Realistically: buy, wrap and mail gifts so people have them on Christmas
In Fantasy Land: get through another box of family memorabilia
Hump Day
1. What was your favorite subject in high school? I really liked almost everything. Maybe Social Studies (a.k.a. History)? Band? Easier to list those I hated: Gym, Biology (but loved Physiology) and most other science classes.
2. Are you a dog person, cat person, both or neither? How many pets do you have? I love dogs. I'm beginning to understand the attraction of cats. I'm allergic to both, but cats wipe me out. We have two guinea pigs. [and lots of ladybugs and spiders for some reason!]
3. How was your Thanksgiving? Great. Very calm, for a change.
4. What are you asking Santa for this year? A new winter coat. Dressy boots. A new laptop with a wireless card. A good book.

Booked by Three
1. Do you use bookmarks? (If no, continue to question 2.)
What do you use? I have about 30 "official bookmarks, kept in a drawer in my nightstand. Unfortunately, I mostly use envelopes, brochures, paint chips, and other detritus instead of Actual Bookmarks.
What is the most unusual bookmark you've ever used? I've been known to use cordless phones, curling irons, and my brush on a regular basis to hold my spot.
Do you collect them? Only in the sense I get them and then I can't seem to throw them away. I'm currently using a Garfield the Cat bookmark I've had for 25 years!
2. If you don't use bookmarks, how do you keep your place?
Fold over corners? Shhh! I have been known to do this, but not often, and not recently (and not anyone else's books, only my own).
Remember the page you were up to? When I was young and had nothing else to keep track of I did this, sometimes. It didn't always work though.
Other? I tend to flip books over and leave them facedown on the couch, the floor, the table, etc. Bad for their spines, but oh well.
3. Where do you like to stop reading? I rarely get the opportunity to choose where I stop....
At the end of chapters? This would be my preferred choice, most of the time, except in mysteries that end chapters in cliffhangers. If that's the case, I read till whatever-it-is is resolved. See next.
At the end of scenes? Yes, in mysteries and in books that don't have shortish chapters. I look for that tell-tale triple space in the text.
Wherever you are when you doze off? YES. This is the most likely thing. I actually whacked myself in the face with a book Saturday night when my arms relaxed as I dozed off. Then, of course, I was awake for another 10 minutes out of embarrassment and [slight] pain.
Monday Madness
1. I've always been afraid of crowds.
I used to be afraid of the dark, and it still makes me nervous, but I'm not afraid of it anymore.
2. People should not talk on cell phones while asking for help from a 'real' person.
There is not one single thing more annoying than talking to someone at the library, asnwering a question for them, and having them stop me to answer their cell phone.
3. The one thing I look forward to every day is blogging.
Lately, that's about it.
4. My first meal of the day usually consists of a bagel with cream cheese.
Unless we have leftover pie, like we've had this weekend. :-)
5. It seems like housework is a never-ending job.
Unrewarding, too.
6. The last time I painted a room in my house/apartment was June (?) 2004.
Sparky's room.
7. The next time I paint, I'd like to paint my bedroom (room) blue (color).
The plan was to do this over the summer. Then back issues and so forth took over, and now we still have Builder White everywhere, except Sparky's room. sigh

Animal eyes
You have the eyes of a hawk. You're very much aware about your surroundings and the situations that you're in. People can't touch your things because you would immediately notice what's been touched or what's missing. You can analyze people's thoughts and actions quite well. That's good for you. Don't lose that sharp vision of yours.
What Animal Eyes Do You Have?
brought to you by Quizilla
In spite of the fact that I have horrible vision without my glasses on, this seems pretty accurate. I can't find anything patently false.
What religion do you fit in with?
| You fit in with: Humanism Your ideals mostly resemble that of a Humanist. Although you do not have a lot of faith, you are devoted to making this world better, in the short time that you have to live. Humanists do not generally believe in an afterlife, and therefore, are committed to making the world a better place for themselves and future generations. 0% scientific. 40% reason-oriented. | ||||

