy tendencies. It's so much easier to do all the wrong things for all the wrong reasons, thus making a bad situation worse.
2. The Meretricious: Expose something or someone that’s phony, fraudulent or bogus.
Well, this isn't exactly a newsflash, but...W.
3. The Malcontent: Name something you’re unhappy with.
Mean people.
4. The Meritorious: Give someone credit for something and name it if you can.
Amy, for forging ahead in her personal and work life, in the face of great odds, and naysayers all around her, and while keeping at least some shreds of her sanity.
5. The Mirror: See something good about yourself and name it.
I'm reliable. I get things done that need to be done. Usually.
6. The Make-Believe: Name something you wish for.
Warm, spring-like weather.

  7. Sweet & Sour anything

  10. Fruit by the Foot and all products of that sort: extruded corn syrup and food coloring

And Beast says I have to put down earwax- and vomit-flavored Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans. Those sort of go without saying, I think, but he insists. ;-)

TMI Tuesday

(Link at left)
Would you rather...

1. be famous now & forgotten after you die or forgotten now & famous after you die, forever? And why?
I have no interest in being famous. Period. Now or later. So, given that, I'd absolutely rather have the fame be after I'm dead so I don't have to suffer through it.
2. give blood or read Hamlet? And why?
I've done both, though the blood donations are more frequent. I guess that they are slightly more productive for me right now, too.
3. be extravagantly rich but hated by others, or be well loved and admired but dirt poor? And why?
I don't think I'd like being hated...but here's the thing: I could be hated if I knew it wasn't justified. I'd rather be hated for something I didn't do than loved as a hypocrite. Oops, that's not the question: I'd rather be loved for myself, rich or poor, which is also not the question, but I don't think poor and rich enter into it.
4. be imprisoned for the rest of your life or kill someone? And why?
Yow. I'm not going to kill anyone except in self-defense. But I really don't want to go to prison forever, either. Neither choice is acceptable, so I vote for self-imolation, thus choosing to kill someone: me.
5. fight Mike Tyson or talk like him? And why?
Fight like he fought at the beginning of his career. No ear-biting. I would not want to talk like him!

Tuesday Twosome

(Link at left)
Sometimes you just want to scream…

1. What are the top two things that stress you out the most?
This is hard for me to answer seriously; the first things that popped into my head were "everything" and "life." I don't handle stress particularly well. The things that cause me the most stress are my own procrastination and things that I can't control.
2. What are two ways you relieve stress?
Blog, and sudoku.
3. Are you easily angered or able to handle every situation calmly?
Depends. I can be very calm, but it takes a lot of effort. Usually, if everyone else is freaking out I go to my calm zone to keep everyone from getting injured. The majority of the time though, I don't feel a pressing need to bury my annoyance.
4. Who or what would you defend to the death and why?
Sparky.
5. In general, are the friends and family around you happy or not?
Wow, what kind of question is that? Are they happy to be around me? Would they be happier elsewhere?? Paranoia....
I'd rather be around people who are generally happy. I'm too much of a fixer to be around cranky, sad people all the time; it would be very draining.

Cheddar X

(Link at left)
Blogger X

1. What bloggers have you met in person?
Annie (the Cataloguer), Amy, Jenica, PTF... I think that's it.
2. Were they who you thought they were?
Well, I knew three of them before blogging, so...yeah. Mostly. I know more about them, I guess, than I would otherwise. Actually, there's a whole side to PTF that I knew nothing about. Annie was not exactly what I expected, but pretty close.
3. Which blogger would you most like to meet?
I'm not fussy. Don't want to play favorites! OK, the short list would be (in no particular order) Chris, Lisa, Happyville Librarian, Robert, Cheesehead, ZenFoPro....
4. Which blogger would you most like to meet in a dark alley with a crowbar or other thwacking device?
I don't read blogs by people I want to thwack with a crowbar. Life's too short to get my blood pressure up that way.
5. What blog do you wish would just go away altogether?
I wouldn't miss the spammers, or the rightwing wackadoos. Literally. I never read them.
6. What blog do you wish would come back?
The 'squit. A couple of others that were very eye-opening, but I'm not saying which ones. And Robert, of course.

Monday Madness

(Link at left)

If you could rewrite one pivotal moment in history, good or bad, to make a change, which moment would that be AND what are some of the consequences that you believe might come from that change?
I'd make sure that whoever it was who thought up and published "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" and others of his ilk were all stillborn. Perhaps we could have avoided much of the anti-Jewish crap of the 19th and 20th century, including pogroms in Russia, Hitler's fixation on Jews, and potentially WWII.
What's the most unusual hobby you have? How did you get started with it?
I don't really have too many unusual hobbies. I guess the weirdest thing is keeping a cardfile of all the books I've read for the past 15 or so years. That's a result of my reading journal--which was an idea I got at a Wisconsin Library Association conference in the late 80s--and my OCD tendencies.
Name one thing for each of the following: Favorite smell, texture, view, sound, taste.
Smell: Just-bathed babies
Texture: Very fine sand in my fingers
View: Engineer Pass (see right)
Sound: Quiet; the sound of trucks miles away on a highway; train whistles in the distance
Taste: ...er...what I was going to say sounds weird, so I'll just go with Dr. Pepper

Life

What is the quality that you like least about yourself?
Procrastination.
My life would be simpler if...
Life is never simple. The only thing about life that's simple happens when you die.
Do you generally take the high road or the low road?
I'm getting better about taking the high road. I think I'm probably approaching 60-70% high road. So now I only have foot-in-mouth disease 1/3 of the time or so...!
What is your guiltiest pleasure?
I'm a Presbyterian: all my pleasures are guilty!

