Monday Madness
This week's questions:
1. Name 1 comedy movie you've seen.
Since this is my favorite genre, it's difficult to pick one. So I'll pick Heathers, because it's completely funny, if you're sick minded enough, and because it wasn't on the Official List of best comedies the AFI put out.
2. Name 2 black and white films you remember seeing.
I'm not a fan of b/w films. So, Psycho, and The Battleship Potemkin are about all I've seen--and liked--beside Charlie Chaplin and the Marx Brothers.
3. Name 3 dramas you thought were worth watching.
Dr. Zhivago, Platoon, Schindler's List
4. Name 4 television shows you watch on a regular (or semi-regular) basis.
Survivor (the link is for the first one, but I've enjoyed them all, except Africa because we missed most of it), The Amazing Race (this link is for the original, but we missed that one and caught all of the rest), CSI (the original one only)...that's about it. The other stuff that's on is chosen by other people in the house.
5. Name 5 things that, in your opinion, are advertised on television too frequently.
Cars. Beer. Cars. Insurance. Wait, did I mention cars?

This week's words are: Mischievously Axed Blaspheme Synergistic Gourmet
The princess mischievously kicked off her shoes as she walked toward the window and away from her angry tutor. She looked out at the gardener as he axed her mother's favorite tree down to a stump. It was dead, but she knew there would be trouble. Oh, well. She was used to hearing her mother blaspheme and curse the servants. Occasionally, it turned into a synergistic event when the two women took turns berating an underling. Like last Thursday, when their chef sent the remains of their latest gourmet banquet to the Little Sisters to give to the poor instead of properly throwing everything away.
OK. I'm writing about princesses. It's time to go to sleep.

More personality
Know Thyself...Really now. That's...fascinating.
Knowing your emotional weaknesses allows you to alter your lifestyle to improve your social interactions, time spent with family, problems in your relationships, communication between friends, workplace attitude and efficiency, emotional stability, and many other daily situations in which your emotional aptitude is utilized and challenged.
Your Weakest Emotional Category is: Openness
Recognizing your emotional strengths is equally important. For example, strong assertiveness can be positive, assuming you are not domineering in conversations and relationships. Strong empathy can be beneficial, as long as you don't put the interests of others before your own well-being. Moderation is the key to successfully handling your emotions.
Your Strongest Emotional Category is: Self-Reliance
Personality Plus
Cat., your Personality Summary
Key Areas of your Personality
Key Areas of your Personality
Your personality stands out from the average person's particularly in the areas of:
Your High Curiosity LevelA Subset of your Personality Measurement: [percentages scored--the chart won't copy]
Social Need [approx 30%]Your Interaction Style:
Openness [approx 45%]
Approval Need [approx 40%]
Ability to Focus [approx 70%]
Emotionality [approx 75%]
Reliance on Intuition [approx 40%]
Tolerance for Change [approx 20%]
You scored 30 in the area of extroversion /introversion, which means that your energy is directed primarily inward, rather than outward. Your mixed score in this trait creates an interesting and alluring combination of traits: You are social yet also very reflective and introspective. You like to be around people, but too much interaction drains your energy. You need to retreat every once in a while in order to recharge your batteries. Keep these needs in mind when choosing the ideal work situation for you, otherwise you won't feel happy.
Life Satisfaction:
Although you score higher than the average person, you are still not entirely satisfied with your current life situation.
And then they want you to spend money to get the rest.
Hidden Talent (2)
I took this once before. Turns out I have two hidden talents!
Who'd've thought?
[Yes, sensitive: I cry all-the-damn-time. I generally pick up on situations around me, unless I'm having a clueless day. Which do happen regularly, so I wouldn't say I do it easily. Facts? Who needs those? I do intuit a lot. Usually correctly. When I'm paying attention. The right path is almost NEVER clear to me. I laugh and laugh at the thought.]

What Is Your Outlook On Life?

Yup.
Yupyupyup.
Sometimes.
Killer...?
Yes, you don't like to kill people. That goes against everything you belive in. It's not that you are a coward, but your ideals and morals wouldn't allow it.
You are the typical hero, do the righteous things, get the bad guys and do it all legally. But just because you don't kill doesn't mean you can't kick ass. And that is what you do. You use your brain and your strenght to do honourable deeds and protect people you know and love. If an evil guy is going to take over the world soon, it's you who will get involved.
You hate watching innocents suffer, and love seeing bad people getting what they deserve. You are probably also happy and optimistic and work pretty good in groups. And the friends you usually make are true ones.