Someone has hung a sign around your neck, and you have to wear it all day long. What does it say?
"Cranky. Stay away."
How often do you read the last chapter of a book first?
I had a good friend in high school who always did this. I tried it for awhile, but it doesn't work for me. So, I haven't really done it since then.
What is the longest line you've ever stood in? Would you do it again?
I hate lines. It's one of the reasons I don't like Disney, Great America, or any other popular place. It's why I shop for groceries at weird times, and use the self-check lanes whenever possible.
The longest line ever? Probably for Dumbo at Disney (with my 3-year-old) or for the flume ride at Knott's Berry Farm (when I was 16--and I did it again and again cuz the ticket guy was gorgeous).
The most recent long line? I can't think of one.
As the Christmas season approaches, what song is it that you just can't wait to hear?
Number 1, hands down: "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
But I also look forward to the Stevie Nicks version of "Silent Night" and almost any carol sung by Nat King Cole.

Friday Five
Turkey Talk
1. On what day do you celebrate Thanksgiving?
The fourth Thursday of November, except when there is good reason to celebrate a different day.
2. How do you traditionally celebrate this food filled holiday?
In the past 10 years, I've cooked the meal at least 7 times. Otherwise, I spend it doing dishes and watching football and laughing.
3. How do you like your stuffing cooked (in the bird, separately in a dish, store bought, etc.)?
Separately, either baked in a casserole or just in a dish. I don't make my own; I buy a boxed/bagged kind. NOT Stove Top.
4. What is your favorite dessert to eat on Thanksgiving and who makes it?
Non-pumpkin pie. And I usually buy either apple or cherry pies at the bakery, along with a pumpkin pie for my 'boys.' Sometimes I get enough time and energy to bake my own. Not this year, no way!
5. Can you name five things you are thankful for?
My family, both here and scattered around the world.
God.
Good friends.
Good insurance, good medical care, and good jobs to pay for same.
Being able to read, do crosswords, and other relaxing things; both for the ability to do them and for the time to do them. (from my other blog)
Friday
Appetizer
What did you look like when you were a teenager?
Early teens: very long hair, doing the Indian Princess look with two ponytails over my ears
Late teens: short hair, Princess Diana do for awhile, then just shaggy-short
Salad
Whose advice do you listen to?
Beast's. Sometimes my brother's and oldest sister's. Generally speaking, only people I have cause to trust.
Soup
Name a book you would like to memorize.
The Bible.
Main Course
How often are you sick?
Too often. Honestly, though, I get sick--bad sick--probably once a year in the winter, with a couple of icky colds throughout the year as well. I rarely miss work, however, because I'm rarely really sick enough for that.
Dessert
Do you like or dislike change?
Depends what we're changing. Generally, I'd say I'd rather change than not. I bore easily. It's why I like to travel, too; new things to see and do.

Like most girls my age, I babysat from about age 13 until sometime in high school. My first 'real job' was a shelver in the public library.
However, prior to either of those, I was child labor in my parents' household: "cleaning my room" every Saturday (in quotes because it rarely actually got very clean or tidy), vacuuming the steps to the basement monthly, drying and putting away dinner dishes, taking telephone messages for my dad (who worked from home much of the time), cleaning up dog poop before Dad mowed the lawn, and other chores as assigned.
All of which in many ways sounds like the same job I have now....
Thursday Threesome
Onesome: The-- Which is the Christmas movie for you? "It's a Wonderful Life"? "Frosty the Snowman"? "Miracle on 34th Street"? Do you have a favorite you just love to see each year? I actually haven't seen any of the "classic Christmas movies." Beast insists on watching Rudolph and the Grinch (and Frosty...and...) every year. I could care less, although I do enjoy the bits of Rudolph I catch.
One thing I've wondered about for years: why is "The Sound of Music" a Christmas movie? I never watch it, because it's not a Christmas movie, but I love the songs (in the stage version more than the movie).
Twosome: Polar-- bears seem comfortable in the cold and snow; how about you? Is snow a welcome pause for you? ...an annoyance? ...or perhaps something for 'people living elsewhere'?
I like snow. No problem whatsoever, especially if I don't have to drive in it. What I can't stand is bitter cold for days on end without snow.
Threesome: Express-- Have you ever found yourself in the Express line at the store, but only realized that after you had loaded something like thirty items onto the belt, were paying by check and were planning on using coupons?
Yes. However, last week I was at a store with only three lanes open, all three of which were Express Lanes. Several of us with more than 15 items in our cart just froze. It would have been an amusing sociological experiment if the checker hadn't been so bitchy.

