Blogging and the Internet

1. How often do you update your blog/site and why?
I update this one whenever I come across a good quiz, meme, whatever. I try to add books to my book blog as I finish them, but I'm not doing well on that account lately. I update my 'regular' blog whenever I have something to say...and sometimes when I don't.
2. How often do you comment on other people’s sites and why?
When I find something that I can say something about, I comment. I probably talk more on friends' blogs than I do on people's where I've never commented before.
3. How often do you change the layout of your site and why?
Not as often as I should. I've gotten very lazy.
4. Do you ever feel guilty that you don’t reciprocate comments or you really don’t care?
I usually do reciprocate. Unless it's someone goofy.
5. How many sites on average do you visit daily and of those, how many do you comment on?
My blogroll has 153 feeds, not all of which are blogs. I try to keep current on it, but I don't read EVERY word on EVERY feed. I estimate I read about 10-20 carefully daily.

Tell It To Me Tuesday

Link

If they were making a Hall of Fame for your state, who would you think should make the list and why?
One of the most popular presidents we've ever had in this country came from this state, so there are shrines to him all around the state capital (where he lived). Not that I mind: what's not to like in a president who was probably clinically depressed most of his adult life, and had a crazy-ass wife that he loved to death?

The other people would involve gangsters and corrupt politicians galore. And a tractor inventor.

We should probably raise a statue to farmers, too.

Found via GoogleAlert

(...at Muppinstuff)

1. Do you like the look and the contents of your blogs?
Yes, for the most part. I mostly just change the colors periodically and update the reading part of the sidebar. I need to mess with the new Blogger layout tools, but I don't want to take the time. La-zy.

This blog's content is just fine; what you see is what you get. I've been feeling rather stagnant in my daily blog for a few months now, and I'm back to my bad reading log habits (doing them chunks at a time rather than as I finish each book). The work blog is hopeless--I'm just too busy to keep it up.
2. Does your family know about your blog?
Beast and Sparky know about them. Beast reads the daily one only. I don't think he knows I have..uh..seven.... :-) The rest of my family ... some of them know I have a blog, but I haven't told them the name.
3. Can you tell your friends about your blog?
It's odd. My best friend from college knows about the main blog, a couple of other 'real people' know about them, but by and large I haven't broadcast the URL(s). Then I can be bitchy and snipe at nearly everyone! OK, no; I just have a very compartmentalized life, and I like it that way. The people at work know about my work and reading blog, but it's tied to a different login, so there's no obvious link between my 'real life' and my work stuff.

And I've made what I think are some very good friends from blogging, so that's cool. Obviously, they know about one site or another.
4. Do you just read the blogs of those who comment on your blog?
Hell, no! I've got over 150 feeds in Bloglines. I rarely comment on 85% of the non-meme sites I read. A large chunk are library-related, and then there are local news and friends and 'interesting stuff to me for assorted reasons' (like the blog by an Anglican nun, the blog by a Gnostic priest, the blog that may be a put-on but is enthralling, the blog that's just funny/unusual photos found on the net...).

However, I do try to go check in on the blogs of the people who leave me comments, and find something to say to them if I feel comfortable enough to do that. It's just fair and polite, and it's how I've found some of the more interesting nooks and crannies of the (ahem) blogosphere.
5. Does your blog positively affect your mind?
The memes keep me sane. Don't ask me to explain why. It's like free therapy. So thanks, ya'll, for being my mental health!

The daily stuff is about 50/50. Some days it's helpful, and some days it's not. I have found it amusing to go back and reread what I wrote in the past however. And I have kept a reading log for almost 20 years so that blog is just a continuation in a more technological format.
6. What does the number of visitors to your blog mean?
I'm quite annoyed that over 75% of my visitors on my main blog are because of one photo I posted over a year ago, and have since removed. I'm also rather annoyed at how many "unknown" surfers are showing up. That's just no fun! :-) Otherwise, I don't really pay close attention to the count, the rate, the number...that way lies insanity.
7. Do you imagine what other bloggers look like?
Some of them post their pictures, some of them I actually know (in person), and yeah, the rest I have invented a mental 'face.' Mostly, I'm sure I'm dead wrong! It would be interesting to know what people think I look like! :-)
8. Do you think blogging has any real benefit?
Certainly in a personal sense it does for me. It's fun, it's therapeutic, and it's a way to get to know people I'd otherwise NEVER meet.
9. Do you think that the blogosphere is a stand alone community separated from the real world?
No. It's a part of the world we normally wouldn't be able to access. I love reading blogs written in Hong Kong, and then bouncing over to one written by someone in Venezuela who is practicing her English, and then visiting the mental neighborhood of a twenty-something IT librarian with a lot to learn about women (but he's funny as hell and a great writer).
10. Do some political blogs scare you? Do you avoid them?
I don't read "political blogs." I'm not likely to run away if someone posts a political commentary on their blog, but I'd just like people to stop being so freakin' polarized. Can't stand the meanness.
11. Do you think that criticizing your blog is useful?
Since I blog anonymously, my feeling is that if you don't like something (everything?) on one of my blogs, you don't have to read it. Bye. Close the door on your way out. On the other hand, if I piss off any of my regular readers, I'd hope they'd tell me....
12. Have you ever thought what would happen to your blog in case you died?
Recently, one of the individuals I read regularly did die very suddenly. I have thought about what would happen to my stuff since then. I guess Beast would have to decide what to do. Maybe I should tell him my password(s)....or at least write them down somewhere he'd be likely to find them, if for no other reason than to tell people what happened. If he could be bothered.
13. Which blogger has had the greatest impression on you?
Each of the blogs I have read over the past three years has influenced me. I've stopped reading some and picked up (a lot of) others. I can't pick one that has impressed me more than any others across the board.
14. Which blogger do you think is the most similar to you?
I wouldn't presume to pick. I know what I choose to blog is just part of me (hard to believe, considering how much faffing about I do!), so I wouldn't want to assume that I'm at all like anyone in particular. I obviously share my profession with Amy, Jenica, and Shelly. Lisa and I have similar-aged sons (who are only children). Molly and Betsy are relatives of a friend. I probably wouldn't read other people's blogs if they didn't 'speak' to me, and I think that means I find something in them that applies to my life.
15. Name a song you want to listen to.
And, changing directions dramatically....! Whiplash.