Curiouser
A new one, via Shelly:
Instructions: Give your opinion on each of the 5 subjects below. Descriptive links are provided if you want to know more about the subject. What do you think about...
the board game Trivial Pursuit - I love TP. No one will play it with me anymore, except Sparky, and I have to spot him a couple of wedges to start. Maybe we'll get a new question set this Christmas....
the state of Kentucky -- I don't really have opinions about states, but hey! I just found out , by clicking the link, that Kentucky is a Commonwealth, like PA. I've never been there, but it's on my list. If I ever get around to visiting my niece in Tennessee, we could take a quick trip there perhaps.
the astrological sign and constellation Pisces -- Something else I tend not to thing a lot about is astrology. I can create charts for people, just for fun, because it's so terrifically scientific, and yet so terrifically goofy. There are no Pisces in my family. I can't find constellations, beyond Orion's Belt and (if I'm lucky) the Big Dipper.
Winnie the Pooh, the fictional bear -- Or, as we call him, Pinnie the Woo. No idea why. I love the 'real' Pooh, but Disney has come very close to destroying him. The only part of the Disney version of the Hundred-Acre Wood I like his Tigger. In the original, Rabbit was my favorite (any surprise there?) and I simply LOVE Eeyore and Roo.
Castles -- Wow. That's a huge subject. Uhm, well, castles. Hmm. Cold, dank, smelly, smoky, muddy. That's during their functional years. I've been to a few, mostly in England. I always check out the bathroom facilities and then raise a cheer for modern plumbing. While in Germany 5 years ago, Sparky and I went on a castle tour at Burg Eltz which was interesting only because the tour guide spoke only German--we don't speak much German beyond "danke" and "bitte." I surprised myself in being able to explain quietly much of what we were seeing to Sparky. My favorite castles are Burg Eltz (cute and very German, and still used as a family residence), Edinburgh (great views, perfect defensive design) and Durham (which is university dormitories now).

The Saturday 8
I'm taking my husband out of the equation, because otherwise it would be all about him. He is my best friend, and I could use him in nearly every answer (except 1-3).
1. who was your very first friend?
Who knows? I can only remember back to age 4 or so. There were a couple of boys on my block named Chris and Tony. Chris was my age, Tony was older (like 2 years, maybe). I proposed to Chris, by note. We were going to live in the lilac bushes when we got married.
2. who is your oldest friend now?
My oldest friend: I have a couple of quite elderly friends....retirement aged. Florence is 105. I guess she wins by default.
My friend the longest: Laura. We met when we were in Kindergarten or first grade.
3. do you make and keep friends easily?
Making friends as an adult is difficult; there's less time to sit around getting to know people. I think I make "acquaintances" easily. Sometimes those grow into friendships, but usually they don't.
4. tell us about your best friend.
My best friend is Jenny. We met in college, on the first day of band, when I asked her if "this is where the flutes are supposed to be" and then flopped down next to her. She is the most amazingly kind-hearted person I've ever met. She has, in fact, ruined it for the rest of the world. She's a softie (though she's far from wimpy!) and I love her to death.
5. tell us about the friend who gets on your nerves the most (and why). C.T., with whom I work. She is the epitome of Negativity. There's not a day that goes by that she doesn't make a blatantly unhelpful and depressing comment.
6. tell us about the last time you let a friend down.
Let me count the ways this week....no, it's too depressing. Everyflippinday.
7. tell us about the last wonderful thing a friend did for you!
Sent me a mix CD. Just cuz.
8. what was the last 'friend' thing you did? (see a movie, go out to dinner, go shopping, go to a game, bury a body together, etc.)
Went for a walk around the neighborhood. Sadly, none of my best friends are very close by, so we mostly have phone conversations. Or email/blog conversations.

5. Name one thing that you've never before written about in your LJ/blog.
I don't think I've ever talked about playing Frisbee across my street with a neighbor kid.