Deep thoughts
Idiosyncrasies
Write down five (or more) of your own personal idiosyncrasies. Then, if you wish, tag five people from your blogroll or friendslist to do the same.
- I'm a cataloger who can't seem to keep things tidy and put away. Ask my husband.
- I tend to be compulsive about chewing on both sides of my mouth. It must be even, so I have evenly worn teeth.
- While in elementary school, I used to walk home very carefully not stepping on cracks in the sidewalk, and always making sure to be next to a parked car whenever a car drove past me.
- I love to buy shoes, but other clothes pretty much bore me, as long as they fit comfortably and don't look patently stupid on me.
- First editions? Collectible books? Who cares? I like to read 'em.
- I used to play solitaire in the bathtub.
- I hate having anything under my fingernails. I clean them obsessively.
- I lose my keys, my shoes, my coat, my wallet, my sunglasses...regularly. And usually I don't notice till I'm running out the door.
- Twenty years ago I was always 10 minutes early to everything. Now, I'm frequently late, which drives me nuts.
**********************
Koan
- You're in a room with Jesus, the Buddha, Lao Tze, and the Prophet Muhammed. They ask you if you think they made a positive influence in the world. How do you answer, in five words or less?
- If you could end three - and only three - of the world's biggest problems, what would they be?
- In 1945, the United States became the only country to deploy nuclear weapons in a war, destroying two Japanese cities. The justification for this was that a land invasion would've cost possibly two to three times as many lives on both sides. If you were Harry Truman, would you have made the same decision?
- Given only these two choices, would you (a) choose to have an enormously successful sex life and never again fall in love, or (b) fall in love and never again have sex?
- Which one (and only one) of the following would you choose, if you had to choose a lover tomorrow? (a) a person of strong mind but weak will, (b) a person of weak mind but strong willed, or (c) a person of weak mind and will but who is only physically attractive to you? Why?
- Would you lie to someone if you knew the truth would end your friendship/relationship?
- Kindness. Is this a concept that has value (like money or other tangible things) or does it exist as simply emotion? Why?
What kind of weirdo question is this? There is no reason for having people in one's life if there is no kindness between you. So of course it has value. It's not an emotion; it's a way of behaving. It's also tangible. To me, anyway.

Hump Day (a day late)
health, strength, family, food, life
2. Does your family eat turkey or ham for the Thanksgiving meal? Or do you do both? Or do you do something completely different?
The usual fare: turkey, stuffing, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, rolls...starch and carbs ahoy!
3. What's your favorite Thanksgiving side?
I like the whole meal, but I love the cranberry-gunk-in-a-can.
4. What's your favorite Thanksgiving dessert?
Any non-pumpkin (i.e. fruit) pie.
Bonus Question!
5. Are you going out shopping on Black Friday? If not, what are you gonna do on the day after Thanksgiving?
Are you kidding?! No frickin' way. I'll probably unload some book boxes, work on family memorabilia...oh, never mind. I have to work.

Monday Madness
1. I have little or no patience when it comes to stupid parents of obnoxious children.
2. I wish I could spend more time scrapbooking.
3. The most productive thing I accomplished this past weekend was updating our personal address book for the house (first time in 9 years!).
4. The most enjoyable thing I did this weekend was helping the kids with Christmas Child boxes.
5. I've always wanted to learn how to fly, or parachute.
6. If money wasn't an issue, I'd buy most of Colorado and keep in un-skiiable, and wilderness-y.
7. I blog because I like to talk, and because I like keeping a journal.
All Thanksgiving, all the time