Curious as a Cat

Of all the people you know, who has the most Zen-like characteristics? How have they achieved that?
One or two of the women with whom I work are very calm almost all of the time. They are both the kindest people who also have the most common sense of almost anyone I know. And they're both Catholic, so they'd probably be kind of annoyed at being termed 'zen-like.' Oh, well. They'd laugh at me if I told them.

I also work with a woman who actually chants (zen koans) every week. She needs more work; definitely NOT zen-like.
What is your favorite form of entertainment in which you participate? To watch?
Probably the only form of entertainment in which I actively participate is blogging (if that's considered entertaining...). I love football, and music, as a consumer.
What one institution do you have the most faith in? Why?
Any organization over about 4 people generally becomes less untrustworthy in my eyes. If there isn't pretty direct accountability, I don't trust it. So, uhm, I can't think of one.

list 6 odd things

randomness...feed your mind and your blog

sound simple? it is, just list 6 odd things about yourself.

1. I am a librarian who treats books badly, has no interest in collecting them, and doesn't like Great Literature (for the most part).

2. I am a Christian, and a liberal. There are more of us around that you'd think if you were only judging by the media.

3. I'm a woman who doesn't care about shopping, expensive jewelry, makeup, or fashion.

4. I'm organized and disorganized in equal measure, at either end of the scale.
There doesn't seem to be any middle ground for me.

5. I love to travel, but I'm really a homebody most of the time.

6. I like meetings. Unless they are run by morons.

By the Way Sunday

~It's Your Day~

Not only is February known for "Valentine's Day" and "Groundhog Day," but it is also the month of many obscure celebrations. Have you ever heard of "Kite Flying Day," "Do a Grouch a Favor Day," or "Cherry Pie Day"? How about today's big event, "National Battery Day"? Well, in any case, wouldn't it be fun to invent your own holiday?

By the way...
If you could invent a holiday of your very own, what would it be?
It would definitely involved sleep, sugar, and diet Dr. Pepper! I'm not sure how to incorporate that into a holiday.
What day and month would you assign your holiday to?
Probably my birthday. Or maybe sometime in January, since that's all I want to do that month anyway!
How would you celebrate it?
Eating candy, drinking Dr. Pepper and sleeping. :-)

Personal Hygiene

1. How often do you typically shower/bath?
At least once a day. Maybe more often in summer.
2. Do you prefer showering or taking a bath?
I prefer bathing, but I don't have time for that every day.
3. What's the longest you've ever gone w/o a shower/bath?
Probably three or four days, on one of those rare occasions when I was camping...when I was a kid.
4. What's your favorite personal hygiene product?
Bath & Body Works Breathe body moisturizer.
5. Do you shave your legs and/or beard? If so how often?
I don't really need to shave my beard very often...hee. I do my legs and armpits as often as they need it: at least every other day in summer, less often in winter.

RevGal Friday Five

(Link at left)
friday five, tourist edition

1. What is one place you make sure to take out-of-town guests when they visit? (you can be vague to preserve your anonymity if you like)
We usually spend at least one day in the Big City to the East of us. There are lots of different museums, a large body of water, and just good people-watching there. Otherwise, we hit the Movie Tour in town (personally guided, by us). Or we head north to a much smaller body of water, a resort town with a really good chicken place.
2. When visiting another city or town, do you try to cram as much in as possible, or take it slow and easy?
My preference is to race around like a maniac. Beast would rather see two things over the course of several days. It's been a bit of a bone of contention all of our married life. I've learned to slow down, he's learned to speed up.
3. When traveling, where are we most likely to find you: strolling through a museum, checking out the local shopping, or _______________?
I don't shop while on vacation, except in gift shops. I do hit museums, famous sites and buildings, then I wander streets and parks, stop at restaurants and bars, that sort of thing.
4. Do you like organized tours and/or carefully planned itineraries, or would you rather strike out and just see what happens?
I'm good either way, though I prefer to have at least some time to do my own thing for awhiel each day.
5. After an extended trip, what do you find yourself craving most about home?
Different clothes, quiet, my own bed, routine.

You Are 24% Massachusetts

You could pass for being from Massachusetts - until you open your mouth and start pronouncing R's.
How Massachusetts Are You?
Yah. That's right.

You Are 32% Texas

You're as welcome in Texas as a skunk at a lawn party. ...and the feeling is mutual!
How Texas Are You?
Don't wanna be there anyway! At all.

I'm kinda bummed that my score here was higher than the Massachusetts score.