I could go for some Tchaikovsky, actually. A little 1812 Overture....

Monday Madness

Link

1. Do you make New Year's resolutions? If so, what is your most important one?
No.
2. Easter is coming. Many Christians give up something for Lent. Do you give something up for any reason (or season)? What is it this year?
I should probably start thinking about this pretty soon. Lent starts in about three weeks. I usually try to give something up. Not sure what it'll be this year.
3. Do you watch the Super Bowl? If so, do you watch it with a group? If not, what do you do while the game is on? Anything special?
Yes, we always watch. This year we'll be cheering loudly for ponies (which I find familiar, as a Broncos fan). We'll have the high school group from church here for the game. Last year we ended up playing poker with them when the game got boring.
4. Would you miss Monday Madness if it stopped permanently?
Yes. I'd miss all 'my' memes.
5. Name at least one theme for MM questions. Share at least one question for that theme.
Stupid Mom sayings.
Favorite room in your house (or the house in which you grew up).
Stores you'll never shop in (again).
Socks with toes: discuss.

Random Joy

1. How do you feel about karaoke? (e.g., Fun? Painful? Worst invention ever?)
Why do people think they can sing in public? OK, so yes, painful. Fun if you're not the only sober person in the bar. If you are the only sober person, it's the worst invention ever.
2. Have you ever accidentally lit something on fire?
Yeah. Oooh, boy. Thank God for smoke detectors!
3. Do you wear slippers around the house?
Yes, and I should have them on now--my feet are freaking FREEZING tonight!
4. Plaid: stylish or offensive?
I like plaid. A lot. Though I rarely wear it.
5. What's on top of your fridge?
A cup with dry-erase pens for the calendar on the fridge, the banana stand and a box with an empty Dom bottle in it. I think that's it. I'm too lazy to go look, and Beast says he can't see the fridge from his chair.

Curious as a Cat

(Link at left)

If you could witness one supernatural event--whether you believe in the supernatural or not--what would it be? Why?
I'd kind of like to have been present at the Resurrection. Not that anyone would believe me, but at least there would be one actual witness to what happened.
What is your earliest memory? Why do you think you have remembered that particular event or thing?
My earliest memory is of our living room furniture suite (dark green, at least two pieces)...and only because I had a very weird nightmare about it turning into monsters. I must have been 3 or 4...because I don't actually remember that furniture in the house otherwise. No clue why that bad dream has stuck in my head for 40 years!
Pick a friend or acquaintance with whom you think you would like to start a new business venture. What business? Why that person?
I've been trying to decide if a DinnerbyDesign franchise is doable. It's not, unless I can find a business partner to staff it. Amy? Want in?

Manic Monday

(Link at left)

Have you ever danced under the stars?
I surely must have! I mean really! But I don't remember.
Have you ever listened in on a private conversation?
All the time. People say the most amazing things into their cell phones in public places. I try to tune out...well, not always. :-) Before cell phones, though, we'd always listen in on other people's conversations in restaurants and at airports. And then try not to giggle.
Have you ever splurged on something you normally wouldn't purchase? What was it?
VS. It's all Amy's fault, and now I'm completely sold on the stuff!