It's gonna be hard to cook in this. And an apron will sorta ruin the lines. {shrug} Oh well, I'm game....
| You Are Mashed Potatoes |
Ordinary, comforting, and more than a little predictable You're the glue that holds everyone together. |
I think I was this last year too...and I don't think I posted it. But two years...guess it's true. But! My mashed potatoes are SO NOT gluey!
| You Are Apple Pie |
You're the perfect combo of comforting and traditional Those who like you crave security |
Of course I am. Huh....
| You Are Pecan Pie Soda |
Tee hee. Finally one that's perfect!!
Nazis
| The Everyday German Achtung! You are 53% brainwashworthy, 22% antitolerant, and 23% blindly patriotic |
| Had you lived in Germany in the 1930s, you'd have probably just gone along with the flow. Men with guns are surrounding the house next door? The bagel place on the corner's gone? Hmm...whatever. The data show you're a decent person who's willing to listen to what people of authority tell you. That's what most people are, and in most times and most places, that's ok. But not then; not there. The sad conclusion: you would've missed your Jewish friends, but you would've done nothing about it. Seriously. But rest assured, you would've forgiven yourself eventually. |
| Link: The Would You Have Been a Nazi Test written by jason_bateman on OkCupid Free Online Dating, home of the 32-Type Dating Test |
I don't trust [human] authority in any shape or form, a gift from my father, who literally couldn't work for other people because he couldn't stand taking orders.
As for forgiving myself...not fucking likely.
Finally, I like Wienerschnitzel. It's lovely, certainly better than a Big Mac. I basically don't trust the author of a test like this who is grateful the Germans lost because of Wienerschnitzel! That's like saying it's a good thing the Brits won so that we'd all be able to have fish and chips forever. Yes, I understand irony, but 6 million dead Jews are nothing to laugh about. And, by the way, bagel shops are newish invention and hardly the epitome of Jewish culture, more like the epitome of 1980s New York culture. [Disclaimer: I love bagels, eat them every morning, so yeah, I'd notice their disappearance immediately] But as for culturally important issues, how about bookshops? What about synagogues? Uhm, for the lame-oes: delis???
Sorry to be such a drip, but this was written to seem intelligent and intellectual, but is so NOT! It's a bad attempt to apply the author's personal values system and bourgeois values to history. Which is always a bad idea.

Feast
When do you feel impatient?
All the time! OK, if I have to pick one specific time, when listening to someone explain something I've already figured out.
Salad
How many times in your life have you had a broken heart?
Whew...unless I've blocked it out, probably only a couple of times. Maybe three?
Soup
Name a book you would like to see made into a movie.
Why would I want to ruin a good book...? But it would be intriguing to see how they'd film the Thursday Next novels.
Main Course
If you could thank one teacher for what they taught you, who would it be and what would you thank them for?
Ms. P (Senior Honors English, high school), for teaching ruthless editing (hee--sorry, inside joke), and for letting us choose our own spelling words.
Dessert
What is your favorite kind of pie?
Yes.
Oh, sorry, favorite kind. Uhm. Cherry. No, apple. No, not so much...lemon. Banana? French silk? Berry...? DAMN! OK, I don't like mince pie, pumpkin pie, or shoo-fly pie. Otherwise, bring it on!
Friday Fiver
1. Favorite brand of jeans: Uhm, still like the Levis, but I usually wear Old Navy or Lee.
2. Magazine you read regularly: Entertainment Weekly
3. If a button came off your clothing, could you sew it back on? Of course. Can't everyone?
4. Have you ever had a curfew? Not written down and legal. My parents kept everything loose so I never knew when I was going to get in trouble. Or something. The only time I've had to deal with "closing time" was in college when the dorms were locked at midnight (or whatever) and woe betide those with no keys. I suspect dorms are locked most of the time now, no?
5. Most dangerous thing you've done: Throwing a grocery sack full of garbage back at the drunks who threw it at me while yelling at them.
Friday Five
1. What do you do for fun?
For calm fun, reading and scrapbooking, crosswords. For noisy fun, sing along to music, deal with my 12-year-old and with the youth group.
2. Is there a person from your past you would like to talk to again, even if it would be a potentially painful conversation?
Well, yeah, my sister. The one I can't call on the phone.
3. What is your favorite comfort food?
All food is comforting. I think the one thing that calms me down while I eat it mindlessly is Wheat Thins. If we're talking a meal, probably mac 'n cheese.
4. What is your preferred form of self-expression? (Do you dance; or express yourself through music, conversation, etc.)
Blog. And talk. Or sing.
5. You just received $5000; what do you spend it on?
In time-honored fashion for all windfalls in the family, $1000 to church, $1000 to savings, $1000 for fun--like maybe a new computer!--and probably the rest goes to Uncle Sam.
Booked by Three
1. How do you store your books?
Stacked -- while reading them, and until I get a huge pile that needs to get put Somewhere
Shelved -- when I get neurotic and actually put things away
2. If you keep them, what order are they in?
Subject or Size -- I try to keep subjects together, and the big books all together too.
Haphazardly -- However, when I'm in a hurry, they just go on the shelves higgeldy-piggeldy.
3. Where are they?
Bedroom
Everywhere /other -- Most are in the 'living areas' but there are some scattered (on the floor, usually) in my bedroom. And a few in the bathrooms. A girl's gotta have something to do while blow-drying her hair! :-)