Friday Fiver
1. Have you ever been to the emergency room?
Yup. Too many times, both as patient, caregiver, friend, and (temporarily) as employee.
2. What's the worst pain you've ever had?
"You men don't suffer the way we suffer when we have labor pains." Hands-down. No comparison.
3. If you could choose your doctor, do you prefer someone of the same or opposite sex?
Don't care, although I will say the female doctors I've had have, overall, outshone the males with just a couple of exceptions.
4. Do you take vitamins?
Yup. Cuz I eat for shit.
5. Would you prefer to go to the doctor, the dentist or go sky diving?
Sky-diving. Though I don't mind the regular doctor. Don't like the dentist or the eye doctor--I'd rather go hungry for a week!
1. How long have you had your LiveJournal/blog?
Almost two years (started the first one in January '04).
2. What do you consider to be the main purpose of your LiveJournal/blog?
Which one? This one is memes. I have others for work, for "life," for books, for trying to not kill myself....
3. If you could change something about your personal blogging style, what would it be?
Less verbosity.
4. What are your criteria for adding someone to your friends list/blog roll?

Appetizer
Name 3 qualities that are important to you in friendship.
Trust
Fun
Reciprocity
Soup
If you could dream about anything tonight, what would the subject matter be?
Hmmmm, I have so many fun, weird dreams that I don't really want to try planning them. I don't want to dream about the book I'm reading!
Salad
Do you usually make an effort to personally thank people who do favors for you?
I hope so! Sometimes I forget, but I try.
Main Course
If you had to go out of town for an extended period of time, who would you trust to take care of your home and belongings?
'K, I'm assuming I can't choose my husband...? I guess I'd say Trudie or Lisa/Greg or Cindy/Ken.
Dessert
How do you react to practical jokes when they're played on you?
My brother used to tease me unmercifully. Consequently, I don't like mean practical jokes. I've enjoyed the surprise parties people have done for me, and I generally can laugh at myself if it's done with good intent. It depends on where I am mentally, too.

Quince (15)
found on the Chocolicious Meme Queen 's site:
1. Pairs of shoes you own:
I estimate about 35 pairs. There are about 30 upstairs in my closet (well, if I put them away, there would be!), and then some scattered around the house by outside doors.
2. TV show you hate:
Anything involving Paris Hilton, anything on the FOX channel, stupid sit-coms.
3. Harry Potter 7 or food for a day?
Haha, I've already read it! But if the question is food or books, for one day, I'd probably give up food before books.
4. Comic strip you could live in?
"Zits" combined with "Boondocks" and "Calvin & Hobbes." Welcome to my life. I'd like to live in classic "Bloom County."
5. Scooby doo or Shaggy?
Scooby, because I don't really know what Shaggy's about. But really I want to be Angelica.
6. Finish this sentence, "Getting lost..."
"...sounds nice right now."
7. Favorite veggie:
When I can get it, jicama. Corn, broccoli, asparagus, peas, beans, lettuce, (raw) spinach, celery, carrots....all the usual.
8. Lost friend you would like to find:
The last time I did this, I was discovered via Google, which was embarrassing, but kind of cool, too. I've actually kept track of most of my good friends...sigh. One of the problems with being [sort of] anonymous is that I can't write anyone's name down from the library field. And I can't remember a lot of last names of people I used to know. Uhm, Kim Skjoldager. We used to be on a Prodigy BBS together about 13 years ago.
9. DJs or Music?
Music, because I don't go to clubs or listen to radio (gaahk).
10. Something good you did this week:
For me: Bible Study
For others: I want to say "Didn't kill them for existing" but I'll tone that down to "Provided passable reference service on a day when I wanted to chew ten-penny nails."
11. TV reality show you would like to host:
I kind of always liked "The Mole." But I'd co-host "The Amazing Race" with Phil any time. Just call and say the word.
12. Red or Blue?
Blue.
13. Opening lines to your speech at your high school class reunion:
Thank God we didn't have to do this!
"Hi, I was in band, wore glasses, and otherwise invisible. A lot of you folks were pretty nasty in high school. I've noticed that some of you haven't changed. That's ok. I didn't really expect you do, and I sure didn't come here to talk to you anyway." [can you tell I was at my 20-year reunion a couple of years ago?]
14. New York or Los Angeles?
Neither. If I had to pick one, I'd pick LA for the weather and NYC for the general sense of being part of the world.
15. When you wish upon a star, what do you wish for?
I don't. None of them ever came true. I think I used to wish for peace and/or for the Boy of the Moment to notice me.