Your Boss Is Not Psycho

Even though you might hate your boss at times, your boss is pretty fair and upstanding.
If you're having trouble with your boss, you may just be having trouble with authority in general.
Is Your Boss Psycho?
I really do have a good boss, and I can't remember ever really hating her, which isn't to say that some of her decisions haven't been stupid. I have a great deal of respect for her.

[Fwiw, here's the score on PsychoBoss: "Your boss isn't just a bad boss... Your boss is a little nuts.
You should probably get a new job, before your boss is able to blame you for things going wrong."
Haven't I always thought so?]

What kind of Christian...?

What kind of Christian are you?

You enjoy thinking about stuff and not necessarily jumping to conclusions about people. You are less likely to tell someone they are going to hell or boycott Disney

Southern Baptist

Wow! Ding-dang perfect fit!

However, I'm a little concerned about the fact that the only other choice seems to be Baptist...so I'm going to go back and take the thing again.

1. What's the longest time you've spent standing?
The USSR, 1985: stood in line to enter the country, in line for various other flights within the country, in line to buy food, in line to pay, in line to pick up what we just purchased, in line at Lenin's tomb, standing in museum after museum after museum.... It felt like we stood the whole month! Realistically, probably about an hour at any one time. Airports are killers for standing in line. Going to the Soviet Union prepared me for airport security lines today.
2. How many people on LJ (or your blog) know your real name?
Amy, Beast, Jenny, Jenica, Molly, Sue, Annie, Chris... I'm not sure how often all those people read me anymore.
With the exception of Molly and Chris, they are all people I know face-to-face. Molly's instance is unusual. But then she's rather unusual. ;-) As for Chris, maybe I'm just a sucker for a nicely highlighted set of pecs. [ahem]
3. What makes you afraid?
Failure. Pain. Loss of control (which encompasses both of the previous answers here, I think).
4. What's the worst physical injury you've had?
External: I think it's just an agglomeration of a lifetime of falling on my right knee and my left wrist.
Internal: Mutated cells. Let's just leave it at that.
5. What line won't you cross?
Well, I haven't killed anyone yet.

From James Lipton's List
I did the whole Actor's Studio list here. I did not reread my previous answers before I answered these questions, so it's interesting to compare the difference two years can make. Or not as the case may be....

1. What curse word do you use most often? Shit
2. What profession other than yours would you like to do? Writer
3. What is your favorite word? I have a lot of favorites. It depends on the situation. Picking one....I've always been partial to the word "jazz."
4. What is your least favorite word? I tune in more to the tone of the words that the words themselves most of the time. Having said that, I'm not really partial to the word "no." Spoiled child much? :-)
5. What would you like God to say to you when you enter the Pearly Gates? "Welcome home."

Four for Friday

(Link at left)

Q1 - Public Speaking:What is the largest group of people you have ever spoken in front of, and what was the focus of your talk/speech?
I've spoken in churches several times, as liturgist, presenter and/or reader, and in meetings of various types (not really "in front of," more "in the midst of"), and in large classrooms. I can't remember anything much more than about 100 people. That's enough!
Q2 - Freedom of Speech: Earlier this week, former Miami Heat basketball player Tim Hardaway said on a sports radio talk show that he would not want a gay player on his team. "You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known," Hardaway said. "I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States." National Basketball Association commissioner David Stern, upon learning of the remarks, banished Hardaway from this weekend's NBA's All-Star activities in Las Vegas. Despite what you think about Hardaway's comments, do you think the NBA took the right, appropriate or just action in barring him from the League's All-Star functions?
Well, it seems to me that the NBA probably did him a favor. I'd bet on there being at least one gay person in the vicinity, and since he doesn't like being around gay people...he got his wish.

He's honest. I'll give him that. And yes, he has the right to say stuff like this. And the NBA has the right to tell him to siddown and shaddup, in this case disinviting him from something that is clearly invitational. I don't think the Heat could fire him for saying this stuff, but again they might just be able to say what I said in my first paragraph: You don't want to be around gay people? OK, well, since there may be gay people on our staff and in the crowd on game days, I guess you'll have to seek employment elsewhere. Someplace where there are no gays.

Uhm, yeah. Let me know how that works out for ya, maggot.
Q3 - Food Poisoning: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to eat from certain jars of Peter Pan peanut butter or Great Value peanut butter due to risk of contamination with Salmonella Tennessee (a bacterium that causes food borne illness). The affected jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter have a product code located on the lid of the jar that begins with the number "2111." Have you ever had food poisoning? If so, what made you sick, and can you still eat that particular food? If a restaurant was involved, can you still eat food from the establishment that contributed to your food poisoning?
I've surely had mild cases of food poisoning, but I've never been able to tie it to a specific food, or a place where I ate. Sometimes the canapes have just sat out too long at someone's house party.... If I did get sick from a restaurant, I doubt I'd eat there again.
Q4 - Purchases: What was the last thing you purchased, and what do you think you will purchase next?
Food. It's always about food for me!

Seriously: I ate Taco Bell food last night (ironic that this follows a question about food poisoning!), and I need to hit the grocery store today.