By the Way Sunday

(Link at left)
~Blue Jean Baby~

Do you wear blue jeans? How often?
Yes, I do, as often as possible. They are my de facto uniform. I'd live in them if I could, but at this point, I'm down to 3 or 4 days a week.
What color/fabric style do you prefer? (examples: regular denim, faded, dingy, holey, etc.)
I'm not fussy about style beyond the idea of having 5 pockets and sturdy belt-loops. They have to have hip room for me, and I guess I prefer faded jeans, but no holes. I don't like dark, deep blue denim; it screams "NEW!" and makes me think those jeans haven't been worn enough to be broken in and comfortable.
If allowed, what kind of jeans did you wear in high school?
I barely was allowed; my mom was not happy about it. I wore whatever I could get her to buy me...no memory of what brand they were.
Over the years, what jeans were your all time favorite?
I loved my Levis 501s button-front boy jeans. That was B.C. (before child) when I didn't have the hips I have now and could wear boys' jeans! 501s are nearly impossible to buy in this part of the country anyway, and they cost a bundle, so I haven't owned a pair in almost 20 years.
What is your current favorite pair of jeans? Share the brand & style and tell us why you like them so much.
Lee Riders, flared and cut below the waist. I've had them for...uh...maybe 6 years. They are starting to be scary, like the fabric is so soft it might start to separate (not tear, just come apart like a good, well-cooked steak) while I'm wearing them. They fit perfectly. I can't find that style around here either, and I can't remember where I bought them. Boohoo.

1. Someday I want to have grandchildren.
2. I hate it when I put things off and create a logjam for myself
3. Last nite I dreamt another bizarre dream. This time our yard had miraculously turned into woods, and our house resembled the first floor of the church in which I grew up, the addition that was built when I was about 12, and my brother-in-law's uncle and aunt had come to visit. Mind you, I don't remember ever meeting this guy. There was something about Antiques Roadshow involved too. Very, VERY weird.

You Follow Your Head

You're rational, collected, and logical.
Generally, it takes you quite a while to fall in love.
In fact, you've even been accused of being very picky.
While you're cool, you're not ice cold.
You just know what you want,
and don't mind waiting to get it.
Do You Follow Your Head or Your Heart?
All true, from my perspective, except that last phrase. I'm decidedly NOT patient...says she who married at age 22.

Time dulls pain, but doesn't erase it all. At least it hasn't yet for me.

Four for Friday

Q1 - Smoking Bans: There's little dispute that smoking and second-hand smoke is bad for your health. But did you know it could also be bad for your driving record? Last week in Maine, the Bangor City Council passed an ordinance making smoking while driving in the car with children under the age of 18 a primary offense, meaning the police can pull over motorists who are suspected of breaking the law, with violators being fined up to $50 per occurrence. Do you think the Bangor City Council made the right decision, or is this just another situation where the government is interfering in our lives?
Wow. That's harsh. Um, yeah, I do think that as long as motorcyclists aren't forced to wear helmets, this law is a little draconian. Let's crack down on the actually, immediately dangerous stuff instead of the long-term health effects stuff. Not that I have much sympathy for smokers--I'm allergic--but next they'll be pulling you over for giving your kids drive-thru food in the car!
Q2 - Time: Which do you prefer: Military Time/the 24-hour clock: "I'll meet you at the gym at 19:00," or the more traditional way of expressing time via the 12-hour clock: "I'll meet you at the gym at 7:00 p.m."?
I've never been in the military so it would sound affected for me to start talking this way. However, last time I was in England, I noticed most people there do use the 24-hour clock interchangeably: "Tea is at 4" and "The meeting is scheduled at 1400." Whatever. I'll stick with a.m. and p.m. for now.
Q3 - You're Outta Here!: Were you ever suspended from school, and if so, what for? If not, did you ever skip school? If you did, what was your most memorable skipping-school experience?
Ms. Goody-Two-Shoes here. The only time I skipped school was Senior Skip Day (high school) and Senior Prank Day (but classes were cancelled for that anyway), and when my dad went to the hospital, which wasn't really skipping as my teacher basically made me leave!
Q4 - Gas: Sixty-five percent (65%) of U.S. respondents to a new UPI-Zogby International poll say a rise in gasoline prices to $4.00 a gallon would cause them to make a significant cutback in driving. Another 13.3 percent said it would take $5.00 a gallon for them to change habits, while 3.1 percent said $6.00 would get their attention. How about you...at what price per gallon would you choose or be forced to make a significant cutback or change in your driving habits?
I live in the boonies where there is no good public transit around the immediate area. If the prices go up, I'll have to keep driving, but I'd probably start campaigning for better bus schedules. I'm not too happy about $3/gallon, so I'm freaking about $4-plus...but it's about time we started paying what the rest of the world pays. I'd like that increase to be for taxes set aside specifically for public transit, however, not for the Deep Pockets.

Friday's Feast

(Link at left)

Appetizer
If you could take lessons to learn any musical instrument, which would you want to learn?
I wish I'd stuck with guitar. Drums wouldn't be bad, either.
Soup
Have you ever mistaken a person for someone else?
Oh, yeah. Totally embarrassing! I'm much more careful now.
Salad
On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being highest, how well do you keep secrets?
I'm about a 7, although if I'm specifically told to keep my mouth shut, I'm a 10.
Main Course
What's the closest you've ever been to a dangerous animal?
We were in a safari park a few years ago with lions and tigers...and giraffes and monkeys...just outside our car. A monkey was sitting on our rear-view mirror, lions about 25 feet away, giraffes walking alongside the car begging for food.
Dessert
When was the last time you lost your patience?
This has been a good week for that, actually. I think it was probably last week sometime, with Sparky probably.