House of confusion

You are a very capable person and when there is trouble people turn to you because you're able to stay calm and collected. You like balance in your life and you try not to make many waves. Still, if there is something that you believe strongly in, you will commit yourself totally to that cause.
Your weakness is that sometimes you can be indecisive and perfectionist, especially about little details and you drive people crazy sometimes with these traits. With the innocence of a Hufflepuff and the calm of a Ravenclaw you will be loved in life!

...Madness
(keep in mind that I'm at home answering these questions)
1. What's on your computer desk?
(keep in mind that I'm at home answering these questions)
1. What's on your computer desk?
No, the real question is "what isn't on it?" A lamp, a printer, a wireless modem, several of pop bottle tops, lots and lots of CD cases, two checkbooks, a phone, a high-voltage insulator (?), our church directory, a Kleenex box, a basket of "stuff", paperspaperseverywhere, pens, pencils, a debit card that doesn't work...2. What does your computer desktop background look like?
3. What's on your agenda for the upcoming week?Just the top bit, not the pedestal. It's Isaac Newton outside the British Library.
Must get fundraiser stuff sorted out.
Must plan meals and grocery shop.
Must cook dinner for friends who just had a baby (they have 3-year-old triplets as well).
Must do readings for Bible Studies.
Should get allergy shot.
Should try not to get any sicker.
Should update book blog.
Should empty carts at work, the ones that are literally surrounding my desk.
Should figure out Tech Svc. plan...but that one I know I won't do.

Tarot
Also from Shelly:

You are the Hermit card. The Hermit has chosen a solitary spiritual path. He shines light on his inner self and, by this means, gains wisdom. The Hermit's home is the natural world and it is by being in tune with that world that he learns the laws of nature and learn how they operate within himself. His path is a lonely one as he lives in silence and has for companionship only his own internal rhythms. But those crossing his path are touched by his light and wisdom. Though often alone, he manages nevertheless to instruct those who meet him and guides those who chose to follow him on a path towards enlightenment.