Getting to Know
Place of employment and title:
W Public Library, Head of Technical Services/General Reference
Birthplace:
Porter Memorial Hospital, Denver, CO
My fondest childhood memory:
Going to the mountains to visit our 'cabin' (actually a converted garage/car repair shop with one bedroom, a galley kitchen and a bathroom that didn't usually work). My parents let me wander around the area alone, or alone with my terrier, for hours at a time without checking up on me. Imagine!
Favorite book:
Killer question. The "Little House" books. "The Hiding Place." "The Book of Ruth." The Narnia books. Lots of mysteries over the years....
Favorite hobby:
Reading. Followed distantly by crossword puzzles.
Favorite movie:
Anything with a good plot that doesn't take itself too seriously. I've especially liked "Heathers," "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," "Young Frankenstein" and (surprisingly, to me) the Matrix movies.
The craziest thing I've ever done:
The scariest thing was getting in a car in Puerta Vallarta, at age 16, with three friends and two local guys. I didn't have my glasses, we were all in swimsuits, and no idea where we were going. They thought we were party girls; we were just stupid. They drove us back to our hotel after about 30 minutes of quiet insistence on our part.
Pet peeve:
People who think they are the center of the universe
First job:
For a paycheck: shelving books at the Englewood Public Library
For free: I worked for free for my dad whenever he needed an extra pair of hands (welding, holding tools, stuffing envelopes...)
What I'd like to be doing in 10 years:
Cataloging. Working full-time and accruing some pension money! Traveling (Sparky will be out of college--we hope!--by then)
For one day, I'd like to trade places with:
Laura Bush. And I'd better get some warning, cuz I'll be packing some very pointy-toed boots.
I've always wanted to travel to:
only freakin' everywhere! Uhm...Australia
To relieve stress, I:
do crosswords, cry, watch totally mindless TV
Three words that describe me:
worrier, Pollyanna-ish, overbooked
The person I most admire:
my dad
My friends like me because:
I listen, I laugh, I cry, I feed them.
Behind my back they say:
[don't I wonder!]
probably that I need to get organized, take a chill-pill, and stop speaking before I think
I'd give anything to meet:
Jimmy & Rosalyn Carter
My most embarrassing moment:
this should be limited by time or something--I have them every day....so, speaking generally, I'll say it's something like talking about someone only to turn around and find them standing behind me
I love the town I live in because:
I actually don't. See, this is the reason I'd never be able to do this interview for our local paper. Generally speaking, I think W is ingrown, putzy, retarded, and unfriendly. The nice people are the newest ones in town, the ones who don't know any better. That's the town in which I work. The town in which I live is almost worse: Redneck Central, and only the bad parts of Rednecks. We have nice neighbors--which is more than we could say for most of the time we lived in W!--and I love my house and yard. I love the view, and I love my job (in W). I do not want to live here until I die, though.
Maybe I should have mentioned somewhere above that I'm an opinionated crank...?
ANYWAY: consider yourself tagged if you've read this far.

Thursday Threesome
Onesome: Of the Hours-in the week, which ones are your favorites?
I like early mornings, around an hour before the sun comes up. I also like the time around 10:00 p.m. No one really 'needs' you at those hours, and there's not really much you can do, so they are good times to relax and appreciate life. Or sleep, if that helps in the appreciation business!
Twosome: In the-week there are 168 hours (it seems longer!); what bit of trivia do you hold that you'd like to share with the group?
In Russian, the root words for "red" and "beauty" are the same: red = красная ; beauty = красотка
Threesome: Week-after week we roll along, pausing each Thursday to share some common time here; where else do you go on a weekly basis for a little diversion? (On line or off line; either is fine.)
Check my sidebar, or just scroll back through my entries. My quickie-fave is Blogthings.I can't believe it's Thursday night already!

Hump Day
Today's theme is Neon Sign Day! Let's start the hump.
1. What does your personal neon sign say to the world?
Today, lately, it's something along the lines of "Fuck with me at your own peril."
2. Ever seen a neon sign with certain letters burned out so that it said something unintended?
For the last year, the bowling alley I drive past every day has had part of the sign burned out. During the day, I obviously can't tell, but at night it just says "BOW." I always say, "Wow" and my son groans and flails at me. When they fix it, I might be sad. But I'm more likely to be relieved, as will Sparky!
That's all I can think of for that theme. The theme for Thursday is Headache Day, so:
3. What gives you a headache? Could be a scent, a sound, someone's actions - anything.
I have allergies, so exposure to my triggers starts with a headache: corn pollen, cats, dogs, dust, mold... Also, extreme cold and lack of caffeine. And crying, if indulged in for too long at once.
Mostly, people don't give me a headache. A stomachache, and pains elsewhere, but no headache.
4. What song, artist or album in your music collection would you pull out and play if you wanted to give your roommate/neighbors a huge, head-splitting headache?
Hmmm, what would I choose to give The Beast a headache....? The Bee Gees, perhaps, or Andy Gibb. Maybe show tunes....
My neighbors, I wouldn't even try to compete: they have everything annoying on their side, from late night band practice, to fireworks (i.e. gas bombs) to loud drunks. I compete by stuffing earplugs in, or going out of town.
Blogging

Italics are what I generally agree with. Some of the rest is just dead wrong, although I do enjoy hanging upside down in trees...or I did about mm--mmm years ago.

Sell out!
| On Average, You Would Sell Out For |
I don't get it. I promised not to put LSD in the Thanksgiving turkey, and this is the thanks I get! Hmph.
Trust me, my sell-out point is much higher than this.

Scones. Breads. Tikka. Thanksgiving dinner (let me know if you're coming--we have room).
[Z is for zodiac sign:]
Scorpio. And this week I feel I've lived up to it...down to it, rather.
Goddess
| Minerva Indeed, you are 66% erudite, 41% sensual, 45% martial, and 20% saturnine. |
| Another virgin Goddess (Diana or Artemis being the other), Minerva was, just like her Greek counterpart Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom and Freedom as well as an all powerful Goddess of War, which made her a most formidable opponent indeed. Among the many disciplines that fell under her control were: writing, the sciences, architecture, embroidery, and just about anything else dealing with artistic skills, wise counsel, and of course battle and warfare. Like Athena, owls were considered sacred to Minerva, representing wisdom. She was a very wise warrior, respected by the Roman legions. She was also, no kidding, the Goddess of Women's Rights and patroness of career women. The Fifteen Goddesses These are the 15 categories of this test. If you score above average in … …all or none of the four variables: Neit. … Erudite: Minerva. … Sensual: Aphrodite. … Martial: Artemis. … Saturnine: Persephone. … Erudite & Sensual: Isis. … Erudite & Martial: Sekhmet. … Erudite & Saturnine: Nemesis. … Sensual & Martial: Hera. … Sensual & Saturnine: Bast. … Martial & Saturnine: Ilamatecuhtli. … Erudite, Sensual & Martial: Maeve. … Erudite, Sensual & Saturnine: Freya. … Erudite, Martial & Saturnine: Sedna. … Sensual, Martial & Saturnine: Macha. |