Saturday--oh boy.
Time for the 8:
1. are you good at drawing or painting?
I'm now going to artistically clean the kitchen and put sh*t away that's been laying around far too long. If I'm lucky, I'll have time to work on the family memorabilia.
1. are you good at drawing or painting?
I've never really tried painting. I can draw good lines, but suck at representational figures. See below, #7.2. have you ever, or do you currently, write poetry?
I have. I like structured poetry, but it's very time-consuming and I don't have time. I don't make time. So, no, not a current thing for me.3. have you ever, or do you currently, write short stories?
I have in the past. I haven't written anything coherent in a long time. Someday maybe I will again.4. what musical instrument(s) do you - or did you - play?
I took piano lessons for 3 or 4 years when I was a kid. I played flute from 6th grade through sophomore year of college. Haven't really done much with either since then.5. creativity is apparent in many ways ... decorating, drawing/painting, voice, sculpture, screen/playwriting, etc. do you consider yourself a creative person? why or why not?
I have flashes of creativity, but overall, no. I like rules too much, and creativity tends to not follow rules very well. You can't sit down and say, "OK, now I'm going to write 5 poems" the way you can say, "OK, now I'm going to sit down and pay 10 bills."6. if you could be bestowed one creative and talented gift, what would it be, and why?
I'd like to be able to dance. Or force myself to sit and write SOMEthing every day. Something beyond blogstuff, that is!7. my uncle, grandmother, and daughter are artists and can paint/draw fabulously. i'm the opposite - my stick figures are uneven! who received the artisitic talent in your family?
My dad was an architect. That's where I got the line-drawing skills, which I've never really developed.8. i have a few artist friends who are quite happy with their ramen soup noodles, low credit scores, and crappy apartments while they wait for their "big break." do you think it is more important to follow your dream and live meagerly, OR do you think it is more important to live comfortably and plan for your future while you follow your dream on the side?
I can sing, and read music and enjoy it. Don't like performing in public, however.
I can construct coherent thoughts with words, but I'm lazy.
I scrapbook, which is supposed to be artistic, but mostly I'm just slapping the pictures in of late.
The most Artistic people in my family are my niece-the-librarian, who performs in lots of stage plays and choirs and sings as much as she can. My "English" nieces are good too; they've actually had art classes!
I'm far too practical to live for the dream in this case. I don't like the thought of going hungry, or being poor (having been marginally poor for awhile as a child, I see no romance in it). So middle class.
I'm now going to artistically clean the kitchen and put sh*t away that's been laying around far too long. If I'm lucky, I'll have time to work on the family memorabilia.
Late
Friday Five
1. What kind of computer do you have? (Mac, iBook, Dell, etc.)
The one I'm using right now (at home) is an HP.
2. How old is it? Are you happy with it?
It's about 5 years old, maybe more. Yes, relatively happy. I'd like a better monitor, but this setup has served us well and continues to do so. Most of the time! %$)@ing viruses excepted.
3. How many computers are in your household?
Four: two PCs, two laptops.
4. What are your favorite games/timewasters on your computer?
Right now, Sudoku and some of the Yahoo games. If I have a long period of down time, I like Civilization III and The Sims. Haven't played those in a year or so, though.
5. If money were no object, what kind of computer would you like to have?
One that did dishes, solved problems, filled the car with gas, went grocery shopping and cooked, forced me to do the work I should be doing.... There isn't one? Bummer.
Friday Fiver
1. What is the most important thing you've ever lost?
My mind (see #3 below). Really? My naivete and positive outlook.
2. When is the last time you lost your keys?
Not for awhile. Having said that, I probably won't be able to find them later today!
3. Have you ever felt like you've lost your mind?
Uh, daily.
4. Are you likely to ask for directions when lost or to continue to wander?
I'm a girl. Whaddaya think?
5. Numerology: reliable or just a load of bunk?
Fun timewaster, but ultimately bunk.
Friday Four
Q1: If you were given the opportunity to use a syringe full of sodium pentothal (truth serum) on any two or three people in the world (they can be either dead or alive, by the way), who would you choose to use it on and what questions do you think you might ask?

Q1: If you were given the opportunity to use a syringe full of sodium pentothal (truth serum) on any two or three people in the world (they can be either dead or alive, by the way), who would you choose to use it on and what questions do you think you might ask?
My former boss, Psycho-B*tch from Hell. What the heck were you thinking?! Did you realize you were stealing from the library? Did you care? Why were you so mean to everyone?Q2: Do you have a favorite childhood memory (by childhood, think ages 3 to 18-years-old)? If you don't or would rather not share it, what was your favorite part of yesterday?
Joseph Smith. C'mon, where did you really get those rules? How high were you? Did you ever really think maybe you ought to stop the charade?
Cheney. Because I just want to know where he goes when he disappears from public view.
I actually have a lot of good childhood memories. One that's been on my mind a lot lately (not sure why) is during the 1976 Olympics, after watching the track and field events, I went out into our back yard and ran--just ran--up and down the sidewalk to the alley for about 45 minutes non-stop. I was going to be the next American track athlete. It felt so good. And it's probably the last time anything involving running actually felt good.Q3: If an impending natural disaster was forecasted for your town or geographical region, how confident would you be in your own ability to evacuate to a safe location? Along the same lines, how confident are you in your own city or town's evacuation plan and capabilities?
Once we got out of the subdivision (which has all of 2 entrances for over 160 homes), we'd be fine. We live in the boonies, though, and any natural disasters would come with very little warning. No hurricanes here...just tornadoes and the faint possibility of a smallish earthquake. Our house is on a good-sized hill so flooding is not likely, either. I'd be willing to bet our town (the one we live in) doesn't have an evacuation plan. The ones we work in may. Don't know.Q4: When was the last time you spent en entire morning or afternoon (4 hours or more) exclusively out-of-doors, and what was it that you did during that period of time?
Man made disasters? I grew up 100 miles north of Target Two (after the President). I understood as a teenager that we would be dead if nuclear war began, which seemed like a good prospect, given the thought of surviving.
I think this summer we were outside all day a couple of times. At my niece's post-wedding bash (i.e. gift-opening) we sat outside all freakin' afternoon cooking in the sun.
